Speaker 1 (00:00):
What a night for Jordan Pope, the transfer guard from
Oregon State, a new Moody Moody Center single single game
scoring record, eclipsing Marcus Carr, who scored forty one against
Texas A and M Commerce back in twenty twenty two,
the seventh most in Texas history, fourth most overall in
(00:20):
a home game. I believe Slater Martin has a record
with forty nine points. And the funny thing about it was,
and by the way, Texas did win against University of
New Orleans ninety eight sixty two, one more home game
before conference play begins. The funny thing about Jordan Pope's
forty two points, So I believe, and Bob Blue had
(00:41):
this tweet last night that I think Pope had one
maybe one point or one bucket with like six minutes
ago in the first half, got six thirty to go
in the first half. Pope at one point he didn't
have his first field goal into the six twenty two
mark the first half and then would go on the
(01:02):
score forty two points. There was a moment in the
second half where I was like, okay, I should probably
you know, he hit a couple back to back shots.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
I was like Okay, you know he's up to twenty.
You know what's his career high? Thirty one?
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Okay, I did not know that we were going to
be looking up what is the Moody High, the Texas High?
All of that in special things to Scott McConnell, the
Texas sid who assisted our radio broadcast, to Roger Wallason,
Eddie Orn by the way, you heard them on SEC
Network plus last night on the call the multi cast.
But Pope fifteen to twenty one, eight to twelve from
beyond the arc, career high, four or five from from
(01:35):
the three throw line thirty three minutes the career highs
and field Wald have made three pointers made and those
eight three pointers were too shy of a Texas record.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
What a scoring night for Jordan Pope.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
And we now, obviously it's been two games without Trey Johnson,
without and Jason Kent's been out for a little bit.
We're krying to see, Okay, who's going to step up offensively?
Can Texas maybe find some more rhythm? We know what
Arthur Kloom is going to do every game. We know
what Trey Johnson's going to do. Okay, what about the
other scores? Tremon Marx, Trey Johnson, Juan Larry, Kayden Schenerick,
Nick Cody who's had a couple of really good games.
(02:08):
And for Pope build to do this, I think gives
RTI a little bit more confidence about his offense going
forward because they've got four at least four guys who
are capable scores, and it's probably more than that. But
Trey Johnson can get his bucket when he needs to,
Jordan Pope can do that. Arthur Khaluoma has been fantastic
this season. What a what a portal find for RTI
(02:32):
and his staff. But they able to see this from
from Jordan Pope and Tremon and Mark two also a
capable score. Feel good about the Texas offense. It's just
can they, you know, establish that chemistry throughout conference play?
And defensively, can they play hard defensively because against Yukon,
now they know they should the ball, shoot the ball
wall at all against Yukon in that first half. But also,
(02:53):
I mean Alex Carabank did whatever he wanted to against
Texas for most of that game. So defensively, can they
figure stuff out? Wanted to bring to you Roger Wallace's
postgame interview with Jordan Pope after setting that career high
forty two points last night in the victory against New Orleans.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
First of all, at what point do you feel like
you're kind of in one of those offensive grooves?
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Hear me, Oh, I know, I mix my first couple
of shots. My teammates just told me to keep soon.
And after I hit a few, you know, my teammates.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Be beating me the ball.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
You know, they gave me the most confidence. I just
kept going.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
In a game like this, it seemed like a game
of runs. You guys get out to the big lead,
then they cut it to six. You get the big
league before the half, and then they have a good start.
I mean your points were also really important to get
that separation.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
Know we went to have time.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Not too happy with ourselves, you know, we feel like
we let the game kind of stick around. We weren't
we weren't doing our job on a defensive end. So
we were really trying to hang our heads on that.
And we came out, we entered the bell, and we
stopped any run they went on.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Rtie always talks about it.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
You played the defensive end and then the offensive end.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Takes care of itself.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
How is that transition from from Oregon State to Texas
and the way they play, how's that been going for you?
Speaker 4 (04:07):
Oh? You know, we, like I said, we hang our
hats on a defensive end. And we're a Ruscille team,
so we know we get stops, we could get rebounds,
running position, offense, take care of himself. So really hanging
our hats on a defensive, defensive end, especially for myself.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
It's going into conference and did you know you had
your a your career high and then when did you
know that you were getting close to forty?
Speaker 4 (04:25):
My teammates are saying, now you almost at thirty, You
almost at thirty. Oh you almost at forty, You almost
at forty. You know, I ain't gonna lie. That was
the first time in my life, like I.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Just blacked out.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
I didn't really know what was going on. I just
the hoop was super big for me.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
And then to get honored as the most points in
the history it's a young history, but still in the
history of this building. What does that mean?
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Oh, you know, it means a lot.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Is my first year here.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
I really admired the fans, I think them all for
coming out, the support they have told.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Me since I got here has been amazing.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
My teammates, my coaches, they are trust me, you know,
I'm glad to be here.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
And now you get a little break.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
What's the importance of a getting away and getting that
mental break, but still kind of thinking basketball because you
know what what's around the corner here.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
That's good to get a little mental resay, go home
and spend time with a loved one for the holidays
and get back to go home and see your family
and friends. So that will definitely be big for us.
But for me, I'll still be in the gym, gain
shots up, stay in sharps. When we get back, we
can finish strong going in the conference.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
That's a heck of a way to go into the holidays. Jordan.
That starts appreciate early Christmas came.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yeah, ye, Starry, all right, that's shortan pope with Roger
Walls Texas does get about a week off a little
bit more before returning back to Moody December twenty ninth,
where the host Northwestern State and then begin conference play
against Texas A and M on January fourth, seven pm
in College Station.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Before we hit this break, here is Roger Wallace with
Rodney Terry after last night's victory.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Well, let's start with the effort from Jordan Pope. Not
only does he score forty two, but he helped kind
of put this one away.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
Yeah, you know, Jordan's been coming, you know, always saving him.
You know, when you bring it new guys, you program.
We talked a little bit about it earlier. Rodgers really
imployed it. You know, guys really trying to do the
right things. Will those guys are gonna try to do
it to a fault. You know, he's been a natural
scor his entire career. We really pressed him hard to
shoot the ball at the times that he's passed up
so many open looks earlier in the season. It's good
(06:11):
to have him kind of have the night that he
had the night, but he's been coming here the last
two weeks with this corn helped us win the game
with the n CEA State made big shots and stuff
as well.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
When the guy's going like that, do you alter anything
offensively for them?
Speaker 2 (06:24):
No, we try to find him.
Speaker 5 (06:27):
We try to get him more shots. No, We're he's
been a guy really the whole season. You know, you
can see me yelling over there, and may you missed it,
You miss it, Take the next one, shoot it again.
Because he's a he's a big time shoots, one of
our better shooters on the team. He and Trey Johnson
elite shooters. And we need to shoot the.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Ball at wll force. What about that start?
Speaker 3 (06:46):
You get out to the sixteen o lead and then
all of a sudden you're having to call a time
out and a little bit of a letdown. What did
you say to your guys at that point in the
ball game.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
Well, we're still just talking about habits, man. You know,
we were trying to again have the urgency that we
want to play with as we get closer here to
the SEC play, and you've got to try to have
a killer mentality. You know, that's an opportunity for us
to really put this team away early and give them
no hope. And you know, we let off the foot
and let them foot off the gas a little bit
and let those guys make a few shots, and you know,
(07:16):
now you got to come play again, right and.
Speaker 6 (07:19):
You got thirty days of just pure basketball. These guys
don't have the other class. You've seen a lot of
guys develop and how important is it with these guys
for the next four weeks and really playing together and
developing their game. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
You I think you know, a lot of times you'll
see around the country some of the teams, you know,
will shoot their best percentage during this time because they're
guys are just in the gym and they get a
chance to work on the craft and they get a
lot of shots up, you know, and they don't have
academic obligations to deal with and be stressed with, so
you know, they're they're basically playing like a pro really,
(07:52):
to be honest, if you want to be really good,
you put the time in and you reput your soul
out of it and everything. But teams will have a
lot of opportunities to be in the gym and really
work the game.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
What's the schedule look like over the next ten days.
I know we talked to Jordan. He said he'll still
be in the gym when he gets a little bit
of a mental break as well. But how do you
kind of handle the next week and a half?
Speaker 5 (08:10):
Yeah, I mean we've had a good stretch here to
start the year. You know, guys at five days right now,
and the thing I've said to them is I want
them to go home and spend times with the loved ones.
Christmas is about being with your family, being able to
tell your loved ones you love them and how thankful
you are to have them in your life, and to
say thank you for what you've done for me, and
and just cherished his time, you know. So I want
(08:32):
them to, you know, just have a great time with
their family and understand the religious part of Christmas as well.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
But don't worry about basketball.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
We got plenty of time to come back, get ourselves
back in shape, and get up and going again.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
What was it like to see your guys congratulate Jordan
the way he did, I mean meeting him out at
half court and then after the game.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
That was pretty cool. All this team's pretty close now.
These guys have a really good chemistry off the court.
They all like each other and we haven't had to
force feed that. It's you know, happened organically over the
summer with these as all pulling for each other, look
like in each other and celebrating each other's success. So
they've been great with that all year.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Thanks Coaching.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Happy Holidays to you, Thanks Roger, Happy holidays along one
nation save holiday.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
It was a sixteen oh star for text against New Orleans.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
They got back in at sixteen eight I think was
the score, and it was a ten point game in
the second half, and then Jordan Pope happened. So congrats
to Jordan Pope. Forty two points last night in Moody
Center high in a career high for Jordan Pope as
well as Texas with the victory over New Orleans.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
We'll be back to wrap up Hour two on the
Show
