Speaker 1 (00:00):
Speaking of a hit. This Jerry Jones conversation apparently has
turned out to be quite the topic of the conversation.
He brought it up at the start of the program,
cam about the local newscast playing Jerry's sounding off on
his radio hosts there on one oh five to three
the Fan, and you asked the question after Jerry said,

(00:24):
and the quote, this is not your job. Your job
isn't to let me go over all the reasons that
I did something that I'm sorry that I did it.
That's not your job. I'll get somebody ouse to answer
these questions. Well, then later, as you pointed out, he
said to Diana Rassini the Athletic, if I'm going to
be grilled, I don't need it to be by the
guys I'm paying. So it kind of all had us

(00:45):
quizzically thinking about all this kind of stuff. And I've
reasoned that maybe what he's talking about is them buying
the airtime. I want to fight through the fan, and
that was part of the deal. Mike Doosey is longtime
sports anchor in the Dallas Forward Benterplex on the Fox affiliate,
and last night, in the commentary on his show, he
said this quote. The fan hosts were asking those questions

(01:08):
in a much more courteous way than cowboy fans would
be asking if they ever had a chance to sit
down one on one with you, saying this to Jerry
and let you know what they really think about the
way you've put this roster together. Deucy went on to say, Now,
this is very similar to the things I said yesterday, Cam,
if you remember, Deucy went on to say, he has admired.

(01:28):
I didn't say admire, but he has admired the way
Jerry usually takes criticism in a good natured way. I
did say that yesterday, but that this was different.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
That's what I said.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
I got a different vibe out of him out about
that quote. This little display this morning, that was ugly.
That was a billionaire bully pod because he wasn't hearing
exactly what he wanted to hear. Jerry, don't blame the messengers.
Point the finger of blame at those who deserve it,
your players, your coaches, and yourself. That's where that reach.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Brother.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yeah, so said that about there. Now, whether Jerry really
pays any attention to it, probably not. But anyway, let's
hear from long worns head coach Steve Circasian Stark on
the SEC teleconference this morning with some comments. First of all,
his opening thoughts in this SEC teleconference conference call, It's

(02:21):
a great data.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Bill, obviously a great opportunity for us this week, getting
ready to play a marquee game Gains University at Georgia,
a program that we really feel like has set the
standard in college football here over the past you know, shoot,
almost a decade now, I mean, Coach Smart's done a
great job.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
We know it's gonna be a heck of a challenge.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Should be a great environment here at DKR and looking
forward to the opportunity.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Okay, all right. Then he was asked what allowed his
program to be so well prepared for this transition into
the SEC because we've been here two you know, Ssex
he's different. They're going to find out it's gonna be different.
Blah blah blah. And here they are rolling along right now,
not only sitting on top of the SEC, but on

(03:09):
top of the national polls right now.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
So it was asked what.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
It's allowed his program to be so well prepared for
this transition into the Southeastern Conference.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Well, you know, when we took the job, here, you know,
four years ago, really looked at hey, why are we
taking the job. And you don't come to Texas just
to be a head coach. You come to Texas to
compete for championships. And we felt like, okay, if we
want to try to win a national championship in the

(03:38):
old model somewhere there, you were going to have to
beat Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, maybe Notre Dame. Those
were kind of the four teams that were kind of
rotating the college Football Playoff, and so to do that was, Okay,
what type of team do we need to have to
make that happen? And we felt like we got to
get bigger up front at the line of scrim jump

(04:00):
both sides of the ball, and we need to get
faster on the perimeter, and that that's what it was
going to take to beat those teams in the playoff.
And then so when we got notified that we were
going to the SEC, that that formula for building the
team really didn't have to change at that point because

(04:20):
you know, we had already been building the team that
way to try to beat the best teams out of
the SEC. And so to make that happen, and we
felt like we got to get bigger up front at
the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,
and we need to get faster on the perimeter, and
that that's what it was going to take to beat
those teams in the playoff. And then so when we

(04:43):
got notified that we were going to the SEC, that
that formula for building the team really didn't have to
change at that point because we had already been building
the team that way to try to beat the best
teams out of the SEC. And so it just kind
of re affirmed what we're what we were doing needed.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
To be done.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
And so that's been the process, you know, along with
I think, you know, building our culture. You know, it's
one thing to have really talented players or big, big people,
but I think, you know, I've said this all along.
I think I think culture beats talent, and that was
something we had to hang.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Our hat on early while we were here.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
But I think culture and talent together is really dangerous,
and I think that that's that's kind of what we've
become as a program now now.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
At the time, sure that the word came down that
he was going that that Texas was going to go
into the Southeastern Conference. Georgia was sitting on top of
the college football world as the national champions. So Sark
was asked at that time was he trying to mirror
what his friend Kirby Smart had built and was doing

(05:48):
at Georgia as Sark was building his program.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
I don't know the ins and outs the inner workings
of of Georgia. I mean, clearly, you know, Kirby has
done a tremendous job. You know what what they've been
able to dude from a consistency standpoint, the number of wins,
the championship appearances in the SEC Championship, the national championship appearances,
the back to back national titles. You know that that

(06:13):
level of consistency doesn't happen by chance. You know, he's
recruited really good players, he does a heck of a
job coaching. He's had coaches come and go, He's you know,
he's brought in new coaches that have done a really
good job. And so you know, they're obviously ahead of
the curve of where we are from where they where
they started and where we are today. But again, I

(06:34):
think a lot of the stuff is, you know, Kirby
and I's backgrounds with Coach Saban, and you know, if
you you're at Alabama, whether it's for a short time
or a long time, there's a lot of lessons to
be learned. Not everybody's going to be Nick Saban, but
there's a lot of lessons to be learned, and there's
a there's some method to the madness of of how
he goes about his business. And I think we both

(06:56):
probably took some some pretty good notes of trying to
build a build a program and an organization that could
be sustainable and not just one year have a really
good year and then be down for a couple but
be sustainable to where you're competitive and your compete for
championships year in and year out.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Okay, and he has pointed us out. We mentioned it earlier,
he said at the news conference on Monday. Kirby Smart
said it in his news conference on Monday that the
two are good friends and that they get together as
part of a coach's retreat thing at the end of
air year, so they know each other. Of course, obviously
they've both been former assistants under Nick Saban, so they

(07:33):
are friends. So he was asked a captain obvious question
what makes Sark and Kirby Smart such good friends.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Well, we're both average golfers. I don't know. I honestly,
I really think it's more of a personality connection than
it is just you know, hey we like this or
like that. You know, we both played, you know, we
then we both got you know, weren't good enough to
kind of have real careers professionally, and we both started

(08:04):
coaching when we were young. And you know, we both
have sons at play and both work for coach Saban,
and so there's just kind of and then I think,
like you said, there's a personality trade that that makes sense.
You know, we're both highly competitive, but yet we like
to have fun. We both can joke, we can have
a good time, and and so again, I don't know

(08:26):
if it's like just specifically that hey, you know, we
both like you know, the specific color or something. We
just I just think we get along and that sometimes
is the best kind of friendship to have.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Okay, So we're gonna hear more from Sark coming up
the next segment. He's got a few more things to
uh to say about this this matchup, so we'll we'll
get to that coming up. And also remind you that
Long Worn Weekly with Coach Sark is coming up ninety
minutes from now the show taping, So if you wanted

(09:01):
to come out the Pluckers and a lot of people
ask me if they say, hey, what's the day of
the week that you do that, I'd like to come
out there and see, And it's Wednesday is when we
record the show and we do it from six to
seven pm at Pluckers. It's at the West Campus location.
It's at twenty two twenty two Rio Grand and there's
a parking I know it's a kind of a congested
area over there West Campus, but if you go up

(09:23):
Rio Grand, or come down twenty third and go up
or twenty first and then go up a Rio Grand
from there, there's a parking garage there that you can access.
Just pass Pluckers coming going north on the street. What's
the only way you can go. That's one way. It
would be on your left, So it's there. We record
the show from six to seven on Wednesdays. So we're

(09:46):
going to record the show tonight at six and then
it'll air tomorrow night at seven. Also, you can see
the televised version of it because it is it is
recorded for television by Vivo Productions and aired on KBVO
Channel fifty one, and it airs on Friday nights. I

(10:10):
believe at nine o'clock is when you would see the
televised version of that, But if you want to be
there for the taping, it's six o'clock this evening. We'll
continue here on sports Radio AM thirteen, Others Zone, and
the iHeartRadio app.
