Speaker 1 (00:00):
Craigway Cameron Parker with you. What we're going to do
here coming up in a few minutes. For those of
you who missed out on the Sark media availability that
we aired in the two o'clock hour, we're going to
re erit here coming up in a few minutes. So
we'll do that and you'll get a chance to hear
that was from the SEC conference call. So you'll get
(00:20):
a chance to hear Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian there
on the SEC teleconference. As it is, you know, we're
back in this regular mode of Sark on Monday, and
then on Wednesday you hear the SEC teleconference, and then
on Thursdays is when you get the opportunity to hear
(00:41):
from him in his final media availability of the week.
And in that final media availability of the week is
largely a local media and you hear some interesting things
more quite often out of the local media. I wonder
(01:02):
Cam if some of that is just because of the
familiarity involved. You know, he knows a lot of the
uh you know, the local writers and broadcasters pretty well,
so sometimes it can make it sound a little more informal. Also,
by the same token, Sark won't pull any punches. He is,
(01:23):
as we heard in the two o'clock hour. You know,
because you knows Ship Brown very well, you can you
can give him kind of a short retort on something
like that. It's the people, you.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Know, right, Yeah, I mean we hear Kirk Bowles or
Cedric Holden. You know they'll make they'll make some jokes
to start off, and you know Sark will laugh and
appreciate it. And you know you're the same way, Creig.
You have that relationship with him versus you know, an
outside reporter who also you know, it's in being in sports.
It's weird because we know these guys, but we actually
we don't know them, right. We talked to them, we
(01:51):
know when they're in their press conferences or after games,
but we don't know them. And you know, they probably
they remember what we look like, but you know, they
probably don't remember our names unless we're on Twitter trashing
them or writing hit pieces like that. So it's always
an interesting dynamic to see the reporter relationship with the
player and the coach. And it's always fun with Sark
(02:12):
because he'll always give pretty insightful answers. But then if
you ask him a question he doesn't like, or if
you don't ask the question the right way, he will
make sure that you know it, as he has done
many times this year. And same thing with Nick Saban,
same thing with Bill Belichick, two guys who definitely have
had an influence on him in his life his coaching.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Well.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
And here's the other thing with Sark, and he said
it on air, he has said it on Longhorn Weekly, which,
by the way, it's coming your way tonight, six o'clock
Longhorn Weekly from Pluckers the West Campus location. We record
the program at six. It'll air tomorrow night at seven,
preceded by a live edition of Longhorn Weekly with Rodney Terry,
(02:56):
the men's basketball coach, at six o'clock mark. So it's
kind of a double hitter back to back. But the
program on Wednesdays, as we will tonight, and Ricky Williams
our special guest tonight. Oh Ricky, yeah, yeah, the ninet
eight Heightsbend Trophy winner. So he's gonna he's gonna join
us out there. But what I started to say was, uh,
Sark kind of he laughs about this, and he says,
(03:16):
beyonco he's referring to John Bianco, the Associo Athletic director
for any media relations gets on me sometimes if I
if I'm a little too short in my answer with
a reporter, but what he's saying is he said it.
It comes down to are you asking a question that
makes sense or are you asking a question to get
(03:39):
a click or a hit or something like that, because
if it's a legitimate question in his eyes, he'll definitely
make every effort answer. That's what you'll hear in the
press conference, but by the in the uh, in the teleconference,
but by the same token, you know, comes strong, you know,
be understand what you're asking and uh. That's that's when
(04:00):
he gets, you know, a little bit. I don't know
if sideways is the right word, but you'll you'll say,
I don't understand what you're talking about, you know, and
you have to do a better job of asking. In
his mind, you have to do a better job of
asking the question then the way he hears it the
first time from you. But again a lot of that
is down to interpretation and reporting. I didn't ask you
(04:23):
about this, Let me ask you about it now. Did
you follow all of that that crazy stuff that was
going on? I guess it was reported from barstool about
quinn Ewers, and it was a screenshot at something that
looked like it had some really unsavory things texting what
between himself and a young lady or something. Turned out
(04:45):
it wasn't his his account, wasn't his phone. Barstool actually
apologized sort of, they did that. Castillano's apology apologies and
a Castiano's deep drive to write and that's going to
make it afford to nothing game, right, So they did
they did that, So they kind of half apologized on
that deal. But in this world that we live in
(05:08):
right now, it happens a lot. I mean, people are
so interested in being first or fast or whatever that
sometimes some of the details get left by the roadside.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
And it happens a lot in social media, and you
know a lot of cat fishing, and you know, deep
fakes and a lot of stuff going on right now
with AI with things, you know, with was it a
President elect Trump said or other things that are going
around that just aren't true. And you know, the same
thing happens all the time with screenshots and it's always
from a barstool account or a shady account. It's never official.
(05:42):
But it picks up traction because you know, either people
want to believe it or people just find it funny
and they don't you know, there is no gatekeeping anymore
in our society in terms of what's real and what's
not real, and gets picked up and aggregated and then
it ends up on the stephen A. Smith Show, or
it happened with Pat Mafee on Monday with with a
fake staff that they talked about, and that's on ESPN.
(06:04):
You know, there's millions of people tuning in the same
thing happened with you know, with Quinn. Then now I
think another bolster, Willcount, did the same thing with Marcel Reed,
you know, a fake screenshot and stuff, so and everything
can be altered. The sad thing is it's just if
you we learned this in journalism school. It's just you know,
for anything, you know, whether it's if it's a quote
or a story, you always want to have at least
(06:25):
two sources, right, And I think that's gone by the
wayside right now, especially in sports reporting with some of
these things where they just care about the clicks and
the hits and the fuse and they you know, they
don't care about properly vetting out the information. And that's
what barstool is, right. They just they want the clicks
and the fuse and the shares. They don't care if
it's accurate or not. You know, I'm sure the person
put out there, you know, maybe he was forced to apologize,
(06:47):
but you know, if he was a smart first of
all white, who even cares what he does? What Quinn
yours does on his own time?
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Is quin you weres personal if it was him? Right,
even if it was.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Him, But you know, I think I don't know if
it came from the A and M barstool account or
just the SEC barstoolccount, but who cares whatever it turns
out to be fake. But there's people out there who
believe it. I had someone you know, sending me that
tweet yesterday. I was a look at Quinn yours. It's like,
it's not real, dude, It's not real. But the thing is,
there's people out there, sadly who believe it. And this
happens all across different types, especially not just sports.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Yes, part of the world we live in.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Before we get to the break and then we'll and
then we'll hear from sart from the SEC teleconference I
want to give you the opportunity, your chance to win
a pair of tickets to the Story so Far at
December seventh. Camera discovered yesterday that that's a band, right,
I think so? Yeah, you were looking it up. Come
(07:43):
back from break one of these days and listen to music.
It might be a down we actually know pretty well. Yeah,
the Story so Far. It's at Boeing Center at tech
Port on December seventh, and all you have to do
is visit AM thirteen under the zone dot com to
enter for your chance to win. You don't even have
to do the talkback feature to win tickets to see
(08:06):
the Story so Far pair of tickets. You can enter
by visiting AM thirteen hundred zone dot com and then
you'll have a chance to win a pair of tickets
to see the story so Far. Cameron's going to do
some more research on the story so Far, and it's
and it's not just the story so far. It's the
story so far with an exclamation.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Exclamation yeah on the end, not a question marks the
story so far.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
No story so far, which is not to be confused
with the ban from the sixties, question Mark and the Mysterians,
but had a big hit ninety six tiers. Not a
sure if you say so. Yeah, yeah, not a question
on that. All right, we'll continue on the yacht Rock
Wednesday coming up when we continue here on Sports Radio
(08:51):
AM thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. All right,
let's hear from Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. Again this
was we brought it to you in the two o'clock hour,
but uh, for those of you missed it, this is
the SEC teleconference. Now, this is when sark addresses the
questions and you'll hear them from the moderator of the
SEC and the and the questions being asked. We'd like
(09:14):
for you to be able to you know, kind of
invite you in and let you hear a little bit
of this. So, uh, this is Logwarts head coach Steve
Sarkegan from just a little while ago with this week's
SEC teleconference.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
Yeah, great opportunity to go on the road to restore
you know, historic rivalry here at the University of Texas,
one that Texas and Arkansas had battled for a long
long time.
Speaker 6 (09:36):
Some great teams, some some great games, and you know,
for this for this rivalry to be restored and know
so much is made in college football right now about realignment,
conference realignment and teams losing rivalries. Uh we we've picked
up two great ones this being the first year with Arkansas,
so looking forward to the opportunity Saturday.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
First of all, we had a Tom Murphy the Arkansas Democrat.
Speaker 6 (10:01):
Is that.
Speaker 7 (10:03):
Hey, Steve, I'm wondering what your take is on the
quarterback Taylor Green, what what dimensions he give to them?
And also his backup mount of Kott Singleton's gotten enough
action that you probably could have a comment on.
Speaker 8 (10:14):
Him as well.
Speaker 6 (10:15):
Yeah, I think I think Taylor is a you know,
fantastic talent. You know, he's got obviously has the size,
the arm strength, the ability to run the football and
quarterback driven runs, the ability to buy time, make all
the throws down the field.
Speaker 8 (10:30):
He covers a lot of ground, you know a lot
of times you watch the tape and you like, how.
Speaker 6 (10:36):
Did he cover so much ground? And it doesn't look
like he's moving that fast, but yet he is, you know,
at sixty six two and thirty pounds, so really really
good talent, you know. Obviously, you know the backup is
a little bit different build more of kind of that
stocky running back style, but yet still has the ability
to do what they do. I think coach Petrino has
done a great job with both of them and coach Pittman.
(10:59):
I mean, anytime you're you're abage nearly three hundred yards
passing and two hundred yards rushing, that's that's a pretty
good offensive football team. And in their system, it definitely
starts with the quarterback.
Speaker 7 (11:09):
And last week or last game, Arkasa gave up a
bunch of passing yards and the deep ball. I'm wondering
just what your thoughts are on taking on this defense.
Speaker 6 (11:19):
Well, I think they're they're a talented defense. They've had
two weeks to uh to kind of get some things,
you know, shirt up and cleaned up. I know we're
gonna get a great version of them defensively. So you know,
they got really good coaches over there. So I don't
think we can just assume that we're gonna have that
same luxury. You know, we're gonna have to play really
good football offensively. We're need to be balanced, you know,
(11:41):
and that's that's a challenge. Is a very good upfront.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Next to Steve Malta, w'sz.
Speaker 9 (11:52):
Hey coach Hope you're doing well today, sir, Thank you.
I heard you earlier in the on Monday, I mentioned
about maybe not pivoting towards former players talking because of
the emotions that they have. How do you walk that
line of who you want to talk to your team
during a season, coach.
Speaker 8 (12:13):
Uh, I like to lean towards me.
Speaker 10 (12:18):
That's not to take anything away from from anybody else.
You know, We've got some great people, some great speakers
that we bring in throughout the summer, throughout training camp
to speak to our team and to a fantastic job.
But when the season rolls around, I think the consistent
messaging throughout throughout the fall is important and that our
(12:39):
that our players understand why we're.
Speaker 6 (12:41):
Talking about specific things on certain weeks.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (12:44):
So, generally I'm the one that talks to our team
from a motivational standpoint. Now that the players talk as well,
so I give them that credit. But I but I
do think that that the messaging is important. But but again,
we rely on a lot of those outside speakers throughout
the summer and throughout training camp to get ourselves ready
for the season.
Speaker 9 (13:01):
And something Sam mentioned earlier in the teleconference, coach was
the energy in the building there in twenty one. Now,
I know you were on the short end of the stick,
but I just in terms of that rivalry in the building,
did you feel that intensity as well back in twenty
one in Faible?
Speaker 6 (13:19):
Coach, Yeah, I'm not sure if there was even a
stick for us to get a short end up at night.
We got our ass whips, so hopefully we played better Saturday.
Speaker 8 (13:26):
Thank you, coach.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
Bexas bob O the ark Sood Democrat?
Speaker 6 (13:35):
Is that?
Speaker 11 (13:37):
Hey, Steve, I don't know if I heard that saying
before that. That's that's a good one. Hey, Lucas, you
know Arkansas's tight end. I think Texas offered him. I
don't know if you remember recruiting. I know you guys
recruit a lot of big time players, but a number
nine for ursaw tight end.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
Just wonder what your take is on him.
Speaker 6 (13:56):
Yeah, you know, he's a guy that definitely, you know,
he gets a lot of targets. You know, they they
you know, I think again, Coach Petrino does a great
job of scheming and working to get people isolated one
on one and opening zones and and he's a huge
you know product of that. You know, it leads him
in touchdown receptions. And he's a guy that has a
(14:16):
tight end. They move around and they create you know,
he's really the primary on a lot of things that
they do.
Speaker 11 (14:22):
And then now I know you're not all the way
through the SEC schedule, yeah, but you're you're a good
way through, and just wondering what what the grind has
been like compared to what's the reality that's been like,
compared to Mabe.
Speaker 8 (14:32):
What the expectation was, how that's been for y'all.
Speaker 6 (14:36):
Well, you know, I think that that we had a
pretty good understanding coming in that there was going to
be a physical component to this right and and how physical, uh,
the game is in the SEC at the line of scrimmage,
and and this week's no different. You know, Arkansas is
very good at the line of scrimmage. They have big people,
they're they're built like a lot of the rest of
the SEC is built. I think one of the one
(14:58):
of the bigger challenges in this conference is is the
metal intensity that you have to have week to week.
Speaker 8 (15:03):
There are no layups in this league. You know, you
have to come ready to play week in and week out. Uh,
and the moment, the moment, you don't you get beat.
Speaker 6 (15:12):
And there's been some really good teams in our league
that have probably lost games that they're looking back and
they're kicking themselves that maybe they weren't quite as ready
to play.
Speaker 8 (15:20):
And so I think that's.
Speaker 6 (15:20):
Probably the bigger challenge is getting the getting our players
every Monday in the right frame of mind to prepare
the right way, uh for the for the task at hand,
which part of which is again that physical nature at
the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (15:35):
Thanks yep, Nexus Kurt Bowles the Hoaston Chronicle.
Speaker 12 (15:45):
See because Taylor Green is so big, or you're bringing
in Vince Young to run the scout team, I'd love to.
Speaker 10 (15:52):
I don't.
Speaker 8 (15:52):
Uy's kind of busy right now, but yeah, very somewhere, you.
Speaker 12 (15:57):
Know, because he's such a threat to run. I have
a lot of Arkansas opponents, you know, run zone coverage
to you know, keep their eyes in the backfield so
they're you know, not man the man running down the
field away from him.
Speaker 6 (16:10):
Well, I think, you know, I think everybody's you know,
tried different things, some successful, some not so successful. Right,
they don't average you know, five hundred yards a game offensively,
you know, if people are shutting them down, and so
I think, like anything, when to play good defense is
one you try to develop a plan that you know
(16:31):
you has a solid foundation and that you have the
auxiliary calls off of that off of that plan so
that you're not just a sit and duck, you know,
sit and target, you know, because you know, again they've
got great experience on that on their on their coaching
staff with coach Pittman and coach Petrino, and so you know,
I think I think varying.
Speaker 8 (16:49):
Looks is going to be key.
Speaker 6 (16:52):
I think putting ourselves in position to guard them because
they have plenty of weapons to throw the ball to.
But yet you know, make sure that that we try
to try to contain him against not only the designed runs,
but again the off schedule runs, and so, like I said,
it's a heck of a challenge.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
Thank you, Thanks Is and more.
Speaker 13 (17:13):
Richardson of Orange Bloods, Good afternoon.
Speaker 8 (17:17):
Coach.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
Coach Quinn has played in a lot of obviously big
games on the road with you.
Speaker 8 (17:24):
Guys throughout his career.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Talk about from your perspective what you've seen from him
when he goes in on the road. It seems like
he's pretty unflappable, and is there a road game that
kind of sticks out to you the most that you're
really impressed with, whether it's for preparation.
Speaker 8 (17:43):
Or how he played well. Yeah, I think again, I think.
Speaker 6 (17:48):
His general demeanor is helpful when you go on the road.
You know, Quinn is a very calm, cool customer. You know,
he doesn't he doesn't get too emotional.
Speaker 8 (17:57):
Too high, too low.
Speaker 6 (17:59):
It's pretty even, and I think that's important when you're
on the road. I think that's important for us as
a team. I think poised composure is always critical when
you're on the road, and he exemplifies that, and so
that's helpful. I think probably the best one that I
can recall is going into Tuscaloosa a year ago.
Speaker 8 (18:18):
I felt like he was really dialed in, and he was.
Speaker 6 (18:21):
He was really just in a great frame of mind,
and I think that that permeated throughout the entire offense
that day. That night, you know, we had no pre
stat penalties in a very tough environment, which tells me
we were poised.
Speaker 8 (18:34):
We were composed, but we were focused.
Speaker 6 (18:36):
You know, the right type of mental intensity needed in
that environment.
Speaker 8 (18:39):
And that's what it's going to take you here Saturday
as well.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
Tanxsas Chip Brown of Horns twenty four to seven.
Speaker 13 (18:54):
Hey, Steve, I know you mentioned you, you know, wanted
to get the outside zone going, and and.
Speaker 8 (19:00):
Uh, what what do you think it is? It's sort
of held it back. We're just we're just not in sync,
you know.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
And and like any style of running game that you have,
timing and being in sync is is is really important,
and confidence is really important. And so whether it's angles
on blocks, whether it's run timing with the with the
running back and the offensive line, whether it's vision by
the runners, whether it's you know, our combination of blocks
(19:28):
on the front side or combination of blocks on the backside,
it just it just hasn't quite been in sync.
Speaker 8 (19:32):
And so you know, it's, like.
Speaker 6 (19:34):
Anything, we've got to emphasize it more. We've got to
put in the time and the effort, which I think
that we're doing, and then we got to start to
find our rhythm there again.
Speaker 8 (19:43):
And you know, I talked a lot about.
Speaker 6 (19:44):
Going into last week's game about finding our mojo as
an offense, which I think that we did. And this
week it's been about, Okay, how do we how do
we get back to our timing and execution of our
outside zone?
Speaker 8 (19:57):
Because at some point, obviously you're.
Speaker 13 (19:59):
Gonna need to run it again seven and eight man boxes,
and you've had the rotation at running back, and it's
it's been a lot, a little little different this year
than in years past.
Speaker 8 (20:10):
I'm not sure what you're asking me.
Speaker 13 (20:12):
Well, just I mean, that's how difficult has it been
to have the rotation at running back and trying to
sync everything up and knowing that, you know, to kill
the clock late in the game, you're gonna have to
run it against seven and eight man boxes or we
can throw it.
Speaker 8 (20:28):
I still don't know what you're asking me, But next question,
it's all your time, So thank you today. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
So there's this week's SEC teleconference with log Worns head
coach Steve Sarkeshan. All Right, we have more some NFL
notes that we have to get to that's coming next
when we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen hunderd the
zone of the iHeartRadio app.
