Speaker 1 (00:06):
And we're back to the Craigway Show.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Have a message for Craig, share it by using the
talkback feature on the Iheartsradio.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Wapp here on a Thursday afternoon, headed toward long worn
basketball tonight at Moody Center against New Mexico State, we'll
hear from head coach Rodney Terry.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
In a few minutes.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
I mentioned Travis Hunter. Today was named the AP Player
of the Year. In AP College Football Player of the Year,
he received twenty six out of forty three votes from
the panel of the AP top twenty five voters. Ashton Genty,
(00:45):
the Boise State tailback from Frisco, Texas out of Frisco
lone Star, finished second. He had sixteen votes. Cam Scataboo,
who I mentioned earlier, the Arizona State running back, picked
up one vote as well. But I guess you know
the biggest thing about Travis Hunter and why I think
he's gonna win the Heisman Trophy is being the two
(01:06):
way player that throwback. You know, he can be a receiver,
he can be a lockdown corner. He's on the field
a lot. I get all that. I just said that
I don't think he was the offensive player of the
year because the offensive numbers his offensive numbers, and neither
were Shader Sanders numbers. I don't think we're more impressive
(01:29):
and valuable to the team than Skataboos was for Arizona State.
But respect the numbers and the overall package of what
Travis Hunter presents, I understand why he's probably gonna win
the Heisman even though Ashton Genty is on a record
setting tear of what he's doing for Boise State. I
(01:49):
also get that probably a lot of Heisman voters came
were probably looking this going, yeah, you know, but who
did he do it against? You know, Yeah, there was
the game against a Well. Other than that, I mean,
he still had all of these two hundred yard rushing games.
I mean, it's what Greg Davis used to say when
he was the Texas offensive coordinator when Colt McCoy would
(02:12):
complete like eleven consecutive passes. He goes, if you complete
eleven in a row against air, you're doing good. So
I think Ashton Genty's numbers are impressive enough, even though
they probably aren't enough to impress enough people who look
at the bigger, overall big conference picture.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
Yeah, I think Genty probably deserves I don't know. You
could argue for the Walter Camp Award. Yeah, obviously the
Doak Walker Award. If you want to throw in the
Maxwell Ward, sure, but the Heisman, and this always gets
back to, okay, what is the you know award supposed
to mean, Like with the MVP, it's the most valuable player,
(02:50):
right that to the team, to the league. You know,
it always up for debate for Heisman. I think what
we're seeing with Travis Hunter, it just hasn't been done.
We've never seen a player play both sides of the ball.
And if you want to say Desmon Howard, sure, but
I mean he had what like his offensive snaps the
year he won the Heisman were under fifty right, Yeah,
(03:11):
so he was a tremendous player. Travis Hunter. He plays
both sides the entire game. He's you know, he's had
multiple games with a touchdown in interception there and there
won't be another player like him, I don't think for
a long time. So if I had, if I had
a Heisman vote, I would vote for Travis Hunter. With
the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Doak Walker, I would vote for
Ashton gent D. But Skattaboy's got a good argument as well.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yeah, yeah, he does. I uh, I think a better
comparison with Travis Hunter would be Charles Woodson.
Speaker 5 (03:38):
When yeah, sorry, not has Howard Woodson?
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Okay, all right, well Howard.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
Has Yeah, but Woodson was the one that he got.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
All both sides. Yeah, uh huh. I would have probably
said Woodson. But remember when he won it, everybody thought
Peyton Manning was going to get it. Yeah, and he
didn't get it. All right, let's hear some more from
Longhorns head basketball chrich Rodney Terry heard from him last hour,
first part of this leading up to tonight's game with
New Mexico State, and also the state of his basketball
(04:06):
team right now, So more from our te.
Speaker 6 (04:10):
Good morning, our tee. Hey appreciate the punctuality as always.
I like it. You know, Tremont Mark's been back, you know,
a couple of weeks now. You know, what can you
guys do to get him going offensively? And do you
see him at some point? It's kind of that third option,
you know, behind Columa and Trey.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Yes, Thomas, really good question.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
You know, I think again, anytime you miss four weeks,
you know, and in particular in Treymon's case, you know,
Treymont didn't have much of a summer because he had
things he had to get done from an academic standpoint,
and then and then he gets into the early part
of the fall and he missed it seven days of
practice and it's hurt the first day of practice with
(04:53):
the growing and so you have a very limited time
with him over time with this grew. So I think
there was a time prior to just to his injury
that I thought that he had made up a lot
of ground in terms of hall heart.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
We needed him to play on both ends of the floor.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
I think once he had that injury, just like anything,
it's gonna take some time for him to come back
and get back in the floor and get going again
a little bit. I do think he had his best
practice today after our Ucome game, where I thought he
played with the.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Kind of energy and activity that we need him.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
To play with, play in and play out, whether it
be on offensive defense. I thought he was really, really good.
I thought it was his best practice of the year.
And if we can get him to a point to
where he's consistently doing that, you know, every day, it's
no doubt in my mind that he could definitely be
a guy that gives us a lot of scoring ability
(05:54):
and possibly a third score to go with those guys
that are big, consistent night in the night out to
this point right now.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Coach Cherry, good afternoon.
Speaker 7 (06:03):
So when you think about the longevity of this team
and going deep into in March and what's needed to
go and compete at that high level, is there any
emphasis today on several of the players scoring double digits?
Is that even a I know you're a defense minded,
but does double digits ever play into that And because
(06:25):
it's gonna probably be required to get deep into the March.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
No, for sure, Terry, I think again a great point.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
You know, we still obviously have a really good New
Mexico State team to play tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
I think that, you know, I've.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Got a lot of respect for it, for their coach
Jason Hood, and how hard they play it, how hard
they compete. Uh, he's got power five size and he's
got guys that are older players. So we'll have our
hands full come tomorrow with the quality ball club coming
in here.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
But but to your point.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
I think the thing that I've tried to rest to
our guys right now over the course of the next
week and a half that we have with them prior
to our break and then coming back even prior to
conference play, is that we've got to We've got to
have a great sense of urgency. We don't have to
play perfect on offense. I'm never gonna ask guys to
play perfect on defense, but we have to have a
(07:21):
sense of urgency on how hard we play every possession.
And I think if you can get your team to
compete at that kind of level on every possession, I
think it gives youself a chance from an offensive standpoint.
You know, again, I think we're growing, We'll continue to grow,
but we spend time working on it. You know, after
(07:42):
the Ucon game, in terms of our pace, our pace
is not where it needs to be right now. From
an offensive standpoint, our cutting is not worth where it
needs to be at at this point right now. And
again I put the ownership on myself in that regards,
and I said to our guys, I'm gonna do a
better job of teaching and work with you guys.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Or how hard we have to cut.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Spacing we have to have in the ball movement, player movement,
we have to have offensive because I do believe that
we can be a really good offensive team.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
I think we're a fast team. I think when we're.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Able to get out and play and transition, I think
it helps our defense. I think it helps I think
it helps us play with urgency.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Because now we got a little pop about us and stuff.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
But I do think we're a team that can score
the basketball, and we'll be to score the basketball.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
And we've got a.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Gauntlet of a league this year where every night you're
gonna have to bring your a game on offense and
defense and try to sit down and play with a
high sense of urgency for forty minutes.
Speaker 8 (08:41):
Hey, coach, I wanted to talk to you a little
bit about your rotation and how do you come up
with the mindset of how many I mean, which guys
are gonna play with each other on the court and
finding out who is the proper match for each other
depending on the matchup. I guess it plays a lot
into it. But just trying to find that rhythm them
that you were talking about that you are looking for
(09:02):
right now, well, I.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Think it's been a work in progress.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
I think, you know, we started the year with the lineup,
you know, our first scrimmage against TCU, uh, the lineup
that we're starting right now, you know, and we got
off to a great start first couple, first game, and
then and then we have an injury and a setback
with Traymont for four for four weeks. And so Kendall
did a nice job getting in and doing what he
(09:26):
does in.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Terms of being a start in his role.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
And then and then you get Treymont back. You have
Jason Kent, who started out.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
The year, uh, you know, coming in and being a
guy that we can ly off the bench. Uh, as
our first big off the bench. And uh, he gets
injured and uh, you know we're still work working on
you know, his recovery and opportunity to be to come
back and hopefully join us at some point as well
and everything. But you talk about your rotation, you know,
(09:54):
we had a pretty good rotation with the way we
we had it going at one point, but we still
haven't had you know, give a take our top nine
nine guys that you know available to play this season
in a game. Yet so uh to me and in
my mind, you know, you you have two guards, you
have two bigs, and and then you have a fifth
and sixth guy past that point ready to go.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Uh and everything.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
So you know, we're the kind of team that likes
to pressure up the four, so we could play ten
guys uh as well, But we haven't been able to
really kind of sell into that because we haven't had
everybody all available in every game to this point right now.
So you know, we get you know, Trey mont back
and we lose kid.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
You know.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
So, you know, Ken's a valuable guy to our team.
He's a guy that has a lot of experience. He's
a guy that's a cerebral player.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
He's a physical body. Uh. He rebounds, and.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
He's one of the one of the elite cutters in
all of college basketball. He could cut twice on the
office of possession and make our office possession look really good.
We'll miss that from him right now. You know, he
can get a second chance opportunity on the glass for us.
He can make a three point shop for us.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
You know.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
But but but you lose that a little bit in
terms of that rotation, and you know, so you know,
to be honest with you, in games, sometimes it kind
of just depends.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
We tried to go with a small line up the
other day and it wasn't very good for us.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
That we had to go to a big lineup the
other day, off the bench, away from our first unit.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Uh and everything.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
So you know, hopefully, you know, Lord blessed, we'll have
everybody you know available at someone where we can settle
in on that really good rotation the way we want it.
You know, in a perfect world, you love to be
a to have them. You know, we were too deep
in every position, you know. But but but we're not
right now, We're still down one.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
The comments of Rodney Terry, the Long Horns head coach,
with that media assumed that he had yesterday leading into
tonight's matchup against New Mexico State. Uh, the Long Horns
and Aggies New Mexico State aggies, I think there is
in Division one athletics. Let me think about this for
a moment. Help me if I'm if I'm incorrect on
(12:07):
this camp. I think there are four sets of aggies
in Division one basketball. Can you name the four?
Speaker 5 (12:16):
Utah State, A and M, New Mexico.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
State and and and so what's the fourth? Their Division
one in basketball, but not in football football they're in
HBCU mmm mmmm, that's a really good trivia question from
my hometown.
Speaker 7 (12:37):
U n C G.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
No, your hometown.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yes, from Greensboro, North Carolina. But it's not UNCG. There's
another school in there. It's an HBCU.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
What's the what's the other school in un CG. It's
not Guildford.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
No, they're Division three. Hit me with it, North Carolina
A and T T the aggies of A and T
blue and gold. But they're they're there. It's it's funny
looking at the different the mascots. They're all different. Especially
I've kind of forgotten what you toss State.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
There's a U that's that you lost to you?
Speaker 3 (13:14):
New Mexico State has this dude and a cowboy hat
with a pistol out. So that's the closest thing.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
Ain't him as a dog?
Speaker 4 (13:21):
Reason?
Speaker 1 (13:22):
No, they've got that.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
What's that what's the character's name, Old Sarge, the one
with the trooper hat on? Uh for the A and
M logo, there's that. I saw a lot of when
I was in college station for the football game. I
saw a lot of folks wearing hoodies. You know how
long worn fans have taken them wearing these hoodies with
angry bevo on it, the screaming bevo or or some
of the other belos. Yeah, well, I saw a lot
(13:44):
of Aggies wearing a maroon hoodie that had the Old
Sarge logo on it, where he's got the where he's
got the hat on the old Trooper and he's got
he's got the hat on. Uh, there's that. So it's
a little bit different. New Mexico State dude just looks
like a rancher or a cowboy or or whatever. And
he's got his pistol drawn as well. North Carolina A
and T. They're Aggie. It's a bulldog. It kind of
(14:06):
looks like the Georgia Bulldog to be exact. If it
really means if you look at the logos, it's similar
to the Georgia Bulldog. So the bulldog is their logo,
but it's yeah, it's North Carolina A and T. So
there's four sets of Aggies there on that. This particular
Aggie team that goes in at four and five actually
(14:30):
has a better per average scoring total than its opponent,
which means in their losses they've taken some lopsided losses obviously,
but they out rebound their opponents. They do commit more turnovers,
and they're a middle of the road free throw shooting team,
(14:51):
and they're you know, not a real good field goal Percentageam,
but they could shoot the three a little bit, So
that's something that the log worms w have to beful of.
It's good to see the continued process and progress of
certain guys on this team, and I think of three
in particular, Jordan Pope, Tremon Mark and Julian Larry. Now
(15:14):
we know what Kenda Weaver can do. We know obviously
Trey Johnson has shown what he can do. He's averaging
number twenty one a game. We know what Arthur Kaluma
is capable of, and we know clearly what Cayden Shederick
can do. And even Zara kon Yema has made some
strides off of that. But the deal with looking at
(15:35):
Tremon Mark, who got the late start because of the
ankle sprain, Jordan Pope has really stepped up his game
last couple of ball games, and Julian Larry we saw
him do the same thing. He played an important part
in the winning Raleigh over North Carolina State. So keep
an eye on those guys as well tonight. Well, they
have more coming up here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
under his own of the iHeartRadio app
