Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now let's go back to women's basketball. Some pretty compelling
stuff from Vic Shaef for the longrn's head coach to
start off the irony. Have some more from his media
availability today.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Hey, coach, two questions. I want to ask you about
Kyla because it looked to me Sunday night. Could she
be an enforcer? Do you want that on this type
of team? Somebody who can come in and just immediately
mix it up and kind of lay down the law
type of player, especially with her quickness and agility.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Yeah, I think you're right. I think you've got I've
got some options there. Like there's a part of me
that if she was healthy, I might want to start
her because Shae. I can bring Shae in at two positions,
and I know she's going to fix what's broke because
(00:51):
she's been here, and there's some comfort for me knowing
that and our team.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
I mean, I know our team and it's so confident
in Shae.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
The other side, though, is Shane knows exactly what I
want to start the game. Just like the other night,
we executed that first play to a t. She made
a great cut, Booker made a great pass. But Shaye
also brings defensively what I want to do, and she
understands that piece, and so you know it's uh. And
(01:25):
then Jordan Lee, she's the other one I could easily
throw into the starting lineup. If we go out and
play horse right now, she might win the horse game.
You know, she might win the three point shooting contest.
I know everybody's worried about my three point shooting, but
I've never been a coach that went, oh my god,
we got to make ten threes a game? No, why
(01:45):
would you take a twenty two foot or if you
can go get a layup like that?
Speaker 4 (01:50):
Makes no sense to me.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
But I know everybody's a great coach, and they all
got their own opinions.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
But we scored ninety one points.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
If we'd have shot seventy five eighty percent of the
free tow line, we'd have probably scored one hundred and
still not made a three. So I last year's team
didn't make a lot of threes and won thirty three games.
So I know, you know, I'd love to be able
to make six, seven, eight threes a game.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
Be great.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
I'd love it, be the first one in line for it,
But I don't think it handicaps you if you don't
have somebody that can make one or make it consistently.
I think we've got players that can make them consistently. Again,
it's getting in the gym. It's being familiar with the
gym you're playing in, and then when you go on
(02:36):
the road, that's a different gym. And so for us here,
you know, we're trying to get into Moody to be
familiar with our home gym, and then when we're on
the road, that's just life on the road. And so
the secrets of success winning on the road has always
been defense, rebounding, an inside game. That's it doesn't say
(02:56):
anything about three point shooting. Defense, rebounding, inside game, that's
what you got to have when you go on the road.
If you can make some shots from three, great, But
if you got them other three cooking, you got a
chance to win.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
And real quick, I apologize if you've talked about this
and I just don't know it, But what what is
what's the deal with Abby?
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Yeah, so she's she's got another injury that she's.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Dealing with, and and so we're just that's where we're
at right now. She's not practicing, and you know, she's
she's having to not be able to practice right.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Now, okay, And is there any timetable on that or not?
No right now?
Speaker 4 (03:42):
And I don't I don't have any idea.
Speaker 5 (03:44):
Okay, coach, thank you for being with us. First of all,
you've got a really really good point in your opening
statement playing de Paul and not not you know, might
not have read about it. And and I have people
come up to the game and show up at the
game and fill the stadium has always been very important
(04:04):
for you to you for a very good reason. And
I'm thinking about what I call and what everyone else
calls the Caitlin Clark effect. And I don't mean to
compare any one of your players to her. She's a
generational player, but what she effectively done has done is
she's caused people to want to watch women's basketball. And
(04:24):
so I'm curious, just from your framework, if your view
of the world, how can you know fans, how could
we get fans to cause them to want to show
up to the game. You know, what does that look
like to you? What is I'm not sure the problem
is solvable. I mean, again, she's a big draw, and
(04:44):
you know, but I'm just curious your thoughts on that
whole thing, because that would be women's basketball and women's
sports is exploding for a very good reason too. So
curious your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Well, I mean, I'll say this, I've got I've got
general players on my team right now. I've got kids
playing for the University of Texas right now that they
haven't had kids like them in here in a long
long time. I mean, let's just be honest about it again.
Part of building your program is having people like you
(05:20):
on here covering my team and helping me spread the word.
Unless I missed it, we weren't in the newspaper the
last two days. I'm going to assume we weren't in
there on Monday when we got finished playing on Sunday
night at whatever time it was eight thirty, And it's
not in today's paper because I got it.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
So you know.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
That that's disturbing. It's not not right. It's not how
you treat the number four team in the country. But
I promise you the first time we stub our toe,
when we get upset, that's'll be on the front page.
But it's you know, it is what it is, y'all.
I've been fighting it since i've been here. It's not
the first time we hadn't been in the paper and
(06:04):
so but if it is in the paper and there's
one hundred thousand subscribers to a paper paper, not online.
Like my fans are the blue hairs and no airs
and the gray hairs, they ain't reading online.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
But it is what it is, y'all.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
I can't worry about the things I can't control, but
I will say my kids deserve better. We do have
generational players on our team, you know. I think you
you know, It's like when I had Victoria Vivian's at
Mississippi State. I tried to tell those fans you better
get here and watch her while you can, because there's.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Not many of those that roll around.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
And now we've got players like Madison Booker, you know,
Rory Harmon. There's not a whole lot of teams across
the country, y'all that can can start two guards like that.
And I'm not trying to short change anybody else on
my team. We got really good players. But I just
you know, again, I always say this, if I can
(07:07):
get you to my game one time, you'll come back.
And it was great to see that opening night crowd.
I was so proud of that crowd for our opening
night against Simo. And again, that's part of building a program.
It's not just X's and O's and wins and losses.
I mean, it's just it's not. And that's why I
(07:30):
need you guys so badly.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Like I.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Can't tell you how important you all are to our program,
not just in helping build our program and put people
in seats, but promoting my kids.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
And again, if I don't fight for them, who's gonna
do it?
Speaker 3 (07:50):
If you guys don't write about them, If you guys
aren't talking about them on TV.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
Who's gonna do it?
Speaker 3 (07:58):
And so it's just I'm at your mercy, but I
shouldn't be. You guys have been around that. I look
at this panel and you guys have been around the block.
Jeff Young him and Zach are probably the two youngest
dudes on here. Like, you guys know the importance of
what you do and how you do it for us
(08:18):
and these kids, and it's so important. You know, it's
hard to cut out a newspaper article and send it
to a recruit winner ain't one.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
So so let me follow up on that, going back
to what Brian kind of alluded to. And I didn't
mean to throw my fellow cards.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
And I'm not I'm not throwing them either. I'm just
making a statement.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
But so and again I'm not terry.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
Pardon go ahead, but we got other people we need
to get to as well.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Okay, and could it be you know Ketland's known for
those three point shots. I mean, that's what it drew everybody.
So going back to what Brian was talking about, maybe
you do have somebody who can hit three pointers that
draw you. People love that, the Curry effect, you know
what I'm saying. And so anyway, I don't I didn't
mean to create.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Oh it's all right. I mean I don't have that
three I don't have that person. Nobody does.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
But what I do have is another a different kind
of player, a different style of player.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Again. Really, you know, again a lot not many people have,
you know.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Just to start at those two spots what we have,
and then you know we've got we've got some size,
and of course we're pretty athletic. So again I just
think I'm at the mercy of you guys so so
much to help me spread the word about my team.
And when I get home and I don't see it.
(09:51):
It is frustrating. I don't whether you agree or not,
it's any coach worth their salt is going to want
He's gonna want that coverage and want that support for
his kids.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
I mean, these kids deserve it, man. They work really hard.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
And we're in a big community here in Austin, and
so anyway, that's that's where we're at.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
Hey, as we all know, when Vic gets going, he
can get going. We're gonna hear some more from Vic
Shaffer coming up next hour. We uh will be back
to wrap up our number two here on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
