Glad to have you with us and our thanks to
Roger Wallace joining us last hour on the program, you
heard from Longhorn basketball players Last Hour Julian Larry and
Jordan Pope. In case you missed what we brought you
on back in the first hour of the program, Loghorn
(01:52):
head coach Chief Sarcasian's weekly media Zoom. We brought that
to you and we're gonna re erit as we do
on Thursdays, because it's the final opportunity he has to
visit with a local area and in a couple of cases,
(02:12):
national media. So we'll have that for you coming up
next segment. Sark with his final examination of where the
football team is heading into this game with the Arkansas Razorbacks.
I made reference to this yesterday, and I probably should
make reference to it again today, if only because this
(02:33):
is a Texas Arkansas week. And pause for a swallow water.
There we go, thank him. This rivalry has a great
deal of history, as we know, even though it was
pretty much suspended after the nineteen ninety one season, Arkansas's
last year in the Southwest Conference, and then they didn't
(02:57):
see each other again until they had the home and home.
Well first, they actually did meet each other in the
Y two K Cotton Bowl January first, two thousand. Remember
that deal. How kind of weird it was a lot
of people worried that the the world's computers were going
to stop as it clicked the digit from one to two,
and that electricity might go off everywhere, and water might
(03:23):
stop running through our systems, and all kinds of weird things.
None of that happened. Unfortunately for the Long Horns. Had
a rough game that day in that Cotton Bowl loss
to Arkansas, Major Apple White Tour a knee ligament that
it was difficult. It was a tough, tough ball game
in Texas lost that Y two K Cotton Bowl to
(03:45):
the Razorbacks. And that was the one where they had
players suspended, you know, the night before the game, that
sort of thing. So it was a tough go on that.
But they didn't see each other in the regular seas
until they had a back to back in O three
and O four, you know three, Arkansas came in here
and they had At Jones at quarterback and he was
mobile and he stayed away from Long Wrens and he
was able to beat them on some big passes downfield.
(04:06):
In Arkansas won that game at dk R. They went
back to Arkansas and four and had a real nail
bier tooth and nail back and forth, and Log Warns
came up with a couple of a huge fumble curry thing.
Larry Dibbles recorded a fumble recovery and then and also
(04:27):
Philip Geeger had an interception late and Vin Jeong had
a really nice shovel pass kind of a little flick
out to Cedric Benson who took it for a touchdown.
Texas ended up winning that game twenty two to twenty
in Fayetteville and O four. Then they came back and
they played in O eight in Austin. Texas blew him
out beat him. I think it was fifty two to fourteen,
(04:48):
and they were supposed to come the next year and
asked to push it back because they were starting a
brand new non conference series with Texas A and M,
who at the time was still in the Big twelve,
and they were starting this thing at Jerry World, and
so Texas agreed to move it back. And first they
(05:10):
were talking about I think twenty twelve, then it got
pushed to twenty fourteen, then I think twenty eighteen, and
they finally said twenty twenty one. So the game three
years ago that Texas played in Fayetteville was originally scheduled
when Mac Brown was the coach. It was to have
been played in twentyd and nine, twelve years and three
(05:32):
football coaches, three had football coaches. Later, they finally played
that game because Charlie Strong had been the head coach
and then Tom Herman and then Steve Sarkeisha. Now when
Charlie was the coach, Texas did play Arkansas one more time.
Improbably the most forgettable bowl game the Texas ever played.
And I'll give you two, but this was one of them.
(05:55):
In twenty fifteen, Texas played Arkansas in the Texas Bowl.
Lost thirty one seven and I think the long Horns
had fifty nine yards a total offense in that game.
It was a bad night, tough game. It was. Yeah,
it was not good and they lost that contest. So
there was that, and I guess I was twenty fourteen.
(06:19):
But anyway, that was in that Texas Bowl game they did.
There was, believe it or not, I think a ball
game that might have been worse that Texas played in. Now,
at the time this happened, this Bowl game was played,
I was not part of the broadcast team. In fact,
I was still in college. This was in nineteen eighty
four and that was the year when Texas was number
(06:45):
two in the country in oklahom was number one and
they had the game in Dallas, and we talked about
that as being forty years ago, that that fifteen to
fifteen tie and the rain we had Todd Dodge on
with us, who was the quarterback for Texas at that time,
and it wound up being a fifteen to fifteen tie.
(07:06):
Logorns also had some disappointing losses down the stretch and
ended up at seven three and one, and so they
didn't win the Southwest Conference championship and most of the
other bowl slots were taken, and then it was revealed
(07:27):
there was a brand new bowl game coming out to
be played, I believe on Christmas Day or thereabouts or
the day after whatever, the Freedom Bowl in Anaheim to
We played at Anaheim Stadium, the converted baseball stadium where
the Rams were by then playing home games, And so
(07:49):
Fred Akers had the team take a vote, and the
team voted not to go to a bowl game at first,
and then Coachakers came back said, I don't think you
guys understand he has bowl game, brand new bowl game
he can helped launch. Its Anaheim, It's Disneyland, it's all
this great stuff. They took a second vote again, the
(08:10):
players voted not to play in the game, and so
fred Acres came back in and said, look, you know,
I think you really need to consider this deal is
and whether or not they took a third vote, or
whether coach Akers just said we're going, they went. They
went to the Freedom Bowl. The team was not interested
(08:32):
in playing in it, and it showed. They played an
Iowa team that had chucked long at quarterback, and he
carved them up and beat them fifty five to seventeen
in the rain. By the way, it was a nasty
night in Anaheim. And when the game was over, the
late Ron Franklin, who of course really became well known
(08:52):
with all the years he worked at ESPN. At the time,
he was the Long Wornes play by play voice. He
did it for a few years before moving to ESPN
in the eighties, and he was working with a gentleman
by the name of Glenn Brown, and they had to
fill another segment or two, as postgame shows go sometime,
and he turned to Glenn Brown and he said, Glenn,
(09:14):
you know the Longhorns, and they've already been through like
practically an hour of postgame and it had just just
been this Tan death March.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
It was just brutal.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
And he said, Glenn, let me get your thoughts one
more time on this long worn team and what happened
here tonight where they have to go, and Glenn Brown,
he's color analyst, who was like taking a drag on
a cigarette in the booth, blows out a puff of
smoke and turns and says, you know, Ron, I think
I've said all I want to say about this game tonight,
(09:45):
put the cigarette back in his mouth and took his
head set off. Now that's teamwork, right. So that might
have been a worse, worse Bowl game even than the
one in twenty fifteen. But anyway, those are probably the
two worst long worn ball games if it's other games
where they didn't play well and got beat, but those
two certainly come to mind. Also. Then, so they finished
(10:10):
it up in twenty twenty one, that home and home,
and by then it was known that the long Runs
were going to be going into the Southeastern Conference, and then,
of course Arkansas took Texas to the woodshed that night.
They won forty to twenty one. And somebody asked Sam Pittman,
the Arkansas coach, in his weekly news conference this week,
(10:31):
if he thought that Texas was given a blueprint for
what they needed to do to build a competitive program
in the SEC. And Pittman's response, and I agree with
what it was more along the lines of perhaps so,
but I think he already had in mind how he
knew he was going to have to build this team
(10:52):
with big guys in the line and all that sort
of stuff. So as much as folks would like to
ascribe it to, oh, this is how the se Se
plays and you better set that as your mark, Sark
had his own ideas about what he had to do
to build this program into a contender, which of course
he now has. Speaking of which we'll hear from Coach
Sark's news Zoom the Media Zoo coming up, and we'll
(11:17):
have that next here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
