Speaker 1 (00:00):
Oh, we have one more hour of the program, the
updating the baseball for you.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Right now, Houston and Detroit tied at two.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Tiger's batting with the bases loaded and two outs on
the top of the eighth inning. Most of the scoring
has happened late in this contest. In fact, a basis
loaded walk?
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Is that what?
Speaker 1 (00:21):
It was? A basis loaded walk issued by Josh Is
that well? I said, no, I guess it was just
time called out of that. So the base is still
loaded with two outs. Yeah, it was a basis loaded walk,
and the Tigers have taken the lead again.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
It's three to two.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Josh Hater just issued a basis loaded walk with two
outs in the eight Spencer Torklesen drew the walk and
has just gone on the first base in Detroit has
now gone back in front of Houston.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
It is three to two.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Is the Tiger's bat in the top of the eighth
inning with two outs, and that against Josh Hater, the closer.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
So that's what's happened in this game. I say it
was a basis loaded walk. Torklesen went down the first back.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Had just loaded the bases there and the graphic headed
walks to the bases are still too two. Sorry and
mena Panicastros fans there watching on a very very small
monitor and it didn't have the out indicator listed on there.
They do now. It's still just two two. It's not
a three to two boggame. It's two two. The bases
are loaded now though, as Josh Hater issued a two outwalk,
(01:22):
so Tiger still batting two to two. Top of the eighth,
two outs. Kansas City continues to leave Baltimore. It's one
to nothing as the Royals lead the Ools. That's in
the top of the second inning and that contest at
the Oriel Park at Camden Yards, So we'll keep you
updated on those Loalgworts head coach Steve Sarkisian took part
in the SEC teleconference today and one of the questions
(01:48):
that he was asked was about the thing about learning
to play with emotion but not play emotion is It's
something we've heard sark mentioned quite a bit in the past.
He says, we want our guys to play with emotion,
but we don't want them to play emotionally, and he
explained how he came into that mindset, Like with so
(02:09):
many other things, all roads lead back to Nick Saban.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
I had a hard time putting it into words. O
Saban more eloquently used this term that I'm referencing that
I kind of took with me because it really resonated
with me. I didn't know how to say it, but
I knew what he was meaning. And then once he
said it the way that he said it, like I said,
it resonated with me. And I've kind of carried it
with me ever since.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Okay, all right, that was That was one thing, and
then one other question he was asked. And there is
a lot of experience in this, and it's all about
the backup quarterback. When Sartan played at BYU, really, even
when he played at El Comuno Community College in California,
he had been a backup quarterback and then and then
(02:55):
had a great sophomore season. Then he went to BYU
and rolled in initially as a backup and then became
the starter and had a great finish to his collegiate
career at BYU. Since he has been the head coach
at Texas, he has had to turn to the backup
quarterback on several occasions.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
That has happened as well. So because of that, it has.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Been a situation where he's you know, you think about
it when he had had some card on back and
Casey Thompson was there and all of that sort of thing.
And of course since Quinn yours has been the starter,
he's had to turn to the backup quarterback, but that
was due to injury Malik Murphy having to come on
for Quinn the last couple of seasons and then of
(03:43):
course earlier the season Arch Manning having to step in
when Quinn was injured. So he was asked about that
and about getting the backup quarterback's reps so that they
can be well prepared for the eventuality if he has
to go to a backup quarterback.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
And when I was a starter, I never wanted to
backup to coming to the game, even for a play.
And I remember my senior year of college, I have
been banged up and the coaches wanted to run a
quarterback draw.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Honey, you're not.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
They called the play, and they called the play and
I scored a touchdown. So you know, I've got respect
for a guy who's the starting quarterback and the rhythm.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
That it's needed to play with.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
So no, that's not something I've ever entertained.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Okay, so there it is, and some thoughts there from
Loren's head coach Steve Sarkishan.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
In Houston, it has been broken open, at least for
the moment. A big two out bases clearing double. My
pinch hitter Andy Abanyez has cleared off the bases and
the Tigers have taking a five to two lead on
(05:01):
the Astros. Astros just recorded the final out of the inning,
but at Bonyez with a basis clearing double to score
three runs, and the Astros are down the six outs
left in their season right now, going to the bottom
of the eight. Tigers up five to two, having one
game one yesterday.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Three to one. We'll keep you updated on that, all right.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Coming up next, we'll visit with the play by play
voice of the Houston Texans, Mark Vandermir, to talk about
the Texans and their battles in the AFC South. That's
next when we continue here on this Wednesday afternoon on
Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio.
My good friend Mark Vandermir, the play by play voice
of the Houston Texans, is probably a little more advanced
and just dealing with yacht rock like I'm a hopeless
(05:41):
yacht rocker there. But Mark joins us on the hotline,
how you doing today?
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Mark?
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Are you kidding? I'm all over Ambrosia.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Let's go.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
I feel like driving up to see the show myself, Ambrosia.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Are you kidding?
Speaker 5 (05:53):
I love yacht rock. I remember the videos. It was
a series on YouTube. Did you ever see these?
Speaker 4 (06:00):
No, you could still search them.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
They didn't have the rights to the music, so maybe
they got sued, you know, these days, it's a little tough,
as you know, Craig.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
But I love the hot rocks.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Well, my wife and I are hopeless yacht rockers, and
like I said, we've we've been to see Little River
Band and several other ones like that, so we're we're
all about it there. So it's it's good. It's good
to know that I've got some company in that category. Hey, listen, uh,
the City of Houston, even if they lose out on
the Astros here and they're down to six outs left,
(06:32):
or rather three outs left in their season, down five
to two of the Tigers in the night, if they
even if they lose out on the Astros, they've got
a hot Texans team right now or as I would
also like to call a resilient group, marked with the
way they bounce back from the game against Minnesota and
really had to be resilient the game against Jacksonville.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
Didn't they Yeah, they did, Craig, and you know they didn't.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Play their best ball.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Wasn't there a game.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
Defensively, they were pretty solid through out.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
They had some moments. They gave up a long run,
but the big play of the game was Caln Bullock,
the rookie.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
Safety from USC running down Tank Bigsby inside the five
and then they come up with a goal line stand
at the start of the fourth quarter as a result
of that, and that tipped the scales, I thought, even
though it was sort of hurky jerky from there until
the final drive, if the Jaguars punched it in and
make it the two score game, I think we might
be having a different conversation right now. The offense just
(07:27):
took a little while to get going.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
But CJ. Stroud, you know, he's one of these.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
Guys, Craig, and they finally have that guy where the
opponent has to be concerned if the ball's in his
hand with time left on the clock and they're down
to score whatever score to tie or take the lead.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
You better watch out.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
And c J.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
Stroud does it again, leads them down the field and
they win the game.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
So three and one is a good start, even though
they haven't played their best ball.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
CJ was where I was going next, Mark, and I
was going to ask you last year, such an explosion
onto the scene, and I know the expectations from when
you drafted that. I certainly the expectation is going to
be there. And we talked about him last year and
he had that brilliant rookie season. Safe to say, however,
probably teams might be more geared up, amped up to
(08:13):
try to defend him, and yet he continues to play really,
really well. So have you seen the progression on how
he's had to make the adjustment from rookie season the
second year player, when teams have gone and defensives has
made their adjustments to deal with him.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
Yeah, I think, you know, statistically it's going pretty well
so far. I mean, when you look at the record
three and one and he's top five in the league
and passing yards and all that, I think everything is
in progress very well for year two for CJ.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Stroud.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
The thing is they're not scoring as many points as.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
I think they would like right now, and it's not.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
As efficient and proficient as they would want, and a
lot of that has to do with the offensive line.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
Stroud himself, the things he's improved at. I think the
processing is even better this year.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
I think he understands way more about the game, even
though he understood.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
A whole lot last year. And the way he's moving
around in the pocket Craig is superior to what he
was doing last year, avoiding the rush, trying to create
a little extra time in real estate in the backfield
to launch accurate throws. He's doing that so well because
the protection hasn't been quite as good as it needs
to be. So we'll see if they can improve on that.
(09:25):
I mean, in the Minnesota game, it's just a festival
of errors as a pre snap stuff and holding penalties.
They had one driver where they had third and fourth
to twenty five and they ended up punting because they
took four consecutive penalties. So they've got to clean that up,
and I think they are in progress doing that. The
penalty bug bit them a little more against Jacksonville or
again additionally, so they have time to work on it.
(09:48):
You'd rather learn while winning than the other way around.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
So so far, so good.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Can some of the I don't know, for one of
a better word sluggishness on offense be trace to having
to deal with the in rebug in the backfield, not
having a healthy Joe Mixon for a lot of the time,
they're getting other contributors. Those of us who have cam
Akers on our fantasy team were happy to have him
as a substitute.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
But does that, I mean, does it?
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Can some of that be traced to what there's Jill
trying to get going with the ground game?
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (10:16):
Absolutely, because Joe makeson look so good.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
In the open a ram for one.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Hundred and fifty nine yards against the Colts, and you know,
Damian Pierce only had a few carries in that game,
but look pretty good. And we haven't seen him since either.
So you've been.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
Without your top two guys, and so now what do
you do? Well you go to cam Akers, who I
think looks pretty good.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Daria Goodbowally is another player to watch out where he
cut that game winning touchdown pass. There you are, Craig
at the end.
Speaker 5 (10:40):
Of the game. Inside thirty seconds, you're at the goal line.
You need to score and in the offset I formation
if Daria Googbiwally and British Brooks an undrafted rookie. So
who would have thought that at the beginning of training camp.
But that's the NFL, that's all of football. You have
to use everybody on the roster. You never know who's
going to contribute. And those guys run a play that
(11:00):
gets to the game winning touchdown.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
It was beautiful to see and.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
It's a tribute to the way they put this whole
thing together because not just the fifty three man roster,
the practice squad, elevating guys, how you work with the
people in your building, in your organization to manufacture wins,
and that's what they do and.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
That's what they've been doing here in the Nick Cassario,
Tamiko Ryan's mini era were in and I hope it continues.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Is is it safe to say that at that moment
what you're talking about, that's when you you and Andre
wear turn and look at each other booth and go.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
These guys in the backfield, did they come through?
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Well? You know, Dara had that game last year against
Tampa Bay where he actually kicked.
Speaker 5 (11:40):
A field goal because Cannie Fairbarn was hurt.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
So it's so interesting the contribution he can make. And
you know, his sister plays for Dallas and the WNBA.
She's outstanding. So the family was there and his sister
was here and at least is.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
A great moment.
Speaker 5 (11:56):
So we were never that surprised about Darry pulling off
something big because he's the ultimate role player for this team.
But you need people like that up and down the roster.
You need players to make those kind of contributions that you're.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
Going to win.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Talking Houston Texans football with the play by play voice
of the Texans Mark Vandam. You're here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred Zone Martin. Let me get your thoughts
on the defense through four ball games and what you
see you really like in the areas they're still trying
to clean up.
Speaker 5 (12:24):
Well, obviously it could have got a whole lot better
against Minnesota, but I think that was one of those stinker.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
Games, and every team has them.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
It just happens and you have to correct what went wrong,
and I hope that it doesn't happen again. They had
some tough moments in.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
That game, but they were put in a sudden change
right off the bat with a deflected pick and the
rest of it. They did really well.
Speaker 5 (12:43):
Against the run the first two games. I thought they
did pretty well against Jacksonville, but they still allowed over
one hundred yards. So they're going to find a way
to stiff in in that way. I think what you're
looking at is the unfinished product here. Will Anderson Junior
two and a half sacks, good start for him.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
The d tackles. They replaced the starters last year, and
I think.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
They're off to a pretty good start. But it's going
to get better when you get the Nico Autry back
from a suspension in a couple of games, because he
can play the outside.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
And the inside on the D line, and I think
that's really gonna help.
Speaker 5 (13:15):
You. Get Kurt Heinisch back this week. I think that's
gonna help as well. Daniel Hunters Hunter has been good,
but not who he will be.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
Just yet for this team, so I think it's good.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
On the front.
Speaker 5 (13:26):
Aziz al Shier is just amazing. I mean, what an
amazing guy, really good player. Played with Demiko in San
Francisco for for Jamiko, I should say, but he's like
Demko Ryans Junior and the secondary.
Speaker 4 (13:38):
What can I say about.
Speaker 5 (13:39):
Derrick Stingley, Junior outstanding lassater of the rookie from Georgia.
Klen Bullock had a pick at his first ever game.
He had that player that just talked about rookie safety.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
So a lot of youth and I think that it's
only going.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
To get better, Craig, as they.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
Play together and really start to.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Gel without question, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
The game, the headline game of this upcoming week in
the NFL is the game you have against the Buffalo
Bills on Sunday. How about your I remember last year
during the playoffs we were talking about a Buffalo. But
let me get your thoughts on this Bills team and
they come off smarting a little bit after what happened
to them in Baltimore last Sunday night.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
How about your thoughts on this matchup with Buffalo.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
It's always tough with Josh Allen because he's so good
throwing and running, and he's one of these guys. You know,
he's not Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
They're different, but it's similar in that you have to
worry about them running and throw it.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
And I think with Alan, he's so physically.
Speaker 5 (14:34):
So big, he's hard to bring down. You got to
bring some friends to bring him down, and he's always
a big part of their rushing attack, so that is
highly notable when you play them.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
They've replaced a lot.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
Of guys on defense, and you know, I know the
Ravens game didn't go according to their liking, but they
got off to a pretty good start prior to that,
and some of these defenders were playing pretty well. Now
they've got some injuries that they got to deal with.
I think what the Texas have to do, Craig, it's
almost like the Longhorse, right, the long Horns are back, right,
the long Horns are a hunted Now you have to
get used to being the hunted, the team that everybody
(15:09):
wants to be now. I guess with the Longhorns, people always.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
Want to beat the Longhorse, So maybe that's the best example.
But the Texans kind of snuck up on people just
to use like outside looking in language last year. This year,
they're not going to sneak up on anybody. But you
have to be able to hold surf.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
If you're one of these teams at home, you've got
to be able to protect the turf and play another
AFC quote power and deal with it. That's that the
Texans deserve to be considered.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
An AFC power yet, but they want to be that,
and they do have the juice and the tools to
be that. So go do it.
Speaker 5 (15:39):
Go be it and beat the Buffalo Bills this week.
And I think it's a marquee game for sure.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
Texans have a ton of.
Speaker 5 (15:44):
Primetime games, you know, with the Hall of Fame game,
they have seven National Window games when you go back
to the preseason, and they already played the Bears on
Sunday Night Football. They got some good ones coming up,
including a Dallas Monday Night or up in Big d
in November. So it's all going to be really fun
to watch. And it's a week to week.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
Thing, as you know. I mean, every week feels like
it's own little drama and season.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
You know, Mark, One of the things I always enjoy
visiting with you about is also the college game as well,
because of your years as the voice of the Miami Hurricanes.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
But do you still keep up with.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
The Canes and where you on edge on that hail
Merry thing that happened at the end of the game
with Virginia Tech last weekend.
Speaker 5 (16:21):
Not only do I keep up, but I'm listening to
both radio calls. I'm listening to my buddies Josephaky and
Don Bailey. I'm listening to Bill Roth of Virginia Tech
to trying to get the different perspectives of things. So
I was totally keeping up with that one. And I
do keep up with the Canes as much as I can.
You know, Craig, they haven't done anything since I've been there.
I'm just going but.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
They haven't had that kind of success that.
Speaker 5 (16:45):
They feel is their standard, you know, And they've had
some great starts and then they fizzle out.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
So I thought, oh no, we're going to get another
one of.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
These when they were.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
Down in that game, but they came back and won
and you've probably watched.
Speaker 4 (16:57):
But the quarterback ward is really good, so that can
heal a lot of wounds. So I'm looking forward to
seeing what they do the rest of the way.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Yeah, it'd be a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
But I'll tell you what, a lot of folks looking
forward to this matchup on Sunday between the Texans and
the Bills, and I'm right there at the top of
the list, especially on an.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
Open I gotta say though, before we say goodbye, I
was at the Longhorn opener. My son is now at
McComb School of Business, University of Texas. Okay, he's a freshman.
And I went to the game and we listened to you.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
We had you on the app.
Speaker 5 (17:28):
And it's a great experience, unbelievable. And you know, I
hadn't been to a Longhorn game in a while, so
it was a lot of fun for me.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
And he is so into it now he's bleeding burnt
orange and it's a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
All right.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
The next time you do that, give me some notice,
so we let me know you're coming. So we'd love
to have you pop upstairs and say him, bring you
some with us.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
Listen. If he's in the Macomb school. The dude is
serious about his academics. I'll just say that, you know,
and you know that right all over it.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
He's all over it. He is not like his dad
put it that way. He is, oh diligent. He got
elected to some freshman senate day. I mean, he's really
into it. So it's fun. It's a great school. I
love walking to campus, you know, I felt like, hey,
this is a walking school. You know. He lives over
on the West side and we walked all the way
across campus, but.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
It wasn't far.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
I think it's a great place to go to school, obviously, and.
Speaker 5 (18:18):
And you know, a great program and what a tremendous atmosphere.
Speaker 4 (18:21):
So I'll look forward to going to some more games.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Yeah, yeah, it'll be fun. It'd be great to see
you again. Hey, have a great call this Sunday. Looking
forward to the matchup, and I'll look forward to visiting
with you again down the road.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
I appreciate you taking the time, Mark, Thanks so much, Craig.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
All right, you bet that's Mark Vandermere, play by play
voice of the Houston Texans.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
And I knew that he had a son at you
t had to know he was in the McCombs school.
And I have to see my great guy. Always good
to visit with him. And and the Texans got it,
got it going right now, you like, are you impressed
by what you've seen Khalil from the Houston Texans through
four ball games? They're one loss uh is uh is
(19:02):
to the Vikings a really good Vikings did.
Speaker 6 (19:05):
Yeah, they're a real team. Yeah, I'm I'm pretty much.
I'm very impressed Strouds killing it. I thought they would
use digs more, and they're starting to use them a
bit more. I think that he's an underused weapon for them.
I've noticed sank Dale's taken a bit of the of
a back seat their defense. Uh, I had to drop
their defense in fantasy. Honestly, they were awful against the Jags.
(19:27):
They they kind of snuck out of there with that win.
But I think they're gonna be one of those teams
that progressively gets better instead of staying in like the same, same,
same level all season long. So I think they're I
think they're in a good situation.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Good teams can find a way to win when they
don't play their best, and I and I think that.
I think that's the case. Obviously for the Houston Texans.
They're in my opinion that well, it didn't have to be.
In my opinion, they are far and away the best
team in the AFC South. We'll see where it goes
from there. Anyone else has gone, it's gone final in Houston.
(20:02):
The Houston Astros season is over done, Benito. How about
the Astros being swept on their home field in two
straight by the Detroit Tigers.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
They win this afternoon five to two.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
The Tigers had that three run double by a Bonyees
in the top of the eighth inning, and that was
the separator. Houston actually had a two to one league
but the Astros when they look back at it, they
have three total runs scored in the two games combined,
three total runs scored, and that ultimately is the undoing
(20:38):
for Houston.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
So their season is over.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
Ranger fans like Cameron Parker and the other ones and
my cards can rejoice, right, they're shot in fouts and overdrive.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Now it was a quick kill.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
It was very, very quick and the Tigers, and what
an interesting divisional series matchup you'll have belt matchup Detroit
and Cleveland. I like it at two old school American
League teams. I know, Cleveland goes by the Guardians. Now
they're no longer the Indians, but it's still it's Cleveland.
(21:12):
It's old school stuff. And so to be Detroit and Cleveland,
and then whoever wins the Kansas City Baltimore. So here
we'll go to New York and play the Yankees. So
Astros are out and stunningly knocked out in two straight
at Minute May Park by the Detroit Tigers, who win
(21:32):
it all right, we'll keep you updated on the other
game as well. We're gonna hear more from long worn
men's basketball coach Rodney Terry as well.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
Coming up. That's coming up.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
We continue here on sports Medio AM thirteen under the
zone of the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
Mark Vandermire played by Playboy.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
So the Houston Texans for joining us there, and he
said he loved ambrosia, so we throw back with a
roll back here with a little more ambrosie here with
you're the only woman there. So yeah, so going to
that tomorrow night, so we'll see that. Somebody mentioned on
the text line he said Journey nineteen eighty three Brian
Adams was the opening act. I still left the T shirt.
(22:09):
It's a little snug these days. I sold those T
shirts that went on the on the road with Journey.
We did City Park Stadium in New Orleans because they
couldn't come to an agreement with the Superdome, so it
was outdoor venue on the fourth of July, pouring rain.
But we did that Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dallas, Houston, Norman, Oklahoma, Wichidaw, Kansas,
(22:37):
Vegas for three nights at the Aladdin Theater. Let's see
and then up into the Pacific northwest to Poka Tella, Idaho,
and Boise, Idaho.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
When we were in Pocatello, Brian Adams.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
Was the lead act and he was a real he
was just getting started and he was a real down
to earth guy. This is how down to earth Brian
Adams was. When we flew from New Orleans to Dallas,
Me and the other three guys that I worked with
on my particular crew with this with the T shirt
vending thing working for the band. Brian Adams flew with
(23:16):
us on Southwest Airlines. This is you know, he became
a mega rock star, but he was just starting out then.
That was when his first album and cuts like an
Ikea and all that, and he was sitting on the
sitting on the plane with us, just regular guy chatting
with us. By the time we got to Pocatella, Idaho,
U he had seen a few things and was pretty
(23:39):
pretty loose with his conversation to the extent that he
got up on stage opening up for Journey and what
was then called the Mini Dome. It's a it's one
of those old fashioned older dome stadiums.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
It was concrete. It looks like an airplane hangar seats like.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
Fifteen thousand, and they would hang the old post for
the football team Idaho State plays at home football games there,
they'd hang up from cables from the season the ceiling.
There was no bottom bar that went up to the
crossbar and it would just hang from the ceiling like that.
We saw that at both ends. Always remember that. And
it was called the Mini gone back there. It's got
a corporate name on it now. But he was up
(24:18):
there and he gets on stage, he goes, Poka jell Idaho,
how about you sput?
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Butts hey sput.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
But people were kind of like kind of like is
he kidding or what? But yeah, Brian Adams was the
opening act. So there you go. So anyway, that was
some memories there, and like I said, we're going to
see and broschamor I let's hear some more from Long
(24:47):
Worts basketball coach Rodney Terry, who's asked about a couple
of guys, including Jason Kent is another guy that they're
pretty excited about in his development.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
Yes, Sid, I'll tell you what.
Speaker 7 (25:00):
Uh you know Jason Kent, you know known his dad
a long time dad was a was was a coach
here at Houston Jellison at one time.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
Mom worked on our campus at one time as.
Speaker 7 (25:10):
Well, so very familiar with with the forty acres. He himself,
going on, played a couple of years at Bradley, played
the last two years in Indiana State. But he's one
of those guys again that can make an open shot.
He's an elite cutter, you know, we pride ourselves to
being a really good cutting team. He's a space that
got floor guy, a really good offensive rebounder, you know,
(25:34):
has a body to play physical and get up and
down the floor, you know, and stuff. So I think
he brings that along with obviously a lot of experience
as well, you know, and and hopefully the guy that
wants to continue to try to play with the chip.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
On the shoulder. Now.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
One thing that coaches always stress and they talk about
quite a bit is rebounding. The the art, the science,
the effort, everything about rebounding. And Kirk bowles from the
Austin American instead way it used to be the Austin
Americans say are now the Houston Chronicle, Kirk asked Roddy
about rebounding.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Does he want to see more out of.
Speaker 1 (26:05):
His guys in terms of you know, crashing the boards
and getting to the glass and getting rebounds.
Speaker 7 (26:10):
A season, I think every team in the country goes
into the year worrying about rebounding. Because what makes you
a great team, makes you a great team, you got
to be a team that takes care of the basketball.
You don't beat yourselves, right, So value and taking care
of the basketball. Physical mindset that allows you to play physical,
all five guys blocking out, rebounding down, you know. You know,
(26:33):
we want to try to play fast as well, where
every time down we want to want.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
To get a shot.
Speaker 7 (26:38):
But and then you know, obviously having a really good defense,
you know, and a big part of having a really
good defense and finishing possessions is being.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Able to block out. So you know, we work at it.
Speaker 7 (26:48):
We've got a great strength coach that's really done a
great job with our guys body over the course of
the summer to hope they give them a mindset to
come out and have application on the floor to play physical.
You know, when that's shot goes up, you look to
hit somebody. If you don't get the rebound, your man
doesn't get it, you know, and stuff. So a lot
of times it's not the biggest team. We could roll
(27:08):
out six you know, three or four or five seven
footers does no good for us, Right, It's what's in
your chest in terms of if you want to do it,
can't you want to play physical, It doesn't matter what
size you are, you know what I mean, we got
good size, you know and stuff. But I do think,
you know, on the perimeter, we've got good size. I
think our guards are rebound down really well for us,
and that'll be a plus for us because we'll be
(27:30):
able to get up and down the floor and play
fast the way we want to.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
All right, And then there were a couple of questions
about this new world that the Logworts are going into
into the Southeastern Conference. One of the questions asked point
blank was did he feel that the Big twelve is
a better basketball.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
League than the SEC?
Speaker 1 (27:51):
Because the Big tef is, you know, it's got some
good basketball programs in it and it's made some runs.
And so it was asked, does he think that the
SEC is behind the Big twelve conference in terms of basketball?
And Rodney was saying absolutely not.
Speaker 7 (28:03):
I think the SEC, you know, obviously has great leadership,
with Greg saying he's done a great job came really
building up the profile of the of the SEC from
top to bottom of no Knights, all the great coaches,
really good venues to play in, and really good players
in the SEC. So they put eight teams in the
(28:24):
tournament the last two years in.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
The Big Twelve.
Speaker 7 (28:28):
You know, we had eight teams in the tournament this
past year. We had seven the year before. So you know,
there's no drop off in the SEC. Man, We're right
at the top. Were one of the best leagues in
the country on basketball.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Stam one okay, and then one other thing about the
SEC and just kind of diving into what the styles
of play, and Rodney was asked, I do you notice
anything appreciably different about how the SEC goes about its.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
Business and playing as opposed to the Big Twelve?
Speaker 7 (28:54):
Well, they think again, if you if you really get
down to it now you're talking about you know what
translates and tournament. You know, is the Big twelve more
physical than the SEC? You know who files the most
right when you when you get to the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
You know, I think you start looking at those kind
of things.
Speaker 7 (29:12):
But I think there are teams in the SEC that
play extremely physical. I mean We played Tennessee the last
three years and been easily the probably the most physical
team we've played on our schedule, you know and everything.
So you know, I think there's you know, on any
given night, you're gonna have to deal with some physicality.
You have to deal with teams that could, you know,
push the ball really fast in transitioning, the teams that
(29:32):
can really score the ball.
Speaker 1 (29:33):
Yeah, And as a result of that, they'll played Tennessee
again now in conference play. Tennessee will come to Austin
for one game after they have played them in some
prior years and that, Hey, I want to do something
before we get to the break here. Last week, all
week long, we gave away opportunities, opportunities to win a
(29:57):
pair of tickets to see Deftones, and we're going to
do it again March twelfth at Moody Center. So what
you do is, if you haven't already downloaded the iHeartRadio app,
really easy to do and it's free.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
You do that.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
Then you search AM thirteen under the zone and you'll
see the button with a little microphone. Little red button's
got the microphone, and you tap that and you leave
us a message with the keyword you heard on Monday,
it was Deftones. Tuesday was Zone. Today's keyword moody. Moody
is today's keyword, and so you leave us a voice
(30:29):
message on our talkback features and hey, I was listening today.
I heard the keyword is moody. And you'll be entered
into the drawings as simple as that. We'll be back
to wrap up today's edition of the program on sports
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. Updating the baseball going
on right now in Baltimore. Kansas City continues to lead
(30:50):
the Orioles one nothing. They go to the fifth. A
great diving play by the second baseman Michael Massey with
runners at first and second and went out, prevented a
run from Austin the play, he was able to get
an out at first, there were two in scoring position,
and then a fly ball out into the inning. So
it's still won nothing Kansas City as that goes to
the top of the fifth.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
If they win that game.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
The Royals will have swept the Orioles on the road
in Baltimore to move on, just like the Detroit.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
Tigers did this afternoon. In case you didn't hear it.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
The Tigers got a three run pinch hit double in
the top of the eighth inning, and that brooke a
two to two tie. They were actually down two to
one going to the eighth. Then they had one run
score on a wild pitch, and then the double coming
off Josh Hater allowed three runs to score and the
Tigers beat the Astros five to two.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
Houston swept on its own field. They're done.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
Season over season over, so right now, Danny Columbay is
pitching for the Orioles as Kansas City bats in the
top of the fifth and it's won nothing Royals as
they bat.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
In the top half of the fifth inning.
Speaker 1 (31:58):
Detroit, by virtue of sweeping Houston, now goes to Cleveland
that starts this week. Year old, your eyes lit up
on that one. I told you that Khalil that they're
going to play the Guardians of Tigers and Guardians Cleveland
Detroit old school Russ.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
I love it. I love the Vision Series matchup.
Speaker 6 (32:14):
Were teams that were bad for a long time finally
have their day.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
I love seeing it. Yeah, well, it's it's happening, and.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
The Yankees are awaiting the winner of this Baltimore Kansas City.
Here by the way, in case you're won about the Yankees.
Last time the Yankees won a World Series two thousand
and nine. It's been fifteen years since the Yankees have
won a series. I remember when the Dodgers won in
twenty twenty, people said, I had the Dodgers would allow
us to know first time in thirty two years.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
They had not won since nineteen eighty eight.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
So obviously I was very very excited about that when
it did, when it did happen, about that, But Baltimore
hasn't won a World Series since nineteen eighty three. The
Royals won in twenty fifteen. This is their first postseason
appearance since twenty fifteen when they won the World Series.
Of course, Cleveland has not won the World Series since
nineteen forty eight, longest gap. Remember they had the three
(33:09):
to one lead on the Cubs in twenty sixteen and
it got away from them. Well, now they will match
up with the Detroit Tigers in a Division series. Listen,
I'm out for the next two days, this being the
open date. I'm taking care of a couple of personal
business things. And then then I, like I said, We're
going to yacht rocket up to the Metroplex tomorrow and
(33:31):
see Ambrosia and john Ford Coley will do that.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
But just going to enjoy a weekend.
Speaker 1 (33:36):
I'll be back on Monday, starting with our long Worns
Monday bringing you Coach Sarks news conference. Hopefully Cameron Parker
will be back tomorrow Andrew Zimma will be in as well.
Thank you, Khalil, appreciate you stepping into
