Speaker 1 (00:00):
Obviously Texas, Texas A and M is going to headline
across the nation in collegiate sports as as well as
in the Greater Austin area and in the Brass Valley
in basketball. As we mentioned, Texas men are in action
on Friday night against Delaware State. That is an eight
o'clock tip all, by the way, because it's being done
at the SEC network plus. So that's an eight o'clock tip.

(00:24):
Do you have plenty of time to recover from trip
to fan overload and you know, eating all the turkey
and dressing and all that other coinsts.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
You know, Craig. Hopefully Delaware State does not have any
travel issues. Like their football team in Hawaii, that was tough.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
They did win last night over a team called Penn
State Wilkes Barry and beat them pretty handily. But anyway,
so they'll play Delaware State on Friday night and then
of course the Texas women as we speak are in
the air right now, flying the southwest Florida, flying down

(01:06):
to the Fort Myers area. They're going to play in
the Gulf Coast Showcase. That's a They play this in
an arena that seats about nine thousand, eight thousand.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Something like this.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
It's not a bad building. It's kind of like the
AGB Center in Cedar Park's a little older, but it's
not a bad building and not a bad tournament field
as well. They have some good teams in there, including
a team that they could conceivably play in the championship,
an unbeaten West Virginia team and long wards. Head coach
Vic Schaefer was asked about how this trip to Florida

(01:38):
over the Thanksgiving we can break will help in terms
of connecting his team and continuing to work on that
all important bonding thing.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, I'm excited about it. I think our kids are
excited about going on the road. But you know, the
gauntless fixing to start for us. We have three straight
you know, easy it could culminate with a you know,
on Sunday night, if we take care of business, could

(02:08):
have to play at top ten, top twelveteen in West Virginia.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
But I mean, we got a lot of work to
do before we get to that point.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
You come home late Sunday night, You leave on Wednesday
to go to US to South Bend to play Notre
Dame and on Thursday on National TV.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Come home late Thursday night and.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Leave again on Saturday to go on the road again,
and then we we've got another one on the road
after that and then a home game with South Dakota State,
who's top twenty five always in the NCAA tournament. Well, coach,
right before Christmas, so you know, the gauntlet's here for us,

(02:52):
and we've got to be ready to go. And I'm
excited to take this team on the road kind of
get away a little bit. And I loved our focus
at to Paul and so now we'll see what it's
going to be like in Fort Myers.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
It's a little bit different there in Florida, as we mentioned,
with the three games down there, and it's going to
take a little longer. So this is something that comes
up every year when a team travels over a holiday,
a holiday, be it Thanksgiving, Christmas, there's always that h
word that comes into play, homesick, not being there with

(03:28):
your family for the holiday. And so how does he
as a head coach and his staff help the players
who might feel a little homesick, especially the younger ones
freshman or sophomores on Thanksgiving Day with the team in Florida.
And I know our friend Jeff Jones from kV You
also had a question in the mix here about this,

(03:48):
but here's Vick's thoughts on how he deals with the
team in countering that situation.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Yeah, you know, we usually Thanksgiving is usually a tournament weekend,
so we're usually gone on Thanksgiving. I will say this,
I won't be gone next Thanksgiving, and y'all can figure
out why. But I'm we're gonna be at home next
next week, next year, I promise you.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
But nonetheless, we are typically gone.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
And you know, I'm a big traditional Thanksgiving day meal guy.
I like turkey and dressing. We don't have stuffing, we
have dressing. If I was at home, I'd be making
my mama's homemade dressing.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I've got her recipe and it is off the chart.
You know, I'm.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Always going to go over to the Bontain to my
guy Jimmy Wyckel's place there in La Grange and get
me some homemade pies, or I'm gonna go get them
up in Marble Falls at the cafe at.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
The Blue Bonnet. I'm always gonna have some good desserts.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
And so you know, we'll have a good traditional day
meal in Fort Myers and and uh, and then we
got to play Friday, Saturday, Sunday back to back to back.
We have to play every night at seven point thirty,
which is not my I've never had to do that, y'all.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
I've never been in a tournament.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
And I got stuck at the same time every day,
especially at late, you know, late at night, and so
that'll be a challenge for us to navigate a little bit,
but we'll get through it. But you know, our kids
are I think, excited about going and playing in a tournament.
And you know they made the comment yesterday, man, the

(05:39):
game against Charleton seems like a month ago. And uh
so they're ready to get you to play, and we're
fixing to play a bunch of them in a short
period of time. And just for quick clarification, you're going
to bring the pies with you to Florida or you
have here.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
No, I probably won't be able to bring them with me,
but uh.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
That's that's always It's always something I've always looked forward to.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
My mother always made a great.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Thanksgiving meal, and you know, with with the turkey and
dress and the mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn,
homemade rolls, and then she always had some great pies,
and uh, we've just tried to carry on that tradition
in my family is as we can.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
And when I've had the kids over on Thanksgiving, we
we have it as well. So but now I won't
be able to bring them with me.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
It's a good idea, you know, let me put my
mind to that. It might be a good idea to
put them on a plane and take him with us.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
So then that also asked the question of Vic Schaeffer
about this matchup with Texas A and M. The reporters
really wanted to talk to Vic about the end because remember,
Vick is seeing it from both sides, both the A
and M and Texas side. He was a longtime assistant there.
He went to school there obviously, so he was asked
about Texas A and M. And did he feel like

(07:02):
the Aggies had to bring it against Texas every single
time when he was coaching in Collin Station, And does
he feel the same way now with these roles somewhat reversed.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Well, you have to remember when we got there in three,
I mean, coach Conrad was coming off of the Final
four that they had destroyed us at Arkansas in the
second round the NCAA tournament the year before, I believe,
and and so the league was so good, you know,

(07:35):
there were several teams that were really good.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
They were in the top ten.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
But you know, we were just trying to keep our
head above water. They left us a nice little Division
three team, you know, over there to try to compete against,
you know, the Texas is of the world. And so
it was. It was a struggle. But we slowly but surely,
you know, built it.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
And you know that.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
As time as it happened, and I think coach retired
and then I think that the streak is either eleven
or thirteen straight. And again, we Coach and I understood
the importance of winning those games because when we got there,

(08:27):
we couldn't we couldn't beat Texas on a kid. We
couldn't beat Baylor on a kid. We couldn't beat Texas
Tech on a kid. So we were going to recruit
the state of Texas. We were going to get the
fourth best player. And you can't do it. You can't
catch anybody getting the fourth best player in the state
of Texas every year.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Does that make sense? And so we.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Knew, you know, we had to we had to hang
our hat on something, which was our defense, and slowly,
you know, just kind of creep around and try to
catch up, and then you get you know, you get
lucky on a kid or two, and next thing you know,
you you know, you're you're playing hard in your guarden.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
And and so, uh.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
We understood the importance of that game in the big
picture for us to try to survive and be a
factor in this you know, as a as a as
a basketball team in the state of Texas, because at
that point it was Texas, it was Texas Tech, and

(09:34):
really it was steven F.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Austin when coach was at steven F. Austin.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
Those were the three schools that were committed to women's basketball.
Nobody else was committed. They had teams, but they weren't committed.
Texas and Texas Tech and Steven F. Austin were three
of the best teams in the country. But it was
because their administrations were committed, and part of that commitment

(09:58):
was having good coaches, and then those good coaches understood
the importance of recruiting. So yeah, it's it's something that
we certainly understood, respected and it's it's really what motivated
us day in and day out, And it's why they
hired us there because we were Texas guys and they

(10:22):
knew that that we had had success recruiting the state.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
We had been a part of the state in coaching
for so many years.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
And the bottom line is, y'all, there's if you're going
to function it at the University of Texas or an
A and M or anywhere else, if you can't recruit
this state, it's gonna be hard for you. Men, it is,
It's gonna be hard for you. So I think that's
what you see right now in football. Both those schools

(10:50):
are going head to head, you know, in recruiting a lot,
and you know, we're just we feel like at Texas
we ought to constantly being the running for the best
players in the state.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
So we make it a priority.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
So there's the thoughts of Vick Schaeffer. We'll be back
to wrap up today's show and the week going into
the holiday on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
