Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're a yacht rock on.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
That name screams yacht rock like Dan Vogelberg. Yeah, yeah,
he was the yacht rock music. Did you ever listen
to any of his other stuff?

Speaker 3 (00:07):
I don't think so. Very Uh.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
There's some very Christian based themes on his like leader
of the Leader of the Band is supposed to be
you know about Jesus.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
It's supposed to be so kick in Heaven.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Okay, yeah, yeah, so so anyway, Dan Fogelberg there, but yeah,
he fits into the yacht rock realm. And you said,
what there's the yacht rock documentary premiers tonight? Is that
the HBO Max One. There's two of them, the HBO
Max one, produced by Bill Simmons. Yeah, comes out the

(00:41):
twenty ninth. Okay, so, but there's another one. I thought
you supposed tonight. I thought that one was coming out
tonight and it was Thanksgiving week. But he comes out
in the twenty ninth. Okay, all right, all right, I'll
watch that. I love the documentaries Bill Simmons is but
together he is the thirty for thirty Godfathers.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Yeah, absolutely so, I thought to look forward to that.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Let's talk some basketball, long warn women getting ready to leave.
They're playing leagues in a little whiles, they head for
Southwest Florida and get some push down in that tournament.
Starting went to Mexico State tomorn Aight, and Vic Schaefer
was asked about. First of all, he was asked about

(01:22):
the Texas, Texas A and M rivalry because Vic remember
went to school there and he's you know, was on
Gary Blair's staff when they won the women's national championship
in twenty eleven, which of course was the year of
the final game now that was played in the fall
of twenty eleven. Vic was still there at the time,
and he was asked if Texas A and M fans
viewed Texas differently than now Texas fans and team players

(01:47):
in personnel view A and M.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Maybe, you know, I think there's I think you could
you could say that. You couldn't say that. I think
each year's you know, it's different. You know, it just
it kind of depends you and I both know. For instance,
when I was at Mississippi State, Ole miss was supposed
to be our rival. We beat them like six straight years,

(02:14):
twice a year. Well, my kids, I couldn't even it
wasn't even a matter of trying to get them up.
We had a lot of other teams on our schedule
that were got our attention a whole lot more than
that particular game. I think with this game between these
two schools, you know, each team has had its moment,

(02:37):
but I'm just talking about the overall rivalry between the
two schools, and I've obviously been.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
On both sides.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
I think just depending on the year and maybe the
previous years, you know, each place maybe puts a little
more emphasis on it than others. I think this game
Saturday Night, you can forget the rivalry the game itself.

(03:08):
It has so much riding on it, you know, with
the opportunity to play for the SEC Championship, that in
and of itself is enough, right, I mean, that's what
That's what the kids are going to be thinking. They
don't have any idea what happened back in the sixties

(03:29):
and seventies and probably don't care, right, what they care
about is playing for the SEC Championship. My kids I
have on my team when we have to go over
there and play in January, they're going to be more
worried about, more.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
In tune with.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
It's an SEC game and we need to win it period.
You know they haven't.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
You know, you and I.

Speaker 4 (03:58):
Were part of the SWC, you know, the Southwest Conference.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
We know you know what all that entailed.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
We know how how dominant Texas was for so long,
and so it's you know, in today's world, it probably
has a little different meaning.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
I think you know what I'm talking about.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah, that's one way to put he was he was
answering Kirk Bowles question about that, and he's right about
you know, the rivalry has to had some give and
take on both sides.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
I will say this too.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
When Vick Schaffer was on Gary Blair's staff at A
and M, Texas had a real hard time beating the Aggies.
Gail guestingcourse was the coach then, and I think A
and M won like that. Put it this way, they
had every bit as much difficulty beating A and M
as Karen Aston had trouble beating Baylor when when she

(04:54):
got the job at Texas, and I ironically the last
time that she coached Texas.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Against Bailor, they won that game and that was in
wake up.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
But it was hard against AEM because that was going
really really well. Now, obviously in football it's been a
different thing and and now.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
All it's going to be renewed.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
But about his own team, Vick Schaefer was asked how
he assesses his team's play in games versus how hard
they practice, considering and the players have said this, and
Vicka said he wanted to be like this. He wants
practice to be tougher than the opponents that they face.

(05:38):
And he's asked about that.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
Yeah, it's a great question, and it's kind of what
I'd said leading off.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
We've we've had two really good practices.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Our men's practice team provides an incredible challenge for us.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Those guys are really good.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
We can have a lot of failure in that practice
and I can come out out of there going, hey,
we competed today. Like That's how I felt last night.
You know, I called my staff on the way home.
I'm like, what younger practice? And you know, everybody had
their own opinion. My opinion was, Man, I felt good
about it. Even though we had a lot of failure,

(06:17):
we really competed.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
And so.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
You know, I think for me, you know, I'm always
looking for that perfect game, the complete game, the you
know where you're up thirty at half.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
And you win by sixty, and you know, you can
talk at all you want. It doesn't matter what sport.
Kids are kids.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
They're up thirty at half, they're not going to have
the same intendency in the second half. And I was
pleased with how we played at DePaul. That was our
first true road test. I thought we played really hard.
Didn't necessarily play well all the time, but we played
really hard. And you have to give to Paul a

(07:04):
lot of credit. I mean, they've got an off conference
player that was really hard for us to deal with.
We dealt really well with another guard they have that's
really talented. But I just think you know, there's there's
you do have to step back and really evaluate what

(07:25):
you're looking at. Because again, I wanted this week for
us to get better. We have nine days between games
where I really wanted us to be challenged and get better,
and I think we have Okay.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
All right, there's some more from Vic Schaeffer and question
about going on the road because you got these three
games there. Then they're gonna play Notre Dame in the
acc SEC Challenge a week from tomorrow night in South Bend.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
Notre Dame.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
I think it's up to number three in the country
that beat South Carolina over the weekend. They're gonna have
to deal with that. Then they have treacherous road games
at places like James Madison and Richmond, each of them
were in Sea Tournament games. A Vic had to schedule
home and home with those just to be able to
fill out his schedule.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
So he was asked about how confident.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Is his team heading into this difficult road stretch coming
up for them.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yeah, I think my team's pretty confident.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
I think they're you know, they're a veteran group, five seniors,
they've been to the Wars, and so I think they're
very confident.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
And now I don't.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
That doesn't mean anything's gonna translate into wins, but from
a confidence, say, if we get beat at ain't gonna
because we're all tied up and can't function.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
I'll say that, you know, it's it's a confident group.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
And again I'm I'm proud of them because I feel
like we've worked really hard in the last couple of
days and got better. Uh, we had a lot of
failure in pro just but we still got better. And
that's how you grow. You've got to fail. Failure is
part of success. Failure is part of growth, and if
all we were having is Kumbaya and everybody's you know, uh,

(09:14):
it's it's like I told my team the other day,
I can get We've got an unbelievable practice team. I said, naw,
you want me to go, I'll go down to the
old folks home and see if I can get some
you know, older folks come down here and scrimmage us.
And that afternoon, Booker sends me a picture of some
people sitting out on the porch.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (09:35):
She said, hey, coach, I found us some practice players.
And uh, I'm like, no, it's but that that's where
we're at. Like we've gotten better and you know, so
I feel good.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
About where we're at.

Speaker 4 (09:49):
I think our team feels good about it, and you know,
we'll we'll keep working in in uh in practice. But
I feel really good about where my team is right now.
Now again, it's real world's coming and we're gonna have
to be able to handle it and function. But the

(10:11):
script's been to a lot of wars, many they've had
a lot of success in their career, and my young
kids are very very confident. Those three freshmen are unique.
They're special. You know, we all know Booker special Rory.
You know, you start, You've got a team that starts
with Rory Harmon and Madison Booker at guard. That's a

(10:32):
good place to start. But I feel like lead Moore's
getting healthy. Man a bit different team when you've got
a Lion Moore that's healthy. And then Taylor's had a
really good summer and a good fall, and Kyle has
come in and done a great job at five as well.
So you know, well, well we should be okay. I'm

(10:54):
very pleased with where we.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Are right now.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
And one more from Vic Shavor asking about these next
three games down on Soide with Florida. How important are
those four continuing to build the team chemistry that he
always wants to have from his group.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
Yeah, Lila's looked good the last couple of days, so
I would have assumed she's going to be, you know,
ready to go on Friday.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
And again, love our depth at guard.

Speaker 4 (11:19):
We've just not had it and we finally have it,
and so really really love our depth at guard, and
so I'm I'm you know, I think we're going to
be in good shape there and and it has been hard.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
To that's kind of been part of our issue.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
You know, you're up thirty at half uh and then
you you kind of start messing with some combinations in
the second half and they're just not good combinations.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
They just they don't.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
Quite have the chemistry yet that some of your veterans
have together and so but that's why you play those
games early to try to develop it. So I'm I'm
fine with it. We've got to continue to work at it.
We have in practice. I've had that some different groups

(12:10):
playing together the last couple of days to see if
we can develop that. And they'll be lifting off here
in about a half an hour to fly down to Florida.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
We'll hear more from Vig Shaeffer coming up next hour.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Up next, we'll hear from a couple of the men's players,
Kenda Weaver and Arthur Kaluma, and we'll check in with
some of your texts as well. I asked, what's your
most poignant Cowboys Thanksgiving Day?

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Memory?

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Can be a win, it can be a loss, could
be whatever. It might be family sitting there watching a
certain game or whatever. What's your family or your most
poignant Cowboys Thanksgiving memory. We'll get some of more of
those coming up when we continue on Sports radio AM
thirteen under the zone.
