Speaker 1 (00:00):
Speaking of wedge of long worn football, uh our man
Will Matthews sits down with long worn players every week.
We'll hear some collective conversations here. Here's one that he
hads with the long worns starting offensive love tackle Calvin Banks.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
One of the things that Jake Major said was being
able to show the young guys what it means to
bounce back. It seems like inside of the culture there's
room for bounce back and growth. Talk about that process
for you in the line.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Oh yeah, especially for one, you have to be able
to bounce back from from from games like this because
it's kind of like a point of of we need
to do better for the team because as old, you
feel like you're that cornerstone for the whole team, no
matter if it's for the defense or for the offense.
You kind of just got to go out there and
set the tone. And coming off of that loss is

(00:49):
kind of hard because like, all right, are we are
we doing anything wrong?

Speaker 4 (00:53):
Or what are we doing wrong? But at the point
of fact, is really just how you execute and.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
How you come out and and play, and how you
execute Sark's playing that he's putting in front of you,
and and from that point, Jake saying that we need
this is it's a good chance to show the young guy,
this is how you bounce back from a loss. This
is how you take a loss and then move forward
and keep your eyes focused on what's ahead of you
and now that's Vanderbilt.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
So just just focusing week week about week.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Day by day, just going by and just trying to
make sure we un instill that into the young guys
so when they when they get in this position as
an older guy, they can seal it until the guys
who's coming in as well.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
As you're talking talking about legacy and and and this
season specifically, we know it's not over. There's a lot,
there's a lot to play for. In fact, and I
think it's really off the table talk about what Sark
has been telling you guys about the rest of the season.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Yeah, really, he's just been telling us like if you
if you dwell on what's already happened, you're kind of
gonna shoot yourself in the foot. And in a sense,
like looking back on what's already happening Saturday with Saturday
and if you think about if you're thinking about Saturday
while you're playing Vanderbilt, how are you gonna be able
to focus on Vanderbilt's play is and focus on what
they're trying to throw at you? Kind of a sense

(02:04):
of just make sure we focus on what's happening right
now and today's Monday.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
Let's focus on Monday kind of thing like that.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
As you're looking into going into Vanderbilt. They've got a
really great team. They've had upsets against Bama, and they've
been at the doorstep of a couple of other ones
as well. How do you prepare for a team that
like this?

Speaker 3 (02:24):
I mean, just just just going out there every week,
just like we doing practice hard.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
Man.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
I feel like if you don't just don't try to coase,
like like say, don't make stuff up, don't make anything up.
Go do exactly what you do every week, the same
routine you have, and just go out there and be
prepared to play hard.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Until we just alluded to this for a second, everything's okay,
everything's on the table. Longhorns showed up hugely Saturday. Can
you talk to Longhorns and just tell them where are
you guys at and how are y'all feeling moving forward?

Speaker 4 (02:56):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (02:56):
We feel good moving forward, man, Like I'm I'm gonna
piggyback just from the beginning, Like we took our loss,
and we kind of the same situations last year we lost,
Like we know what it takes to come back from
that loss, and we're going to do our best to
try to keep pushing that forward for us and then
our other teammates as well. But I just want to
say I appreciate the fans for actually coming out and

(03:18):
even showing love.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
No matter what the score was.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
They were there the whole time, still cheering us so on,
no matter if we were down or if we were
having a good drive or anything like that. So I
just want to appreciate the fans for that and just
let them know that, man, we're still here.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
All right there it is.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
I'm Calvin Banks, and I think a lot of folks
got a chance to learn a little bit more about
Calvin with the ESPN's college game downtown. They did the
big feature on his mom, who was critically ill and
had actually been placed in hospice care, and then they
found out that it was her body reacting to her
diabetics medications, and once they were able to correct all

(03:54):
of that, then she's recovered and has been back in
the football games again. So it was pretty inspiring story
and great for great guy like Calvin. And I understand. Listen,
trust me on this. I understand if you are a
fan of a team and the team does not perform
to what you hope I'm not even getting into the expectation.

(04:15):
I'm just saying, how you hope that they would. The
disappointment frustration completely understandable. And the guys understand that. The
coaches understand that because they understand they're in that same category.
Nobody has higher expectations for wanting to perform well than
they do, but they understand the fans thing. But these

(04:38):
are guys that going out there giving it everything they
can in week after week. Kelvin Banks has done an
outstanding job and he didn't even really get graded that
poorly by those who do the grading of such things.
But as Sark was pointing out, it took a lot
of Monday morning quarterbacks calling out certain players said well
they didn't do this and they didn't do that, and

(05:00):
that it had become you know, experts in the field
a little bit. And I don't know that I've never
felt that I was such an expert on football I
could grade an offensive lineman's performance. You can tell if
somebody has a really difficult time, for sure. But I
just try to keep in mind that I know these
guys are grinded during the week. I see it with
my own eyes, how hard to working in practice and

(05:22):
trying to get ready for a given game. So it's
tough for them. If you think it's tough for you,
you know understand it's definitely tough for them as well.
All Right, we'll be back to wrap up Hour number
two here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under The Zone.
