Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrew Zimmeol filling
in for one Craig Way as Craig is in Brooklyn,
New York. Brooklyn would go hard. Craig Way joins the show. Now,
Craig Texas men's basketball went hard yesterday a big win
against Syracuse.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, and got out for the big lead. They were
up sixteen in the first half and early in the
second half and missed some shots. Syracuse got hot, came
all the way back, actually took their first lead, even
the team in a second anthet a couple of one
point leads, and then the Longrns did what they had
to do. They closed out down the stretch. And for
a freshman like Trey Johnson, who it looked like it

(00:40):
was coming so easy to him before this game last night,
it was really struggling from the field. He was super
touchdown the stretch, made six out of six free throws
from the foul line. That to go with Arthur Kluma's
double double, his second as a long Worn and they
did a good job to be able to pull away,
to eat a way to get that win. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
No, the trade Johnson storyline this year. Craig is something
that everybody's gonna want to talk about all year long.
And the fact that the lights were bright. He struggled early,
but to come back the way that they did, and
for him to come back mentally, to take that deep
breath and hit those free throws, that is huge. That
tells me a lot about the type of player he's
going to be.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, he didn't let the fact that he was missing
shots affect him on the defensive end, which is a
pretty common occurrence, especially with freshman But as we were
talking about yesterday, he really likes to guard people and
he worked really hard on the defensive side. And then
you could tell Syracuse wanted to foul him. He had
missed one free throw in the first app but only one.

(01:43):
He just missed a lot of shots from the field,
and you could tell they really wanted to foul him.
And as Rodney Kerry told us on the post game,
he said, we were fine with that, and sure enough
they got the ball in his hand and then he
made all six free throws down the stretch, So they've
got plenty of confidence him and Rodney even said at
the post game, I'll look for Trey to have a
big game tomorrow. Night he said that would a laugh.

(02:04):
So we'll see. But I think it also shows that
they could, excuse me, get plenty of contributions from players
not named Trey Johnson win Trey struggles from the corps.
I mentioned Klumba's double double. Kendall Weaver had ten points,
nine of those in the second half and added nine rebounds.

(02:24):
Pretty good for a guard he can elevate. Yeah, so
I think that was important. Kayton Shedrick had some moments,
Derek Onyema off the bench, so they got They got
several guys to chip in and they're gonna need that
throughout the course of the season.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Let's talk about Mark. He got his first bucket. We
played the call earlier in the show Crag. We knew
it was kind of a game time decision, but man,
it was good to see him out there get those
nineteen minutes.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, and you know, Tremon Mark get two threes early
in the game and then not as much after. But
I think also Robby was looking at different commindations trying
to make sure that they didn't, you know, grind him
too much coming off that ankle injury. But he came
out of it well. I think we'll see him play

(03:10):
probably some more minutes tonight and and some of this also,
Andrew's going to depend on foul difficulty with guys, you know,
as arik on Yama got ten first half minutes, which
is not real common for him. He got that because
of the two early fouls on Cayden Shedrick, and he
got pretty worn down there late in the first half.
Mark will have some time again coming off the bench.

(03:31):
They like the big freshman Jamie Benson. Gives him a
few minutes as well. Even Nick Cody got his first
action out there for a few minutes on the floor.
They want to get some more with him against this
Saint Joe's team. They're going to be playing the team
that has a couple of big guys in their center.
Justice Ajibor, who's who's the center, he's six ten, and

(03:52):
Rasher Fleming is a six ' nine forward who loves
to shoot three pointer. He shoots forty five percent beyond
the arc. So they have to match with those guys
as well as what the guards want to do for
the heart.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
It's almost like you do this for a living, because
you beat me to my segue. Craig I was going
to start talking about tonight's game, I will say, to
eight guys in double figure minutes or eight guys in
double figure points, which one's more impressive to you? Now,
that didn't happen last night, But what would you prefer
to see? Eight guys who can contribute big minutes or
eight guys that are contributing points?

Speaker 2 (04:23):
You mean protectas. Yes, well, you'll take the points anytime
you can get them, for sure, But I do think
it speaks to the depth of the team when you
can have that. So especially Andrew, when you got the
back to back. This is their first back to back
of the season. And of course, obviously when you get
in the tournament play, you have to deal with that.

(04:45):
Here's an interesting fact. The Long Words have not won
an n season tournament since the pandemic twenty twenty when
they were in the Malli Invitational. But if you looked around,
it didn't look much like now. He was in Ashville,
North Carolina during the pandemic and Texas won the ball
game to be days in Indiana and North Carolina to

(05:07):
win that event. And they're going back to the MALLI
next year, really and truly going to Bali this time
next year. But they that's the last time they won
an end season tournament, so they have a chance to
do that tonight.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
I was going to say, that's almost like if I
had like the Paris Invitational in Paris, Texas, Craig, It's
it's not Maui, but it's the next best thing. It's
North Carolina.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, it's not bad and Asheel's beautiful and hopefully they
recover with a horrific flooding that happened a hurricane and
they're still rebuilding up there. But that's a wonderful town.
It kind of it would remind you of Austin about
twenty thirty years ago. It has kind of tucked away
in the mountains. It's a beautiful city. Hopefully they can
get that thing back on track now.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Funny enough, and maybe I'm wrong here, but it says
the last time that Texas and Saint Joseph's played was
in the Mallai in two thousand and eight.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Does that sound about right to you?

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Yep, yep it was. And just like then, last night,
I sat next to Joey Brackets himself, Joe Lenardi, the
man who does the bracketology for ESPN. He is the
radio analyst for Saint Joe's and we were sitting inside
one another last night while the game was going on,
and you know, while he was, you know, watching our game.

(06:24):
And then and then I was there for the first
half of their game against Texas Tech. And that game,
by the way, Andrew, was a lot like the Texas game.
Saint Joe's got out to the afore mentioned sixteen point
first half lead, had it sixteen early in the second half,
and then hit a dry spell. Tech got hot, came back,

(06:46):
actually took a one point lead, and then Saint Joe's
made some key buckets down the stretch and Tech missed
a pretty short range jumper that would have won it
for him. So there will be no Texas versus Texas
Tech games since the Red Raiders that didn't come up
with a win. So it's going to be Texas against
Saint Joe's. But yes, you're right, it'll be the first

(07:07):
time in sixteen years that they will have met. The
last time was in the two thousand and eight nowI Invitational.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Andrews will filling on the Craig Way Show. Craig Way
his name on the Z on the show on the
phone with us Craig I was talking about this game
yesterday with you. I was saying, I really hope that
it was going to be Tech versus Texas. Do I
need to put more respect on Saint Joseph's name? Is
that what this comes down to that I wasn't familiar
with how good they are.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Well they're good, and you know that's what's called Big
Five Basketball, the five schools there in Philadelphia, you know,
with Penn and LaSalle and Villanova, you know, Direcchoel's in there.
They've got They've got several good teams and programs there
in the city of Philadelphia, and a lot of times
they'll play at the Palester and have the big crowds there.

(07:56):
So it's a cool deal. And St. Joseph's had some
really good teams in the past. Of course, we all
know Jamiir and Nelson who played the NBA all those years.
He was the point guard for that great Saint Josephine
that Phil Martelly had that got to the Elite ate
a few years ago. So you know, it's one of

(08:16):
those tradition leaden basketball programs. And it's still early days,
early in the season. I think teams are still trying
to find their way. Listen, the Walk Warns are still playing.
There are three men down right now, and they've got
three guys who have not been able to go because
because of injury as a result that happened in the
fact that they were unable to get Jason Kennell on

(08:38):
the floor. He injured a risk in last Saturday's win
over Mississippi Valley State. They're still trying to bring Nick
Cody along Malik Presley, the kid from San Marcus that
transferre him from Vantal. They've got guys banged up right now,
and I think some teams are going through some of
that as well across the country.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Eight pm.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Pregame right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone
and on the Long Warn Radio network as well. All Right, Craig,
it's a game that we have certing on the calendar
for the Saturday. It's Kentucky versus Texas. I want to
talk about you though the next twenty four hours for
you got to be kind of a world win, right,
call this game and come back do the Long Warn game.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Yeah, you know, one of those you get on the
plane and you come home, you know that kind of
thing I was referring to you know, kind of blocking
out the fact you get a little tired coming in.
I'm looking forward to being in the stadium tomorrow to
call them the game Senior Day. There'll be a lot
of seniors and some who aren't necessarily seniors academically, but

(09:41):
who may be playing their final game as Texas. Long words, anyway,
it's a special day for them, and and sarc has
talked about that this week. He got a little emotional
during the week with the team. He plans to be
You're gonna try, You're gonna try to be a little
bit more stoic tomorrow when those guys come out. He
wants his guys to enjoy the moment. This is a

(10:02):
real interesting dynamic allways. And I remember talking about it
with Mac Brown and other coaches that you want the
guys to appreciate the moment. You also don't want it
to consume them emotionally to the point that they can't
function on the field, because the end result of this
is the bottom line, and Stark mentioned this on the

(10:24):
Zoom yesterday, is the best way they can honor the underclassmen,
can honor the seniors is for them to play well
and for the seniors to play well and for them
to win, to have a big day because as we know,
they need to keep winning. They really I think need
to win the next two games to lock themselves into

(10:46):
a playoff spot. Then you take your chances in Atlanta,
try to win an SEC championship, and if you do that,
you get a first round by for the playoffs. So
there's you know, there's goals still out there. The stated
goal of this team from the starts to win the
SEC Championship, and that goal is still in front of them.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
Which you got to admit high bar for year one
of the SEC that they might clear, which is absolutely incredible.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
We do a lot of predictions on sports talk radio.
I'm not going to ask you to make a prediction here, Craig,
I will ask you to do this. What is your
favorite Senior Day memory from calling these games? What do
you remember the most?

Speaker 2 (11:24):
I just remember, you know, there there were days there
were games when see we didn't know, you know, five
that it was going to be Vin Chunks final light
and so he didn't actually even go through senior Day,
uh you know, uh celebration and all that sort. So
we did know that was going to be the case.
For col McCoy in two thousand and nine, and I

(11:44):
think about that and that was a big day for him.
But again then as in as now, the way that
it was set up, Andrew, is you had to keep
winning the long warns knew uh that in the BC
what they were going to have to do is win
the game over Texas A and M, which they did,

(12:06):
and then they were going to have to win the
Big Golf Championship, which they did by the narrowest of margins.
You know when they when they barely beat Nebraska, but
they beat them to get to the National Championship game.
It's the same thing with this group. They know that
they know what's in front of them, and yeah, it'll
be a special day, but you know they they know

(12:26):
what they have to do to take their business. And
you didn't ask me this, Andrew, but I'm going to
tell you anyway, if you're asking me, I'd rather have
the buy.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
Oh yeah, that's perfect, Okay, I agree.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
I'd rather Yeah, I would. And you know why, it's
one less game you have to win. Listen, whoever they
if there's a couple of things in play here, when
when they're when people who are examining this, saying, hey, look,
you know you can play you know, go ahead and
get in a rhythm and you play that matchup, and

(13:02):
then you're going, well, that game is no guarantee even
if you're the five seed. Remember, the five seed is
going to play the twelve seed, and you have no
control over whether you're a going to be the five
seed because automatic conference champions could knock you down below that,
making it a more difficult first round matchup. So there's that,

(13:24):
and then and then you don't know who that twelve
is going to be. I mean, does anybody want play
Boys State right now? I don't know. It looks pretty
good against Oregon, so that it's one less game you
have to win, okay, because then he you know, I
know they was talking about getting into a rhythm and
all that, but it's another four week grind. So that's right.

(13:46):
And I was all for a playoff expansion. I'm for
expanding at the sixteen. I'm all of that. You know,
the high school kids play sixteen games andrew in the
state of Texas to win a state title, you know,
so you can do that.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
High school kids aren't facing Georgia, then A and M
and then Alburn and Alabama and LSU, and then having
to go play the best teams in the country after that.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
That's why I don't want to expand it.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
They also don't have They also don't have two or
three buys during the course of the season two, So
I mean you have to look at it from all angle.
Same thing with the FCS playoffs. FCS college guys, they're
having to go through it. Same thing in Division two,
same thing in Division three. You're gonna tell me that
Division III college kid not on scholarship can't grind for

(14:33):
fifteen or six or KI is able to grind for
fifteen or sixteen weeks, and a D one kid with
nil money coming in and everything that's going on, you're
gonna tell me he can't handle it. Of course he can,
of course he can. It's just the college football landscape
wasn't used to it in the past, where they're gonna
get used to it this year and everybody's gonna love it.

Speaker 3 (14:52):
There's a reason I call him a legend. It's Craig Way.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
Craig, thank you for letting me fill in your shoes
this last couple of days. Have a good call tonight
and We'll see you when.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
You get back.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Okay, Hey, I appreciate you and Ronald, and we'll look
forward to a holiday week next week. We'll be back
to the house on Monday.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
I love it all right.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
That is craig Way's names on the show, the voice
of Longhorns, Andrews I will filling in for craig Way
when we come back. We will continue the conversation about
college football, new commits, and one team got a whole
lot better. We'll tell you about it next on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
