Speaker 1 (00:00):
Craig Way is my name. Glad to have you with us,
and we're with you up until five o'clock this afternoon,
and you know that we have a basketball game tonight
to bring you and we'll have that for you six
(00:20):
thirty airtime and seven o'clock tip here on the thirteen
under the zone and also on nine eight point one
FMK that we're going to hear from Rodney Terry came
up as Texas takes on New Mexico State tonight. How
about your thoughts on those NBA games last night? How
about the Atlanta Hawks, Yeah, beating the New York Knicks.
(00:44):
This is a team that's fourteen and twelve going to
the final four of the Emirates NBA Cup.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I said yesterday the Knicks will win. Nope, Nope, does
not matter. DeAndre Hunter having a good game, Trey Young
eight of twenty two shooting, you know, but he did
his Tray Young thing, you know, mocking the New York crowd.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
There's just it's early.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
For the next so I'm not gonna, you know, read
too much into the next and how they played in December,
but there is something to just Trey Young in the
Atlanta Hawks, who you know, have been an okay team.
They have that one Eastern Conference final appearance a few
years ago. Besides that, have been a borderline playing team.
But for some reason, and you know, credit Trey Young
that you know, in the biggest spotlights, he shows up,
(01:28):
the Hawks show up, and they just you know, they
appeared to be the Knicks. Is Achilles heel. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
I asked you a couple of weeks ago, which thought
about Jalen Johnson.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
What a year he's having. Wow, he's been He's been
a huge addition to the Hawks. And what a draft find.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
You know, Trey Young is always going to be in
trade rumors, and we'll see what the future holds for
for Trey Young and if they can really contend and
win with him as their point guard. But I'll tell
you what, Craig, they have found something with Jalen Johnson
that if they decide to move on for Trey Young
and try to build around possibly Jalen Johnson, it makes sense.
(02:09):
I mean, they have a good roster. I love I
love their team and what they have outside.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Of Troy Young.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
I'm not the biggest Troy Young fan, I'll be honest
with you, but I love dere Hunter. I love Dyson Daniels.
He's a fantastic defender.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
He's been. He's having a great season offensively.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Of course, he still got bogged on, you know, the
number one overall draft pick, reesa sche You know, we'll
see what happens with him and Larry Nance Junior. You know,
he's a he's a really good bench piece. You know,
he played a big role for the Pelicans the last
couple of years and with the Lakers, so I like
their roster. I just don't like Troy Young. You know,
he's part of that helio centric offense. Every time you know,
(02:48):
Atlanta gets the ball on offense, it's gonna be a
lot of dribble, dribble, dribble, drible screen all right, ree
screen another screen. You know either's going to be a
step back three or a floater in the lane or
maybe you know Young will will dish out.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
He does average what was just a pre season but
get it to Jalen Johnson, right, yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Or you get rid of Trae Young and you know,
run the offense a little bit better. So we'll see.
But it makes yourself figuring some things out, all right.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
So the NBA's the Emirates NBA Cup the N Season
Tournament which rest in peace in hes in tournament a
right when it was formerly known as N Season Tournament.
It gained some credibility because Lebron and the Lakers won
it last year, right, yes, okay, and they I think
they had a ceremony, right, hung a banner and then
(03:36):
they lost in the first round. Yes, exactly, so, so
they won. So they won it last year, so they
gained a little bit of uh that that N Season
Tournament gained a little bit of credibility? Did it a
little bit because the Lakers won? Yeah? Because Lebron the
name branding, I think.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
So, all right, let me ask you this. Do you
know how much it cost to buy a ticket right
now to the whatever it's called. It's ninety dollars resell.
It's gone from three hundred to ninety dollars if Lebron
is playing in it.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
I agree with your point. That's for a point, okay, okay.
The point that I was getting to is the Lakers
win it last year, it gets a little bit of credibility.
Now here it is in year two and your four
teams that are playing for the Emirates NBA Cup The
four teams are Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, and Houston. The
(04:30):
Rockets who beat the Warriors ninety one ninety last night.
Can you blame it for the ticket prices dropping the
ninety eight dollars? I don't know.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
I mean, okay, see gonna be the NBA champion season.
Boston is out of it, right, Boston's out of it.
I just named the four teams. It's Milwaukee's Oklahoma Johannis.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Okay, they were in it last year at Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Uh,
Atlanta and Houston. Now does that move the needle for you?
You're an NBA guy, so it's gonna move the needle
for you anyway. And your team's in it. But if
your team is not in it, let's let's uh, if
Dallas had won it, had won over Oklahoma City the
(05:17):
other night, would you be that jazzed up about it?
Speaker 2 (05:21):
I think so, Rockets, Mavericks, you know, you know, let's
the in season state or end season in state kind of.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Don't say the R word, don't rivalry, don't. I don't
think it's a round. I think I think Mavericks and
Spurs are more of a rivalry than Mavericks Rockets. The
Rockets don't really have the way either are really rivals.
I don't.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
I think NBA rivalries have been have been lost for
the most part, it's more about just players first player.
It seems to be more rivalries.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
I think it's interesting because you know, on the Western
Conference side of it, for for Oklahoma City, they're the
favorite to win the finals, and he had this young
Rockets team that you know they have they have a
lot of depth. You know, I think the rotation might
be too big. We'll see what happens when that come
trade deadline. But you know, they're kind of in the
same spot that uh, okay see was last year a
(06:11):
couple years ago. You know, they're chomping at the bit
to kind of prove themselves said, hey, we're here. In
last night's whatever, Golden State was a big step towards that.
And Steve Kerr used the word that you love to use, Craig.
He called the the referees last night unconutionable, unconscionable. I've
never heard anyone else use that except for you, but
you use it.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
All the time. That unconscionable.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
That's like what if if you had like a list
of like, Craig way Go two phrases unconscionable.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
I think it's up there for you. Trepidation is up there.
I've used trepidation, unconscionable, conscia. But Steve Kerr, you know
called I don't remember. I mean, I've used it before,
but I don't think that's a have you with trepidation?
Yes now?
Speaker 2 (07:00):
But but also a part of this, Craig is just like,
you know, the the ratings are down, and you know,
I don't want to be the rating guy.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
I just don't think.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
You know, the way we consume sports now is like
it's so easy to follow sports just on your phone,
right on Twitter. You catch the highlights later, your friends
text you. I feel like NBA is almost just like
right now it's in it's a Twitter sport until you
get to the playoffs and in the finals, because it's
you know, how do people really want to do people
(07:28):
really care about you know, Nix and Hawks, even if
it's played on a fancy court in a fancy arena
in Las Vegas. No, you know, I didn't watch. I
didn't really you know, watch the game, but hey on Twitter,
so why should they be any more?
Speaker 1 (07:42):
Fired? Up about the Hawks and the Bucks exactly. So
that's that's a.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
You hope, like, Okay, you have Gianni's first Trey Young,
but you know, Troy Young is not the most appealing
player his style play, and you know, Giannis, he's not American,
and I guess that's a big deal with some American
and even on even on the Rockets thunderside, like Shay
is my favorite NBA player right now. But for you know,
just a casual NBA fane. You know, I understand that
(08:10):
you care more about watching Lebron James play or Luca
but even like NBA fans don't really like Jokic and
I think he's the best player in the league.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
So it's it's a problem that I don't know the
answer to.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
And I just wonder. It's December. You're trying to find
ways to get people interested. I mean, we're talking about it.
That's a step up. But again, the Lakers won the
tournament last year, Craig, and what happened in the playoffs
and lost in the first round.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of nd season tournaments.
It's just just something differently. They don't like it really
in hockey or soccer or whatever soccer. I think he's
a little bit different in that in that so the
the in season tournament, by the way, in that.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
In the champ you know, the Champions League is there
in CeON tournament. That's because that's that's all the best
teams in Europe, right, you know, So it's different because
in the regular season Premier League, you'll only play teams
in the Premier League. But with a Champs League of
Europa League or whatever, right, different playing you're playing you know,
you can be playing real or you know, the NBA
NA that you know, you're just playing your own league.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
So if the NFL did an end season thing, now it'd.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Be fun the NBA side, you know, maybe you final
way to incorporate I don't know FOBA somehow.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
But at the same time that would that would be
more intriguing to me, like would you you know, so,
if like last night the Bucks or the Hawks were
playing I don't know, the Seflakia national team, would you
care about it? Or if it was like the real
Madrid FOBA team, would you care about it? I mean,
because they're gonna blow them out, right, yeah, yeah, I
don't know. And then the whole day about the games
(09:40):
counting in the regular season standings, and you're like, yeah,
I stort really understand how any of that works. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
All right, up next, we're gonna hear from long worn
center Jake Majors, and we'll hear from Rodney Terry talking
Texas basketball when we continue here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone.
