Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's hear a little more from Long Worn's head coach
Steve Sarkisian. This from the news conference from earlier today,
which you heard here on the zone, and he was
asked about the defense, and somebody asked, is is your
defense playing more consistent football than your offensive unit?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
I don't. I don't believe.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
So.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
I feel like, hey, human nature is human nature.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
And you know, I'm not gonna sit here and say
that our guys didn't read or see or hear people
talk about them.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
We all have TVs, we all have phones.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Right, we might not all subscribe to newspapers, but you
know we do read here and see.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Hey.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
I don't know, but but my point, my point to
that is I think it's human nature.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Yes we can read here and see those things.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
But I don't think our players ever got into a
space or a staff to where we thought we were
better than we were. We knew we had a heck
of a challenge coming our way Saturday night.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
I just wish we would have played better.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
And I don't think it was a byproduct of us,
you know, thinking we were better than we were. And
I don't think it was that we didn't play hard.
I thought We tried hard, we wanted to do right,
we wanted to play well. We just didn't play great.
And and there's some games you can get away with
not playing great. It's tough when you don't play great
and the other team plays pretty well, especially in a
(01:27):
half of football that it's tough to come back in
those types of games.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
And we gave it our best shot. It just wasn't
good enough.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
But I do think, you know, moving forward, our defense
has played really good football, and they've played football in
a way where it's, like I said, it's not about
one guy. I think we're playing good against the run,
we're playing good against the pass. We've played good third
down defense. You know, we we've been starting to create
some turnovers here now again. You know, we're always trying
(01:56):
to find ways to improve. And you know, we've been
great all year at putting out the fires, you know,
when they've gotten short fields and when turnovers have occurred.
The other night wasn't our best night at that, and
Georgia found a way to get in the end zone
three of those five trips into the red area. So
we're always trying to find a way to improve. This
week is going to pose new challenges right with Vanderbilt.
(02:17):
They're a different style of offenses. So we've got to
be really disciplined in our preparation, in our in our
approach to get that done. But I've been very proud
of those guys. They've they've played football at a high
level for us, and we're gonna need them to to
continue to do that because championship teams.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Aren't one dimensional.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
So we got to get offense back to executing the
way we know how to play. But in the meantime,
the defense has got to hold down the fort to
make sure that we can we can play complimentary football
starting this Saturday.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Okay, so you heard the laughing.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
The reason why there was laughing and chuckling was it
was Kirk Bowles from the now Houston Chronicle member formerly
for so many years with the Austin Americans Tasman. But
it was Kirk Bowles who asked Sark about did your
players read the press clippings or did they start thinking
it was going to be easy or whatever? So I
don't think so, you know, and he heard him say,
(03:07):
I think they you know, they know, they all hear
things and seeing is I don't know how many newspapers.
They and they got everybody laughing on that, all right.
He was also asked about his rotation with his defense
due to injuries, most notably in the secondary because of
Andrew mccooba's injury and he's listed as questionable, Jelani McDonald
(03:30):
coming off injury, and might Jelani be rotating there and
Jodday baron rolling and so Sark was explaining some of that.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Michael and Jelani are more than likely we are starters Saturday.
I think Jordan Johnson Rebel is a guy who has
gotten snaps for us and the guy who has earned
I think the opportunity to get more playing time. Naturally,
we have the versatility of Jodday that he's you know,
we've trained him at safety. He's playing some safety for
us this year, so again he's a bit of a
(03:58):
Swiss army knife army knife for us. You know, he's
played corner, he's played star, he's played diamebacker in our
dime package, he's played safety. And that's from just the
wealth experience that he has. So I think we'll be
fine from a rotational standpoint, but we definitely the sooner
we can get, you know, Andrew back will be helpful
for us.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
All right.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Now, a question about Diego Pavia, the Vanderbilt quarterback and
the not only the production but the spirit that he
provides the Commodore offense.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Well, I think, you know, he's kind of that definition
of grit. You know, grit is always something very hard
to define. Sometimes it's easier to see. And he's a
gritty player.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
He's tough.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
He finds a way to make plays, whether it's with
his legs, with his arm, with his legs and his arm.
You know, he runs tough, he runs hard, he makes
the throws when he needs to make him. And I
think that that he's infused that grit into their program,
you know.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
And that's to take another way from Coach Lee.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
I'm sure Clark Lee knew and identified that and saw
that in him, but they but they have it, and
I think it's a it's a real credit to him
because I really think that he's, like I said, he's
the kind of he's the straw that stirs the drink
for them.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
All right.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Uh. He was also asked if there's a blueprint now
for defending Texas based on what Georgia did to gain
plan against the long warns.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
You know they have.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
They have a couple of really experienced players on that defense.
You know, those two safeties have played a lot of
football for them. They're really good players. And so when
you talked about disguising, the more veteran, the more heady
player you are, you're a little bit more comfortable disguising
those things. They've got a wealth of experience at the
line of scrimmage with guys that have played a ton
(05:44):
of football to go along with that defense is really talented.
You know, there's there's a there's some NFL guys and
some first round picks on that defense too, and so
I think you tie it all together with really good
defensive coaches. Sometimes that's hard to replicate all of what
they did.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Now.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
I'm sure they can look at people can look at
some of the things that they did, but it's hard
to replicate some of it when maybe you just don't
have the bullets in the gun right that that that
Georgia has, and and that's again from the the experience
they have and also the talent level that they have.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Okay, uh Sark also asked uh asked in the presser
about Jayden Blue, Jadan Blue caught some passes out of
the backfield, did not carry the ball from scrimmage and
asked about you know what the situation was with Jaden
Blue's particular role with the offense.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Well, he's got to be a versatile player for us,
you know, And that's what he is. And we've known
this about Jaden. He's a heck of a receiver. Obviously
made a lot of plays for us, big touchdown catch
there in the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
But he's a very good runner too.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
I know that when he's really good in space, and
he's a really good route runner and catching the ball.
But we've got to we've got to make sure that
when he's in the game, people aren't just thinking pass
past pass, and so we've got to find ways to
get him his carries. Again, I thought Trey ran hard
and physical the other night as well. But we're gonna
need both those guys, you know, and neither of them
are one dimensional guys. We got to use them from
(07:11):
a versatility standpoint.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Next, he was asked if he thought is Quinn still hurting,
is he still injured and did that limit him on Saturday?
Speaker 3 (07:18):
No, I don't. I don't think it's impacted them at all.
I really think he's healthy and feels good about it. So,
you know, is he one hundred percent? I don't know
is anybody on our team one hundred percent you know
going into week eight?
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Probably not. You know, everybody's got something right now, all right.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
And then he was asked about this matchup meeting of
the minds with Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lee, formerly of
course another Dame assistant.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
You know, A ton of respect for Clark. You know,
he's a great defensive coach. He's a very good head coach.
I mean, he really is extremely knowledgeable about the game
and understanding the game, and I think at times, I
would say, think somewhat like an offensive coach, you know,
in the discipline and the execution in which they operate,
(08:04):
the foreshadowing of things that might come his way, and
then how he's going to defend those things. You know, Again,
I think that he's, you know, who he was at
Notre Dame is a little bit different than who he
is today defensively, not completely, but a little bit. And
so that, you know, shows that the evolution, right, we're
always trying to evolve as coaches, and so a ton
(08:25):
of respect for him. You know, again, I always look
forward to competing against really good coaches, you know, because
that that's our challenge too. And as much as players
love that opportunity compete against the best at their position,
when they go against a guy, coaches aren't much different.
And so I've got a ton of respect for Clark
the job he's doing there, but the job he's done
over his career.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
And finally asked about the bottle throwing incident and the
officiating involve and his take on all of that in retrospect.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
You know, my thing is, I again, I appreciate, you know,
Chairman l Type and President Hearts One CDC releasing the statement.
I know that we've got a passionate fan base, and
I think that show Saturday night, and you know, I
think we're all a little upset in that moment, and
you know, I just think that we've all got to
(09:12):
use a little better discretion in moments like that that
we don't want that to be the narrative that that's
what you know, DKR is all about. I really appreciate,
I'll say this, I really appreciate our support staff for
getting that thing cleaned up as quickly as they did.
So that we could get the game back moving in
the direction. Was too good of a football game for
that to be the focal point of it all. I
(09:34):
think in the end they got it right, you know.
And how they got to that point, I don't you
know exactly they conferred on that thing, but I think
they got the call right. And I think that's all
we want when we're playing the game as consistency as
coaches and then getting calls correct. And I think they
got the call correctly.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
All right, there, it is right. We'll be back to
wrap up today's edition of the program on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the Zone.
