Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, there's a lot more to get to, but
I want to jump right into this. Texas Women play
Southern University tonight at Moody Center at seven o'clock. Again,
you can hear the broads hope to see out there
Moody and if not, you can certainly hear it on
one of three point one FM, Austin's eighty station. You
can listen through the app that would be the connect

(00:23):
through the iHeartRadio app, also the Texas Longhorns app and
the LHN app on our network app as well, so
there's different ways to access it also. But leading into
the game, the thoughts from Vic Schaeffer again, this was
a media availability yesterday and he was talking about the
road they'd have with five out of six games on

(00:43):
the River, actually five in a rowing road in six
out of seven in total. So here is the Q
and A with Vic Schaeffer yesterday talking about this impending
matchup with Southern and what's to come with the trip
to Richmond this Sunday.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yeah, thanks for being here everybody. I'm glad to be
back home for a few days. Proud of my team,
proud of the effort they gave on Sunday rebounding from
obviously a tough loss on Thursday night where we probably
didn't play very well. That's not taking anything from Notre Dame,

(01:21):
but twenty three turnovers against two three zone is.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Hard.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
It's hard to beat anybody, especially a top ten team
on the road, when you turn the ball over twenty
three times, and so many of our turnovers were unforced,
just trying to do way too much. And so, you know,
in a game like that, much like in the football
game the other night, it's it's one possession, it's one play,

(01:47):
it's one rebounds, it's one defensive stop. You know, it's
one execution versus a you know, poor execution. And when
you're playing in those types of games, in that scenario,
you really you know, for us being on the road,
you've got to be on point. And had so many
good things happening down the stretch. Rory showed tremendous toughness,

(02:11):
making a tough shot and making two free throws to
get it to overtime. And so, you know, got in
at three in the morning on Friday morning, had to
go to class, tried to practice Friday afternoon a little bit.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
It wasn't very good as I'm sure you can imagine.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Saturday was much better, but playing problems, playing delays. We
got in there late Saturday night, had early shoot around
Sunday morning, and then the way we showed up and played,
especially Rory and Madison. I thought Taylor was really good

(02:53):
after taking a tough, tough fall on Thursday night, really
was limited practicing on Friday, didn't practice at all. It
would be correct, and then Saturday was a little bit better.
But man, I thought she was right on point on
Sunday defensively altered shots, block shots or hedging on ball

(03:15):
screens was on point. She only went one for one,
but she impacted the game so much. And then Jordan
Lee obviously making shots. She actually went six for seven.
They didn't get the one that she missed, but she
went six for seven from three.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
So anytime you can add that to.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Your arsenal Rory went two for two, it really helps
your case. And obviously we made shots early. Our defense
was on point, held them to nine points in the
second quarter. You're up fifty seven I think to twenty
nine and half or twenty eight, or maybe it was
maybe it's fifty seven to twenty eight.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
But it was a lot and played really good. It's
a team that has got some really good players. I mean,
they're probably gonna win their league like they did a
year ago. They've got pre season player of the Year
on their team, and so, you know, I thought we
played really well and again four kids really showed up

(04:18):
and made a really positive impact and.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
It kind of carried our team.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
So gave them the yesterday off and much needed and
we'll get ready today finally going to get to play
it in Austin.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
I don't know if it's a home game.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
We hadn't been in the Moody in a while either,
so I don't know how well we'll shoot it in there.
But we're going to get to play in Austin on
our campus anyway, and so that'll be good tomorrow, and
then back on the road this weekend against a you know,
a really good Richmond team that was twenty nine and
six last year in the NCAA tournament. They've got five

(04:56):
starters back and two kids out of the portal from
Power our Fives that were pretty good players at their
previous school.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
So we'll have another, you know, challenge.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
This weekend going back on the road, but excited for
our kids to be able to play at home tomorrow night,
Excited for our fans to be able to see our
kids play, hoping we'll have a great environment.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
NKS coach.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
We'll start with Mark, Hey, what prompted this sudden I
guess it's two game barrage of three point baskets?

Speaker 3 (05:28):
And is this something we could expect to see more of? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Mark, I think we're more than capable of shooting, you know,
making shots from out there. Rory's already been in this morning,
like she is every day. Shay comes in just about
every day, Jordan Lee's in every day, Madison Booker's in
every day. When I talk about my kids and being
a pro, that's what I'm talking about. They're invested in

(05:59):
their game. Y'all have heard me say this a bunch.
The game is real fair. You're going to get out
of it what you put into it. Those kids invest
in their game. I wish I could say I have
fourteen kids again in the gym and do that every day,
but I just can't.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
But those kids do. They work at it, and when.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
We go to the arena right now, you know, I've
got four kids that they want to be out there
on their own early. I'm talking about two hours prior
to tip, working up a sweat, getting up game like shots.
And so I just think, to answer your question, we're

(06:42):
more than capable of that. I had told Jordan Lee
last week after the Notre Dame game, I said, you're
probably you know, if you're not our best three point shooter,
you're right up there with them. I go make shots,
you get a chance, and they leave you open, make shots,
and she did, and.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
I just.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
You know, I think we have a team that's got
kids that can make shots. So but you know, life
on the road is like that, y'all. Some nights you're
gonna make more than others. Some nights you're not. And
that's when you've got to find another way to help
us win. When your SHOT's not falling, you got to
help me win another way. It's not well, take me out,

(07:22):
it's let me help you win another way. Let me guard,
let me defend, let me rebound, let me be a
great help side defender. You know, there's all kinds of
ways that you can can help us win. I think
that's the struggle with any young person. Their ego thinks
they got to go in and score. That's you know,

(07:43):
we have people on this team that can do that.
You know, our five players are shooting sixty and seventy
percent from the floor, like Taylor and Kyla are shooting
a phenomenal number. Well, we need to play inside out.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
You know, our.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
My video guy Connor, did some research and like our
shooting percentage is in the fifties when when we play
you know, inside out, when we don't, when we don't
get a paint touch, it's like nineteen percent. So you've
got to realize, hey, we probably need to get a

(08:21):
paint touch. That's not necessarily the five player. That's the
guard getting into the paint. It's a kickout for three,
it's it's a jump stop in a mid range.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
All those things are are part of that.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
So that I do believe we have kids that can
make shots, and that includes a three point shot.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
I know that's been a.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Topic of conversation for this group, and that's fine. But
some nights you're going to get that. Some nights you're not.
And you know, I think we proved the other night
that we made them get out of his own you know,
he was down there, coach was down there shaking his
head and I had to tell him afterwards, I go,
you know, you caught us on the wrong night. You know,
we were pretty smart and after Thursday night, and we

(09:04):
played really good. Our defense was really good. Offensively, we
made shots. Look, when Booker goes ten for thirteen and
Rory's eight for eleven, we're gonna have a chance to
win every night. Then you throw in a six for
seven from three with Jordan Lee, it's gonna be hard
to guard us.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Thanks Mark, let's got to know it.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
Hey, Vic, you talked about your conversation with Jordan after
the Notre Dame game. When a freshman is you know,
has a couple of games where they're not shooting or
maybe playing like they want, what are the conversations like
for you with them? And is Jordan somebody that even
needs a conversation like that? I mean she kind of
turned it around in a pretty major way this past weekend.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Well, I think my conversation with Jordan, it was actually
with jordanan Brie Preston was Look, you know you didn't
play a lot Thursday night. I don't think that'll ever
happen again, So be ready. Keep working those kids. Both
those kids, you know, they're part of the four that
get out early.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
And they're just great kids.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
They invest in their game, they want to be great,
and I just wanted them to know. Look, you know,
sometimes you get in those games like the Notre Dame game,
and as a coach, you rely on those veterans because
you have confidence and trusting them, and you're still trying to,
you know, maybe figure out some of your newer, newer

(10:32):
players and don't know how they're going to respond in
those moments.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
And so I just wanted them to know.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Hey, you guys, continue to do what you do, get
ready and be prepared. And both those kids have been
great all year, and uh, you know they're going to
have some ups and downs, and you know they had
them in the Notre Dame game. They had them. You
know they've had them in other games. But I'm we're
going to play through it. You know, we're gonna we're

(10:59):
gonna learn from it. Those two really work hard every day.
I mean, they're they're sponges. And uh, you know Jordan
Lee is she's she's not only in here working, but
you know she's, oh she's really smart, Like that's going
to be a doctor one day. We may all be
going to her at some point in our life. She's

(11:19):
she's really really sharp in school and doing a great
job there as well. And you know that's that's one
of the reasons she's here. She she's she wants that
that medical degree, and she'll get it, there's no doubt
about it. So anyway, I think those kids, I just
wanted them to know, a I've got confidence in them
and you know, be ready, And of course they both were.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
The other night. Good Brian Vic.

Speaker 5 (11:48):
Going back to uh Thursday night, did it? Did it
bother you more about who was turning the ball over?
I mean it was your veterans as opposed to you know,
your freshman out there being freshmen?

Speaker 3 (12:01):
Is that what he touch a little bit more than
anything else.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
I think the biggest thing, Brian, was how we did it,
I mean unforced. You know, Coach Blair used to call
them eye passes. We had a lot of eye passes,
you know, where you look good if they catch it
and if they don't, you know, in their fifty fifties,
I call them fifty fifties.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
And you know it just we made some really poor decisions.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
I don't know, if you looked at the box if
you had a turnover in that game, you either had
three or five. Nobody had one or two. You either
had three or five. And so I just think it's
decision making. It's kids trying to make things happen. You know,
they're trying to try and there, you know, to make

(12:52):
it happen. But sometimes just playing old vanilla, you know,
it's pretty good. I don't need all the relish and
onions on my hot dog. I just need a plain
old hot dog sometimes. And so I think, you know,
that's the thing, you know, when you're playing the game
is just blue collar plane, old vanilla, grind it out.

(13:18):
You're on the road. We've got to take care of
the ball, you know. Sunday Rory had zero turnovers. Madison
Bookers zero turnovers. We're gonna have a chance to win
a lot of games when those two are taking care
of the ball like that. So we had I think
five turnovers at halftime Sunday and then we had eight
in the second half. Some of that some of those

(13:38):
kids coming off the bench. You know, you've heard me
talk about continuity through substitution, and so we've got to
get better there. But yeah, I just think a lot
of it was just trying too hard. It's a two
three zone, y'all. That's it. I mean, we just we

(14:02):
got to be better. We worked really hard on it,
to be honest with you. The next day we had
twenty eight turnovers on Friday and practice, so it wasn't
any better and we were working on it. But then
Sunday was much better. So these kids will get it again.
Rory Harmon is getting better and better, y'all every day.

(14:24):
So she looked to me like her old self Sunday,
pull up and transition, get into her spot. I don't
think she took a bad shot. If she did, she
might have taken one. And she went eight for eleven,
no turnovers. I don't know how many assists she had,
but I'm sure she had several, and so that's always

(14:49):
good to see.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
Real quick coaches.

Speaker 5 (14:51):
One quick follow up, a little bigger picture the game itself,
the Notre Dame game, obviously, in this game against a
high level team, and.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Then I don't know how much you saw, but.

Speaker 5 (15:07):
That game in the highlights got an incredible run on
Sports Center after that, Just what did what did? What
do you think of the whole SEC A SEC challenge
concept in terms of the type of matchups you're gonna
get to play in it.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Well, my initial response is I hope they send Notre
Dame back to us next year.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
I think it's only fair.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
You know, we went up there, we played them in
front of a pretty good crowd. It was a good environment. Again,
not taking anything from them. Wasn't our best night obviously
with twenty three turnovers. Hadalgo played really good and in look,
I think people acknowledge that because she went against somebody

(15:55):
really good in in in in Rory.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
I mean, those two went at it, and.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
So I think, you know, from the matchup standpoint, I
hope they send them back to us next year.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
I just think it's only fair.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
Don't send me somebody different wouldn't be fair to them,
whoever that different person is.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
You know, we're going to do this to me. The
right thing to.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Do is is send them back to us next year
in a return. But you know, I don't mind the
sec ACC challenge, which we could have held up our
end of the bargain and won the game.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
But we went into a top ten opponent.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
They moved up from I think ten to six, or
maybe we dropped to six. They moved up to eight,
so obviously you know it wasn't viewed. It's too bad
of a loss that we only dropped two spots and
they didn't jump us.

Speaker 3 (16:51):
So you know, I like it.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
It's fine with me if we didn't play that game,
we'd try to schedule.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
Somebody like that anyway.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
But I think it's only fair that, you know, in
my mind, they returned to us next year.

Speaker 1 (17:07):
Sometimes that works out. I know with the SEC Big
Twelve Challenge games, you didn't always play the same team
in back to back years. You might play one team
when they kind of you ever do really well. I'm
trying to think if they did it one time they

(17:28):
did it with Tennessee, the men did it with Tennessee.
Had that remember when when Texas won by one point,
when Rick Barnes came into the Irwin Center and fifteen
two run by Tennessee at the very end of the
game or something ridiculous. Yeah, and Jaxson's won like fifty
fifty or fifty two. And then remember they played the
return game in Knoxville and Tennessee won. Now, but it's

(17:51):
more the exception than the rule, and some of that
is because of size of the conferences, and some of
it is also because of they're trying to get the
best matchups, and one team that's really good one year
might not be that good going into the next year,
and vice versa, and they project what ahead. I think
Texas and Notre Dame will both be good next year.
I don't think there's any doubt about that. So Vix's

(18:12):
point is well taken for sure. All Right, we have
more coming up. Stay with us here on sports Medio
