Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrews that we'll
filling in for Craig Way as Craig is in Brooklyn
as right as the Texas Longhorns get ready to take
on Saint Joseph tonight eight thirty pm, Tip, eight pm
pregame right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Well,
the college football slate this weekend is jam packed with
(00:22):
impactful games. You have Old Miss in Florida, SMU and Virginia,
Massachusetts and Georgia, right, and of course Kentucky and Texas.
We all care about that game. And then I'm gonna
have one eye on how Texas A and M and
Auburn do. We're rooting for a war Eagle, right, That's right.
So the game that I care the most about this weekend, though,
(00:44):
outside of Texas Kentucky game because we have to, you know,
put the hand in the bar and get the job done,
win one game at a time, one to no, that's
the standard. The game I care the most about is
Indiana versus Ohio State. And you wouldn't have thought it
at the beginning of the year that this game would
have meant this much. It is the best season that
(01:05):
Indiana has had since nineteen sixty seven, when they finished
nine to two and shared a Big Ten title with
Purdue and Minnesota. Those are two teams you haven't thought
about in a while. Right Since then, they have not
sniffed a conference title. Now, Ohio State is doing exactly
(01:25):
what they were expected to do, which is win games,
not and one. The only loss coming out a one
point loss to Oregon. If Indiana beats Ohio State tomorrow
eleven am, kickoff on Fox. If Indiana beats Ohio State tomorrow,
the only naturally ranked team that's scheduled this year, it
(01:45):
closes this and closes the season against Purdue, they will
get to play Oregon in the conference Championship. The Big
Ten Conference Championship, which was invented like a decade ago
twenty eleven. Organs already clinched the spot. They already are
in their conference title game. If the Ohio State wins out,
(02:06):
they'll return of the Conference Saddle game for the first
time since the pandemic shortened season in twenty twenty, where
they will get to play Oregon as well. Ohio State
a twenty eight game winning streak against Indiana dating back
to nineteen ninety one. The buck guys get to host
this game and they are eleven point favorites at home.
(02:27):
Will Howard twenty four touchdowns, five interceptions this season. But
boy do I root hard for the Hoosiers this game.
And it's not so much for the players on the field.
They've been fun to watch. Indiana's had a couple of
fun games this season, but I am rooting for their
head coach. This is Kurt Signeki. Okay Sgeki has been
(02:52):
one of those guys this season that you wanted to
keep an eye on. He came from He came from
a long a long line of good coaching. Started his
career at IUP, goes to James Madison, competes for an
FCS title there, and since taking over Indiana has been
(03:17):
a lightning rod. This is This is him from media
day earlier this year. This is cut nineteen.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
You know, normally at these things, I stand up here
and we're picked to win the league. It's just usually
how it's been. I have been picked next to last twice,
which we're picked seventeenth out of an eighteen team leg
and I get it. Just the two times we're picked
next last in twenty twenty two, we won the conference championship.
(03:49):
And in twenty seventeen we inherited an eight and forty
five team and won eight in a row and played
jam you the last game of the year for the
conference championship. Now, I'm not into making predictions. That's just
a historical fact. Okay. So I know you guys been
waiting for me to say something crazy that wasn't quite crazy.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
So he has just signed a new contract as well.
It's an eight year deal, eight million dollars a year,
and he makes him one of the richest coaches in
college football. This is him on Big newon Kickoff talking
about his new contract last week.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
What were some of the important elements that you wanted
included in that extension? Well, you know, honestly, they came
to me. They were very proactive. And you know, some
people say, well, you know, why would you do that
when you know this one may open, that one may open,
you know, and you're gonna be a hot commodity and
blah blah blah. And the fact of the matter is
(04:52):
we're the emerging superpower in college football?
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Why would I leave? So he says that a little
tongue in cheek right. You hear him laughing at being
we're emerging superpower, because Indiana has not been a superpower
historically speaking. They are not the school that you think
of in the Big Ten to compete for titles. In fact,
you could go out on a limb here and say
they are like Purdue in a lot of ways, perdue
(05:17):
the Boilermakers. Good football program, but not nationally recognized as
a team that could win a national title.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Right.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
They are, by all accounts a basketball school that has
not been What Kurtzeneki has been telling guys this is
he has come in and immediately revitalize the program. And
this is what's great about college football. We always talk
about the parody of the NFL, and oh, you know,
(05:45):
it only takes two or three years for your team
to get good again and through the draft. College football
changes like that. It's on a dime. How quickly your
alma mater can change things up. I think about me
locally here in Tech.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
GJ.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Kenny comes into Texas State after the amount of losses
that the Bobcats had faced. I didn't know if I
could ever love again. I didn't know if I could
ever have a head coach like that that could turn
things around. And look, he's already signed a new contract
all the way through twenty thirty one. He gets a
seven year extension in San Marcus. The reason that these
(06:21):
guys matter is because they want to be there, right
They want to be there, and they can convey that
to the players. They can go bring in good talent.
In Indiana's case, they're gonna go out this weekend and
play an Ohio State team that I think has the
most unlikable head coach in college football, and that's Ryan Day.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Like I like to know where lou Holtz is right now.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
That guy Ryan Day, who's trying to fight lou Holtz,
the old man that's from last year's win against Notre Dame.
Lou Holts had some mean things to say about his
Ohio State Buckeye. So Ryan Day the big strong man
coming after him. But Dan Mullen, who is a good
head coach with a very good head coach in the SEC,
he was on fine Bomb yesterday talking about Indiana and
(07:07):
this game.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Give Indiana credit. They're undefeated. They won every game by
four king points or more. That's a pretty dominating thing
to do, and it's hard to come out and play
and perform at that level every single week. And I
know the schedule hasn't been very difficult. They'll get tested
against Ohio State. But I'll give you my breakdown moment.
Everyone says, if Indiana loses and they they don't play well,
they should be thrown out of the playoffs. Well, let's
(07:30):
flip it. Does that mean if Indiana wins, Ohio State
should be thrown out of the playoffs, because now we
might have Now we might have.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
A big discussion of yeah, yeah, exactly. You go tell
an Ohio State Buckeye fan that that if they lose
this weekend with two losses, that they should get bumped
out of the college football playoffs. But along with them,
Penn State shouldn't be in the top five either. But
that's neither here nor there. We need to get both
of them out of there. You look at the way
that the Big Ten has been set up Oregon, Ohio State, State, Indiana.
(08:01):
Four of the top five teams in the last ranking
were teams from the Big Ten. That cannot stand. That
has to change. Texas gets the job done this weekend.
Indiana gets the job done this weekend. You're looking at
a top three that's going to be Oregon Texas Indiana,
and then Oregon and Indiana are going to play each other,
(08:22):
and then you have two teams, and let's go Indiana Hoosiers.
That is who we're rooting for. If you can't root,
if you have to root for a team to win
some games, why not the little basketball school with the
head coach who could. When we come back, we'll wrap
up the Craig Ways Show and we'll give you an
insight on who is going to get upset this weekend.
(08:45):
Next it's Andrew Zimmol filling in for Craig Way and
