Speaker 1 (00:00):
We'll talk a little bit more about this in the
four o'clock hour because we've got of a real pointed
example and it's and it's more about how fans and
media and certain different people get antsy this time of
year when things are not going the way that you
think they should be. And we did talk a little
(00:20):
bit about it obviously in the first hour of the
program when we had the audio from Jerry Jones and
how he's kind of bristling a little bit and get
a little sensitive, you know. So there's some things that
are making him not be in the best of moods
these days when it comes to interviews or whatever. Well,
it would probably be this way, I would say, obviously.
(00:45):
And this is not whatever flexing on Oklahoma or anything
like that. We just we just read the reports and
the stuff going on. Remember in this town, with this school.
The weekly press conference with Long Corn's head coach Steve
Sarkisian is on Mondays. It's part of our Longhorns Monday presentation.
(01:07):
We begin our coverage from the UT campus at eleven
o'clock in the morning on Monday. Sark goes live at
eleven thirty with his weekly press conference. We do that
that's our Longhorns Monday presentation. Then we recapped the news
conference during these proceedings on this show the afternoon. A
lot of college football programs do their press conferences on Monday,
(01:28):
some like Oklahoma do it on Tuesday, So that meant
today was the first time for Brent Venables to face
the media since the postgame press conference on Saturday. Now,
you were pretty busy after the game. They're the cop
(01:49):
bol getting to the Texas media ambue. You weren't in
the Oklahoma news conference. Were you were? Did you?
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Did you get there in time?
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Yeah, that's right. One goes before the other. That's why
we were to get Sar called so quickly while Venables
was on the Were you able to get a vibe
for how it was going and the things that we're
having to talk about.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
He was spicy and he was asked some questions that
we talked about yesterday. When Sark was asked about the
Billy Bowman and the Jack title comments, and Sark gave
an answer which we weren't surprised.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Not my problem we won, is what he said.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yeah, Venables just asked the question by Barry Trammel from
the I don't know if he's with the Oklahoma and.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
He's with the Tulsa World Now, Barry Trammel was And
Barry was the one who asked the question last week.
And I said, this is a classic hard boiled sports writer,
sports columnist question. It's a kind of question that Kirk Bowles,
formerly the Austin American Statesman now the Houston Chronicle, would ask.
It's a question that Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning
(02:50):
News might ask, and it's certainly a question that Barry
Trammel would ask. He asked Brent Venables when text this
is good, like, this is your job harder? And and
was like, I don't you know, I don't pay attention
what they're doing that has nothing to do with what
we're trying to establish our own thing, blah blah blah.
(03:11):
But he said, does it make your job harder when
they're good? So so Barry asked that question. So what
did Barry ask him on Saturday?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Well, he asked Venables if he was alarmed at the
difference in talent between Texas and Oklahoma and what we've
seen in two of the last three years. Inventables gave
a very spicy answer. I don't remember the exact quote verbatim,
and he was morely, I don't know, alarmed, I don't know.
You could tell he was very annoyed with the question,
(03:41):
and he was asked something similar about the result and
kind of fired back two three four word response. But
a lot of it was coming from the Oklahoma side,
and you can kind of tell. You can always kind
of tell how the fan base is thinking based off
the reporters questions, because obviously they're riding to their fans,
(04:02):
and what they write is shaped by what the fans
perception of the program is. And the perception Oklahoma right
now is not that great for Brent Vnnables and a
thirty four to three loss does not help. That's now
two out of three games against taxes where they have
failed to score a touchdown. I mean, forty nine to
IZ think was embarrassing in year one, but year three
for Ventables, thirty four to three might be even worse
(04:23):
because he's had two years to prepare for this season.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
So things aren't great in Norman right now. Well, here's
the reason why I bring all this up. There's two things.
First of all, the media in Oklahoma is always fascinated
and They're not the only ones in this town. It
gets this way sometimes, and it certainly does in other towns,
both at the NFL and collegiate level, but they're fascinated
(04:47):
with the job security of coaches. I got to ask what.
I did three or four interviews last week, as I
always do that week with Oklahoma media, and on one
of the shows, I actually was asked, if Sark loses
this game to Oklahoma's E in trouble? Really okay? I
was like, no, No, everybody's behind him. It's okay. I've
been asked that question every single year that I've been
(05:11):
on that I've done a show going all the way
back to the first part of this decade, not this decade,
the first part of the century, early two thousands. If
Mac loses this, is he gonna lose his job? Is
he in trouble? Blah blah blah, And asked that all
the way up to me, and I didn't even really
think that we get asked that this year, but I did,
you know, if he loses this game, and are they
(05:31):
you know?
Speaker 2 (05:32):
So?
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Anyway, at his news conference today, and this is the
other part of this, Brent Vennables confirmed that he has
discussed the possibility of red shirting Jackson Arnold since Michael
Hawkins has assumed the role at quarterback. He did say
that for now, Arnold will continue to be an option
(05:55):
in the second half of the regular season. He said,
it's been discussed between us. What was told to Jay
is if we put you in, it's because we need
you to help us go win. We're certainly sensitive to everything.
We're not sitting here with our head in the sand
or naive to what it is. But man, he's a
great teammate. He wants to be the starting quarterback at
the University of Oklahoma.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
We were debating this in the press box in that
second half when the outcome was not in doubt. Hawkins
was struggling and Arnold's on the sideline helmet on warming up.
Are they going to put him in? Are they going
to try and keep his red shirt in tact? And
it appears they're going to let him red shirt this season,
which is kind of surprising because I don't think there's
anything from Michael Hawkins junior that gives a lot of
(06:35):
Oklahoma fans hope.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
But well, and that rides only second only to the
hottest speculation is that Jackson Arnold will be the starting
quarterback for the Mississippi State Bulldogs next year, playing for
his old offensive coordinator, Jeff Levy, who's now the head coach,
although they seem to like Michael Van Buren, the freshman
this year who's playing quarterback for them.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Played well against Georgia this past weekend.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
And remember they had Blake Shapin coming back next year
because he had gotten injured and couldn't do it. All right,
We'll be back to wrap up Hour number two here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
