going to roll back with some of my favorite Christmas music. Okay,
I think I had the list still from last year.

(01:36):
You probably do, So we're gonna we're gonna do that.
Uh and that would be that would be on the
twenty third. We're still twelve days or eleven days away
from that. But anyway, that's on down the road.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Let's hear some more from Longhorne hit Football Rich Steve
Sarcasian Sark was on The Rich Eisen Show and we
heard him last hour talking about his team, and let's
let's hear some more from riche Eason and Sark.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
You just describe the crazy world in which you live in,
but you and Texas are thriving in with nil and
portal and signing Day and conference championship and getting ready
for the college football playoffs, which is a reason why
a lot of people think only a certain type of
coach can be cut out for college football. What is
your thoughts, your two cents on Bill Belichick joining the

(02:27):
world of college football. He's now a college football coaching
colleague of youers Steve Sarkisian and North Carolina You what
are your thoughts on this?

Speaker 5 (02:35):
Fascinated. I'm fascinated by it. You know, obviously a ton
of respect for coach Belichick and the job he's done
his entire career. I think we've all we're all better
coaches quite frankly because of what he's been able to
do and studying him and whether it's offense, defense, you know,
management of rosters, all all the stuff, you know, and

(02:56):
obviously my time with coach Saban and the connection with
those two. But fascinating that that he's back now and
coming to college football and trying to implement some of
those things.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
There.

Speaker 5 (03:07):
So a ton of respect for the job he's done.
I'm sure he'll do a great job there. But but
I think from from most perspectives, and you know, I
don't I don't know everybody but ours in our building
for sure. It's fascinating to see and to watch and
and you know, how how is this how's this project
gonna go?

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Yeah? I know, right?

Speaker 4 (03:25):
Was he around when you were in Alabama? Did did
he show up on campus practices?

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Zooms? Or whatever with coach Saban.

Speaker 5 (03:34):
You know Pro days for sure, you know, he in
and out of the Pro Days. And and I actually had
a couple of conversations with him this offseason about our
schedule now, because I think our calendar and our schedule
is more you know, from a from a team perspective,
and a college football playoff perspective is a little more
NFL driven. And so I was trying to pick his
brain on that. I had no idea that he'd be

(03:55):
coming our way and getting into the college game.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Isn't that nuts?

Speaker 4 (04:00):
I mean, that is amazing how how life works sometimes.
Would you mind? What did he tell you? What insight
did you gain from him?

Speaker 5 (04:06):
Well, it was just more about here's a guy that's
you know what, year after year after year and had
these long stretches of a season right the preseason, the
regular season and year in and year out there and they're
in the super Bowl, the championship game, and how he
managed his team. And I think, you know, you talked
to a Bill Belichick and Andy Reid, you know, Sean McVay,

(04:27):
Kyle Shanahan, guys now that have you know, year in
and year out, been in those positions of just how
they manage the workloads of their roster and their team
and how they practiced and.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Got them ready to play.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
And so that was stuff I was trying to dig
into to make sure that we were in a really
good frame of mind and physically, mentally, emotionally come December,
and I think it's paid off for us.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Okay, And so do you listen.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
I know he's got a gajillion rings and things of
that nature, and he's been at it since nineteen seventy
five in the NFL. But this is you know, you're
you're the you're the college coach here with with experience
and success.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Do you have any advice for him? Now? If you
picked your brain, what would that be, Steve Hire? Good recruiters.
You know, it's not a laugh, that's for sure. It's
not a draft. It's not a draft.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
Ty you don't just get to you know, just it's
my pick and I got to get you. And now
you're under contract for four years with one plus right.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Doesn't work like that for us, that's for sure, okay.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Coach, Yeah, great advice there. I thought sark at first
was going to say something like, I'm not going to
give advice to Bill Belichick gives it. But that makes
sense though, hire good recruiters, which, by the way, brings
to mind does he bring in his son Steven? That

(05:50):
seems to be the popular speculation. Stephen Belichick the defensive
coordinator at the University of Washington and obviously used to
the recruiting game. I mean, I could see Belichick being
a closer, so to speak. You know, Mack Brown was
a really good closer after you had the other guys
get it to it. I think Sark is a closer.

(06:12):
But Sark is more active than that. He's out and
about and he's at games. He likes going to games
and watching games the ones that they're limited to to
go to because there is a limit that the NCAA
places on the total member of visits by a coaching staff.
So they have to and Sark has said this many times,

(06:33):
they have to be judicious about what games they're going
to see. They're in a non contact period right now
anyway with regard to that.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
So.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Getting beyond signing day, and he's trying to get a
football team ready to play in the college football Playoff,
which you know, this is that vicious cycle where you
need players to have a chance to play in the playoff.
But you've got to prepare a team to play in
the playoff. But you got to keep but eye on
the portal because that's going only are you going to

(07:04):
be They're down the just six active defensive linemen for
this game against Glenson with the portal opening up and
losing some some pieces to the defensive line. And let
me say this, they're also hosting.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
You know, they've had I think they have two recruits
on campus right now, yep, right or I don't know,
recruit what do you call it, uh transfer, portal recruit portal, yeah, portals, yeah, portalers, portals,
portal recruits maybe, I don't know. Uh so those tragents, Yeah,
those guys can come in. Obviously, that would be for

(07:39):
the program going forward in the future, would not be
for the remainder of this season. I think they'll be okay,
Like you said, six active defensive linemen for this And
let me say this, I understand why the guys have
to make the call that they do right now.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
There may be some long horn fans, but why couldn't
they wait till the end of the season, because cause
the door may and window may be closed for them
they might have a not have an opportunity to catch
on with another program. And Sarka has been really upfront
about this that if you are a player on his
roster and you've got and you're having thoughts about leaving,

(08:18):
you need to have that conversation with them. And they're
going to have all those conversations with these guys you
know who are thinking about leaving, and then once you
enter the portal, start essentially is done with you. Because
I know there are some things where some guys pull
their name back out of the portal, but they have

(08:40):
to kind of move on with that because once you
establish that you are in the portal, they have to
actively divert resources and energy to finding someone to take
your place. So that's why I understand it from the
player perspective on why if they're going to enter the
portal they need to do it earlier rather than later

(09:02):
so that they have a better chance of catching on
in a situation that they like. But from sark side
and the coaching and the programs side of it, if
that's the case and you're really seriously considering, you probably
ought to go ahead and go.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
And then you're out that kind of things.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
That's just kind of the way it works in college football,
especially for these successful programs.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
Yeah, I'm sure the coaches and the staff members met
with some of these players after the end of the season,
and you know, some of it could be, hey, I
want to go somewhere else, and some of its saying
it could be, hey, you know it might be more
beneficial to your career if you go somewhere else.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Yep, yep, it's a two way conversation. We'll be back
to wrap up our number two on sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone.
