Speaker 1 (00:00):
I want to go over some NFL matchups, and I'll
get to that in a moment. But there was something else
I wanted to get to. We were talking about Troy
Aikman being able to working as an analyst for ESPN
feel free to lower the moom and criticize any team,
(00:23):
including his former team, the Dallas Cowboys. There was an
interesting story today on The Athletic from Richard Ditch, who
writes a lot of TV column stuff, and the headline is,
and it'll put an impression in your mind, the headline
is Tom Brady's juggling act as Raiders owner and TV
(00:46):
analyst feels unsustainable for Fox.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Now.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
He starts off by talking about Troy Aikman. Of all
he said, or Aikman said, I don't like to call
at all. Was a Monday Night game with the Bills
Jets of roughing the passer, call that sort of thing,
and after an on field explanation of the call, Russell Yurik,
a former NFL Vice President of Instant Replay and Administration,
(01:14):
now the rules analysts from Monday Night Football said Troy,
the reason why they called it in this situation is
because he does land with most or all of his
body weight. It looks like he does try to get
one hand of the side, but obviously the referee felt
that he didn't make enough of an attempt to brace it,
said Aikman, even more exasperated.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
I got it. I don't like it.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
So there were lots of flags. Aigman said it felt
like a preseason game, and he said watching Akeman on Monday,
he and play by play announcer Joe Buck have been
sensational this season. He didn't sugarcoat talking about the officials.
Aikman praised lead official Adrian Hill's crew when they correctly
identified penalties. He provided criticism when he thought they missed something.
(02:01):
He was unfiltered. He pulled no punches, and he kept
the implicit agreement a sports television analyst is supposed to
have with the audience, be faithful to what you see,
which brings us to Tom Brady. On Tuesday of this week,
NFL team owners voted unanimously to grant Brady part ownership
(02:24):
of the Las Vegas Raiders. Brady and Tom Wagner, the
co founder of Knighthead Capital Management, are believed to have
purchased approximately ten percent of the Raiders. If Brady was
merely a Hall of Famer to be extending his connection
with the NFL through ownership, it would be a story,
but not one with implications for those watching the product. Brady,
as the sports world knows, debuted in Septembers, Fox's number
(02:45):
one NFL analyst this season, alongside play by playvoice Kevin Burkhardt.
Fox has the broadcast rights to the Super Bowl this year,
which means Brady will call the league's most important game.
He has six games into a ten year, three one
hundred seventy five million dollars deal with Fox Corporation. How
can someone broadcast games while having a significant ownership stake
(03:08):
in a franchise. Well, the NFL places restrictions on Brady
before the season, including that he's not allowed access to
other teams facilities and practices, and cannot attend broadcast production meetings.
But here's the big one for this column's purposes. As
an owner, Brady is also not allowed to publicly criticize
officials or other teams, and could be fined or suspended
(03:31):
if the league feels he breaks that policy. Roger Goodell
was quoted as saying, quote, Tom's been abiding by the
issues that we've raised in the committee voluntarily since he
began broadcasting. So that's all been resolved. It's been followed
very clearly, and everyone seems to be satisfied with that.
The NFL confirmed the same Wednesday this week. There have
been no issues and Tom has been a wonderful edition
(03:52):
at NFL broadcasts at a league spokes person. So that's
the league perspective, says Richard Deatch, But what about viewers.
There's an implicit agreement between those who broadcast games and
the audience. We work for you, the viewer. Now, we
also live.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
In the real world.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
And there have long been conflicts of interest in sports
media jobs, no further than professional tennis, where coaches also
serve as on air analysts, but pre determined restrictions on
what you can say leave no work around. The league
has told a number one NFL analyst there is a
limit to what he can say as part of the
NFL's constitution and bylaws. Think about what would happen if
(04:29):
there's a blown call that costs someone the Super Bowl.
Maybe Brady would ignore the restrictions and just.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Go off on the officials. Maybe you pull some punches.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
The point is the restriction changes everything asked how Fox
Sports viewed the broadcasting restraints for Brady and how they
viewed Brady potentially being assigned Las Vegas games. Fox Sports
declined comment because it's important to note Brady getting approved
Tuesday does not change anything for Fox Sports. They've been
working under these guidelines since the start of the season,
(04:58):
and Fox Sports is pleased with Radies development works.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Next.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Assimon is Che's forty nine Ers this Sunday. So anyway,
it goes on and on about this kind of stuff,
let me just say this. I think there's the potential
maybe for something like that happening simply because he's the
number one analyst on the team working with Burkhart, and
(05:24):
he'll get to call Super Bowl, and he'll call playoff games,
He'll call.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
All the games.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
I don't think he's going to be on a Raiders
game this year that, first of all, the Raiders aren't
good enough to draw the lead game. I don't think.
Put it this way, he's not on the Raiders Rams
game this Sunday in Los Angeles.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
He's I don't think he'll be on that.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
But does it present the possibility of a compromising situation
or impropriety?
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Eh?
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Maybe, I think that's kind of a deep dive, which
Richard each does. He does a good job in his column.
I'm certainly not criticizing in the column. I'm just saying.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
You kind of have to go a.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Ways to get to perhaps get to that point to
see that.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Well, when the Raiders hire Belichick next season.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
That I've read that the other day, could we be
living in a world where Tom Brady hires Bill Belichick?
Speaker 2 (06:26):
And again, that's another thing.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
He owns ten percent, you know, Mark Davis is still
he's still the one majority.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Yeah, it's a.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Ten percent stake. What might affect his judgment on something? Eh,
maybe I doubt it, But again I think it's kind
of a mood point because the Raiders are not good.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
I don't think it's going to affect his judgment. Craig Boat,
What it does worry means that as an analyst and
as a broadcaster, we both know that a lot of
the prep work goes into watching film, talking with coaches
with players, understand ending what they're trying to do on
the field and in the game, and he has such
limited access now because of his stake in the team,
(07:09):
that I feel like it's gonna make him a worse
broadcaster and he you know, I don't He's been okay
this year.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
A lot of people have not liked him.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
But if you were ranking the analyst right now, he's
probably close to the bond than he is the top.
And I think for him to be able to grow,
not having this access is only going to hurt him.
And I'm really curious how long he'll stay as a broadcaster,
as a as a color analyst, right I would not
be surprised Craig in the future he ends up moving
(07:37):
out of the booth and ends up working on a
pregame show or kind of just does what Belichick's been
doing instead of being the color analyst on the broadcast.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
But we'll see, kind of hard to walk away from
thirty seven and a half million bucks a year. Yeah,
ten year deal at three hundred and seventy five million dollars.
But to your point, it's gonna be the NFL is
going to watch it closely. I think I think that's
for sure. They're gonna watch it very very closely. On this,
I think he's done okay, doesn't seem comfortable. I think
(08:09):
he's still trying to get there. And some analysts it
takes a little time. I don't think Troy Aikman was
great when he started. I think he was a little
stilted when he started, but he got better. Tony Romo,
in many folks Esmay's just the opposite started great now.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
I think Romo's in.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
Better this year. I think Brady coming in kind of.
I think he coasted in years two and three because
of how good he was in year one. And I
think Aikman's gotten so much better because of Romo coming
in and lighting it up.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
I think it's made all these broadcasters better.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Okay, all right, so we'll take a look at some NFL.
In fact, let's do.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
That right now. We'll bring the coach sark audio in it.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
All right, since so much since we mentioned that, I'm
just gonna start throwing games at you like I do
every week and get your thoughts on it. Let's start
with Tom Brady's Vegas Raiders. They play the Rams. The
Raiders are two and four. The Rams are one and
four as they play, and the Rams are a seven
point favorite, aren't they really?
Speaker 2 (09:08):
That's bright happen? How did that happen? Okay?
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Hey, is Cooper Cup gonna be back for this game.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
I don't think, so okay, and you know, uh, that's
that's the game, the possibility of I'm not I'm not hoping.
I'm not wishing for Joni Mitchell's concert to get canceled
at the Hollywood Bowl Sunday night when Linda and I
have tickets. That's right in La Sunday night. But if
it does this Sunday, yeah, yeah, So we got the
(09:38):
game Saturday and Sunday morning, we're falling out to LA.
When you come back red eye Oh wow, land at
eight o'clock Monday morning.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Yeah, it's gonna be difficult here.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
If you've got to come the Starks press conference on Monday.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Oh yeah, that's why I'm taking the Red Eye. I
can be there in time for the presser. So yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
But if for whatever reason, the concertgate because she's had
to cancel some shows due to health concern she's not canceled.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
So we're still playing on the show.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
And I told Linda, you know, so this should dedicate
show you my dedication to us in our marriage. If
the Dodgers have a game six, really hoping the Dodgers
wrap this thing up today, so.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
That's not even an issue.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Short and Rams are playing a home game, but we
have tickets for the concert. Joni Mitchell was an iconic legend.
I want to see her as well, So that's the
plan on anyway. Okay, Patriots Jaguars, well, first of all, Rams, Raiders.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
Snoozer? Okay, am I packing this game? I think Rams? Okay,
just because of the weapons.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
I agree with you. It's a snoozer. Yeah, okay, all right?
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Uh Patriots and Jaguars. Speaking of snoozers, a pair of
one in.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Fives London game, Yeah in the morning. This was one
that you maybe just want to sleep through.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Yeah, maybe don't even wake up for this team.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
Certainly will fun to see what Drake may looks like.
If the Jaguars lose this game to the one in
five New England Patriots, Doug Peterson will not be the
head coach in the week eight.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
That's the predicul most okay, here's one that intrigues me.
Seahawks at three and three at the Falcons.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
This should be fun.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
Seattle still has been banged up injury wise, you know,
Byron Murphy. He's been out the last couple of weeks.
You know, struggled against San Francisco, struggled. I think they
lost the Giants right somehow in Atlanta seems to be
uh kind of finding themselves offensively. Bijon had had a
great game last week against Carolina. Give me Atlanta, Okay,
we'll skip Titans at Bills, Yeah, thank you, thank you.
(11:39):
First game for Marik Cooper.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Yeah, Bengals at Browns.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Speaking of Marik Cooper, another one that.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
You know how and all these commercials now radio TV,
we're kind of we're getting Snoop Dog shoved down. I
like Snoop, you know, maybe it's a little bit too much.
Kind of the same thing with the Kelsey brothers. Why
are we still getting the Shawn Watson shoved down our throats?
Jimmy has them? What are we doing here? We gotta
stop this. Must win for Cincinnati.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Yeah, here's one of really like Texans at Packers.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Yeah, this would be a lot of fun. Two teams
with two explosive offenses. Still no Nico Collins for Houston.
But this is probably I think right there with Detroit
in Minnesota for well, actually, sorry, there's Kansas City. Man,
what a Sunday actually thinking about? This is one that
won't get as much recognition as Detroit, Minnesota in Kansas
City and San Francisco.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
This may be the game of the day.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Okay, Dolphins Colts. Dolphin's Tyler Huntley's third start of the year,
and the Colts got Anthony richardson back.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Yeah gonna, I'm gonna skip through this one.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Okay, all right, Well we'll move forward to that Lions
at Vikings four and one, Lions five and the Vikings
early window noon game.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
No Aiden Hutchinson of course for Detroit, So how does
their defense look without him?
Speaker 3 (12:57):
His his passing?
Speaker 4 (13:01):
What is it like rushing the passer rate on the
term I just butched it. But the twenty four percent
the highest mark for defensive ends since Michael Parsons of
last year in terms of putting pressure on the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
It's a big loss for Detroit.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
Meanwhile, Minnesota has one of the best defenses in the league.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
This will be fun.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
Line is my Minnesota minus one and a half? I
don't know which way they go with this one.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Okay, Eagles are three and two, Giants are.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Two in helping helping Giants win that one.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
Yeah, Panthers are one and five. Commanders are four and two.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
They lost last week. Could we see the Commanders be
five and two.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
Could I mean, there's a good chance, you know, Carolina,
but they do get Jonathan Brooks back.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
So do have a rooting interest in this one?
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Are more of a watching interest to see how does
Jonathan Brooks look in his first game back since of
course the ACL injury last year?
Speaker 1 (13:49):
All right, how about the headliner in the late window
five and oh Chiefs three and three, forty nine Ers
in Santa.
Speaker 4 (13:55):
Clara rematch of last year a super Bowl. But San
Francisco has been you know, beaten up with the Debelle
Samuel is questionable this week. Jordan Mason is questionable. Got
a feeling Kansas City improves a six to zero after
this week despite all the injuries that they seem to
be just rolling right now.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Sunday night game if you care. Jets Steelers Russell Wilson.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
It looks like it's going to be his first start
in the Pittsburgh Steeler uniform, Defonte Adams first game in
the Jets uniforms. So at least we have the Rogers
Defonte Adams connection to see how that looks like.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
Go the Jets here.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Then you've got Ravens Bucks, Chargers, Cardinals in the Monday
Night double.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
Hitter Baltimore, who I think is the best team in
the league right now against the Buccaneers team that is
foreign two.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
I think the record.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
Suggest they're a little bit better than they really are.
Like Baltimore and then Chargers Cardinals mean coach Harbaugh who
left the game because of a fib yeah, comes back,
Jesse Mintter we took over as acting head coach. Rogers
have one of the best defenses in the league, gotta
fill They gonna find a way to shut down Kaala
Murray and the Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Coming up, we'll hear from Logorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian
here on sports Radio AAM thirteen under the zone of
the iHeartRadio app.
