Speaker 3 (00:27):
We'll get to some other topics, some NFL topics and
things as the show moves forward. But this being a
Long Horns Monday, of course we bring in the comments
from the head coach of the Texas Longhorns. It was
heard earlier live here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. It came your way live this morning at
eleven thirty. You know. It was preceded also by a
(00:49):
press conference with Texas soccer coach Ange Kelly and congratulations
dangeld Ange will join us on the program tomorrow. Texas
winning that SEC Tournament final over South Carolina won to
nothing great header finish off a corner kick from Lexi
Missimo in headed in by Carl Montgomery and Texas won
(01:14):
the match one nil. They will claim the first ever
SEC championship in any sport for Texas, the first one
claimed by Texas Soccer. So coming up at three o'clock
this afternoon and when the announcement comes down, we'll let
you know the particulars. But the NCAA Tournament selection show
(01:39):
comes on at three o'clock this afternoon, and Texas is
expected to host first round game, so we'll see on
the first weekend of tournament place so we'll update you
on that. But Ange will join us on the program
tomorrow afternoon, so we'll look forward to visiting with her.
All right, now to the head coach who followed her
at the odium, a Logborns head coach, Teve Sarkisian, who
(02:02):
took time to congratulate Angie before sitting down, and then
he sat down and led off in his opening statement
talking about some Texas soccer.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Alrighty, First of all, I know you guys just got
done visit with their but congratulations to Angie. What an
awesome job you and your team sec champs first one
for the University of Texas. Where to go, Where to go?
Where to go? Super fired up for them. But that's
the thing here, University of Texas. It's kind of like
the standard is a standard, and I talked about this
(02:31):
early on. It really doesn't matter what conference we're in.
That's that's the expectations is that we're going to go
compete for conference championships and national championships and super pumped
for Ange and and her and her girls and the
job they did, and it obviously serves as motivation for us.
I think today being Veterans Day, an opportunity to salute
our service this past Saturday with that game, and honor
(02:55):
our nation service members, our veterans, their families for all
that they do for us. And then I want to
thank our fans for Saturday and no eleven am kick
was early for everybody, but we're gonna need you again
this Saturday and Fayetteville for eleven am kick against Arkansas.
So just to recap the game, I was really proud
of our players, you know, coming off the buy, with
(03:17):
their preparation, their intent, their sense of urgency. I thought
we played a fantastic first half of football. I thought offensively,
we moved the ball extremely well. You know, the first
drive we kind of stub our toe and missed the
field goal, but the ball was moving well. We ended
up taking the sack on third down. But I think
we had over one hundred and fifty yards and fourteen
points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, I
(03:39):
think we had, you know, well over two hundred yards
and twenty one points. But what I loved about it
was our ability to play complimentary football in all three phases.
And you know, I think ay a key point in
that game it was twenty one to nothing, which we
had talked about after the ball. Game is twenty one
and nothing and we get the stop on third down.
It makes it fourth and four, and we decided to
(03:59):
put back out a field goal range and we get
the sacked by Gilbo. We call the time out. We
hit a couple passes, we hit Golden for a big touchdown.
They come back, we get the tipped interception, Alfred Collins
tips it to Anthony Smith gets the interception with about
forty five seconds to go in the half. We turned
that into a too a touchdown by Jayden Blue to
(04:20):
make it thirty five to nothing. And then the beauty
of what I loved about it was coming right out
in the second half. Alfred tips another pass interception by
Andrew mccouba. The offense turns it into to another score
to make it forty two to nothing. So just love
the way that we played the complimentary football. I love,
you know, so much of what we talked about Saturday night,
the fact of, you know, that we kind of could
(04:42):
play really good football in all three phases. I think
we're the only team in the country right now that's
in the top ten in offense and defense, and which
is a pretty good tell. You know, we were not
number one in both, but the fact that we're really
good in both, I think just shows to the balance
that we have as a football team. Our defense continues
to force turnovers at a very high rate right now,
(05:04):
and it's been a really onslaught on the football for
the last month, and that's a great thing to have. Offensively,
we got to continue to try to hold onto It's
unfortunate we had the one turnover, but the fact that
we turned those three turnovers into twenty one points I
think is big if we can continue down that road.
And I touched on just a couple of highlight guys
from the game. I thought Trey Moore had his best
(05:25):
game for US Saturday. I thought Alfred Collins had a
great game Saturday. It was great to see Jared Gibson
get back into the fold of what he was doing,
and it was good to have Isaiah Bond and Andrew mccooba.
Both back out there. Obviously, both had impact plays for So,
you know, I think Quinn again was a really good performance.
He remains to play really consistent. I thought the last
(05:47):
two ball games he's played really well. Outside of those
tip balls against Vanderbilt, I thought he's played well. So
things are moving in the right direction. We've challenged the
guys on a few things because we know we've got
a heck of a challenge going to Arkansas year Saturday.
We all know about the rivalry and what it means
to the University of Texas, what it means to Arkansas.
(06:09):
You know, last time we went there, things didn't go
so well for so hopefully we can put a better
foot forward, better foot forward against them in this ball game.
They've got a good football team. They're big, they're physical,
they're built like most SEC teams. They've got a very
explosive offense with the run game and the pass game.
They've got a big, physical front. They got a defensive
end who's going to be a first round draft pick
(06:31):
in Jackson. So we've got a work cut out for us.
But I like the mentality the team already here Monday
morning with them understanding Yeah, that was a good game
for us Saturday, but there's more work to be done.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Yeah, that's the plan to can continue the work forward
on that. So then into the questions for Sark and
the first one asked about his experience of going into
Fayetteville three years ago. It was only a second game
as head coach of the Longhorns. Remember they start off
with the Winever the Louisiana then went into fav I lost
that game forty to twenty one, and he was asked
(07:07):
if what his memories were of that game. Did it,
you know, bring about an uptick in the urgency to
field an SEC ready team, those kinds of things that
he was asked about, you.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Know, and going back, I always try to revisit some
of those games, even from years past, just to get
a sense and a feel. The frustrating part of that game,
more than anything, is we didn't play great. But then
you look up and you watch the game. We forget
it's the middle of the third quarter a sixteen to seven,
you know, and we were playing hard. We just weren't
playing great, And so I think on twofold is yeah,
(07:42):
obviously we wanted to upgrade as best we could. The roster,
especially from a debt perspective, and then as the game
wore on, a couple explosive plays kind of kicked into
play and unfortunately we didn't make some of our own.
But the competitiveness of our team. I thought we fought
in the game, but naturally, Okay, what do we need
(08:02):
to do. And I think it was good not only
for myself, but for the staff and for our players
to say, like, okay, that's an SEC team. At the time,
they weren't at the top of the SEC. There were
some pretty good teams still there, so we had we had,
you know, a hill to climb to get to where
we wanted to get to. So it feels pretty good
knowing we're going in there this year with what we
think is a little better, better roster, a little better
(08:26):
you know, understanding from a coaching staff perspective of what's
going to be needed in that environment. It's a very
tough environment, but what's going to be needed kind of
from an emotional and mental standpoint, but also from a
physical standpoint.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Yeah, that's a big part of it as well. Now
with regard to getting ready to play Arkansas this year,
and this is I thought was a pretty interesting question
was asked about the rivalry. Now, it depends on which
long warn fans you ask if you're asked about it,
whether there's a rivalry with Arkansas. A lot of Texas
(08:58):
fans think there really isn't that much. It's the old
the old, And again you'll hear Sark kind of channeled
this this phrase. But it's been mentioned the whole thing
about well they hate themselves, they hate us more than
they like themselves, that sort of thing. But still, uh
that that means there's rivalry, But is it equally fell
on both sides?
Speaker 2 (09:17):
And More's the point.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Sark was asked if he thought this rivalry with Arkansas
might be a little underrated because of the restoration of
the rivalry at Texas A and M and the Red
River rivalry with Oklahoma. So is this rivalry with Arkansas underrated?
Speaker 2 (09:33):
I think it might be underrated nationally, you know, I
don't I don't know if it's gonna get the same
exposure that it would nationally, but I will tell you
internally it's getting it's getting the same the same amount
that's needed that it deserves. And uh, you know this,
this rivalry's been going on for a long, long time.
(09:53):
I was joking with the team this morning. I don't
know what what Daryl Royal did to Arkansas back in
the day, but they absolutely hate it our guts, and
I think we learned that the first time around when
we went there. You know, you know, you know, you
watch some of the clips at the end of that game,
and Joe Tessitaur is talking about that Arkansas, you know,
hates Texas more than they like themselves, and he might
(10:15):
be right. So I think from our perspective, you know, internally,
we understand and value this rivalry and it's great to
have back. It's great for the state of Texas. It's
great for the state of Arkansas. I wish nationally it
probably got the exposure that this thing deserves. There's been
some great games historically that these two teams have butted
heads on, and so obviously we're looking forward to the opportunity.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Okay, we're gonna hear more from sark about this matchup
with Arkansas and about his team coming up. And up next,
we bring in Conceivable for a Monday here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app
