Speaker 1 (00:03):
We're back.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
It's the Craigway Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster and
voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
We had just started to get into talking about injured
guys and the injury report, which brings us, as it
does every Thursday at this time, to our DJC Law
Injury Update for you and brought to you by DJC Law.
So here it is the official Texas injury report. The

(00:40):
ones we knew that were definitely going to be out CJ.
Baxter and Christian Clark also Velton Gardner out and so
that's three running backs out. Colin Page the walk on
from Anderson remains questionable for this game. Tatea have backup
the safety listed as question well, and Michael Kern the

(01:01):
punter listed as questionable. He said, well, what happens, you know,
if the long Words have to punt, it would be
the sophomore walk on, Ian Ratliffe, who would then step
in the punt if that is the case. So we'll
find houtly long Wrns don't have to punt, you know,
that would be nice if it went that way. And
then of course the two big notes, quin Ewers and

(01:21):
Derrick Williams. As we mentioned last segment, both listed as
probable and Sark is expecting both guys to be able
to play tomorrow for Oklahoma. As we pointed out, all
of these guys were definitely out. Wide receivers Jaden Gibson,
Jealo Ferru, Nick Anderson, and Andrew Anthony all definitely out.
Also out defensive backs Gentry Williams and Kendall Dobie Adobe,

(01:46):
offensive lineman Jerian Hatchett, and then listed as questionable tight
end Kate McIntyre, and wide receiver Dion Burks. But as
we mentioned, Pete Damil of ESPN reported today that he
that he is learning that Burke's is going to be out.

(02:06):
So really, what you're talking about in terms of available receivers,
the senior who started off his collegiate career Missouri JJ
Hester would be really the most experienced of those. Then
you have Brendon Thompson, the former long worn is a
junior now, and then you would have the sophomore Jique's Peedaway,

(02:30):
and then you've got freshmen like Zion Kearney and Zion
Reagan's a couple of freshmen there. So they have been
hit pretty hard at the receiver position, which if you
take away some of the playmaking receiving guys and the
running game has been a struggle there. Rushing attack right

(02:52):
now is ranked one hundredth in the NCAA statistically. So
if if they are limiting guys like Javonte Barnes and
Taylor Tatum and Gavin Sawchuk and Sam Franklin those guys,
it does put more pressure on the freshman on the quarterback,
on Michael Hawkins, even though he is mobile, even though

(03:14):
he can be a danger in terms of trying to defend,
but if he has fewer weapons to work with, then
A you don't necessarily need to have anybody spy him,
and b they can kind of lock down on him
and try to go after him and enforce problems. So
that's that would be the biggest issues certainly for Oklahoma

(03:35):
as they try to get through the injury. But as
we mentioned the Texas injury report, nothing really shocking there,
and the most encouraging news out of all of that
is that when you Weers and Derek Williams are expected
to be available, and that's our DJC law injury update. Okay,
a couple other things to get to with regard to

(03:57):
college football, and we were talking about Michael Hawkins one
way or another, you know, just one way or another, good, bad, indifferent,
however however you choose to describe it. Michael Hawkins Junior

(04:17):
is going to make history this weekend. We heard Toby
Rowland talk about this that he will make history as Hawkins,
in just his second career start, will be the first
ever true freshman to start at quarterback in the Red

(04:39):
River rivalry. So now we've seen another guy. We saw
Caleb Williams step and he didn't start that game. Spencer
Ratler did, but and Caleb Williams obviously made a difference.
And that was before he ended up transferring to USC
and now he's playing his trade the NFL with the
Chicago Bears. But this will be the first time a
true freshman has ever started this. It's sort of interesting

(05:02):
because he's a Metroplex kid. He grew up in the
Dallas forward there and played at Friscoe Emerson, a team
that reached the Final four surprisingly a year ago. And
he's really good. But this is different. As we know,
this game is different. There's there's a lot that's different
about it and it could be unnerving to some. He's

(05:26):
he's always struck me when I saw his highlights and
followed his career into high school and the interviews we
had on the television show with coach Kendall Miller as
head coach, and when they've talked about him, is that
he's just been really calm and yet focused. And what
was it when we had Cale Gundhy on darning the

(05:48):
way Cale knew his dad recruited his father who played
at Oklahoma and said he was one of those really focused,
driven guys. And probably the apple is not rolled far
from the tree here, So gonna be interesting to see
how he how he operates in this environment. That that's
that's gonna be an awful lot of fun to see

(06:09):
how this, you know, how this all rolls down. Can
they can he be a factor in this to help
this Oklahoma offense get moving against this long horn defense.
And they've seen plenty of things and they know that
Texas comes in number one and how good the Longhorns are.

(06:30):
I did see some sound bites this weekend of Oklahoma
players like Danny Stutsman some of the other ones going
it doesn't matter what they rang, this is Texas O
you when we had the SoundBite from David Benda saying
it doesn't matter, that's the whatever fourteen and a half
point spreads this that whatever. I haven't checked the Lions.
It's still sitting on fourteen and a half at last year.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Do not know, but I'm guessing it's got to be
pretty close.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
So but they've all said the same thing. It doesn't
really matter. It just it doesn't make a difference.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Still, fourteen and a half has not changed at all.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
That's kind of weird that there's been zero movement on that.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
I think a lot of people just don't know what
to do here. They're thinking, Okay, it's it's a rivalry game.
It does not matter what the rankings are, what the
spread is. But then there's also some people are looking
at Oklahoma so banged up right now going into this game,
a true freshman quarterback versus the Texas team that's five
and zho and number one. So there's probably a little
bit of wagering on both sides here trying to figure

(07:30):
out what to do because all the analytics, I think
Texas is going to win this game by two touchdowns.
But then there's this, you've got a factor in that
none that actually matters when it's a game like this.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Yeah, that's one. That's the one area of shortcoming in
the computer is the computer cannot gauge the emotional impact
on this game. I don't know. We've heard all the
phrases like what Rudy Tom Johnovan, never underestimate the heart
of a champion, you know that the whole bit, or

(08:00):
don't underestimate the emotion this game engenders. There was a
lot made of Danny Stutsman with the emotional address he
had to his teammates before the game about what had
happened the year before and forty nine and nothing and
that's not us and let's show what we can do.
Don't you think there'll be some Longhorns who have similar
things to say, especially the ones who are fourth year seniors,

(08:24):
fifth year senior, sixt year seniors. We were saying, don't
let this, don't let a loss be your last moment
to this group as a longhorn. So I imagine there's
going to be that did say on Long Worn Weekly
that we recorded last night and again you'll be able
here tonight at seven o'clock that he's been really proud

(08:45):
of the approach that his guys have taken throughout the
course of the week in practice, that they have not
allowed the outside noise and attention and excitement and all
of those things to permeate within their walls and affect
what they've had to do. He said, They've they've gone

(09:06):
about their business in a really good fashion, and that's
been pretty impressive for him to see. All Right, coming up,
we'll talk about one other. There's another kind of a
big deal college football game other than Texas o you
this weekend, So we'll get to that coming up and
more when we continue on this Thursday afternoon here on
