Speaker 1 (00:00):
On the text line, somebody said Texas and Texas A
and M need to take Thursday back from the NFL.
You know, Chrystalcante says he'd like to see a return
of Friday. Yeah, Black Friday.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Don't think Thursday's ever happens with the three NFL games. Yeah, Now,
the NFL is kind of I wouldn't watch.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Listen year well yeah, yeah next year when we're in
nowI yeah, you don't want to listen. I've done that deal,
that red Eye overnight and then he'd call the game
the next day and all that. So yeah, I wouldn't
mind Friday, but I'm okay with Saturday a little bit too.
Somebody else said the SEC is cannibalizing with eight either
(00:42):
competitive go back to division that they will not go
back to divisions.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
That's not happening.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Do you think the tire breakers just to figure out
h two teams for that or the tar the divisions?
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Yeah, yeah, it'd be nuts.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Well, we've seen it obviously, you know, in the Big
Twelve and the way it's been, so it's nuts. All right,
let's hear some more from Vic shafor Texas women's basketball coach.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
You heard him talking about the Texas Texas and rivalry.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
This guy graduated from A and M, who coached as
an assistant or Gary Blair that national championship team at
twenty eleven, the one there.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
He was asked if.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Aggie's viewed long Worns differently than long Worns view Aggies
from that perspective, because he's seen it now from both sides.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Maybe, you know, I think there's I think you could
you could say that.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
You couldn't say that.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
I think each year's you know, it's different, you know,
it just it kind of depends you and I both know.
For instance, when I was at Mississippi State, Ole Miss
was supposed to be our rival. We beat him like
six straight years, twice a year. Well, my kids, I
couldn't even It wasn't even a matter of trying to
(01:53):
get them up. We had a lot of other teams
on our schedule that were got our attention a whole
lot more than that particular game. I think with this
game between these two schools, you know, each team has
had its moment, But I'm just talking about the overall
(02:13):
rivalry between the two schools, and I've obviously been on
both sides. I think just depending on the year and maybe.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
The previous years.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
You know, each place maybe puts a little more emphasis
on it than others. I think this game Saturday Night,
you can forget the rivalry. The game itself, it has
so much riding on it, you know, with the opportunity
to play for the SEC Championship, that in and of
(02:49):
itself is enough, right.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
I mean, that's what the kids are going to be thinking.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
They don't have any idea what happened back in the
sixties and seventies.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
And probably don't care.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Right what they care about is playing for the SEC Championship.
My kids I have on my team when we have
to go over there and play in January, they're they're
going to be more worried about, more in.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Tune with It's an SEC game and we need to
win it, period.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
You know, they they haven't you know, you and I
were part of the SWC, you know, the Southwest Conference.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
We know you know what all that entailed.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
We know how how dominant Texas was for so long,
and so it's you know, in today's world, it probably
has a little different meaning.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
I think you know what I'm talking about. Yeah, there
you go.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Some thoughts here from Big Shaffer let's hear from a
couple of long worn men's players. And this might be
especially poignant here based on what Cameradge just told me,
But Kenda Weaver long words Guard played really well there
in the In the tournament, New York was was asked
not about playing Delaware State, but about playing Yukon, the
(04:20):
two time defending national champions the following week. And of course,
remember they played Yukon last year at Madison Square Guard
lost to Yukon by ten, and he was asked his
thoughts about matching up against Yukon again and what did
they learn from last year's game.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
I'm looking forward to, you know, bonding my team, you know,
off the court mainly. You know that's going to help
us on the court against Yukon. And I think last year,
you know, we weren't at our full capacity. You know,
we were missing a couple of guys. So I feel
like this year, you know, we'll be ready to play them.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Okay, And you just told me yesterday we were talking
about Yukon losing an overtime incredible game of Memphis and
just got beat again.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
In Maui just lost to Colorado after leading by eight
points at halftime end up losing seventy three to seventy two.
So the defending national champion Yukon Huskies have now lost
back to back games in Mali by a combined three points.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Okay, so that means they're going to be playing for
seventh place in that event tomorrow. Let me also tell
you this, if they keep the bracket the way they
normally do it with the times, it's it's kind of
funny the way they do it.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
The championship game.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Is the last game obviously of the tournament, and it
would be tomorrow night. But the next game is not
the third place game. At least it wasn't for years
and years. The next last game was the seventh place game,
and part of it was because the years they had
shamanat in the field, so because the logo, it was
(05:56):
a local And then they would play the third place
in the fifth place earlier in the day because those
teams could catch commercial flights off the island and get
out in time. I don't know that that's still the case,
but they would put that seventh game next to last,
they would play it later.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
I don't know if that's the case with the brack
looking at it, and.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
They may have changed it, especially with Shamana not in
the field anymore, so that may that may have changed it,
and it would have made sense if they did.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
So.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
I'm guessing they're going to play the loser of Iowa
State Dayton, which would be what's today, It would be
tomorrow at seven o'clock at night.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Okay, yes, that is correct, all right, tomorrow at seven o'clock.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
M Okay.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
That sounds like the next to last game, is what
it sounds like. Yeah, that would be the seventh place game.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yes, actually, well hold on twenty seven, seven pm. Yeah,
that actually might be the very last game, Craig. Yeah,
they've done it that way before too. It looks like
it's the very last game of the tournament.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yep. That's what they used to do. The championship game
is at five pm. Yep. That makes sense.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
That makes sense because again, teams that play in that
deal have a chance to get out that night, like
the Red Eye or whatever. But if you play in
that seventh place game, and that started because of having
Shamanad in it, they were a local so you only
had to worry about one team, and they knew Shamana
would always be in that game, although they weren't always
in that game. The biggest upset in college basketball history
(07:32):
happened in that tournament. Actually it wasn't in that tournament
was over in Maui, I mean over on the mainland
when shaman I beat the number one team of the country,
Virginia with Ralph Sampson. That was that was amazing that
that happened. But I remember also when they beat Texas
long words too lost to meause I think that was
(07:52):
twenty ten or twenty eleven, twenty twelve, twenty twelve was
when they played in that thing.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
It was Yeah, it was not good.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Remember looking at it on the ESPN app and Shamana
didn't even have a link on ESPN dot com and thought,
uh oh, this isn't good.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
Yeah, what's not good? How about from Arthur Kaluma, here's
something Arthur was asked about playing, you know, a road game.
It's almost like a true road game playing Syracuse because
they had and we were both there, so they had
they had their band there, they had fans there. Did
(08:29):
it help the team prepare for a pro QS crowd
helped the team in terms of preparing what they might
see from ukon Man?
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Well, first and foremost.
Speaker 6 (08:42):
We treat all competition the same, all teams the same,
but those are big time games we really want to win.
And if feel like the team level of preparation has
been at a very high level, and that obviously makes
us closer together, and we just got to go out
there on the court there and do act every day.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
All right.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
We'll hear some more from those guys coming up tomorrow
and some more from Vick Schaffer as well. We'll be
back to wrap up today's program here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen under the Zone.
