Speaker 1 (00:00):
Craig Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. Glad to have
(00:02):
you with us.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Bill Sheening was on with his first hour to talk
about the Spur season opener tonight in Dallas against the Mavericks.
And that's a TNT telecast tonight, and we'll talk some
more NBA a little bit later on some NFL to
get to. There is a game tonight Vikings Rams as well,
and we're going to hear from Long Wort's head coach
(00:24):
Steve Sarkisian coming up in a few minutes. One thing
I did want to do, it was made official today.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
The announcement was.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Brand new elected inductees the class of twenty twenty five
for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco, and
they have a brand new class of eight going in
and these this is the brand new the brand new class.
As I serve as a nominating committee member and we
(00:59):
put and we have lots of different names submitted to us,
and then the committee, which is about twenty of us,
vet through all the names and then submit a ballot
that has a lot of names on it, and then
from that it goes out to all the people who
vote all across the States and they come.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Up with the win with the winners on that, So
here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Newest inductees includes a pro soccer player, a WNBA star,
a longtime college athletic administrator, three NFL players, and a
Negro League in Baseball Hall of Fame.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Person as well.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
The class of twenty twenty five selected by ballot through
a statewide selection committee. The votes from the Texas Sports
Hall of Fame members and Ductees, board members, and selection
committee were tabulated by simply voting. So here's your class
in alphabetic order. The late Cedric Benson will go in.
How about Todd Dodge. Now that's rare for high school
(02:01):
coaches and athletes to be in the Texas Sports Hall
of Fame. In the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame,
he's already in that. He's also in the Hall of Honor,
but he's in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame now,
Todd Dodges Britney Griner.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Is going into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Add to Taul Jones, former Cowboys great defensive end, Biz
Mackie who was a great catcher in the Negro leagues.
Carla Overback, the US women's national soccer team player for
a long time. Chris Plonski, our good friend and of
course chief of staff at the University of Texas, longtime
(02:39):
athletic administrator, and another one of those women's athletics pioneers
is In and Richby. Yeah, CP is In and Richmond
Webb who played obviously for the Aggies and in years
with the Miami Dolphins as well. So the banquet will
take place on Saturday, February fifteenth, next February fifteenth, and
tickets are on sale now folks want to go for that,
(03:01):
it's in wake up if they want to go. So
congratulations to the class of twenty twenty five. And as
always there's there seems to be a University of Texas
flavor to it as well, and that of course includes
the late great Cedric Benson. Also, as I mentioned, Todd
(03:22):
Dodge going in former Texas a long run quarterback and
of course great high school coach and now doing quite
well at Lovejoyce turned it around after an oh and
to start and won four in a row afterwards. And
Chris Plonski, so the three with University of Texas ties
going into the hall as well. So that's that's a
(03:43):
pretty cool deal, all right, So we talked some NBA
in the in the first hour of the program of
the games that were played last night for that, and
there are more games tonight, including the Mavericks and.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
The Spurs playing in Dallas.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
And then in terms of other things, this was something
we had not to Did you see what.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Happened to John D. Murray?
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, opening night, unbelievable. Broke his hand in the winner
of the Bulls. He's out indefinitely. He had fourteen points,
ten assists, eight rebounds in his debut for the Pelicans.
Of course, they picked him up in that offseason trade
with Atlanta, and he appeared to either sustain or aggravate
(04:37):
the injury. Just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter,
New Orleans was up twelve. He tried a three pointer,
was fouled by Zach Levine. On the way down. He
tumbled over and came up holding his left hand. He
was able to go to the line. He made two
or three on the free throw line, but then with
sub doubts Repelicans guard CJ. Mccllinson. But hopefully he's not
out too long. But he's out. So that's that's in
(05:00):
New Orleans. Is one of those teams you should keep
an eye on this year.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Yeah, and there's any good side from it, it's that
it's his left hand and he is a right handed shooter.
But yeah, interesting New Orleans team. I mean they went
in the summer trying to figure out a way to
move brandon Ingram and they did not. So that of
course can maybe fractual locker room. It can you know,
damage the season, or it can you know, be a
catalyst for biither have a really good season. But they're
(05:27):
a team where you know, they've haven't had as much
postseason success as I think the front office would have
liked and even us NBA fans would have liked with CJ.
McCollum and Zion Williamson, and you know, they've made some
great draft moves and signs. You know, Trey Murphy I
think is a great player. I love Herb Jones. So
a team this year that I think, you know, if
(05:47):
we get to the trade deadline and they're in that
play in range or you know, still not top six,
they could be a team that decides, you know what,
it has not worked with this core group, Let's just
try and rebuild, maybe move on Sion get a massive
picks package. You know there's some teams out there with
a lot of draft picks, including my OKC Thunder and
Zion would fit that bill perhaps, so uh.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
A real fun team.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
You know, they're one of the rosters where every year
I kind of I kind of want them to be good.
I like Willie Green, their head coach, former basketball player.
But uh, you know, it sucks to have a injury
like this on an opening day.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
But you know, the timetable is up in the air.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
But at least it's his left hand and on his
shooting hand.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
One other NBA note before we get to the break,
and then we're gonna hear from sard You shaid you
you haven't. You haven't gone in yet on the NBA
A league pass package.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Uh haven't.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
But but you you watched the Suns last night right
in the Sun's Clippers game. Did they show highlights on
that telecast of the Warriors Trailblazers game?
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Did not? Okay, did you see what Steve Kerr did
last night? I did not. Steve Kerr has looked at.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
As being kind of an innovative kind of guy, right, sure,
this is a different kind of definition of innovative. He
used a twelve man rotation game with Portland twelve guys.
He played twelve guys, and throughout training camp he repeatedly
(07:21):
said that there were thirteen players he thought deserved rotational minutes,
and he stressed some difficult decisions he'd have to.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Make with his rotation.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
He started Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Minga, Draymond Green,
and Trey Jackson. Davis Okay, he says he'd like that
to be a starting five. Budd He healed, was first
off the bench, follow A, Kevon Looney and Brandon Putzemski,
and then he went after that to Gary Payton the
(07:54):
second and Kyle Anderson, he said. Wiggans said, this is
the deepest team I've ever been on, and Curry said,
it's the identity of this team right now.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
We're going to rely on our death.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
I don't recall seeing too many NBA teams go double
digit in their regular roster rotation on the floor.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
And fourteen played total.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Lenny Walters when Lindy Waters rather tho Oklahoma State Guarden
former and then GUIs Santos also playing and insane them
out and I think Golden State is going to be
tinkering with their lineup for most of the season, Craig,
because I'm still not sure. This might just be end
up being a playing team as well, unless Wiggins or
Kaminga takes a massive step. But Buddy Hilled at a
(08:36):
good game twenty two points, five to seven from beyond
the three point line, and Andrew Wiggins with twenty points.
I did see that Steph Curry started zero for five
last night. Think it was interesting you finished four to ten,
seventeen points. I think the key for Golden State this
year is just try and keep Steph healthy and also
don't exhaust him because it felt like towards the end
(08:58):
of last season Craig, he was just running out of
out of gas. But he played phenomenal. Now, of course
he didn't play in the playoffs, but he played phenomenal
in the Olympics. So right that Steph Curry can can
come out towards you know, the second half of the
season into the playoffs, Golden State could be fun. But
Steep Kris a lot to figure out.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Obviously, they won by thirty five points, and he said,
this is as deep of a team as I've ever coached,
and we've got to lean into that. I've never played
twelve before, but we're gonna do it. I was thinking, well,
maybe I'll just play ten. We'll have to tell two
of these guys that are gonna sit, but I just
couldn't justify that.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
We'll see how that works.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
I wonder if that's going to be like a basketball
version of like what the Dodgers are doing with bullpen games,
going with pitcher after pitcher for an inning or an
inning and a third and.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
That sort of stuff. Be interesting to see, all right.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Up next, we'll hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian
will continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zon
