Speaker 1 (00:00):
Craig Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. With you or
with you all the way up until five o'clock this afterdoon.
Coming up in a few minutes, Gene Watson, our MLB
insider from the Chicago White Sox front office, will join
us and he'll we'll talk about the baseball playoffs down
to Major League Baseball's final four. In the American League.
(00:20):
The Yankees and Guardians played Game one of the ALCS
tonight at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The second game
of the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers and the
Mets about to get underway in a few minutes Game
two at Dodgers Stadium, Los Angeles, winning last night's series
opener nine to nothing. We'll Getjeene's thoughts on the baseball
(00:41):
playoffs to this point and what he projects going forward.
We'll do that, but of course this is a long
Worns Monday, so we should hear from Long Horn's head
coach Steve Sarcasian from the weekly news conference, which we
brought you in its entirety live this morning here on
the Zone. And here's some other thoughts. We brought you
(01:02):
some of the comments last hour. But here's some more
from Sark. First of all, you know, we just had
the story about Kirby Smart talking about the shoving the
Mississippi State quarterback he's trying to get through to Coach Schuman,
his defensive coordinator, about they wasn't happy about how they
religned aligned. Having said all that, George's defense has played
largely very successfully, and Sark was asked, what makes that
(01:24):
Georgia defense successful?
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Well, I think one, they've got a really good scheme,
you know. I mean, you know, Kirby Smart and Will
Musschamp Glenn Schuman all on the same defensive staff. Those
are probably three of the top defensive minds in college football.
And then and their sound and what they do. They
recruit really good players. You know, they're big and physical upfront,
(01:47):
They've got great length in the secondary. They always have
very smart, heady safeties to communicate you know, what they're
trying to do. Third down, they give you a ton
of exotic pressures and different fronts. And with all of that,
they end up playing a lot of almost two man coverage.
So now you're not only having to beat one guy
(02:07):
to get open, you have to beat two. But that's
that's the scheming part, you know, and they do a
heck of a job with that, and so I think
it's a combination of they got a great scheme and
a great staff to go along with you know, really
talented players that play hard, you know, and they're long
and physical, and so those two things combined can make
it difficult, you know. I think on the flip side,
(02:28):
for us, it's you know, like I touched on earlier,
always just trying to find somewhere where you can maybe
exploit something that's maybe not a strength and maybe you know,
but I don't know if they have too many weaknesses
that way, and so we just try to do our
best to find some plays they can get us another
first down and maybe get the ball in the end zone.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Okay, that's one thing, and then one I think most
college football fans, especially the ones who really follow programs closely,
understand that home games. Home games for college football teams
are big recruiting weekends when potential future members of that
(03:10):
football program get a chance coming in and on a
recruiting weekend. So you can imagine if you were a
top blue chip recruit and Texas was after you was
interested in offering you a scholarship. You would probably very
(03:30):
easily be able to be at this football game this Saturday.
All you have to do is say, hey, I'd like
to take my visit during the Georgia game. And they
would and they would say sure, why not, Well, it
is a big recruiting weekend. So Sark was asked at
the news conference, you know, does anything alter or change
or the impact of a big game like this when
(03:53):
you do have these types of high level recruits coming.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
In Every season you go through and you know, we
invite a ton of recruits to games and different things,
but every year, naturally you have those one or two
games that recruits really want to come to and they
kind of circle it even in the summertime, and this
was one of those games. And so I think we're
fortunate that we got a night draw, that it's a
night game, and that allows a lot of those kids
(04:20):
that play Friday nights to drive in or fly in
on Saturday and be here for the ball game at night.
And obviously a great atmosphere and DKR and I'm sure
we'll have the smoke and the light show and the
drones and all the stuff CDC's got planned, you know,
for everybody, and I think the kids really appreciate that
to know that Longhorn Nation supports their team, but also
see a really high level of football and see us
(04:42):
compete against what again, like I said, what has been
the standard of college football here now for about half
a decade or so. And so great opportunity to showcase
what our program's about. Great opportunity to showcase what our
fan base is about. But also during the day, great
opportunity to showcase with the University of excessus about and
what the city of Austin has to offer.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Okay, all right, so there's some more thoughts from coach
sark We're gonna hear more from Longhorn's head coach Steve
Sarkisian throughout this hour and next hour as well. But
up next we'll talk Major League Baseball. Geene Watson, our
MLB insider, joins us to break down the National League
and American League Championship series when we continue on Sports
(05:25):
Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
