And we've talked to basketball.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
We've heard for Brodney Terran long hornon Den's basketball coach,
baseball as well other football conversation. Greg Tepper, managing enter
Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, was on with us to
talk college and high school football and coming up in
a few minutes more postseason baseball conversation. Our MLB insider
Gen Watson will join us. Coming up in a few

(00:33):
moments right now, just to update the games for you.
It's in the bottom of the eighth inning in Houston.
The Detroit Tigers lead the Astros three to nothing. Tigers
scored all three of the runs in the second. In fact,
they had three consecutive two out hits on Fromer Valdez
who gave up all three of those runs. Meanwhile, Terrek
skuball tremendous six shutout inning, scattering four hits and Will

(00:58):
Vest in his second inning relief. Now for the Tigers
working against the Astros who bat with one out in
the bottom half of the eighth inning, So we'll keep
you posted on that. Orioles and Royals scoreless that contest
in Baltimore, and they're going to the fifth inning now
at Oriel Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore and Kansas City

(01:19):
in game one of their series, Mets and Brewers at
the bottom of the hour in game one of their
nationally Wildcard series, and it will be at seven thirty
tonight is the Padres and Braves in game one of that,
so they gets called up in the baseball and we'll
have some analysis of it. Of it all coming from
Gene Watson coming up here in just a few moments.

(01:40):
And we wanted to hear a little more from Long
Wren's head coach Steve Sarkis, and he had his news
conference yesterday, and for sark it was the only media
availability this week, this being the open date on the schedule,
so this would be the only opportunity for us to

(02:05):
be able to hear from sark coming up and sark
talking about a variety of things, and among those the
play that a lot of folks saw that Arch Banning
pulled off in the third quarter laid in the third quarter.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Of the ballgame with Mississippi State.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
It was twenty one to six at that point, and
we'd already seen Arch banning for a one touchdown pass,
that beautiful throw down the boundary right before the end
of the first half when he hit DeAndre Moor and
stride there.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Right at about the two yard line.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
He went in for the score and that gave the
long words of fourteen to six halftime lead. Then in
the third quarter, it remember it was Manning who scored
to make a twenty one to six And then there
was the drive there where he early in the fourth
quarter found more Again, this required a little more work

(03:17):
on Archer's part other than taking a shot to the face,
which is what happened on the forty nine yard touchdown pass.
This one was a deal where he had enough time
to look over the defense. And I remember we visited
with DeAndre Moore on the postgame show and I asked
him about it, and he said, I just had to

(03:37):
find a path, and he found a way to get
through it and split two defenders deep in the end
zone to be able to pull it in. So the
question then went to Arch Manning about what he saw,
and he explained what he saw. And then yesterday in
the news conference, Longwarren's head coach, Steve Sarkishan was asked
for his thoughts on Manning's progression as a quarterback and

(04:02):
what he's done as a quarterback to progress to be
able to be able to read the defense enough to
see that play develop and then to be able to
execute it.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
No, it was definitely.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
First of all, I'll say this, You know, you call
a certain play with a premier coverage of mind, and
that clearly was not. I did not think they were
gonna zero blitz us on third and anybody remember the
down and distance on that play third and there's third
and long. It was third and Long were right about
the fifty yard line there near the end of the
first half, and we actually were anticipating coverage and so

(04:39):
we were trying to get three verticals. Matt Golden was
actually running down the middle of the field and they
actually zero blitzed us. And the beauty of that was
that when I say zero blitz, there's no safeties and
they're bringing one more than we have to block. And
the beauty of it was one that the offensive line
picked up the five that they could. The second part

(05:01):
of it was that Arch knew who the free rush
was going to be. And the third part of it
was he knew where his man answers were to go
take a shot. At that point, it was we call
it dealer's choice. He could have went to ib, he
could have went to DeAndre. It wasn't designed for one
of those. The best matchup he went with Dre to
the field and it was a heck of a throw
and heck of a catch.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yeah, that was hit pretty much in essence on that,
You've heard Sark talk about this, and he mentioned with
us on the post came about the season being in segments,
and he looked at these first five ball games as
one segment before the bye week, the open date, then
a free game period with Oklahoma, Georgia, and Vanderbilt, then

(05:44):
there's another bye week.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
And then concluding this.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
So he went into a little more detail about how
they approach it as a staff and a team, the
way this season is segmented.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
No, just phase two.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
I save all my creativeness for the play calls, so
just two. You know the difference is is that that
first phase, when you think of training camp and then
a five game slate like that was probably.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
A longer block.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
This is really a four week block with the bye
week and then a three game schedule, and so we're
really attacking it as such, you know, of what are
we doing this week to put ourselves in the best
position for these next three weeks of the season, and
then we'll worry about the next block after that. And
so I think when you can break it down like
that for the players, it's not so intimidating when you

(06:33):
look at when you look at the whole duration of
a season from August all the way until end of January.
And so we try to break it down the smaller
segments to keep their attention and focus on the task
at hand.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
What's what, you know, what's going on right in front
of them. All Right, we'll have some more from Sark
a little later on this hour.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Up next, we're talking about these baseball playoffs with our
MLB insider Gene wats coming up next when we continue
on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the
iHeartRadio app.
