Speaker 1 (00:07):
And we're back to the Craig Way Show.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Have a message for Craig, share it by using the
talkbacked feature on the Ihearts radio.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
App here on a Longhorns Monday on Sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone. Before we get back to hearing
from Longhortons head coach Steve Sarkisian, let me let the
Houston Texans certainly deserve and merit mentioned as well, very

(00:37):
thorough in their road win at New England, beating the
Patriots forty one twenty one. And here are the Texans
rolling along and I would say one of the best
teams in the AFC right.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Now and more impressive Craig, considering all the injuries that
are starting to suffer defensively without a couple of cornerbacks
in that game against New England, obviously without Nico Collins,
who was having one of the best seasons in the NFL,
and you're thinking, Okay, maybe this will be a drop
off geame for CJ.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Stroud.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Nope, look look like they're gonna score one hundred points
in the first quarter. Ended up just hammering New England,
I mean Newland defensively. There was a couple we just yikes,
moments on defense with the lack of effort some of
their players. But if you're Houston Texans fan, I mean,
they're a team that it feels like every week they're
getting better and better. And some of their wins have

(01:28):
been a little dicey. You know, it could have gone
either way, but you know, they came up with a victory,
and now each week they've gotten three in a row.
They're just getting a little bit better and better and
now set up for a real fun showdown at Lambeau
and Screen Bay on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Let's hear some more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian
on this Long Horns Monday. It is from the news
conference earlier that they heard live here on the Zone.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
It was pointed out.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
I think it was our friends Center Golden the Austin
American State's been pointed out to sark that this is
a marquee quarterback match up at dk R on Saturday night.
Carson Beck of Georgia, when you were in Texas and
he was asked if he remembered being part of a
marquee matchup when he played at BYU, And then the
second question and there were two questions. The other was

(02:15):
about Quinn you were was taking responsibility for his mistakes,
how he has done that, and what he does to
do that, and whether Sark has to say anything to
him about it, and how he gathers himself.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
I don't know if I ever had a Marquee matchup.
There's probably a lot of other There's probably a lot
of other better players than me. I don't know if
I was ever the Marquee guy. Yeah, he was a
true freshman. Yeah he was a good player.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
You know.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
I think one thing that Quinn and I think any
one of our players would kind of say the same thing,
like we really believe in accountability, and accountability is taking
responsibility for one zone to the actions. And I don't
know if you remember, even a couple of weeks ago,
Jayden Blue came up to me and said, I can
play better. And it's like when you can really be

(03:01):
honest and watch the tape or come out of a
game and know how you played and say, okay, where
is their room to be better and then try to
address it.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
And I think that's what Quinn's saying.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
And it's probably a little easier for a veteran player
to acknowledge that than a younger player, but we really
try to instill that into our players. Is about let's
just take accountability for our actions, whether it's on the
field or off the field, and then and then move forward,
and how do we get better because of it? And
so I just think that's a sign of kind of
what we try to instill in the players. And Quinn

(03:32):
had a lot of that innately, but I do think
our culture has helped that as well.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Okay this Sometimes in news conferences, Sark will be asked
questions that involve phrases, and sometimes it's words he has
used to describe things in the culture and the program.
So then the reporters are interested in finding out in

(03:58):
a little better, more in depth to tail what exactly
is meant by some of those phrases. For example, the
when Sark talks about in the recruiting game being able
to line up young men get commitments from young men
who are, in Sarks words quote enamored by us and

(04:19):
in this day and age of nil and everything else,
Sark was asked what goes into getting a potential recruit
to be quote unquote enamored by the University of Texas.

Speaker 4 (04:31):
I think through a level of consistency. That's the first part,
you know, I don't. I don't just touch on it,
you know, once a week or you know, once a
month or the first, you know.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Team meeting.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
I try to consistently talk about those things. I try
to force their dialogue on those things. We do a
lot of different exercises throughout the summer. On our Culture
Wednesday activities. We do an exercise every Friday at our
team meeting before we go to the hotel or before
we get on the plane. So we do a lot
of exercises that tries to promote the team and try

(05:04):
to promote acknowledging their teammates, whether guys that they appreciate
or guys that they that inspire them. We try to
promote you know, you know, gratitude lists and being grateful
for the things that we have and not what we
don't have. And so, but that lends itself to because
I believe in culture, and I don't you know, not

(05:25):
everybody does, probably the way that we do. But I
do believe culture beats talent. And I said that before
when maybe we weren't the most talented teams.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
But culture beats talent.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
But I've also said that culture and talent combined is
really dangerous. And I think that's why we've become a
dangerous team is because we've built a culture, but we've.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Assembled talent along the way.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
And that's a credit to our players and their their
belief in the culture and the character that they came
in with to pour into that culture and make it
better than it even was before.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Okay, So then the follow up, well, what is the
message to the team this week and getting ready for
this Georgia team. Does he have any specific different message
than what he has on a week by week basis?

Speaker 4 (06:11):
The message didn't change at all today and I and again,
like I said, I believe in consistency and messaging. You know,
when we start conference play, the first thing I talk
about this is an SEC championship game. You know, every
week we play this this league, we have no divisions,
there's a lot of teams, and any blemish on your
record could potentially knock you out of that that championship game.

(06:34):
And so we think of every game that way, whether
it's Mississippi State, Oklahoma now now Georgia. The messaging stays
very consistent on a lot of the things that we
talk about because I think the players appreciate consistency if
they know if they know that I'm consistent with what
I'm doing, then and when I'm asking them to be

(06:55):
consistent of what they do week in and week out,
it's a little easier if I'm embodying the same thing.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
The appeal is this is you know, this is always you.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
You love those games that if you want to call
them the measuring stick or or kind of a barometer
for where you at at what juncture of the season
against the really good team and a team that has
you know, been in national championship games, conference championship games.
Is one games at a really high level and a
head coach who's who's done it at the highest level.
That's that's the fun part, you know. It's like, Okay,

(07:28):
let's see if what we do on a regular basis
is good enough and that that's what we can find.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Out Next Sark delivered the unfortunate and injury news with
regard to Texas.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
UH, Derek Is will be out the remainder of the season. UH,
he'll have surgery here in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, Isaiah,
were were I feel better about today than I felt
Saturday when he couldn't when he couldn't finish the ball game.
So I'm optimistic, but like I said, we'll kind of
He'll be day to day. We'll see how looks as
we get kind of into Wednesday Thursday. Carson Beck, I

(08:04):
know really well. He was committed to US at Alabama
and then ultimately decommitted and went to went to Georgia.
He's a great young man, military background from his father.
They you know, he's a big, strong kid, can make
all the throws. You know, he's got a real presence
in the pocket, can make all the throws.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
And I think they have a scheme that fits him.
You know.

Speaker 4 (08:25):
They believe in the play action pass, they believe in
the double moves. They're gonna take plenty of shots down
the field. They utilize the tight end, they utilize the
running backs, and so there's nothing from a from a
throw game that he really can't do. And he's played
enough football now too. It's kind of hard to confuse
guys when they've played that much football. And so that's

(08:46):
gonna be our challenge, right, how do we disrupt him
in the pocket. How can we you know, create a
little bit of hesitation in him of of from a
from a coverage standpoint, and then we're gonna have to
play really well, uh, you know, in tight coverage because
he's gonna make these throws and they have elite speed
on the perimeter. You know, they're built very similar like us,
you know, whether it's you know, Aaron Smith or Levette.

(09:07):
I mean, those guys can all go and so now
you have to guard them and they have an NFL
quarterback throwing.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
It to them.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
All right. Some thoughts on Carson Beck to Georgia quarterback,
as well as Derek Williams being out for the rest
of the season with his injury. Although they're hopeful that
Isaiah Bond might be available this week, I have a
feeling he'll wind up questionable. This is questionable in the
injury report on Wednesday. We'll hear more from the Loghorn's
head coach, Steve Sarkisian coming up when we continue on
Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
