Speaker 1 (00:00):
Later on in the third hour of the program, we're
gonna hear from Rodney Terry Longwren men's basketball coach, But
right now we want to hear from the head coach
of the Texas women. We're gonna split it up from
his media available because there's some really good stuff in there,
and then in between that, we're also going to visit
with Greg Temper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
But let's hear from head coach Vic schaeffer'st team is
(00:22):
three and zero and they are also ranked fourth in
the country and they have that forty acres field trip
game tomorrow morning at eleven o'clock against Charleton State's here's
the media conversation part of it with head coach Vic Schaffer.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Obviously, tomorrow is our elementary school game day, and I
know everybody that'll be there, I'll have their earplugs in.
But we're excited to host over five thousand young kids
throughout our community and their teachers tomorrow and uh, great
(01:01):
opportunity for our kids too, have a chance to be
role models and be seen and uh and after the
game to meet some of those folks as well. So
gonna play a really good uh Charlton State team. Uh
well coached, you know obviously the coach somebody I'm very
(01:26):
familiar with and Bill Rock and uh, he's doing a
great job with that group. They're two and two and
they've they've played pretty well on the road at Arizona
and at UTEP whereas there are two losses.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
And so.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Got a really good, really good team, a veteran team
of eight seniors. You know, they're they're they're a very
athletic and uh again he's he's doing, uh doing a
great job with him, and so we'll have to we'll
have to be ready, ready to play.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
It's an early game.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
My team will tell you, you know, my philosophy is sleepy
team loses, and so we'll we'll have to be up
and ready to go in the morning.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Five.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Any time you go against five seniors at this level,
you that's that to me is instant credibility. And then
a veteran coach like coach Brock and and so excited
for the opportunity for our kids. We played really hard
the other night, y'all. I know you didn't read about
it in the paper, but we did have a game
(02:31):
against the Paul Sunday, and our kids played really hard,
and UH really proud of them, and uh I thought
they they they they just competed. And for our first
road game against a quality opponent, you know, it was
it was good to see us come out and play
(02:53):
as hard as we did. Offensively, we shot sixty percent
in the second half. And I thought our kids made
a little jump between their last game and in that
game as far as just how hard they played. Now hard,
they competed, and we dealt with some foul trouble, and
and we're able to still handle it, and and and
(03:17):
and really not miss beat. So you score ninety one points,
don't make a single three pointer, and shoot fifty nine percent.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Of the free throw line, you're doing a lot of
things right.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
And so I miss seeing my friend Doug Bruno on
the on the sideline, been very concerned about him.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
As he's had some health issues.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
But I did finally after reaching out to him for
over a month, I was able to finally visit with
him on game day Sunday via the phone, and he
sounded great, and it really brought a little peace to
me because he's not it's not that he's somebody I
talked to every day or every week. But he's somebody
(04:00):
I have a deep respect and high regard for. He's
somebody that's impacted our great game for many, many many years,
and he is De Paul women's basketball, and so I
was glad to know that at least through the phone,
he sounded well. And he told me he thought he'll
(04:21):
be back on the bench maybe in a month, but
right for right now, you had to stay away.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
And so Jill's doing a great job with that team.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Again, I was very pleased coming out of there playing
as hard as we played. Again, didn't play great all
the time, but we played really hard.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
Beck, you got a bunch of people playing about the
same twenty minutes so far, who's taken the opportunity maybe
to press you and you know, let you know that
they deserve some playing time.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Well, I think you know, certainly Shay has been someone
than the other night. She was three for nine and
zero for four from three before that, And again it
happened in shoot around.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
She made everything she looked at.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
I think I looked at Brionna Preston and went, that's
the kiss of death, because that's usually I work. You
make everything and shoot around and five hours later you can't,
you know, it's your backside with both hands. And so
she's really been making a lot of shots for us
from three.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
She's been very effective.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Jordan Lee is proven, you know, don't worry about her classification.
She's ready to play at this level. But again it's
because she's so competitive. She plays so hard. Preston plays
really hard, and so, you know, I think those young kids,
even Justice I thought was different at DePaul Versus earlier.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
And so.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Layla's getting healthy and so she's she was five for
nine the other night, but played really hard defensively, had
four rebounds for us. So you know, I think all
those kids are continuously getting better. Kyla came in and
immediately impacted the game. Had four offensive, seven rebounds total,
(06:11):
but block shots, altered shots, just had a physical presence.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
In the lane.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Got tangled up, you know, a couple of times and
fell to the ground with whoever got tangled up with.
And I'm pretty sure they came out on the short
end of that deal. So you know, just uh, I
think a lot of kids, That's why I'm playing them
all right now. I'm trying to, you know, see who's
gonna continue to rise to the top. And you know,
(06:38):
uh still haven't played my four guard lineup, and I'm
gonna do that, and uh, I think that'll be a
lineup that can create a lot of problems for people.
So I wish I had an answer for you. But
there's a reason why there's so many people playing so
many minutes because they've all warrant. They all warranted, and
they're you know, Jack Linga, she came in the other
(07:00):
night and immediately impacted the game for us at four
and you know, so with her length and size, and
so I mean, I can just I can talk about
them all, but that's why they're all playing so many minutes.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
Yeah, Vic, I mean winning by forty six points. I
don't know if you're the greatest women's team that ever
took the court or in any way, do you worry
that you know you won't be as tested once conference
play starts. They're fine.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
We we have so many non conference games. I think
first you have to give my kids credit. The paul
Is is gonna be fine. They're gonna win a lot
of games. Our kids played really good. Richmond was twenty
nine and six last year and they got everybody back,
and two Power five transfers that were difference players on
(07:58):
their team. I got to go to Richmond, I got
to go to James Madison, I got to go play
Maryland on a neutral floor. If we take care of business,
I'm going to play a top twelve team in West
Virginia a week from Sunday. So and then I've got
(08:18):
a top twenty five team in South Dakota State. I mean,
this will be the toughest non conference schedule I've had,
maybe ever. So I think there's plenty of test for
us between now and our first conference game. And you know,
none of those teams other than South Dakota State are
(08:39):
at home, so you know, again, I feel like we're
going to be tested. I feel like we'll be ready,
and again, I think we have plenty of schedule.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
I just.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Think you have to give our kids a little credit.
They played pretty good the other night, and you know,
Tarleton'll come in here and I know everybody's thinking, Okay,
they used to be whatever, they used to be Division
two or whatever, and now they're not. Well, no, they're
not now. And he's got five seniors starting. They went
out to Arizona and played them really tough and got
(09:17):
beat twenty. They go to UTEP get beat three on
the road, and they've won two games at home pretty handily.
So you know we're gonna have to We'll have to
be ready. And again it's a sleepy game in the
morning eleven am with a bunch of screaming kids in
the gym, so you never know how that's going to happen.
So you about where we are.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
You like the chemistry so far and how the kids
are connecting.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
I do, man, I love this team, you know, I
love being around them. You know they're they're you know,
we got those five seniors and in I love o
our approach, especially on game day. I mean, you've got
Booker coming out at two hours prior to TIP, getting
(10:04):
in her twenty five thirty minutes of shots up. You
got Rory coming out with her. You got Shay and
Layla coming out, you know, hour and a half, you
got four or five others coming out hour. So we've
had to stairstep our pregame shooting because you know what,
in the past, everybody rolled out there at an iron
(10:24):
fifteen minutes prior to tip, because that's when coach said
you had to be out and so now you got
thirteen people trying to shoot. We ain't getting very many
shots up when you got thirteen of them out there.
So Booker kind of started it last year in wanting
to get her own time, and then now we got
a whole group of kids wanting to do it. So
(10:45):
I love our approach. And again it's great to have
those seniors who can be a pro, can show them,
show these young kids what it's like to be at
Texas and to understand, man, we're fixing get this team's
best shot. We better be ready to play. We're fixing
go through this scouting report after pregame meal. You better
(11:06):
know what's going on. And if I call your name,
you better not know the answer.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
That's the first part of the media visit with Vick Schaeffer.
Pretty compelling stuff and more to come from them a
little later on. Up next, we visit with Greg Tepper,
managing editor of Dave Campbells Texas Football Magazine here on
Sports Medio AM thirteen under the Zone
