Speaker 1 (00:00):
Texas women's basketball welcome home tip off dinner tonight on
the campus. So from the category of singing for my supper,
I will you know MC the events tonight on campus,
looking forward that looking forward to the start of the
women's basketball season, preseason number four in the country, and
(00:20):
they also have a preseason All American, none other than
Madison Booker, who was named to the AP preseason All
American All America list today, along with such names as
Juju Watkins and Page Beckers.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I mean, big time names.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
So, Watkins and Beckers were unanimous choices by a thirty
member national media panel that selects the AP Top twenty
five each week. Third appearance on the team for Beckers,
also a preseason choice in or sophomore year last year.
So the other three, actually, yeah, the other three Hannah
Hidalgo of Notre Dame, Keeky Ory Often of USC.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Who transferred from Stanford, right.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Yeah, yeah, she was a heck of a player in Stanford,
and Madison Booker. Nice, that's your that's your number. That
that's your It's funny. The USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb sad,
it's unbelievable. Those players exceled as freshmen and their teams won.
They did it in multiple ways. It's really exciting for
the game and a part of it because we know
(01:30):
obviously Booker really became such a major factor once Rory
Harmon went down with the ACL injury and she had
to go to a starting point guard thing and average
sixteen to a half points, five rebounds, five assists. So
you know that's that's where that was. And now they're
both back, so that'll be that'll be cool.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Was Roy Harmon? Was she preseason in All America? Yep?
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Last year, sure was pretty crazy preseason Big twelve Player
of the Year or two. And she was to play
yeah last week last week she's back and then new faces.
This is gonna be a really good team, looking forward
to it. They got a real interesting schedule because Vic
Shaeffer had a hard time getting non conference opponents on
the schedule. Uh, very few schools actually wanted to come
(02:19):
to Austin and play. He had to do home and
homes with home and home situations with James Madison and
Richmond just to get him on the schedule. So and
both of those are road games this year, and they've
got the acc SEC Challenge game at Notre Dame. They
have to go to to Paul and play to Paul.
So it's it's it's gonna be it's gonna be quite
(02:39):
a challenge.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Tough, tough schedule.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Yeah, but this is good basketball team, so we'll see
how they do through it.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
It's gonna make him better for March, I think.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
So all right, Long Words are trying to be better
for November coming up. Michael taff is always one of
the real interesting guys to visit.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
With the young man from Westlake.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
He gave us the phrase, was it comparison.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Is a thief a thief of joy? That I love
that and but a lot more.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
And he sat down with our Will Matthews to discuss
things going on with this Long Word football team and
him personally.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
We've all been there. Loss has happened. It is what
it is, and we know that this team is different.
So what's the difference now you lost one?
Speaker 2 (03:23):
What's up?
Speaker 4 (03:25):
I think we just understand the weight of this conference, right,
And you can preach about it, you can talk about it,
you can understand it, you can give it its respect
that it deserves. But until you're actually playing, until you
actually see what's going on, and how physical and talented
(03:45):
this conference is, you never really know, and so you know,
it was a good learning experience for us, and we
fought our tails off too, And so I'm super proud
of the guys and I'm ready to just he was next.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
When you're looking back at that film, what did you
learn about your defense?
Speaker 2 (04:05):
And what did you learn about yourself?
Speaker 4 (04:08):
We fought, We fought super hard until the last snap.
We didn't we didn't scoreboard watch. We just knew the situation.
We knew, you know, when it was four minute offense,
which means they want to stay in bounce so they
can run the clock. And how we were going to
treat that, how they were going to treat their offense,
and and we did everything we could to try to
(04:30):
keep them out of the paint. They got in the
paint a couple of times, and you know, that's not
up to our standard, but it showed our groom, our fought.
We I mean, we held them i think three four
or five plays on the one yard line, and that's
hard to do against a team like Georgia who's got
guys up front that are ready to be physical down there.
(04:51):
So it showed just the grit and the love that
we had.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
For one another.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
As we've seen you win one, everybody thinks you're the
greatest thing in the world.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
You lose, wonder is like, what's going on here? But
but help us level set?
Speaker 3 (05:03):
What what what is it looking like moving forward for
the Texas lam Harness.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Yeah, I just I actually was thinking about this when
I came up here because when I when I hop
out of my car the last six weeks, you know,
I get a lot of smiles and a.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Good job this morning. So I almost wanted.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
To tell some people that weren't giving me the time
of daily. Hey, like let's go, We're still good. We're here,
we got everything in front of us, and that's the
message that I'm bringing into the locker room.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Was like, guys, we're good.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
I mean, the amount of smiles that was going around
in the forty acres when we were the number one
team in the nation based off ranks was a lot
different now that we have technically one loss, and so
we still got the same same energy, We still got
the same smiles because we know what we're capable of,
and we know that one one game, one day, one
(05:53):
play is not gonna kind of determine what we're going
to do this season.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
So in finishing up here, what's the message to the
world to long Coordination? I mean, everybody to the sec
about about Texas.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Are you guys okay? I mean tell us what do
you want to say? Yeah, we're good long our nation.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
Just keep keep showing up, keep doing what y'all did
Saturday night, because that was an environment that I'll never forget.
You know, I don't I don't encourage water bottle throwing,
but what I will say is I I do appreciate
the you know, the effort that y'all gave to change
the Yeah, that passion that y'all did to change the momentum.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Of that game, and really really appreciate it. Just keep coming.
Trust us that.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
We're gonna work really hard. We're gonna be working really,
really hard. Y'all don't have to doubt that. And we're
not gonna lose our swagger and our confidence that we have,
and it's all gonna work out. You know, good things
happen to people that work really hard. In our patient
and we're gonna be patient. We're gonna be a hard
working bunch there.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
It is, Uh, it is.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Michael chaff who stopped just short of saying, as I
took a sip out of the bottle of Dasani water.
Dasani the official water bottle chucked by students KR the
other day because that.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Was that was the brand. Hey, I'm glad our students
were hydrating, you know, they did. They out there there,
some were camping out from like Thursdays. So I'm glad
they were drinking water.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Yeah, no doubt about it. Can't do that, no water bottle,
no throwing stuff onto the field. Just cheer with all
your might. All right, We'll be back to wrap up
today's edition of the program here on sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
