School Football State Championships. He's called two games today, one more,
but he'll join us in about fifteen to twenty minutes.
Flyve from Arlington, Texas. Get his thoughts on what he's seen.
(00:20):
Six man football a lot of fun if you watch it,
especially in person. Craig will be out Tomorrow and Friday.
Some quick programming notes for you. I will be hosting
Friday show Tomorrow will be Andrew Simmle or six Man
coming in. He will be hosting for tomorrow show, but
Craig will be with him at various times and same
(00:41):
thing on Friday. On Friday, some quick programming notes as well.
Eric Henry from Horns Too for seven will stop by
and we're going to have a special insider on the
Clemson side of things. Also joining us on Friday show.
The preview Texas and Clemson gonna be a fantastic game,
fantastic environment, sold out crowd. Austin Hannen of Clemson two
(01:04):
four to seven will join us Friday as well. I
wanted to talk to you guys about a couple key
storylines in this game. I asked ours, I asked j Vogel,
you know what are they looking for in this game
that's going to help the side the outcome of this game?
And I think a couple things stand out to me.
And the first thing is exposed to place from both sides.
(01:28):
Texas offense second in the country with ninety one plays
of twenty twenty yards or more, Tenth in the country
in plays of thirty yards or more. Their Texas offense,
Sark is great at those big plays. Even though maybe
maybe Texas fans don't have the deep ball as much
(01:48):
as they would like. Sark is great at scheming up
those plays twenty or thirty yards or more. Cops an offense,
what about them, well, not too shabby, Eleventh in the
country in plays of twenty yards are more six in
plays where they go thirty yards or more so two
offenses with two offenses that are capable of creating exposedive plays.
(02:12):
But what about defensively? Texas defense first and limiting plays
of twenty yards or more and thirty yards are more.
There's no other defense in the country that is better
at stopping exposive plays than the Texas Longhorns. What about
Clemson one third in eighty third Clemson defense, Well, the
(02:37):
offense is good at exposive plays, the defense is not
at limiting them. So something to keep an eye out
for is the exposed to play a battle. I think
for Clemson to be able to not just win this game,
but even compete in it is their ability to manufacture
big plays twenty thirty yards or more. Film offa their
star running back shoulder injury played against SMU. Do not
(03:01):
have a good game. He needs shoulder surgery. After the
season he will play. Jay Haynes is out. So Clemson,
like Texas, pretty banged up at the running back position. Now,
of course, they do have a running quarterback adul threat
quarterback in Kate club Neck. Texas does not with equin yours,
so that will help him a lot. But Tigers team
(03:22):
that needs explosive plays. I think to be able to
compete in this game, I'm gonna have to do it
with a lot of passing attack. Maybe it's gonna be
Kadi Clubnick able to great plays with his legs. Expect
to see a lot of Antonio Williams. But if Texas
able to take away Clemson's downfield attack. I don't see
how the Tigers are going to be able to win
(03:42):
this game because I do not think they will be
able to run against the Texas defensive front. I just
do not see it happening. They've had some good games
here and there, but in games against good defenses, they
have struggled. Georgia, Louisville, South Carolina. You look at the
teams in terms of sp plus metric, the metric for ESPN,
and when they face defenses in the top twenty. Georgia
(04:05):
eleventh overall in defensive sp plus lost thirty four to three.
South Carolina twelfth, lost seventeen to fourteen. Two games right there,
Two games right there, facing a top twenty defense in
the country, Clemson combined for seventeen total points. I think
they'll be lucky to get the seventeen against Texas on Saturday,
they get the twenty, maybe they win. This might be
(04:27):
the first team the twenty who wins this game. Considering
how banged up and nicked up the Texas offenses in
terms of quen you weers injury now, CJ. Faluk, would
they tell us earlier in the show that the brace
is off he is about as close to one hundred
percent as he has been sends the injury before before
Louisiana Monroe. So we'll see. We'll see on that. Kelvin
(04:49):
Banks probably will start, will be limited, isay a Bond?
That one scares me the most because if he does play,
he'll be very limited. But I think Texas is missing
his ability to take the top off the defense, his
vertical threat, being able to take the ball all the
backfield and run. Texas has been missing that for quite
some time. They need him to be one hundred percent.
(05:11):
I think to be able to win a national championship.
It's not about Quinn Newrs. I think it's about Isaiah
Bond being able to be healthy in the helpout Sark
offensively and take some pressure off of Quinn and the
rushing attack. But going back to Clemson, when they're facing
these top defenses, they've struggled. They have struggled now SMU
twenty six in sp plus thirty one to thirty three.
(05:32):
They put up thirty points in that game, a lot
of scoring towards the very end. As SMU was able
to come back that Mustang is able to put some
points up on Clemson's defense. What about Texas where they
ranked second second. So the closest thing to the Texas
defense that Clemson has faced this season. They have scored
(05:53):
three points in fourteen points against and now they're facing
them on the road. The AKR sold out crowd line
is eleven and a half. For a reason here, folks,
do not overthink it. Special teams. I think it's gonna
be a key point in this game because both special
teams on both sides have been stinky this season. Texas
(06:14):
one to fifteenth in special teams sp plus Clemson ninety ninth.
I mean, I think you know they had like a
walk on kicker at some point. Maybe they still do.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Nolan Hawser is their field goal kicker. He's been seventy
three percent this season. He's one of four between forty
and forty nine yards. He is two and two plus fifty.
Keep that in mind, Burt Auburn, see they mention it.
You know, we thought last year was gonna win the
Luke Rose Award for Best kicker. This season, not in
the race at all. Sixty six percent field goal rate
(06:44):
this year between forty and forty nine, six of eleven
beyond fifty zero for two. I feel like on the
right hash mark, if it's past forty, he's gonna miss it.
I don't know what the deal is with that. He
was so good last season. I don't know where what
has changed between last year and this year for bert Auburn.
But again, I think the two X factors for Texas
(07:07):
in this playoff run, it's not Quinn yours, guys. I
think it's Isaiah Bond's health and if bert Auburn can
make a field goal, because Texas could be an SEC
champion and have an extra week to prepare for a
college football game. If bert Auburn knocks down one of
two field goals, and of course there was the false
start on Malik Acbo that pushed Texas back five yards
after or Auburn missed made the first one, that missed
(07:28):
the second one. A lot of reasons why Texas last game,
not just Burt Auburn, but not having a reliable field
goal kicker has been hurting Texas so far this season.
So there's the health part of it. I mentioned Haines
in film offa for Clemson being dinged up. The special
team's part of it as well, the defensive part of
it and then the exposive plays the last thing and
(07:50):
this might just be the old journalist part in me
is the quarterback battle Kate Klebnick Quin Yours. I mean,
it's a fun storyline. Guys, come on south Lake Carrol
Firus west Lake. West Lake beat south Lake Carrol when
Clubbing was the quarterback at west Lake and when Quinn
was the quarterback of south Lake Carol, the won the
state championship game. Cade commits to Clemson, obviously, spends all
(08:13):
of his time in college at Clemson, desig nder the portal.
He comes back, Quinn goes Wilas State. He comes back
back to back playoff appearances for Quinn Yours Kate club
Nick his first playoff appearance. It's a fun storyline. It's
a fun storyline. And in for Kay club Knick, he
gets to come back home and play Texas of course
for the first time. And so club Nick was asked
about it two days ago on Monday, about returning to
(08:37):
his hometown of aunts In to play in the college
football playoff.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Yeah, obviously, I've had a you know, quite a bit
A few people reach out to me in the last
week and a half. I think, like last Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,
just kind of kind of embrace it and kind of
just got to sit there and enjoy just the feeling of, Hey,
I'm getting to go home, and you know, the guys
I'm going to be playing and the people that are
gonna be there, and just kind of enjoyed that for
(09:03):
one or two days, and uh, and then after that, uh,
really just kind of set my mind on the task
at hand, you know. And it's it's one thing to
kind of know where you're gonna be playing, but at
the end of the day, you know that the ball
is gonna get set and you got to go focus
on job, job right in front of you. So kind
of enjoyed it for a little bit and then locked
(09:24):
in on the people were playing and and really just
focused on on the team that we're playing. And that's
that's kind of been my mindset since last Tuesday. And
but obviously excited to go home. I think that you know,
I've kind of drifted away and really just kind of
focus on the preparation that comes with it since then.
But I think once I get there, you know, it'll
(09:46):
definitely be a little a little while, you know, flying
into that airport and making that drive and stuff, and yeah,
it'll be cool.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
It's gonna be a fun, fun game for k club Man.
Gonna be fun to see him interact with my Taff
who one of his closest friends, and now instead of
being teammates like they were in high school, going to
be opponents, rivals on the football field. On Saturday, three
o'clock kickoff, two o'clock Network coverage begins to Craig Way,
Roger Wallas. Our coverage begins at noon myself, Mike Hardball, Harge,
(10:18):
and Mark Henry Longhordon's Game Day live on Beevill Boulevard
right here on AM thirteen hundred to zone up. Next,
we've got Craig Way calling in from Jerry World.
