Speaker 1 (00:00):
To go over this college football stuff a couple of
different perspectives. Most of the major websites and publication type
things update their college football playoff rankings the teams that
are most likely to get in.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
You know, it's so funny.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
For years and years, I mean several years, we would
look at the bowl projections every week. I've scarcely even
glanced I think one time I looked at a bowl
projection list. This is all about the playoff, obviously, unless
you're in the G five league and the chances of
you getting into the playoff are slim.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
But we've talked about that.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
There's been more conversation about the G five teams this
season and ever before because there's going to be a
slot for a G five team in the playoff. So
that's why we're paying more attention to who Army plays
and who Navy. And by the way, pretty big G
five game this week in Memphis, Memphis against North Texas

(01:05):
and both teams looking to stay out of near the
top of the American Conference race. But anyway, there's different
perspectives on this. Heather Dinnich is the longtime writer college
football writer for ESPN. She is deep in the weeds
all the time and listen, and she's really really good,
and she's very very well connected with the playoff committee.
They respect her. So she finds out and unearths little

(01:29):
things here and there and goes to all that. Well,
she projects the top twelve because it is, after all,
a twelve three playoff. Now she offers the disclaimer, and
I think it's a good thing that she does because
people could get really confused, and they might get confused anyway,
but she offers the disclaimer. As she ranks the top

(01:52):
twelve teams for the playoff, she says expected to be
reconfigured because remember the top four Power four conference champions
received buys anyway, So she could rank three SEC teams
in the top four, but only one is going to

(02:13):
get a buy out of that top four. The conference champion,
ever wins that conference championship game in Atlanta, will be
the one that draws that on December seventh. All right,
So nevertheless, this is how she's ranking them right now.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Number one. Yeah, it's Texas still number.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
One, and because as she says, Texas is a strong
case with a true road win at Michigan. You hear that,
those of you who are discounting that win at Michigan
and now a neutral site winning in Trival, Oklahoma, they're
also looking the part of an sec A national title contender.
But then she points out the do Oregon is coming

(02:50):
up fast. But what she says about Texas in her
category and her paragraph why they could be here in
the playoff, She says the long words disman rival Oklahoma
with no hint of an upset, adding what could be
a win against a second ranked opponent to their resume
in addition to Michigan. Even if neither are here's this

(03:11):
is an important thing people need to understand. Listen to
these words and I quote even if neither Michigan nor
Oklahoma are ranked on selection day, as long as both
opponents finish five hundred or better, the committee will still
consider them respectable wins, and a non conference road win

(03:32):
in ann Arbor is still better than what multiple other contenders.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Have in their non conference lineup.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Now let me also add this too, Oklahoma better win
this week against South Carolina. If the Sooners don't, I'm
here to tell you, Cameron Parker, the only definite win
I see on the Sooner's remaining schedule after this week
is Maine when they play them on Cupcake Week. Other
than that, they's nothing guaranteed with that finishing schedule they have.

(04:02):
And if that happens and he lose that game in
hot Coon, they're staring five and seven square in the face.
But if they beat South Carolina at the very least,
they'll get BAWL eligible with the win over May and
that would actually help Texas. But of course, as long
as Texas is remaining undefeated, it doesn't really matter that
much anyway. So it said, oh, you enter the game
ranked in the top twenty and both defensive and special

(04:25):
teams efficiency, and Texas was able to run the ball
against the Sooners and out gain them four hundred six
to two hundred and thirty seven toty yards, So that's
important to be there. And then she adds the paragraph
why they could be lower than where they're ranked, which
is number one. Oregon now has one of the best
wins in the country and a case for the top spot.
The committee would also respect the Ducks road win at

(04:46):
rival Oregon State, which is foreign too and the committee,
and the victory against Boise State is probably a win
against a ranked opponent. Some Committee members might think the
Ducks have better wins than Texas.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
And can make a case for it. And then she.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Has a third category call need to know it says
the selection committee considers injuries to keep players as part
of its protocol, so some of their conversation about Texas
would include the play off quarterback win viewers. He overcame
a sluggish start with a sack on the first playing
an interception on his first pass to help Texas win
after sitting out a month because of an oblique injury.
Texas coach t Sarkisian has made it clear there's no

(05:23):
quarterback controversy with backup arch Manning, and Saturday's game was
evidence of the committee the long words have two quarterbacks
who can win. So Texas is number one. She has
Oregon number two, Penn State third. Okay, there's two Big
ten teams there, so remember one of them would not
be in the top four. Oh Ohio State fourth. That's
three Big ten teams in the top four. Then she

(05:46):
has Georgia number five, so Texas is playing in Georgia.
It's the number one versus number five ranked team in
the country in the AP pole and also in her
college football playoff rankings. Alabama is six, Miami seven, Clemson eight,
BYU nine, and Boise State ten. But as she points out,

(06:06):
obviously there's going to be shuttling around on that deal,
especially in the top four as that goes there.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Now, in addition to that one thing that again.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
I read multiple articles and takes and watch videos of
different people who cover this beat of college football and
the playoff extensively. Scott Dortman is the guy who writes
for the Athletic and what he does is he does

(06:37):
what's called a contender check. And what he does with
that is he ranks the top one and two lost teams.
So Texas isn't in this thing obviously, the top one
and two lost teams. He has three categories. The first
one is called well positioned. Number one in the well
positioned is Ohio State. They're five and one. Number two

(07:00):
is Clemson at five and one, three is Georgia at
five and one. Fourth is Texas A and M at
five and one. Fifth is Tennessee at five and one.
Six is Alabama at five and one. Seventh is LSU
at five and one. Sensing a pattern here, there's all
sec there. Notre Dame is eighth at five and one,
So there's a top eight with well positioned. The second

(07:22):
category is called have something to prove. Number nine is
Missouri at five and one, Tennis Illinois at five and one,
eleven is SMU at five and one, twelve is Duke
at five and one, thirteen, Kansas State at five and one, fourteen,
Arizona State.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Five and one.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
He writes, no matter what happens the rest of the season,
the Sun Devils have put together a remarkable turnaround from
last year's three.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
And nine campaign. Remember how close Texas State was to
beating them.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Texas Tech is in that category at fifteen at five
and one, Nebraska is sixteen at five and one, EYRACU
seventeen at five on one. Now here's the third category.
It's called two loss teams with a faint heart beat.
Eighteen Ole, miss at five and two, nineteen, Iowa at
four and two, twenty Arkansas at four and two, twenty one,

(08:14):
Colorado at four and two, twenty two, Oklahoma at four
and two have the faint heartbeat. Oh and then he's
got a two loss code red, which is Wisconsin at
four in two at twenty three, Michigan at four and
two at twenty four, Utah at twenty five at four
and two, Boston College at four and TUO twenty six,

(08:35):
Cincinnati four and two at twenty seven, Rutgers at four
and two twenty eight, Vanderbilt four and two at twenty nine,
in Virginia four and two at thirty. He also adds
Louisville at four and two at thirty one, in Georgia
Tech at five and two at thirty two.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
I would put Oklahoma in the Code RED. I think
Vanderbilts better than Oklahoma. I'm more afraid that Oklahoma.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
Vanderbilt's got a better win. Texas has to play them
there in Nashville. Coming up a week from this weekend
min how things can change during the course of a
college football season. We'll be back to wrap Abour number
two on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
