Speaker 1 (00:00):
Texas Tuesday because we talked football in the lone Star
State on Tuesdays, and that includes Greg Tepper, managing editor
of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, who joins us in
the three o'clock hour to talk college football, and this
final weekend of regular season play in high school football,
it has plumbag.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Do you have a game Friday night? By the way,
are you calling a game Friday? We have Texas basketball
on Friday night? What am I thinking?

Speaker 1 (00:24):
I know I didn't have a football game. I know
I wasn't going to be in Dallas. I know I
wasn't going to be in Dallas to do high school
Scoreboard live this Friday because of the long WRNS home
opener Friday night. He gets used to Christ, I just
blanked on you for a minute there. So anyway, it's
a very important final weekend of the regular season in
the high school football in Texas, but also a big

(00:46):
weekend in college football.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
We know that.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
So there's plenty to discuss with regard to that, and
we'll do that on this Texas Tuesday. But like I said,
also we would like to refer to it as a
Texan Tuesday because the producer Cameron Parker will provide return
cuts today involving Texas based artist. There might be different ones,

(01:11):
but the list always, always, always includes in the four
o'clock hour the King George Strait, in the three o'clock hour,
the iconic Willie Neilson, and in the two o'clock hour
the immortal Stevie ray Vaughan, with whom you just returned
for the cut.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Yeah, him and his brother Jimmy Hard to be off
their what was that album called Family Style?

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Yeah, yeah, I believe Yeah. So anyway, so that's so,
that's where that is. So football on a Tuesday, obviously
here going forward is going to mean updated the playoff rankings.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
It happens at six o'clock on Tuesday nights. You know.
It happened some.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Last year Cam when we had a basketball game, either
a men's game or a women's game to broadcast. It'll
happen again next Tuesday when Texas when the Texas men
hosts Chicago State.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
But it'll be before tip off anyway, it'll come down
before that. We know this.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
The longgrange will be. I say, we know this. I
say I'm not on the committee. I could be wrong,
but I started to say, we know that Texas will
be in the top ten, probably or possibly in the
top five. I know they've ascended to number five, back

(02:39):
to the number five spot in both the AP and
the coaches polls after Penn State's lost to Ohio State.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
So could happen when their first rankings? Will it be
the top four? Will be the top four from the
group before or the Power four conferences? Or are they
just going to be They're going to rank their top
twenty five.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
The way that I understand this, and I'm here to
say that I will happily walk in tomorrow and say no,
I'm wrong about that. But the way I understand it,
they're just ranking the top twenty five right now.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
So and but that's kind of what.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Richard Clark, the executive director of the College Football Playoff,
That's kind of what he said when there was the webinar.
When the webinar happened, he said that when we had
him on, we didn't get that far into the discussion,

(03:37):
but I'm pretty sure that he said that they're just
all the committee is charged with doing right now is
ranking the top twenty five teams like they've been doing
for the past decade, and they'll start at number twenty
five and they'll roll down and I would say somewhere
in that top twenty five in the lower part.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
There's a decent chance.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
I'm not saying it's a lot by any stretch, but
there's a decent chance that Army can be in there,
and they would be a G five team, a group
of five since then the American and then continuing upward
somewhere probably in the.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Top twelve right now.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Probably again not a lock, but probably Boise State is
going to be in there, and that would be.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Of course SMU is in the ACC though, so they're
in a they're in a Power four. But by the way,
that's an incredibly common mistake that many people are making
these days that are just thinking.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
About SMU being in the America.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Because it's their first year in the newly reinvented Atlantic
Coast Conference that includes the likes of Callen Stanford in it,
SMU has a clear path to get to the a
SEC Championship game.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Now, they really do. If you think about it, they.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
You know, they that that was a gigantic win that
the Mustangs had on Saturday night over a previously unbeaten
pit team. So the you know, the list of unbeaten
teams continues to shrivel and SMU.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
They have a favorable schedule coming up. Craig, the Boston
College is one in three. They don't have any top
twenty five teams, and that fact, I mean, Virginia will
be their toughest game because they play cows zero to
four in the conference. Virginia's two and three, so they're
on an inside track to make the ACC Championship in Miami.
They they they play Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Syracuse.

(05:44):
Now at Syracuse might be a little bit tougher than
anything on on SMU's schedule, but I mean, it looks
like we're headed towards Miami SMU in the NCC toutle game,
and it doesn't make any sense.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
None of them, none of them right now have the
opponents for SMU have a winning record. None have a
winning record right now. They have five hundred records of
Boston College is four and four, Virginia's four and four in.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Kallas four and four.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
That's what I meant about a clear path to the
a SEC Championship game for SMU once they got over
the big hurdle of Pitt and they survived that overtime
game at Duke, which quite frankly, they very conceivably could
have lost. But they have a big road win at
Louisville that that matters a lot. They just pummeled Florida

(06:31):
State like everybody else's is doing these days now, and
their only loss was to an undefeated BYU team and
that was by three points. So they've got a real
shot to be in the a SEC championship game against Miami.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
That's so you're right.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
Where it's going to go from here is going to
be interesting to see, and we start to get an
indication of that tonight with the first rankings. Hither Dinners,
who follows it for ESPN, was posting some questions and
one of them was which is the best one loss team?

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Who do you think is the best one loss team
right now?

Speaker 3 (07:13):
I would just say Georgia because I saw them firsthand.
But Carson Beck, he's played so bad, either them or
Ohio State, I guess.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah, yeah, I know Texas fans.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Sorry, I guess I'm not biased enough to put them
at best one, but I want to see them close
out the final month little bit stronger. But I would
say probably Georgia, Ohio State, Texas.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
The top three.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Yeah, there's a good chance that she also raises the question,
is two loss Alabama a playoff team?

Speaker 2 (07:45):
And if so, how high are the Crimson Tide?

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Boy, the collegeball media just cannot quit Alabama. They love,
they are not giving up on.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Well, a lot of that well and a lot of
a lot of.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
That is track runner.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
Of course, they're they're believe that they have a track
record that Texas, A and M. You know it didn't
have before they lost a second So now they have
two losses in Clemson with two loss so they're thinking
a two loss Alabama. A lot of the people are
saying they're better than both A.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
And M and Clemson if they lose this week, Craig,
I bet you a million dollars that before the final
rankings they'll be somewhere either on the first take or
fine bomb Ken three loss Alabama still contend they're like
the Los Angeles lakers of college football.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Rate.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Yeah, or some used to ascribe that to the Cowboys.
I think they're finally off the Cowboys. I would agree
hopefully that they're a big trade today. Yeah, we'll get
to that coming up in some NFL think. Okay, so,
and then her third question is how high is Boise
State ranked?

Speaker 2 (08:49):
And this is the question we brought up.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
You know, they said this could be one of the
most underrated storylines of the playoff because two very diary
different scenarios could happen. Boise State could be ranked outside
of the committee's top twelve on selection day and then
knock out the twelfth ranked team to make room for
the fifth highest ranked conference champion. Or and this is
an important consideration, Boise State could be the fourth highest

(09:18):
ranked conference champion and earn a first round by at
the expense of the ACC or the Big Twelve champion.
Tuesday's rankings will show how firmly Boise State is leading
the Group of five race and how its rankings could
impact other contenders.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
I completely agree with.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
That, especially if Miami loses in the ACC title game.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
Or BYU, they're the only remaining unbeing in the Big twelve.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Iowa State got knocked out, You actually makes more sense.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Yeah, I mean, if keep an eye on the Holy
War this weekend. Utah has been down, but BYU plays
at Utah and that would be the ACC the Big
twelve nightmare to have them lose before the conference championship.
You know, they need an unbeaten conference champion to lock

(10:09):
themselves into a top four spot.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
I really do think that.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
And if they don't, Boise State could be the number
four and then you could see a BYU have to
you know, slot it in in the top twelve, but
not getting a first round by could happen. Her other question,
does Indiana really have a chance of the playoffs. Most
seem to be downplaying that. Yeah, they don't, you know it,

(10:36):
don't e much it. But I'm here to tell you
we find out in eleven days Indiana is gonna win
this week. So eleven days from now they go to Columbus.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Yeah, and they lose that game, it's gonna be Ohio
State Oregon most likely in the in the Big Ten championships.
So Indiana at eleven and one. And what if it's
like a you know, a three or five point loss
to Ohio State, Well about eleven in one, Indiana, here's
the problem. You're gonna put in four loss Alabama over them.
Here's the problem. Not four loss in no way, I
don't even think three. But here's the problem. Strength to

(11:12):
schedule for Indiana one three. Their best win is over Nebraska.
You know, that's why a lot of the people who
don't like the log Ones who are forecasting against them,
saying Texas better not lose again because that strength to
schedule isn't going to help them even in the SEC.
You know, that kind of thing went with folks who
are taking a close look at that.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
So there's there.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
So anyway, her projected bracket right now would be on
a projected top twelve from the playoff committee number one seed,
Oregon number two, Georgia number three, Miami number four BYU
and then the first round matchup she has Alabama in
the field at number twelve, playing at number five Ohio State,

(12:00):
and then the number nine the nine versus eight matchup
is Boise State as a nine seed. I could see
that playing Tennessee in eight seed. She does have Indiana
in the field as the eleven seed playing in Austin
against the log Horns.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Roger Wallace's head might explode. That's his Ama monitor Indiana.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
And Jimmie Rosenthal, the Texas woman.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
That's right, he worked there and it was there. Yeah.
And then the other.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
Matchup would be in the first round would be Notre Dame,
the number ten seed at Penn State the number seven seed,
last two in Indiana and Alabama. The Alabama thing is
going to take care of itself this week one.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Way or another.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
It's an elimination game.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
It is against LSU. They've got to win to have
it so.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
Fun Bomb said, it's the biggest college football game of
the season.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
Okay, SMU is in the first four out along with
Texas A and m LSU and Old Miss, and then
the next four out Iowa State, Colorado, Clemson, and Washington State.
That's the way Heather dinnis season anyway. But there's other
measurables we'll take a look at as well. All Right,
up next Inconceivable on a Tuesday afternoon here on sports
