Speaker 1 (00:00):
Craig Way and the producer Cameron Parker alongside. Glad to
have you with us as well as we bring you
the program up until five o'clock this afternoon. Coming up
in a few minutes, we'll hear more from Longgrn's head
football coach Steve Sarcasian from that final media availability of
the week, the Thursday media zoom that he conducts with local,
(00:21):
regional and national media. So that's coming up in a
few moments where I've have some more conversation about that.
As we mentioned baseball, it's getting underway. What a little
over an hour from now, I guess it is will
be Yankees and Guardians Game three. The series has shifted
to Cleveland in the ALCS and must win time for
(00:44):
the Guardians. If they don't, they falled behind three to nothing.
Yet it has only happened one time in Major League
Baseball history that a team came back from a three
to zero deficit to win a series.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
And we know what that was. That was twenty More
was twenty years ago.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Boston Red Sox down three games to none and looking
to be swept late in Game four when a stolen
base by an unheralded Red Sox player flipped the script,
turned the.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Tide, and they rallied back to win.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
That unheralded player was Dave Roberts, and won that game
went on when the next three won the ALCS over
the Yankees, and then ended the eighty six year curse
by winning the World Series that year in four straight
over the same Lois Cardinals. It's the same Dave Roberts
who's now the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who
(01:36):
last night took Game three of the NLCS of the
New York Mets eight to nothing.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
I saw that thing on the carl this one and.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Said, Mets second worst shutout loss in postseason history, eight
to nothing. The worst one happened three days prior to
nine to nothing in Game one. But Game four and
the Mets do have Canana on the mound to night.
The Dodgers try to cat with Yamamoto, and so we'll
see how that goes. That's Game four of that series
(02:06):
that's in New York tonight. Game five will be tomorrow
afternoon in New York, and then if there is a
Game six, and if there is a Game seven, both
of those games would be back in Los Angeles at
Dodger Stadium. All right, remember, yes, it was just yesterday.
I guess it was the thing when I told you, Cameron,
we were going over playoff projections, and I said, you know,
(02:30):
here's here's the playoff projections from ESPN add some, and
then the Athletic had some. And the guy who does
them for the Athletic when we were talking about his yesterday,
Scott Doctorman, and we went over his playoff projections. And
remember how I kind of joked a little bit and said, yeah, yeah, yeah,
we're not talking about bowl projects. It's less I got
(02:52):
bowl projections for you. But it folds in to the
whole playoff thing as well. So that's why it's that's
why it's pertinent. Okay, he did this with Stuart Mandel
and a couple of things to keep in mind about
these playoffs, because I've also been asked about the possibility
of where the long runs might play in the playoffs,
(03:13):
say in a quarterfinal. Well, here's some particulars to know
about all this. Of course, the Playoff Selection Committee ranks
the top twenty five teams in order, and the twelve
team playoff field will consist of the five highest ranked
conference champions and seven at large teams. The top four
(03:37):
conference champions earn a first round by now you've heard
me say this, you've heard say this that if you're
in one of those powerfour leagues, you're going to get
a buy few in the league. That's not official, but
is presumptive because the powerfour conferences are going to have
(03:58):
better resumes than they G five. The G five would
have to be unbeaten, and it'd have to be a
conference champion, it had kind of stumbled and bubbled along
and found a way despite losing maybe three or even
four games and won the conference championship. That would be
the only way you could upset that apple card. So
pretty much you can feel pretty safe in saying if
you are the champion of the ACC, the Big Ten,
(04:20):
the Big twelve, or the SEC, you're going to get
a buy in the first round. And then the fifth
highest ranked conference champion, which would be a G five
at that point, would make the playoff. Even if they
were say rated twenty first in the College Football Playoff rankings,
they would be slotted in at the number twelve spot.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
So then.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
The fifth champion and the seven at large teams would
compete on four campuses December twentieth and twenty. First, there's
one Friday game and then three on Saturday, and the
Seeds five through eight will host the Seeds nine through
twelve those are the ones on home sites. Then you
have four bowl games will host the quarterfinals, New Year's even,
(05:07):
the Fiesta and January first for the Peach, the Rose,
and the Sugar, while the Orange Bowl and the Cotton
Bowl would host the summi finals on January ninth and tenth, respectively,
and the championship gain January twentieth in Atlanta. Now, the
playoff is, as they point out, one component of the postseason.
The other system consists of thirty four bowls with locations
(05:29):
ranging from the Bahamas to Boise, Idaho. The Power Conferences
have deals with bowls for its non playoff teams, while
the Group of Five conferences have a mix of bowl
contracts and ESPN events marking making the matchups. So here's
what they've got right now. We mentioned these playoff projections
yesterday and right now. If it was just going on
(05:52):
it right now, Texas would be the one seed as
the SEC champion, Ohio State would be the two seed,
Miami would be the three seed. And Iowa State winning
the Big Twelve would be the four seed. According to
the Athletic, the five seed would be Oregon. Remember, Oregon
(06:15):
beat Ohio State, but they're expecting Ohio State maybe to
beat Oregon in a rematch in the Big Ten championship.
So remember we're talking about after the conference championship games.
So that's why they're projecting that Oregon would be the
five seed, Penn State would be the sixth, Georgia would
be the seven, Clemson would be the eight. So what
(06:36):
you would have would be first round playoff matchups in
State College Pennsylvania between the sixth seed Penn State and
the eleven seed they project LSU.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
That would be on December twentieth.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
They're saying on December twenty first in Clemson, South Carolina,
you'd have an eight to nine matchup of Clemson the
eight seed in Alabama the nine seed in Eugene, Oregon.
On December twenty first, a five versus twelve matchup Oregon
Boise State that would bring a rematch of their big high.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Scoring affair early this season.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
And also on December twenty first in Athens, seven seed
Georgia hosting the ten seed Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
That's where that is.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
So you'd have four winners come out of that, and
then you would get to what they are projecting would
be these matchups. On New Year's Eve, December thirty first,
in Glendale, Arizona, you'd have the four seed Iowa State
against the Oregon Boise State winner. In the Rose Bowl,
you would have the two seed Ohio State against the
(07:36):
Georgia Notre Dame winner. In Miami, you would have or
excuse me, yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
In what did I miss? Miami playing their quarterfinal.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Well, they've got Texas against the Clemson. Oh here it
is in Atlanta on January first in the Peach Bowl
Miami the three seedgainst the Penn State LSU winner, and
they have the Long Horns in New Orleans on January
first in the Sugar Bowl. Now I know some early
projections and magazines and stuff had Texas playing in the
(08:10):
Peach Bowl, and it was theorized the possibility of Texas
playing three times in five weeks in Atlanta SEC Championship,
a quarterfinal in the Peach Bowl, and if they advanced
all the way to the National Championship, then playing in
Atlanta where the site is for the National championship game.
But lately, not only these projections from the Athletic but
(08:33):
also ESPN, CBS, and a couple others. All point all
signs are pointing to New Orleans. If Texas wins out
and wins the SEC, that they would indeed wind up
in New Orleans playing the winner of Clemson in Alabama.
How about that for a quarterfinal Texas against either Clemson Alabama,
and then you would get to the semifinals. One of
(08:56):
those would be in Miami quarterfinal win against quarterfinal winner,
and the other one would be in Arlington in the
Cotton Bowl. The one in Miami be the Orange Bowl.
And according if its seeded out where the higher seeds
would win, you'd have the one seed against the four seed.
You'd have a Texas Iowa State semifinal in the Cotton Bowl,
(09:17):
and you'd have an Ohio State Miami semifinal in the
Orange Bowl. And then of course the winners advanced the
national championship in Atlanta on January twentieth. So that's where
it is where their projections are. Texas to win the SEC,
Ohio State to win the Big Ten, Miami to win
the ACC. Iowa stated the Big twelve earning first round
(09:38):
bys Boise State from the Mountain West, the fifth conference
champion seed a twelfth. The at large teams qualifying in
order are Oregon, Penn State, Georgia, Clemson, Alabama, Notre Dame
in LSU. That'd be pretty exciting stuff. I mean, it's
the kind of stuff we've been talking about for some time,
the possibility of these big time matchups in a playoff.
(10:00):
And I will tell you this, for my money, I'm
okay with the thing going to sixteen and eliminating the
buys starting next year.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
If they do that, I'd be okay with that as well.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
I've always been a more is more guide when it
came to the playoff, but this is a great improvement
over the four, which was in great improvement over the two,
which was an improvement over just the polls picking it.
It has gradually gotten to that point and now we're
going to get to a twelve team playoff coming up
a few weeks. The long run, certainly hope to be a.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Part of that.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
To do that, they need to stay on course. They
need to stay on track, which would mean beating a
really good Georgia team on Saturday night in Austin, we'll
hear more from head coach Steve Sarkeishan coming up on
