Speaker 1 (00:00):
How long did we know that the SEC may be
in big trouble in terms of the college football playoff?
A few days with Alabama losing and Ole misslosing that
that was a big, big part of it there, and
most of the projections seem to indicate that the SEC
(00:21):
will get to maybe three teams in to the College
Football Playoff. Obviously, the SEC champion, it's going to be
either Georgia or Texas or Texas A and M. If
Georgia wins the SEC title, they get in, and maybe
Texas gets in. If Texas A and M runs the
(00:42):
table and wins, then Texas could very well be left out. Obviously,
if Texas gets in, then maybe Georgia is the other
one get in then with outside shots, Tennessee still has
a chance, and even a real outside shot for South
Carolina even though they'd lost out Alabama, and Alabama of
(01:03):
course has looked at as being completely on the outs.
They're number thirteen right now. Even if they get into
the twelve slot, that would not be good enough to
get them into the playoff, even though it's top twelve
because you have to remember the conference champions. Now here's
where things get really fuzzy. Very interesting right now, as
was announced last night in the latest updated rankings, Oregon
(01:25):
is number one and then Ohio State is number two,
but of course they can't slot into two at this point.
Only one team from the Big Ten the champion, and
right now that projects to be Oregon, could go into that,
so Ohio State would fall to the five slot. That
would mean anything below ten would be in danger of
(01:47):
not getting in. Same thing. Also, because of the Big
Twelve conference, right now, you have Miami at the Texas
would then slot into the number two slot even though
they were ranked third in the rankings. Miami was rank six,
but they would go to number three in the rankings
as a conference champion. And then, according to these rankings,
(02:09):
Boise State, which would be eleven in the rankings but
would be higher rated than the Big Twelve conference champion
projected at this point, which they're projecting at this point
to be Arizona State.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Who may not even make the conference championship game.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Might not, might not. They have to win the Territorial Cup.
They have to beat Arizona and then they've got to
get held one way or another. It's it's setting up
to where it's probably and I do say the words
probably probably going to be Arizona State against Iowa State.
(02:47):
If Iowa State loses to Kansas State, Arizona State would
be locked in for sure. But if Iowa State wins,
then Arizona State's going to need another loss somewhere along
the line the other contenders because it's very jumbled right now.
But these standings right now, these little rankings have as
I mentioned, Oregon number one. That's the only thing that
(03:11):
really slots in truly out of the top four, because
the number two rank would be Ohio State. Again, they
would slot in as the number five because they'd be
the second Big ten team. Texas which was ranked third,
would slot in the number two. That's if the long
Warns go on and win the SEC championship, and right
now they're sitting on top of the standings, but they
(03:32):
still have to beat Texas A and M and they
still have to be Georgia to do that. The three
slot would be occupied by Miami even though they were
number six in the rankings, and then the four slot
to go to Boise State even though they were ranked
eleventh in the rankings. All right, so then after that
the five to twelve match, it will be Ohio State.
(03:53):
We mentioned Ohio State actually is ranked second, but would
have to slot in as the highest ranked team below
the four teams the conference champions who received first round bys,
So the higher state would be fifth. Right now, right now,
they got them slotted in to play Arizona State, who
(04:15):
is only sixteenth in the rankings, but they would be
the fifth highest rated conference champion and they would be
in the twelve spot. Then you go from there to
at largest. Penn State, which was fourth in the rankings,
would slot in at six and play Indiana. Yes, Indiana
still alive because of the carnage that happened in the SEC. Indiana,
(04:37):
ranked tenth in the rankings, would slot in at eleven,
so they're still safely inside that. The eight nine matchup
would be Georgia and Tennessee. Now, under this set of rankings,
that is projecting a Georgia team at number seven in
the rankings eight but if you follow that logic, Georgia
(04:59):
would have a third loss, would they still be at
number eight? Who knows? Same thing with Tennessee, although Tennessee
projects to beat Vanderbilty and then they would sit aside
because they're not playing in the SEC. Championship game, then
you have the interesting matchup. Notre Dame was fifth, but
because the Irish are not in a conference, they can't
(05:21):
go any higher than fifth anyway, and they would project
into the seventh slot, and according to these rankings, would
play SMU a ten seed. So here's the interesting thing
about this. You have two ACC teams in this Miami
and SMU. They're going to play for the conference championship
in all probability, assuming Miami handles Syracuse, SMU has already
(05:43):
clinched its spot. If those two teams wind up playing
in the a SEC Championship in Charlotte next weekend and
SMU wins that game, then you're almost looking at it
being a lock that Miami and SMU would both get
into the conference, will both get into the playoff, so
that would be two ACC. Then, as I mentioned, Arizona
(06:07):
State is holding onto the hopes of the Big twelve
Conference right now. We heard Chris climb and the head
coach of Kansas State just get all bunged up and
talk about how they've got to go to an eight
game conference schedule instead of nine because they're cannibalizing one another,
and so on and so forth right now. The team
that beat his team, Arizona State, is the only Big
(06:29):
twelve Conference school in the mix right now, and that
is being slotted in at number twelve as the sixteen
sixteenth rankedeen. But here's something else to consider. Keep an
eye on what happens tomorrow night between Tulane and Memphis,
(06:50):
see the only Thanksgiving college game being played tomorrow. If
Tulane wins that game, and there's some more cannibal eye
inside of the Big twelve Conference, yes it is possible.
Never mind Boise they handle their business, is a good
chance are in the top four. But what has been
(07:12):
theorized is that if Tulane then knocks off Memphis, there's
a decent chance if they win the American Conference championship
game against Army the next week, which would be a
quality win based on all of this sort of thing.
If it happened that way, and if there was another
(07:34):
mix up or two in the Big twelve, that you
could see two two Group of five teams, two G
five teams make the playoff Boise State and then in
addition to Boise the American Conference champion, if Tulane runs
the table, what would that do well? Depending on what
(07:56):
else happens. If everything else holds to four the way
it's projected right now, you would have Tennessee get in,
Georgia get in Texas or Texas A and M get
in SMU Notre Dame. All those scenarios are just laid out. Indiana,
Penn State. The teams with the bys, oh, they would
get in, but the twelve team would be too lane,
(08:18):
not Arizona State. Can you imagine that that the Big
Twelve conference would be completely shut out of the College
football playoff? Don't act like it's there's no shot.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Of it happening.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
What I read on the Athletic and then I saw
a report at ESPN. I saw Heather Dinninshew, as we've
told you, really follows it very closely. She even theorized
that that there's a possibility that the Big Twelve could
get completely shut out if those dominoes fought. Look, none
of us expected Alabama to lose at Oklahoma, and Ole
(08:55):
Miss to lose at Florida, and Texas A and M
to lose at Auburn. We didn't expect all that to happen.
But one thing that we are used to seeing is
the carnage that happens during the final week or two
of the regular season and conference championship games in college football,
so there's no reason to think that it couldn't happen again.
And if you have some more of that, then yes,
(09:18):
you could see the Big Twelve if Arizona State gets
upset by Arizona and Iowa State should lose, and you
know Colorado lose. In other words, the best Big Twelve
conference team that can come out of there would be
one with two or three losses. Would be while you
weigh down at the bottom of the standings, they might
not be able to climb enough to get ahead of
(09:40):
a second G five team, and you could have two
G five teams get into the playoffs. Just some food
for though, A couple of basketball comments for you as
Texas men and women get ready for their next action.
For the long worn men, it'll be Friday night against
(10:03):
the Delaware State Hornets. Ken the Weaver was asked about
this whole thing about the team jelling because we've heard
Rodney Terry talk about ive heard the players talk about it.
You know, we have to continue to work to get
better and better into gel and somebody asked him, how
will you know when you have gelled as a team.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
You know, I'm always always thinking a crash, you know,
be aggressive, just trying to get an extra possession for
my team. You know, every possession matters in games like
that or in every game. So just trying to be me,
you know, go out there and do my best.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Okay, all right, and then Arthur Kaluma was asked about
the importance of being able to close out Syracuse and
Saint Joe's to win both of those games to help
continue the momentum that has carried the team to five
consecutive wins, and how important was to be able to
close out those games.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
You know, we played, we had to grind out two
pretty hard games in Brooklyn. The main thing that we
would have to do is just make sure our defense travels.
If our defense travels, our offenses come. We're super talented
on the offensive event, we just got to make sure
that we're locktant on the defensive end.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Arthur Glomers sounds like a coach the way he's talking
about that. All Right, we're gonna hear some more basketball.
We're gonna hear from Vick Schaeffer as well when we
continue here on Sports Radio. Am thirteen under the zone
of the Irradio app
