Speaker 1 (00:00):
Craig Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. Earlier in the program,
we visited with Andrew Monico, play by play voice of
the Texas A and m Maggie's I was in the
two o'clock hour. In the three o'clock hour, Greg Tepper,
managing enter Todave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, talked to college
football and in high school football. If you missed any
of that, you can go to our podcast page at
(00:21):
AM thirteen under the Zone dot com.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
You can do that.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Coming up, we'll hear from some long worn basketball players
and also some more from Vic Shaffer, Texas women's head coach.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Again.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
They're playing in Southwest Florida, the Gulf Coast Showcase. That's
down in Estero, Florida, which is basically Fort Myers is
where it is. Texas played in and won that event
I think twenty eighteen. I went down there six years ago.
They won that event down there. I'll tell you this,
this is how I know it's twenty eighteen.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Cam.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
They had a freshman on that team. Texas did red
shirting because of injury. You know who that freshman was.
Hit me with it, Sedona Prince. That's right from Liberty
Hill broke a leg. She ended up transferring Oregon and
now she's playing at TCU and playing well by the
way she and Haley van Lyth, who has been all
(01:16):
around in terms of her transfer. You know, it was
on that louisvill team.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
They have a lot of college basketball now, but it
feels like is their entire starting five transfers.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
They've got a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
The guy that came in has brought in a lot
of transfers, and their rank seventeenth in the country off
of that. College football notes. I don't know if you
heard it. Mac Brown was fired today by North Carolina.
The university announced he'll not return next season, and that
was one day after he declared his intentions to return.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Does that sound familiar to people?
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Sounds like Mac?
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Does that sound like twenty thirteen around here?
Speaker 1 (01:54):
But it was Bubba Cunningham, the ad who informed back
of the decision. He will coach the team in the
regular season finale against North Carolina State on Saturday, but
a decision has not yet been made about whether he
will coach the Tar Hills in the bowl game. I
remember that's what he did here. He was not discharged
(02:19):
after the bowl game or before the final game of
the regular season against Baylor, which if Texas had won
that game, they would have won the Big Twelve, but
they didn't. And then he had mentioned at the banquet
he was going to be back, and then he wasn't
back as the athletic director Steve.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Patterson let him go.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
And then then but he was allowed to coach their
final game, which was that Alamo Bowl lost to Oregon.
So he's going to coach the game against INNCIS State.
He doesn't, It's not yet known if he'll coach them
in the bowl game. His quote was, while this was
not the perfect time and way in which I imagine
(03:01):
going out, no time will ever be the perfect time.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
I've spent sixteen seasons.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
At North Carolina and will always cherish the memories and
relationships Sally and I have built while serving as head coach.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
We had a chance to coach.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
And men or some great young men, and we'll miss
have any opportunity to do that in the future. Moving forward,
my total focus is on helping these players and coaches
prepare for Saturday's game against NC State and give them
the best chance to win. We want to send these
seniors out right, and I hope our fans will show
up Saturday do the same. If you're wondering about Max
all time record one hundred and thirteen wins, seventy eight
(03:35):
losses and one time one thirteen to seventy eight, one
nine wins short of Nick Saban, by.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
The way, so with him being out of college football
at twenty twenty five, and of course there could be
some coaches hired. The only coaches, the only active coaches
with a national championship, are going to be what Kirby's
smart and who else? It'll be Kirby And that's it,
(04:01):
because right, just Kirby the only one? Or was is
there another one?
Speaker 2 (04:05):
I'm missing? I'm thinking thinking about this.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Because obviously Saban's retired. Oar Ball is in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Yeah, gene Chiswick is not a head coach anymore, not
a head coach.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Jimbo obviously not a head coach, right, Mac Brown not
coaching anymore? Yeah after this next season? Yeah, oh Dabbo
so too. Yeah, there's two coaches. Yeah, isn't that crazy
to think about?
Speaker 2 (04:30):
I know.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
What and what it can do to you? What the
what the what the job certainly can do to you?
A couple of other things. Uh some other college football notes.
I mentioned Dian Sanders being upset about Travis Hunter not
(04:52):
being a Thorip Award finalist.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
By the way, I'm just saying it right now in
the record h November twenty six, four or five pm
Central time, Deion Sanders in shore. Sanders will be with
the Oakland I'm sorry, the Las Vegas Raiders.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Ye, that'll happen. That seems to be a growing But
get this. Uh.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
He did say that he expects Shadoor Sanders and Travis
Hunter both to play in a bowl game because, uh,
you know, it was hitting at the possibility they could
skip this recent trend of setting out a bowl game
to protect against the possibility of injury. He was asked
if Friday's game at home against Oklahoma State could be
(05:34):
the final time they suit up for Colorado because they
only have the slightest of mathematical chances to get into
the Bigtorald Championship game.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Is probably not gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
He said, no, it's not the last time you're going
to see them in a Buff's uniform. These two and
all the rest of the seniors have done a wonderful
job of getting us to where we are instilling so
much expectation in our fan base and expectation in ourselves.
So we're going to fight and try to go out
there and kick some butt in this thing on the
right note, and we are going to a bowl game
in this thing on the right note, because our fans
(06:04):
deserve the absolute best.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Love that so love him. Yeah, So.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
That's that's where he stands. That'll be interesting if Travis
Hunter says, yeah, I don't think so, or if you know,
worst case scenario to get injured in that game. Yes, right,
I think Travis Hunter. You know, I'm seeing a lot
of mock drafts.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Could be the number one overall pick in should or
probably gonna be a first round draft pick. Now. Of course,
if his dad does end up taking a head coaching
spot in the NFL next season, what happens with them?
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
I wonder will teams be afraid to draft him? I'll
h Brownie James, you know, because there because it could
be like Eli Manning right where he only where did
he refuse to go to?
Speaker 1 (06:48):
He was not going to go to San Diegos, right,
the Chargers and they got Drew Brees, correct, Yep, Yep,
that's how that works.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
If that'll happen with should possibly.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
If he can stay, was it, Adam Shefter saying, I
don't know if he's powerful enough Deon to be able
to steer him to the Raiders because deals would have
to be made, They would have to trade up possibly
in order to make this thing really and truly happen.
There's one other college football thing wanted to get to.
We were talking about this, you know, the playoffs, and
we're going to find out tonight. The updated playoff ranking standings,
(07:23):
the long ORNs are expected to still be number three
in the standings, which would make the number two in
the playoff because one in two in the rankings would
be Oregon in Ohio State. And of course, as we know,
only one of those teams can represent the Big Ten
Conference in terms as the conference champion drawing a first
round by and if one of those two defeats the
(07:46):
other in the Big Ten Championship, they're probably going to
be the one seed. Texas could be the two seed
if it wins out, if it wins Saturday Night College Station,
then wins in Atlanta against Georgia, they could be the
two seed. Other projections have Georgia going in is the
two seed, but you know, be the two seed, but
they'll probably be ranked third again tonight. So the number
(08:10):
of SEC teams projected, depending on which projection you're looking at,
the number of SEC teams projected to make the college
football playoffs right now is down from five to three
because of Ole Miss and Alabama's losses and Texas A
and M's loss and all that sort of thing.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
So there's that.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Then there is the projection of what could happen with
the Big Ten, with the Indiana taking a hit and
going down but not completely out of the standings, and
what could happen with SMU and Miami and the ACC
and the very real possibility that the Big Twelve champion
could wind up not getting a buye being rated lower
(08:53):
than Boise State, and that boys, he would draw that well,
that was all on the mine of Kansas State head
coach Chris Kleman at his news conference today when he
feels the fault with the Big Twelve lies in the
practice of playing nine conference games instead of eight conference games.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
Other teams can leave lose in other leagues, and it's
that league's really good. We lose in this league in
this league stinks, and I don't understand that as a conference,
we need to get together and figure some things out.
Because for a bunch of teams to be nine and
three and us not get any of those things in
the College Football Playoff, then we've got to cancel one
(09:34):
of these games.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
I don't care what people say.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
We then go to eight games in league play, or
stay with nine but play an FCS or play a
group of five, and I'd say, wow, that would hurt you.
I don't care you say what you want. Ten and
two looks better than nine and three. And we're going
to visit at this year's conference meetings. And because we
(09:57):
have to do things to benefit our league for the
twelve team playoff, not to just benefit our league in general,
and we need to be able to get two and
three teams in the Big Twelve or in the twelve
team playoff. The carnage that you're seeing is going to
allow for one most likely.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
So there it is not happy with it. And saying
that the nine games played in conference plays the problem,
I don't know that that's the whole problem. The problem
for the Big Twelve is that too many teams who
are good teams ranked in the CFP rankings, but not
(10:38):
high enough other than BYU as they were a couple
of weeks ago, not ranked high enough to sustain a
loss or two as what we've seen like with Georgia.
So and here's Texas with one loss and probably in
the three slot right now.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
But it's those other ones.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
And that's his main beef is by playing games, there's
more cannibalizing going.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
On, and right now with the SEC, you play eight games,
eight conference games, and there's been a lot of discussion
and discourse. You know, we've heard sarcast about it, We've
heard CDC asked about it, we've heard Greg Sanky asked
about it. Would the SEC consider going to a nine
game schedule? And there's kind of been likeh you know,
we got to see. And I think this is why
the SEC has waited because even next year, Craig in
(11:25):
twenty twenty five, I believe it's still an eight game
conference schedule. It is, and so I think they want
to see, first off, there's a playoff expan possibly to
sixteen sixteen teams and even more, and also what happens
if these schools beat up on each other like we're
seeing last week with Auburn beating A and M and
Alabama losing the Oklahoma and Ole mis loosing, are we
losing more playoff teams because the SCC they won as
(11:47):
many playoff teams as possible in a nine game schedule.
As Chris Cleman talks about hurts.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
That yep, it does.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
And I think you're right and that they're going to
they're playing a wait and see game with regard to
whether there's a expansion of the playoffs. The expansion will come.
It is inevitable. The genie is out of the bottle.
It's going to happen. And by the way, I'm for it.
I think it's good. I mean, look at look at
the conversation and excitement about the twelve team. It'll be
even more with the sixteen.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
It just will. I'm still I still like eight teams.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
You know what I would like here? Here My way
of looking at it is different than say how the
SEC or other college football people look at it. Here's
the way I'd like it. There are eleven eleven Division
one fps conferences. Give every one of those conference champions
a birth, not a buye a birth. You can rank them.
(12:42):
Give every one of those eleven Division one FPS conference champion,
the back the Sunbell Conference USA American. Yeah, give Mount West,
give them all those five plus the other ones there
are eleven, Go ahead and give them that those births
and then have five at larges. The next five rank
(13:04):
and you can rank it outever you want. However, you
have your committee do the ranking. But don't give automatic bids.
I mean, don't give buys. You have sixteen team things,
you don't have buys, and then you just rank them
and you go from there, and don't don't let automout
conference champions slot in at the top. You just rank it.
(13:24):
But every conference gets in. And for those who would say,
well what good would that do you, I mean, you know,
you have somebody playing a Sun Belt team that probably
slaughter or whatever as supposed to buy whatever, play a game.
Let the whole the totality of the first round be
on the campus sites of the top eight seeds, and
then after that then you go into your bowl thing
(13:45):
with your remaining eight teams like they're planning to do
this year.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Just my thought.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
All right, we're going to talk some basketball coming up
on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
