Speaker 1 (00:00):
Texas, Texas A and M week. It's underway Haggie's and
Longhorns this week. It'll be Friday, and we'll have it
for you on the Zone with our Longhorns game day
coverage beginning at.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Three thirty words.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
That you guys are going to be again Thomson Hotel. Yeah,
the Thompson Hotel downtown Cool. Its going to be a
fantastic spot. So that's a neat place if you're going
down the college station and not spending over one thousand
dollars on a ticket. You want to save somebody came
out to Thompson Hotel. We'll have our pregame spot there
and then we're going to hang there and watch the game.
I believe there's a nice rooftop bar and big screen TV,
(00:42):
some excellent food. So we are looking forward to it. Yeah,
classy way of the close out, a very classy season
to the Longhorns.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Yeah, absolutely, and we'll see where the season leads beyond Saturday,
hopefully to Atlanta the next stop. But winning would send
them there, Losing would not send them to Atlanta. Might
still get in the playoff, but you but the control
is out of your own destiny and That's one thing
(01:10):
we talked about is these teams who lost control of
their destiny by losing of the weekend.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Alabama did not have one hundred percent control of its
own destiny, but had the Crimson Tide one out, there
was a real chance that they could be in position
to control their own destiny with a win in the
Iron Bowl over Auburn this week to play Texas or Texas,
(01:42):
A and M, perhaps in the SEC Championship that went away.
Ole Miss had an outside chance to land in the
SEC Championship that's gone. Tennessee had an outside chance to
land in the SEC Championship game that's gone. Not because
of anything they did on the field. They beat UMass,
It wasn't that. It was because of both A and
(02:02):
M and Alabama losing. They needed Alabama when they needed
to be in a tie break with Alabama as well
as you know, because they'd led the loss to Georgia,
but they had the win of Obama, who had the
win of a Georgia who had the win over Tennessee.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
You get where I'm going with that.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
So now it's pretty clear what's going to happen in
the SEC. The winter in College Station Saturday Night will
play the Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta the following Saturday afternoon
at three. If Texas A and M loses at four losses,
they're definitely out of any playoff consideration. Texas loss, while
(02:40):
not eliminating Texas from playoff consideration, certainly removes the control
from their own destiny. And then they're looking at other
things going on across the country, you know, like a
red hot Notre Dame and then SMU on the uptick.
There's even some folks go this far and they're thinking
about this because they start projecting ahead. And we've had
(03:01):
this conversation before that if the Longhorns, let's say they
win the SEC, say they do that, or even if
they get into the playoff but not win the SEC,
said they defeat Texas A and M to get into
the SEC Championship but lose to Georgia, they're probably at
(03:22):
that point. I think if beating A and M almost
locks them into the playoffs. So let's just say they
get in and they're in the seven to ten matchup
or whatever it is.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
There's or you know, eight nine or six and eleven
or whatever it is.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
There's speculation that I've seen and not just speculation. I've
seen it both with all the projections that I read,
that includes ESPN, it includes the Athletic, that includes CBS,
that includes Sporting News. I think I'll read like five
or six different projections, and they're pretty similar, but there's differences.
(03:59):
And every one of those are projecting Texas to reach
the SEC championship game and then lose the rebatch to Georgia.
So then they have Texas projecting in the playoff either
as a six seed or a seven seed or an
eight seed. And in three of or four of the
six projections that I read, they have a first round
(04:23):
matchup of Texas against SMU oh yeah, which would be here.
It would be in Austin if that were the case.
If if Texas wins the SEC, they get a bye
in the first round the playoffs, you get three weeks
off before they play in a bowl game, and it
(04:45):
would be in New Orleans almost certainly, all right. And
then I saw one set of projections that had Texas
winning their quarterfinal game in New Orleans getting to the semifinals. No,
this is something we've talked about last week. Oregon as
the number one seed or even if Ohio State beats
Oregon in a rematch and moves into the number one slot.
(05:09):
In either case Oregon or Ohio State. If you get
to the semifinals, then you go to geographically, what is
closer to your home base. Dallas is closer or Arlington
Cherry World is closer than Miami, So Oregon or Ohio State,
whichever one it is, would then be playing a semifinal
game at the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, whereas Texas would
(05:32):
go to Miami, where I've seen a couple of different projections.
One that has them playing Miami on their home field
at what is it hard Rock Stadium? The other one
has them playing SMU there in the semifinals. Can you
imagine Texas against SMU playing in Miami in the Orange
Bowl and Oregon or Ohio State whatever, and or Ohio State.
(05:59):
Maybe they wind up meeting in the semifinal round Ohio
State of five seed Oregon to one, and then whether
it be a quarterfinal, but anyway, if they wind up meeting,
that would be crazy. That's some of the difference in
the nuance and the craziness of the college football playoff
this year.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
But all you can do is to handle your own business.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
And if Texas handles its business this week, if they
are able to win the game in College Station, they
would advance the SEC Championship. At that point, you'd have
to consider them pretty much a lock to be in
the College Football Playoff. But then you can take it
one step further by winning the SEC Championship.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
They draw by.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
At that point, they get some rest, get some weeks off,
and then they just need to win three wins three
games to win the national title instead of four. So
those are some of the things that are out there
right now.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
I'm curious with the ACC, Craig, because the ap Powl,
there's three top twelve teams. You have, Miami, SMU, Clemson
all have lost one game the regular season. Clemson has
lost twice. So he plays at Syracuse they should win, yep.
SMU plays California, they should win yep, and that's.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
At home too, so cow one the big game they did.
Maybe Stanford didn't even need the Stanford band.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
So if we have Clemson or sorry, if we have
Miami SMU and the conference championship with the ACC in Charlotte,
will the loser get in.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
That's what the That's what the speculation is because that
would hurt a lot of the other like Indiana. Yeah,
that's what I was talking about last hour. But would
hurt Texas for sure if they would lose this week.
If they lose this week, absolutely it would. That's why
I said the control would be out of their hands.
Here's the thing that would be most damaging to any team,
(07:45):
not just Texas or Indiana, any team that's trying to
get in from the outside. You know, there are people
that are talk about South Carolina still with a shot. Yeah,
South Carolina, if they beat Clemson this week, it spikes them.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
They're sixty in the AP. Yeah, they do have three wins,
sorry three three losses. Three losses. And here's the other thing.
They lost Alabama, and Alabama has to be in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Right, It's not a hard and fast rule.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
But what could damage teams like Indiana, UH or maybe
a Texas if they were to lose. Whatever would be
if SMU and Miami playing the a SEC Championship game
and SMU wins, because now you're matching Miami's resume against
the others.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
So that's why I said it's out of your control.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
If they win, If Texas wins this week, They're going
in Atlanta on one loss. The most they would have
is two. And then if you figure in the ACC
Championship game Miami and s and U, somebody's going to
take another loss there, and you know you're going to
(09:01):
feel much better about things if Texas wins this week.
That's why I said if they win this week, to
say nothing of the rivalry and all that that entails,
but to win this week pretty much would lock them
into the playoff. Then you win two games, you win
the SEC title in your first year in the SEC,
and then you also wind up getting a buy in
(09:25):
the first round. And Sark reiterated it today. In fact,
I think you're going to hear it coming up in
this next segment, some more from him about the importance
of winning the Southeastern Conference title, not doing the Lane
Kiffen and let's just see when you get in and
not worry about the SEC title game. Like we said,
Lane didn't have worry about that anymore so, but Texas
(09:47):
can still control its own destiny, handle its business. We'll
hear more from Sark coming up on Sports Radio AM
thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app
