Speaker 1 (00:00):
Greg, I want you to know I chose this particular title,
this is it by Kenny Lowkins, because this is it
for handful of state title teams this week. That's all
it is, right, yep.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Now, well, now we're down the ten games left. There's
been the first two games here in Arlington and Jerry
World have been completed and in abbreviated fashion, you might say,
and that's exactly what we kind of thought. What happened.
The one A six man Division two game kicked off
at eleven o'clock this morning. The Jay and j Birds
(00:33):
won it in you could say, run rule fashion, forty
five point mercy rule. They blew out Oakwood to win
in the first game and had it done by halftime.
The second game, which featured Gordon, the defending champions in
one A six man Division one, built a big lead
(00:56):
against White Face, who continued to push back and they
got some school, but they just couldn't stop Gordon. By halftime.
It was a forty point lead at the half. At
fifty let's see, I guess it was sixty sixty to
twenty four, so I guess it was a thirty six
point lead a half or something like that. But anyway,
(01:16):
they were up. It was sixty four to twenty four.
They were up by forty. So the director saying to
us in our headsets, how much longer do you think
this game goes? And Granger Huntress, the six man guru
who worked with me on the telecasts, in one play
and that's exactly what happened. There was the kickoff, they
tried an onside kick and white faced it and Gordon
(01:38):
Feller on the very next play striker Ree went forty
five yards per touchdown. That was that. So two forty
five point mercy rule games and your first two state
champions crowned are Jaydon the jay Birds from the South
Plains in six man Division two, and then in six
man Division one in Class one A the Gordon Longhorns,
making it back to back Stone title. So the six
(02:01):
man games have been contested, completed and they're now getting
the field ready for the rest of the weekend, which
will be eleven man games starting tonight with what we're
calling cam the beer Cheese Bowl, a China against Munster.
So we're saying it's the beer Cheese Bowl, but it'll
be Shiner and Munster. In the two day Division two game,
(02:22):
tonight at seven.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Well, awesome congrats to Jayden and Gordon on their state championships.
If you could estimate real time, how long do those
games take?
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Well, the first game took about an hour twenty five minutes,
and the second game took a little longer than that
because there was a twenty minute half time. But I
will tell you this. Here's the crazy numbers. I think
I mentioned this during the week that Gordon out of
fourteen games, they'd played fourteen games, so that means a
possible fifty six quarters of football. They had only played
(02:54):
thirty one quarters because they had mercy ruled everybody except
Habot last week in the semi finals. Wow, so they
wind up playing only thirty three out of sixty possible quarters.
Not only that, they scored. I think about this. They
ran sixteen plays in the first half. That's all sixteen plays,
(03:16):
and they average over seventeen yards per play. They had
sixty four points on the board, so they averaged four
points per snap, four points per play, and they wound
up running only seventeen plays, so that average went up afterwards,
winning seventy to twenty four. It was some mind boggling
(03:37):
numbers put up by Gordon in that second game.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
That's a fantastic nugget. Thirty one quarters. I mean, those
boys were ready to go and they want to keep playing.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Well, they have two guys. Several guys are good, but
they have two guys whose last name is Red and
they're not related. The head coach's name is Reid and
he's not related to him. Striker read and Ryland or
RYE Reid as they call him. Ry Reid, by the way,
has a scholarship offer from North Texas. He's that dangerous
(04:08):
and he was named the defensive MVP, but he was
our jacket the box player of the game because he
also ran for ninety nine yards in three touchdowns on
the offensive side, which kind of dovetails into what we're
going to see tomorrow night, obviously, with Grayson Rigden moving
to Columbus after three straight years of dominating six men
and he's rushed for almost two thousand yards and that'll
(04:28):
be tomorrow night. So there's a lot of good football up.
But do you see some eye popping.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Numbers with the six man striker Read, Now that's a
football name, that's a football Well, why of course, R?
Why k E R? Striker Actually you mentioned the Beard
Cheese Bowl Munster Shiner seven o'clock. That game is going
to start on FANDO Sports Network. What are you looking
forward to in that matchup? The two way Division two
state title game.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
It's a contrast. Munster is much more conventional and the
son of the head coach. You got a coach's kid
playing at quarterback, and that makes a big difference. Shiner
is a throwback. You remember the last time you saw
somebody run a beer offense. Veer run the veer. They
run a split back veer offense. So you know, option football.
(05:17):
It's a throwback certainly when you see the smaller classifications.
And I think that's part of what makes this such
a really cool event is because you see different you know,
town size of small groups, little big bands come in,
you know for some of these schools, and then teams
run they'll run wishbone or they'll run veer offense in
(05:37):
this case, so you'll see a lot of that, and
then is it. You know, as it moves on out,
you'll see more pro spread and you'll see a lot
more of other things too, and so it makes it
makes a big difference. You'll see a lot of different
offensive looks as the classifications grow larger.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Three games tomorrow Stanford, Gnado and two A Division one
eleven Gun sure Woodville at three pm three A Division
two and then seven pm three Division one Mallen Coffers, Columbus,
who of course features Grayson Rigdon, the NC State commit
who I believe is going for Will this be his
fourth state championship ring or.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
It will be as it will be his four state
championship ring because he won. He won at his third
different school by the way, So he won one it's
a freshman, and was the state championship MVP at Strawn
and six man. Then he won back to back at
Benjamin where he won offensive MVP in twenty twenty two.
Last year he won offensive and defensive MVP for Benjamin.
(06:38):
So he has three state championship rings and four state
championship game MVP awards three offense, one defense and then
and then so we'll see as he transitions to eleven Manamar.
By the way, he was offered by NC State. He
signed with Wyoming on signing day. Oh wow. So yeah,
(06:58):
so he's winding up one mountain. So he ended up
signing with Wyoming. So so that's one six man guy
who's got a D one ride and like I said,
Ry Reid who's just a junior. He has one more
seasonal with Gordon, has an offer on the table from
North Texas and h and just about all of that
Gordon team is coming back, so they're going to be
a prohibitive favor to make it a three peat next year.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
So four rings on three different teams. What does that
call the Robert Horry. I'm trying to think of anyone
that has won. Yeah, has one at least four with
three different teams.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah, Yeah, that's that's something else. He's been a star
Wars going to I think the most impressive thing that
he has done is he has melded with his teammates. Well,
he did it when he went to Benjamin and now
he's done it at the eleven Man. There are a
lot of people that looked at him a little suspiciously
and thought, well, he's all about himself. In truth, the
(07:53):
parent his parents did one. His dad, Jamie Rigdan, who
had been a coach at Strawn, wanted to get him
more visibility of the to enable him to have an
opportunity to get a college scholarship. Well it worked, first
he got offered by air Force, then he got offered
by NT State, and then he got offered by one Wyoming,
and he accepted the offer and signed with Wyoming. So yeah,
(08:15):
it's and he has just molded in nicely. Remember Columbus
was preseason number two in the state, behind the team
they're playing tomorrow night in the title round, Malakoff. Malakoff
won the state title last year. And they got a
veteran team and a good quarterback in Mike Jones. So
but then you've got you know, the showbl family with
(08:39):
Matt Shobel as the head coach, Aaron Shoble, both of
them played in the NFL. They both played at TC,
they both played in the NFL. You have Adam Shobel
is the quarterback and John Shobel plays on the defensive side.
And they have one of the best restaurants in South
central Texas. You'll find if you go to Showbules Restaurant
right there off Highway seventy one in Columbus.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
So you're at Jerry rold At and T Stadium. I'm
curious when you're walking around, have you seen the tours?
Have you taken a tour? Have you spoken to what
the holograph of Jerry Jones. What's going on up there?
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Now? It's kind of quiet on that. They pretty much
have the AT and T staff running things. I will
tell you this, however, as I speak to you right now,
I'm in what's called the Founders Club Lounge, which is
right near where the Network TV booth is and all
that sort of stuff. So it's right there. But there's
like this big long bar and it's unattended. There's no
(09:37):
alcohol served at the UI Elevents, but there's this big
long bar. And if you walk up to the bar,
they have tumblrs for sale. YETI tumblers, would you hear? A?
Guess what the Dallas Cowboys YEDTI tumbler goes for.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
So the logo is on it, the Dallas Cowboy logo
on it.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Yep, it's got that D on it. Remember when Tom
Landry used to wear that hat with the D on
the the on the royal blue hat. Always thought that
was pretty classy look. And I like that cap. All
it has is that block letter D on it. No
cowboy logo, no, no star, no, you know that cartoon
initial looking thing with the dude on the horse. None
of that. It's just got the block letter D. It's
(10:16):
really really kind of a cool looking yetti. You know
what it goes for. Take a guess sixty? Yeah, hey,
you're pretty good. It's fifty five dollars. Fifty five dollars
and from what I'm told, fifty five dollars. And that
doesn't include what you would put in it. So if
you got a beverage in it, it would it would
cost me. But it's but it's fifty five dollars.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
See what I did there. I think a normal one
goes for about thirty So I just figured Jerry math
is just double it.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
He just double it, right, I think I think I
was told the one at the Long Worn Games goes
for forty dollars, but that comes filled with a beverage.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's a better deal and a
better logo and a winning team.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
This was fifty five dollars empty. So yeah, so we
are in the land of the fifteen dollars chicken sandwich.
Well it is a chicken sandwich, so you need to
know that. So yeah, we're here. And I did make
this comment on the air that as the game of
course ended, and I mentioned that they didn't have to
(11:17):
worry about the sunlight issues that started to come through
right now. It didn't get to that point because Gordon
finished the job and by the time Munster and Shiner
kick off, it'll be dark. It'll be seven o'clock.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Craig, I'm worried for your safety. If you make that
comment on the air again, just saying I'm worried for you.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
He might come and kind of fire me and get
somebody else in there.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Yeah, he might try and threaten you for that or
before I let you go. Is the medium mill is that?
Does this still cost money if you're a media member
to eat there? Because last time was there?
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yeah? Yes, But fortunately the FanDuel Sports Network crew, you know,
they take care of the TV crew. And so after
we get done with this, I'm going to go downstairs
grab whatever it is they've got. It's usually like box
lunches or something like that. And they do have the meal, yes,
and they do charge for it upstairs in the press box.
(12:08):
Your memory serves you well.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Okay, Texas basketball last night, of course you called the
woman's inaction defeeding lessal and I thought it was interesting, Craig.
We heard we heard quote Schaeffer and the post team
talk about how in Fick and the pregame talking about
how they weren't happy with the level effort in practice,
and we saw that with the labs that were displayed
last night.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
He used eleven players in the first half an all score.
So yeah, yeah, so he wasn't real happy with what
he's seen. But I think he also realizes because I
asked him about the fatigue element of all the travel
and that's when he said, well, we're going to see
what we have to night because we did to have
a good practice yesterday. So I know he was unhappy
about that, and Blair Shafer mentioned it as well. She
(12:53):
said on the post game, you know, hey, we'll get
five out there who can give us the heart and
the effort that we need because we're not going to
We're not going to coach hart. We'll coach your mind,
but we are not going to coach the heart of
these players going out there. So we'll see if if
that is going forward, where it goes from there.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
All right, Craig Way. You can hear the night seven
o'clock on the Fan Dual Sports Network, the third game
of the UIL Texas Football State Championships, Munster First Shiner
in the Beer Cheese Boll Craig, I'll be out tomorrow,
but I know you'll be visiting with Andrew Simmel, and
then I'll talk to you Friday as we get closer
and closer to kick off between Texas and Clemson.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Yeah, well, we'll look forward to that. I'll check it
resemble tomorrow, We'll look forward to the weekend.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Appreciate it all right, Thank you, Greg Way checking in
from AT and T Stadium as the Texas High school
football state championships run the way, of course, if you
want to be able to watch that, the fan Dual
Sports Network formerly known as Bally Sports formerly known as
Fox for something from me. I've lost track about ten
different ten different names, I think, but again, seven o'clock Monster,
(14:02):
First Shinea. We're gonna hear more from Julian Larry and
Brown of Preston as The Craigway Show continues your final
hour of Wednesday's program,
