Speaker 1 (00:00):
Before we get into talking about the high school playoffs,
how about your thoughts overall with things in the Lone
Star State. We've seen coaching changes made, We've seen abling
Christian go into their first FCS playoffs that's going to happen,
and UIW winning as well, and things like that, and
(00:20):
then of course all roads I don't often say this
tip all roads are leading toward college station All roads
coming up a week from this weekend with this restoration
of the Lone Star Showdown. Can you imagine the possibility
if you have Texas and Texas A and M each
with one loss tie the top the SEC race like
(00:43):
they are right now going into the final Saturday night
of the regular season. What that means and how it
turns the SEC on its collective head.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
I think it's important to remember that not that long ago,
the state of Texas was I would say, relatively down
from a college football perspective. I mean, we were having
a scrap and claw and talk about, oh boy, Sam
Houston's doing stuff at FCS, and oh keep an eye
on Division two. We've got a quarter finalists. You know,
(01:13):
it used to be that it was kind of slim
pickens as far as like, you know, real contenders are concerns,
but in twenty twenty four it has been like an
embarrassment of riches as far as college football is concerned
at basically every level. You know, the Division III level
with Harden Simmons and Mary Hard and Baylor. You know,
Division two is cooking as well, a number of teams
(01:35):
in the Division two playoffs in cleaning Angelo State, and
then you've got FCS ranking. You know, it's a good
year in SCS and of course at the FBS level
as you mentioned, and not just you know, obviously you've
got what's going on with A and M in Texas
kind of careening towards one another in what could be
a you know, a showdown for the ages of two
(01:56):
programs that obviously know each other extremely well, and our
think looking forward to an opportunity to reconvene in college station.
But also what's going on with SMU with an opportunity
to win the ACC looking good there, and you know,
kind of a wide open Big twelve with a number
of contenders, maybe some you know, maybe some outside shots
(02:17):
here in the state of Texas. A resurgent Baylor program,
which is not something we thought we would be saying,
I would say overall, like if you were giving a
State of the Union for the State of Texas, I
think that the state of the Union is very strong,
and it's the strongest it's been collectively and holistically in
the State of Texas in quite some time at every level.
(02:39):
And that's exciting for us here because we cover it
from tip to tail, and it's exciting I think for
the state that that takes a lot of pride. In
college but in football in general, especially in the college
football ranks. It's a really good time to be a
college football fan in the state.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Of Texas, no question about that.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Greg Tepper, managing ed or Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine
joining us.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Okay, let's jump to the high school Footall playoffs.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
The thing that caught your eye the most in Round
one of the playoffs last week was fill in the blank.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Just stunners. I mean, it's not always that you get
a first round of the playoffs that are filled with
that are filled with with upsets, but you had some seismic,
seismic upsets across the state of Texas. I mean I
counted it up and according to the computer from from
Jerry Forrest. I mean there were twenty teams that pulled
(03:30):
double digit upsets. I mean you had, I mean Fort
Ben Elkins over Alvin Shadow Creek is one of the
biggest upsets in the last twenty years. A plane is simple.
I mean, this is a Shadow Creek team that looked
like it was at the very least the chief challenger
to Summer Creek in sixth A Division two, Region three,
and then suddenly they get up ended by an upstart
(03:51):
fourth place four Bend Elkins team. You had that on
the other side of four Bend IOC. You had kind
of their one of their flagship programs in High Tower
go down to Manvil. It was you know, Alvin on
Fort Ben Crime once again. And then you've got all
like a number of other things that really shook things up.
You had a number of fourth place teams. It's the
playoffs and or you know, not just making the playoffs,
(04:13):
but advance to the second round. And that sets up
what's really interesting as far as conversations about you know,
it's every year you hear people complaining all too many
teams make the playoffs, is it's watered down. You give
them an opportunity to play and sometimes they surprise you.
I mean Van Vleck over Blanco is a bracketbuster in
three A Division two. I mean, Blanco looked like a
team that could win Reagion four, and suddenly they're out
(04:35):
in the first round of the playoffs and Van Vleck
wins their first playoff game since twenty eighteen. I mean,
just huge upsets across the state of Taxes. Now, that's
not to say that there weren't blowouts. Certainly there were
some seventy burgers, some eighty burgers. There was a nine
by Burger out there. Certainly those things happened. But I
would contend to you that I think that we had
(04:55):
overall an extremely exciting first round of the Taxi High
School Football Playoff. And you also had a couple of
teams that I think the best way to say is
maybe they got away with one. They played maybe a
first half or a second half that wasn't necessarily up
to their standard, but then they came out and won
cop Hell's. For example, cop Hell took on Prosper down
(05:16):
twenty one to seven at halftime, they roared back in
the second half win North Crowley. Another one tied at
halftime against Byron Nelson, and suddenly they roared back in
the second half. I've made the point on our site
this week about how I think that the time for
you to get your feet wet is now over that
now that you advanced the area around, if you lay
(05:38):
a clunker in the first half of a game, you're
probably you know, airing up basketballs on Monday. So kind
of the margin for error for these teams has been removed,
and that's what makes kind of all of the intensity
moving forward in these one hundred and seventy six games
all the more interesting.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Visiting with Greg Tapper Baditching ed or Dave Campbell's Texas
Football magazine here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zent. Okay,
let me, I'm gonna do things a little different. I'm
going to scroll through regions in these playoff classifications and
just ask for what leaps off the page of For example,
six AD one, You've got a dec Permian in North Crowley,
you have copp Ellen Lake Highlands, you have Midland Legacy
(06:13):
and EULAs, Trinity and Alan and Richardson.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Most compelling out of those, Uh, I.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Don't know, maybe none of the involved. That feels pretty
if you're talking about a region that feels relatively chalky,
feels like we know what we're getting. I would like
to see what Odessa Permian's got left in the tank.
But I think that North Crowley probably woke up last
week and they've probably got to be your favorite. This
Region one looks Region one. This kind of feels like
(06:42):
the week before the week there in Region one.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
All right.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Region two duncan Mill, Rockwall, the Woodland, sy Ranch, North
Forty Waksahatchie, and Conroe and Bridgeland.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
I'm really interested in Conrad and Bridgeland. I think that
that is a really interesting ball game down there in
the Houston area. Two teams that I think are playing
really well. And then if you're rock Wall, you know
you're taking on Duncanville. Duncanville I think at this point
needs no introduction, but I will just say this, like
get crazy guy in to fight with him, you know,
like like see if you can just turn this into
a wild shootout. Uh, that's probably your best opportunity for
(07:15):
a little bit of chaos. And I also think walks
out to north Ward is going to be interesting as well.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Region three Side Falls, Katie Ridge Point, north Shore, Houston,
Full Parolanta Task Casita Chalk.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Ridge Point, ridge Point, north Shore's box Office. It might
be the game of the week. H It's a great game.
And for ridge Point this is a this is an
opportunity to go out there and and and and kind
of establish yourself in that upper epchelon of Houston area teams.
This is a team that I think has the the guys,
just the dudes to go out there and hang with
north Shore. The question is going to be can they
(07:49):
find a way past what's been an exceptional defense for
north Shore. I think that is the one of the
games of the week across the state at TECHS.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
All right, So to extend that line of thinking further,
is Region three in six a Division one, the toughest
region regardless of classification and division. Think about this, Uh,
let's say they win this. This box Office came a bridgepoint.
Now you're probably looking at Katie. You win that, then
you're probably looking either at a rematch with the task
of Seeder or fools here in the quarterfinals.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
No, Region three's loaded and it is you know, once Katie,
Katie kind of can go either way as far as
Division one or Division two. Once they piled into Division one,
it really became probably, uh, there's a couple of others,
maybe like three A Division one Region three kind of
brings to mind as far as real heavy hitting, a
(08:38):
ton of contenders, But yeah, look six A Division one
Region three, as it has been in the past couple
of years, it feels like the real blockbuster region at
least at six.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
I And then for folks with these parts in region before,
you got Lake Travis against San Antonio, Johnson, East Central
against Westlico, Westlake against Brennan.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
But to Johnson against Los Fresno's.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Look Westlake and Brennan's interesting. Okay, a good Brennan team,
but it's I guess I can't really. I don't know
if people down there in your neck of the woods
understand just how much of a thorn in the side
y'all are to San Antonio. I mean, listen, they are
so tired of getting beat by Austin, plain and simple,
(09:18):
because it happened for the past decade basically, and especially
west Lake in Lake Travis is an opportunity with Brennan
and Johnson to go out there and kind of reclaim
one for the for the Alamo City. I'm not sure
it happens. Those are those are the biggest games. Although
I will stay by the way you to Jonathan and
Lilis Fresdos is fun. That is a Saturday afternoon affair
at the Alamodome to high power offenses on a fast track.
(09:42):
I think that game is gonna be point C.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Let me jump to.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
A game that certainly is gonna have your attention because
you're gonna be on the call as you work with
Gary Reasons Friday Night Brennan and Liberty Hill read the
field in Slugerville.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
How about your breakdown on that one.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
Yeah, it's Bob. I'm really excited to be on the call,
you know for Liberty Hill. You know what you're getting.
They're gonna run that slot tea. They are banged up
as heck though, I mean they they are. We were
talking earlier with the head coach there, Kent Walker, and
he mentioned I think they've got eleven guys who have
had at least ten carries this year, and he and
(10:19):
almost none of it is by design, you know, it's
just because Okay, one guy goes down, you gotta pick
up another. One guy, another guy goes down, got to
pick up another. But that slot team just keeps on rolling.
The offense has been terrific. Their defense is going to
get a real test this week against Jacoby Dixon, the
superstar sophomore running back for Brenham. They've got a fantastic
quarterback as well. I'm really interested to see. Basically, I
(10:41):
think for Liberty Hill, can they dictate the terms of
engagement here, go on those long sustained drives and keep
the ball away from Brenham. This is an explosive Brenham
team and so I think a lot of this ultimate look.
Every Liberty Hill game comes down to the same thing,
which is can you diagnose and slow down the slot tea?
If you can, you got a great chance to and
if you don't, then you're gonna look silly by giving
(11:02):
a five hundred yards rushing like that's the that's the
name of the ball game. And I'm fascinated to see
it play out. Two great coaches and Danny Young's and
Kent Walker and a spot playing for Thanksgiving on the line.
It's gonna be a lot of fun, and I think
there's an opportunity that it gets it gets a little
point c because I think both these offenses are playing
at an extremely high level. I think we're I think we're
(11:22):
in for a really good one on Friday.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
All right, And finally I was going to get to it,
and you brought it up anyway, So I'm glad. And
that's three a D one Region three where you got Palestine, Westwood, Columbus, Fairfield, Yoakum, Franklin,
die Ball, and Hitchcock Tigue where I just see Hitchcock
and Franklin and obviously the winner of this Westwood Columbus
gang being the main players here.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
Absolutely, Yeah, Hitchcock's a little bit banged up. We don't
know what the status of a number of their players are.
That's a big question this one. Franklin, I think the
quietest four time four constsutive state focalists in America has
just kind of been rolling along. But they The game
that's going to catch everybody's attention this week is Palestine
Westwood and Columbus. Matt step on our podcast this week
(12:06):
said that he thinks it's the best quarterback matchup in
the state this week, and I'm kind of inclined to
agree with him. Kavian Bryant, if you have not seen him,
the unbelievable sophomore for Palistine Westwood. He is terrific going
up against Adam Shobel, the TCU commit who has been
so good for them. I think it's going to be
a high scoring affair in that one. And yeah, I
think that the winner of that game probably has a
date down the road with Franklin, and that's going to
(12:29):
be really really interesting because it's the Franklin team that again,
I think flying under the radar, which is not something
Mark Fanns team has done in the past couple of years,
but they've got an opportunity to make it five consecutive
trips to AT and T Stadium.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
He's Greg Temper, managing editor at Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine,
co host along with Aaron Hartigan and whenever I can
get back.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
In the studio with him, they're on the.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Scoreboard Live and you'll be on the call with Gary
Reasons Friday night. There you'll see it on your local
fan duel outlet. There to see that matchup between lib
Hill YEP playing back on television again and Brenham.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Hey, I appreciate the time, enjoy that this week.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
I'm excited, pyl All right.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Take care.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
That's Greg Tepper managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Well,
I'm more coming up on sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone,
