Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, a couple of golf notes I wanted to get to.
First of all, it came down yesterday Scotti Scheffler winning
the Jack Nicholas Award as the PGA Tour Player of
the Year. No grand surprise there. After all, he won
a second green jacket at the Masters. He had seven
victories on tour. He also won a gold medal at

(00:23):
the Olympics. He won the fed x Cup title, won
the Players Championship, first golfer since Tiger Woods from five
to oh seven to win the honor in three straight seasons.
So obviously there was no surprise there. I think everybody
would have expected that. Him winning the Jack Nicholas Awards,

(00:43):
a couple of other things that I wanted to get to.
I guess you saw the Tiger Woods announcement about when
he's planning to return. He's along with his fifteen year
old son, Charlie. They can play in the PNC Championship,
and he played. He's played the thirty six whole PNC

(01:04):
Championship with Charlie every year since twenty twenty. And the
tournament invites players who have won majors or the Players
Championship with family members, typically their children, that is coming
up next weekend in Orlando, so it's kind of local
for him too. What do you think about that tournament? Formatt,

(01:25):
it's a good tournament for December golf. Here you go.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Okay, that's all it is. All right, It's all it is.
It's golf in December. Nobody cares about it. Nobody really
wants to watch it.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
So the only way to get people involved is if
you get guys like Tiger Woods and his son out there.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Yep, yep.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
All right, so there you go in Orlando.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Let's hear some more from Long Worn's head coach Vick Shaffer,
Texas women's basketball coach. We heard some last hour. Here
is part two of his conversation with the media leading
into the night's game against Southern.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
You mentioned Jordan's academic goals about that toach a moment ago,
you mentioned Jordan's academic goals, wants to be a doctor.
When you're recruiting an athlete and she mentioned academic goals
like that, what goes through your mind? Do you hear
that as as a big advantage to having an athlete
like that on your team?

Speaker 2 (02:11):
No question? You know? Uh? Heck?

Speaker 4 (02:17):
Coach Shaffer junior was in biological science, made a three
six seven. I thought I had a doctor or a
veterinarian on my hands, and she was going through that,
and then all of a sudden at the last she
decided to change her mind or to communication and went
into work for SEC Network and then ends up being
a coach. But you know, I love the fact that

(02:40):
Jordan wants to be a doctor. She's gonna be a doctor,
She's going to be a great doctor. And obviously, our
our UT Medical brand, you know, it's not only part
of the Longhorn brand, but it has its brand of
its own. And knowing what they're fixing to build right
yar behind me where the drum used to be in

(03:03):
in uh you know uh uh a cancer research hospital
that's you know, part of the big system in Houston
and now is going to be part of our our
UT system here.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Man.

Speaker 4 (03:19):
It's that's really cool. You know that our students are
going to benefit from M. D Anderson and and everything
that that brand stands for.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
And so I think that's something that's you know.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
Our administration, uh President Hartzell's to be commended for to
get that here. And then our students, you know, our
our our doctoral students are going to be the benefactor
of that. And if I've got a player that's capable
of that, heck yeah, man. Uh, I'll practice at midnight
if I have to to work around her schedule.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
But I would do that for anyone because that's.

Speaker 4 (03:56):
Just really special. And she's a special kid. I mean,
she's she's just really really special. She's unique, and uh,
you know, we're lucky to have her.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Thanks Jeff. Let's go to Zach.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Hey, coach, would you consider West Virginia and Notre Dame
crucial games for preparing for SEC play? Where you're playing
competitive games two to three times a week, games like
South Carolina LSU.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
How do these non con games get you ready for
the SEC?

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Well, certainly some non conference teams are better than others.
And you know, uh, I think the thing that bothered
me last week was we played three in a row Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
We got in Sunday night at three am. Kids had
to go to class Monday. You know, we took Monday off,

(04:49):
but kids were it's not a day off when you've
got to go to class, You've got tests. We practiced Tuesday, Wendy,
We're back on the road. You played Thursday on the
road once again. We got in at three, you know,
two in the morning. Kids aren't going to bed till
three in the morning. And and uh, you know that's

(05:12):
travel issues, that's playing problems, it's playing company, it's whatever
it is. But my kids are suffering. Like I've done
this forty years. I've never had kids getting home from
any road trip where they're going to bed at three
in the morning.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
I've had it back to back.

Speaker 4 (05:27):
Road trips and and so our kids didn't go to
bed till late, had to go to class on Friday.
I mean, I've got kids in eight o'clock classes. I've
got kids with eight o'clock study hall. It's a challenge,
but I knew that. James Madison warned our attention. So
we had to try to practice Friday afternoon. And I'm

(05:48):
telling you, they're they're They're not bad, they're pretty good.
They're going to win their league, and they've got really
good players. They've got preseason Player of the Year on
their team. So it warranted our tension. And so to
go in there and play that well in the first
half was so encouraging for me. And again wasn't everybody.

(06:11):
I wish I could say it was, but it wasn't.
But those four kids in particular really stood out to me.
And it's all in their approach, y'all. Those kids are
pros and how they approach the game and how they
approach life and how they approach their academics.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
I mean.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
And so you know, again, games like that, playing those
five games in what eight nine days, that's the toughest
piece that gets you ready for a rugged SEC game
SEC schedule. Certainly West Virginia being in the top ten,
Notre Dame being in the top ten, on's on our

(06:49):
neutral floor, ones on the road, you know, weren't even
getting to play those teams at home, and to do
what we did. Now we've got another one coming up
in Richmond, and we've got a top twenty five South
Dakota State who's so well coached and always in the
NCAA tournament right before Christmas.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Then we're going to.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Play another one in Maryland in non conference, right in
the middle of conference. So all these you know, all
this scheduling obviously hopefully sets you up to be successful
in the SEC, but.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
The SEC is a.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
Nightmare in and of itself and the Thursday Sunday part
y'all is what's really I've been fighting it ever since
I've been in the league.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
It's really hard on your kids.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
And when you don't have a true day off in
January and February, if you don't know how to navigate that,
it can really wear on your team because getting up
and going to class on Monday and having an exam,
a physics exam or a chemistry test, that is not
a day off. You know, when we were in the

(07:57):
Big Twelve, we had Sundays off, and that's a true
day off, and it allows your kids to just kind
of vedge out, relax, get their feet under them, get treatment.
We won't have that, And it's been a concern of
mine for a while now, and you know, I've sat

(08:17):
in that room. I've seen it evolve from the old
days with you know, the old coaches, the Andy Landers,
the Coach Summit, you know, several others that had been
in the legue a while advocating and it all stemmed
from TV. That's how we ended up starting to play

(08:38):
on Sunday back in the day. But now with our game,
it's not just Sunday availability we're available all the time,
and so I really, you know, I'm always going to
advocate and push to try to get that changed a
little bit. But I'm beating my head in the wall
right now. I'm kind of the lone ranger. Although I
will say the room has changed some and I do
think there's there's more in the room that understand the

(09:01):
importance not only of.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Your players but your staff.

Speaker 4 (09:06):
You know, there's just it can really wear on you.
So in any case, that's for another day. But the
non conference schedule is certainly important in getting you ready.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Mark, you got another one?

Speaker 3 (09:21):
Yeah, quick?

Speaker 5 (09:23):
The couple. Is there somebody in your athletic department who
needs to be in touch with the SEC, you know,
to make sure you get a fast shake on the
return scheduling. And is there somebody on your team like Rory,
I'm sorry that who needs to make sure that more
than four players show up, you know, for unscheduled work.

Speaker 4 (09:49):
Well again, I'm not saying only four show up for
unscheduled work, but consistently, you know, those kids are out
here day in and day out, and there may you
know here a lot, you know, she's.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
In here a lot.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
We we all I'm gonna say is those four are
in the What I'm saying is on game day, two
hours prior to tip, those are our first four that
are activated to get on the floor. Not those aren't
the only ones that come out early. We have other
people that come out after them, but that's our first
activation group because they want to be out there and

(10:27):
have their own time where they can really get up
a bunch of shots.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
I have a gym full of kids that come in early.

Speaker 4 (10:34):
They're going to be out here early today before practice
and they'll get up shots.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
But I would say.

Speaker 4 (10:40):
Those other four because of you know, getting out early
on game day, that separates them a lot. And then
Rory Rory's in here, Jordan Lee's in here every day
getting shots up. Shay's in here pretty consistently getting shots up.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
And so do we need more that'll that will take
that time.

Speaker 4 (11:03):
Absolutely, But it's I don't want to say it's just
those four, but it is what it is, and we've
got to try to get more, to do more and
spend more time in here. To answer the other part
of your question, I mean, I've talked to the league
office and certainly know those people and voiced my you

(11:26):
know what I believe would be right and fair, and
you know, we'll see how it all shakes out. It's
it's something that's obviously a collaboration between two leagues, So
two people, two conference not commissioners, but the women's basketball administrator,
Tiffany Daniels for us, and then that person in the

(11:48):
a CEC office. They have to sit down and hammer
out who exactly is going to play who in that deal.
I've expressed my my interest in Notre Dame returning us
through Tiffany, and she'll do what she can. I'm known
her a long time, like her a lot, and she
does a great job for us.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Thank you, yep, Thanks Mark Deaf Do you have one one?

Speaker 3 (12:13):
I do?

Speaker 2 (12:13):
Yes.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
Shay is going to be recognized as the program's career
games played leader. What does that record say about her?

Speaker 4 (12:24):
Kid's a winner, Kid's tough, She's a competitor. She does
what I you know, I tell kids all the time.
She just stays in a picture, you know, but you
know she's the the ultimate competitor and the ultimate teammate.

(12:45):
She cares nothing about the glory. She cares all about team.
She cares about the program. Who she is and what
she represents as a young lady and a student athlete.
So much of that credit goes to her mother and father.

(13:06):
And she's just a classy kid, but tough, competitive. I'm
telling y'all, if she hadn't been a basketball player, she'd
be a world class decathlete.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
I mean, the kid is just.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
Really really a special, special athlete.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
In so many ways.

Speaker 4 (13:29):
But I just think the you know, nobody deserves it
more than her.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
She's earned it.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
And again, she's the classic example much like Blair was
during her career, just staying in the picture, just staying
in the gym, working at it wasn't easy early, but
just didn't give in in an excuse maker. She's not
a butt but but but persons. She's all about accountability

(14:04):
and what it takes to be great. And again, she
is who she is as a basketball player because she's
invested in her craft, and she is who she is
as a young lady because I believe her parents there
just they have done such an incredible job with her.
And you know, again we've just been really really lucky
here at Texas to have had had her for five years.

(14:29):
You know, I'm a much better coach. I'm a I'm
a better person having Shay Holly on my team over
the last you know, four plus years, and I just
have a real appreciation for her.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Thanks, coach, I appreciate your time. Well.

Speaker 4 (14:47):
Just to close it out, so we're also going to
honor Taylor Jones for her not only her fifteen hundredth point,
but obviously we screwed up here and didn't even acknowledge
her for her thousand career points and so, and that
happened over a year ago in the NCAA Tournament against
East Carolina. So we're gonna honor her as well in

(15:10):
the future with her thousandth and fifteen hundredth basketball and again,
she's she's had a great career. I'm just excited to
see her continue to get better. We I've always said,
if I can keep her healthy, she's got a chance
to really help us and and and even play after this.

(15:33):
So showed a lot of toughness over the weekend, y'all,
after that pretty tough fall against Notre Dame, pretty much
flat on her back, to come back and play on
Sunday and play as well as she did really said
a lot about her to me. And I'm glad to
see that part of her growth happen, because you know,

(15:54):
we're never one hundred percent.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Nobody is.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
But that was a pretty tough fall and I'm really
proud of her coming back.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
She had an impact on the game.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
So there it is, Texas against Southern University. I hope
to see out at Moody Center time. It's a seven
o'clock tip. We'll obviously have the broadcast for you. Aaron McMahon,
the former long Holm, will join me for the call
of that with a six forty five airtime seven o'clock
tip off for Moody Center on one oh three point
one FM, Austin's eighty station. Texas against Southern More coming

(16:27):
up here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
