Speaker 1 (00:22):
It's the Craig Web Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way. Continuing
here this afternoon, by the way, updating game, the Dodgers
still trail the Mets, Mets up six to nothing as
they bat in the top half of the fifth inning
(00:45):
with two outs in that game, again the big blow.
Francisco Lindor had a lead off home run as the
Dodgers go with a bullpen game today and then a
grand slam from Mark Vinto's with two outs in the third.
And that's the difference in the ballgame. That and the
fact that the Dodgers have not been able to touch
(01:06):
Sean and I. He has been every bit as impressive
today for the Mets as Jack Clarity was last night
for LA. So it looks like that series is going
to be headed to New York, even at a game
a piece. More from long wrn's head coach Steve Sarkasian.
He was asked about his relationship with Kirby Smart. I
think it was Kirk Bowles who asked him that said,
(01:28):
have you known how He said, I don't know how
well you know him? You both were assistants under Nick Saban?
Are your friends? What your relationship is like? That I've
noticed over the years, and I'm talking like a couple
of decades. That is a Kirk Bowles go to question.
(01:48):
He's asked it many times. I remember going back to
Mac Brown asked him how well he knew Bob Stoops
initially asked him how well he knew so and so,
you know, over the years, different coaches. So the question
was put to Sark does does he know Kirby Spark
very well? The fact that the two were former assistants
under Nick Saban.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Well, I have a ton of respect for Kirby first
of all, and yeah, I we do have a very
good relationship and we uh we we actually have a
lot of fun together and we share a lot of
a lot of funny stories about our mentor that that
only that only he and I can talk about. You
guys don't get to don't get to know those. But
but again, a ton of respect, and I think the
(02:30):
premise of our programs is probably very similar. Obviously, ours
has got a little bit of an offensive perspective because
of me and his a defensive perspective. But I think
the way we built our teams, the style in which
we try to play the game, and our belief in
physicality and running the ball. Those things matter, are our
belief in special teams. You know, a lot of the
(02:51):
things that we do and and how aggressive we are
and recruiting are very similar that way, And so I
respect that, you know, our respect of the way he's
built that program at Georgia. I respect the way that
those his teams play. I respect the aggressive nature in
the way his coordinators call the games. And so I
think that's why that the challenge is fun that way.
And I always love competing against kind of buddies, you know,
(03:14):
because it's like when you were growing up as a kid,
it was like competing with your brothers. Nobody you wanted
to beat more than your brother or your buddy. And so, hey,
I love the challenge I'm feeling. I'm sure Kirby feels
the same way. You know that, Hey, this is a
heck of a challenge for both of us, and it
should be. It should be a great night for college football.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
As we pointed out, Texas his ranked number one in
the country UH in both the AP and the Coaches poll,
and as we have pointed out Sark has pointed it
out more often than we have said it. But it
is true that those polls are nice and everything, and
(03:53):
it's good for fans, good for media, but it doesn't
ultimately determine whether your team's me in the college football playoff,
especially this year more than ever before with the expansion
to twelve and the cfp's committee that CFP committees rankings,
those are the ones that will matter, although Sark also
(04:14):
points that if you win your conference championship in a
Power four league like the SEC, you're going to get
a bye in the first round. You're in the playoff,
and you're going to get a buye. Nevertheless, Sark was
asked if he is able to take stock enough of
what has happened so far to enjoy this ride, to
enjoy what's been going on, to enjoy being number one.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
It was a long day, and so I when I
got home, I literally put my phone down and I
watched three games right in row that had fantastic finishes,
you know, and just to watch all those kids compete
in those three games, and to watch the energy in
the stadium, and to watch coaches make decisions, some of
(04:55):
which were great decisions, some of which I'm sure guys
may kick themselves a little bit over just just to
watch it all unfold. I've said this before, but I
feel like in my four years here, college football is
at an all time high. You know, the the style
of play, the excitement of the game, the exposure that
college football is getting right now, the the flair for
(05:19):
the dramatic. It just seems like it's it's heightened even more.
And so we're we're lucky, man, and you I think
you guys should feel lucky that you get to cover
what's going on in college football right now. And you know,
we've got it. We get we get that show here
Saturday night, and so I'm I'm happy for our fans
that that we kind of get to be part of
that prime time excitement and to show off what dk
(05:42):
R is all about. You know, the goal is that
you're on the winning end, because I know, you know
half of those teams in those games. You know, we're
on the losing end of some gut wrenching games. And
the beauty of it, though, too, is the way the
playoff is set up. You can you can overcome if
you lose one of those type games and still have
an opportunity to win a national championship when before maybe
(06:04):
you didn't. And so I don't know. It's just I
watched three unbelievable endings the other night. You know that
that Oregon ending, the LSU ending, and then that Kansas
State ending. Those were three fantastic football games that as
a fan of college football, I just thoroughly enjoyed.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
What Sart probably didn't thoroughly enjoy was that first try
on that pass downfield for Matthew Golden on that on
the double pass. The second one, while being a little short,
nevertheless it worked because Gunner Hill made a spectacular grab
on that to set up a touchdown. So Sark was
asked about the Matthew Golden throwing sequence.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
You know, Matt, we had both those plays up obviously
in the game, and the first one we felt way
better about the play, and we knew that as a staff,
and clearly Ryan Wingo was opened by about fifteen yards
and it wasn't a And so the second one, I
wanted to give him a chance to redeem himself a
(07:04):
little bit and I had a feeling that might cover
it a little better, which they did and was a
heck of a catch by gunner Helm, you know, down
there to the one, but uh, you know again his
first both throws were in my good, bad and ugly
tape this morning, and if anybody wants to know, when
I saw the throw, it reminded me of something that
reminded me of fifty cents first, you know, the first pitch,
(07:26):
and so we kind of we kind of showed that
after that throw to get a chuckle out of the guys.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
It's a good way to describe it there. All right,
we'll be back to wrap up today's program. Bureau on
Sports Radio a of thirteen under the Zone
