Speaker 1 (00:00):
Somebody said, I believe Texas has won five out of
six games against Georgia. I believe it's four out of five.
I could be wrong about that. I was thinking they were, well,
you know, I got it up.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
In the team notes here. We both probably have it up. Yeah,
you're right, four out of five.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Yeah yeah. I started saying, I got my broadcast heart
right here, you have four out of five they won.
Here's an interesting note they won. The first time they
played was nineteen fifty seven, Daryl k. Royle's first game
as head coach, and they played that at Grant Field
in Atlanta, which is the home of Georgia Tech. That's
(00:39):
where they played that game. That was coach Royal's first
game as the Lawgorns head coach in nineteen fifty seven.
They won that game there back in Austin in nineteen
fifty eight. This is the first time Georgia has been
to Austin since nineteen fifty eight, and the Logorns were
actually down eight six in that ball game and ended
up winning at thirteen eight in that one. Then, of course,
(01:00):
the one time Georgia did win, it's the biggest of
them all, was that Cotton Bowl in nineteen eighty three
January of eighty four one, the Long Rune would have
won the national championship. They won, They lost ten nine.
There was the Craig Curry fumble punt set it up
Georgia's winning touchdown. They won ten nine, and it set
the states for Miami to win the national championship by
(01:22):
beating Nebraska.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
It also played in the Orange Bowl in nineteen forty nine.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah, that's right, yes, and that one is notable for
the star of that game. His name was Tom Landry.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Tom Landry was played. He had come back from military
service and it had played at Texas but hadn't really
stood out. Of course, he was behind Bobby Lane as
an athlete. But Tom Landry, he was from Mission Texas,
had all kinds of skills in the secondary and was
a two way player. But he played quarterback and he
(01:55):
ran for I think one hundred and seven yards and
scored one or two touchdowns. Texas beat a favored Georgia
team forty one to twenty eight to win that one.
So they did that was the Orange Bowl. Texas won
that one then of course lost to them the Cotton
Bowl to the Bulldogs. And as I mentioned January of
eighty fourth the eighty three season, and then defeated Georgia
(02:17):
the last meeting in the Sugar Bowl. So they've played
them in the Cotton Bowl, the Orange Bowl, in the
Sugar Bowl, and now they're going to play him here.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
So next year when Texas goes to Georgia, it'll be
the first time they've actually played in between the hedges.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Then since nineteen fifty eight when coach Royle was coaching.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
So did they play at Bulldog Stadium?
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Oh no, no, no, no, no, you're right. In fifty seven
they played them in Atlanta. That's right. Fifty eight was
at home, so it will be the first time to
ever play in Athens. You're exactly right. What are the
keys to beating Georgia? Let's hear from Longhorn's head coach,
Teve Sarkisian. This is from our segment last night on
Long Worn Weekly out of Pluckers going over the Georgia Bulldogs.
And I'd done a broadcast chart preliminarily and then finding
(02:58):
out later that some guys are bay the ones have
it on chart, there's a couple who aren't there, and
then find out from visiting Wiscott Howard their play by
play voice of course Branson Robinson out they'd lost the
other Robinson earlier. He said, so we're down two running backs,
and I'm like, well, that sounds familiar being down two
running backs early on. But they still have weapons. They
still have Trevor Etn and of course they have Carson Beck.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, they do. This is a very dynamic offense.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
You know, when you have a veteran quarterback like Carson Beck,
he can make all the throws and so they really
tax you because this is a really good offensive line.
They've got a really good tight end and Oscar dept.
But then they have elite speed on the perimeter with
Arion Smith Dylan Bell, a kid who's really grown into
kind of his role on the team. But then they
(03:45):
believe in running the football too, and Dominic love it
in the slot.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
So they kind of tax you in a way similar
do we do.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
They can run it, they can hit you with the
short intermediate RPOs, but yet they can throw.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
It over your head.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
You know, I watched a clip today of Carson Beck
hitting Aaron Smith and the ball traveled sixty four yards
in there. So our dbs have got to be on
point in defending that deep ball, but you still have
to control the line of scrimmagee. They got a lot
of weapons.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Yeah, I started to say, it does make it a
challenge for your defensive accident when they can run the
ball as well they in or hit people over the top,
which is similar to what folks say about your guys.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Very similar systematically offensively, it'll look kind of similar.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
I mean, they do some things different than we do.
And you know, we were joking today.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
As a staff, it's like, I think it's every play
we motion, we're going to try to figure out does
anybody motion more than we do, or ship or do something.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
But this is a very good offensive football team.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
How about your thoughts on this Georgia defense. I know
they don't have Smile moundon this week, but Raylan Wilson's
played a lot there stepping in a linebacker, and they've
got other really good players.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah. I think the first thing about Georgia defense is
the schematically and the brain trust that they have in
that building.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Every day you talk about Kirby Smart and how regarded
he as a defensive coach.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
They have Will must Champ on staff, and they have
Glenn Schuman as their defensive coordinator probably be a head
coach next year. So that's a that's a pretty powerful
brain trust that they have. Then to go with that,
they've got some really good players, okay, and and any
really good defense, especially in the SEC, starts up front.
They've got a lot of veteran players on that defensive front.
(05:19):
Mikel Williamsy back and the Nazir Stackhouse is back. And
then from the back, I mean from the front, then
you get to the back and Malachi Starks is an
All American player at safety.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
He kind of runs things for him.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
So, uh, this is a heck of a challenge for
us as a football team, you know, like I said,
And then we haven't even talked about special teams. Right,
they've probably got it, you know, a draft pick, NFL punter.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Uh, so they've.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Got all the things that you would think of Georgia
football team would have. I mean, name the last time
they didn't finish number one or number two in recruiting
in the last decade. Right, and then they've they've won,
and they've been in I think six of seven SEC
championship games. They went to three consecutive National Championship games,
and so they're used to the They're used to the
stage or used to the environment. They've recruit players that
(06:00):
want to play on this stage, and so it's gonna
be a tech foot ball game. And if you can
get you can get to be one of the one
hundred and five thousand in there.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
I think you're gonna be in store for a great one.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
And somebody asked you today on the SEC teleconference if
you in building your program kind of modeled after what
Georgia was doing when you first came in, because Georgia
was on top of the football world at the time,
And you said, I wasn't so completely dialed into what
Georgia had, but obviously what they do is a good
model for college football.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Well, I think so.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
And I think if you just look at Kirby's history
in my history, you know, Kirby spent a lot of
years with Nick Saban, and he was you know, all
the way through their time at Alabama through that twenty
fifteen season. Naturally, I spent three of five years with
Nick Saban, And just looking at the roster, right, they've
got big humans up front, they've got elite speed on
the perimeter. They value quarterback play, they value running the football.
(06:50):
They value stopping the run, special teams, matters, they call
games aggressively, they'll fake punts, they'll do all those things,
and then they found success in doing it, and then.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
It kind of continues and continues and continue.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
So we're probably a few years behind where they were
at the just they've Kirby's been there longer than I've
been here. But I like our trajectory looking at where
they were as a program too. So that's why I say,
I think this is one of those games that's going
to be really fun for a fan to watch because
you're going to see a ton of NFL players playing
(07:22):
in an amazing stage at DKR, but also with schemes
that are high level schemes. You know, this is an
NFL driven offense and defense, just as we are, and
when you do it at that high of a level
with really talented players, it's a really cool thing to watch.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
