Speaker 1 (00:00):
Last Night Log. Warreon men's basketball team opened the season
in Las Vegas. They fell to Ohio State eighty seventy two.
Long Wearn struggle to shoot the ball well enough and
to stop Ohio State when they were knocking down ten
three pointers in the first half. They wound up a
fourteen for the ball game, but there were several reasons. Afterwards,
it visited with Long Worn's head coach Rodney Terry to

(00:22):
talk about the defeat. I know, forty minutes is a
lot of basketball, but the way that game started for
the first five minutes, when they just could not miss
from three point range, really kind of made it difficult,
didn't They.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
We shoot a defense.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
They're older guards.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
If we knew, you know, getting Parish, you know, meet
you and those guys, they're real shooters, you know. And Thoughton,
you know, we played the way we thought he'd played
in terms of being an older guard and one of
the picking one of the better pick and roll.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Guys and all the college basketball.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
They played like an experienced team, and then you know,
it came out we had hand down Mandewns and we
can't have hand down Mandews did a much better job
in the second half. I mean, obviously they had ten
threes in the first half, we gave up four to second.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
You know the other thing too, you got a lot
of points off turnovers too. That helped kind of get
you back in the game.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
We had opportunities, we really did. I mean, our guys
kept batting, we kept working the game. You know, we
get right there one position game and you know we
give up another big three rdy.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
I thought their bench came off. The guys come off
the bench, really scored and really gave them a boost.
I thought that was one of the differences as well.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Well, when you the freshman kid would come in and
really be aggressive trying to score the basketball, and and
he did that. He came in and made I think
three four threes in the game and in the first half.
I think he had three three threes in the first half.
But we knew he was an aggressive player coming off
the bench when your glover could come in there and
and and play that way as well. But their guard
play was worth really outstanding the night.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Speaking of freshman kids, yours was pretty good tonight.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Oh yeah, Trade the game or Trade played played well.
We got to get him a little bit more help
in regards to to getting some things done around him,
and we will, I mean, our guards will play better
than what we played tonight. We played better in the
eight minutes we've had to this point right now, but
we'll get better as the season goes.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Final thing here, Roddy, what are the things that you
want to emphasize with the guys this week leading up
to the home opener on Friday.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Well, we have to stay connected, you know what I mean.
I mean, you know, we have a culture that's built
on you know, you're gonna have adversity. Basketball is full
of adversity. You know you have to being a persevered
through adversity. But they stayed the course and continue to
work the game. And you know, you know, we got
a young team that's still or what a new team rather,
they're still trying to put it together a little bit
and stuff. But we'll get better as we continue to

(02:34):
battle through this season.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
I appreciate the time, Roddie. Thanks. That's good. Yeah, that
was the postgame conversation with Roddy Terry talking about it
and again, a tough loss last night, but I'll tell
you there were some things to get excited about, most
notably the performance of trade John's I think we all
expected Trey to be pretty exciting to watch early on,

(02:58):
but for him to set a freshman debut record that
had been held by Kevin Durant by scoring twenty nine
points in the ballgame an affecting game, and he played
well on the defensive side as well. That was one
of the things that were that we were impressed with
to see is Trey Johnson played well and he picked
up some fouls on the second at but never got

(03:18):
himself in a serious foul trouble as he did in
the first two scrimmages.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
I texted some friends before the game, I said, really
excited to see Trey Johnson break Katie's scoring debut record tonight.
Oh yeah, I don't know about that. You know, we'll see.
He hit fifteen before halftime, Craig, he was five away
from it. And the first couple of shots, I mean,
I think he missed the first two he took. But
his ability to just spot up anywhere on the floor,

(03:45):
to get set correctly, to get lined up, I mean,
I had not seen a college player like him. I
don't think ever. He's super exciting and the one thing
that stands out Craig is his passion. He's a fiery dude,
and he likes to talk to his teammates in the
huddle out of plays. I mean, there was one play
in the corner where he flexed the ball out of

(04:06):
bounce and I think it was Texas basketball. We could
hear him scream from the concourse level, and that's a
type of passion that I think is going to help
this team. Not the result obviously they wanted last night,
but they're going to be okay with Trey Johnson.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
He was ten for twenty from the floor, five of
ten from three point range, four of five from the
foul line.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
He added five.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Rebounds, four assists, one turnover, and two steals in thirty
nine minutes. He played all but a minute of the game,
So yeah, keep an eye on him. Home opener is
Friday night for Texas As. They will host Houston Christian.
We'll be back to wrap up Hour number two on
Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
