Speaker 1 (00:00):
Texas Longbarns head coach Steve Sarkejhan And this comes way
of his Thursday media availability, his final media appearance before
Texas takes on Clemson, and the latest updates on Isaiah
Bond and Kelvin Banks as they have been banged up.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Of course, Calvin Banks injured against A and M did
not play against Georgia. Isaiah Bond re injured against Georgia.
What is their status heading into tomorrow's game. Yeah, I'll
touch on Isaiah as well with that. They're both improving,
which is which is you know great for us? You know,
they're both showing great progress.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Kelvin, I think, very similar to Quinn again, decided to
come here when we weren't we weren't a back to back,
you know, college football playoff team. You know, we weren't
competing for conference championships. And he saw he saw something
that we were doing right. And you know, whether that's
the relationships between myself and coach Flood or some of
(00:55):
the other guys in his recruiting class, but but there
was something there and he chose to come here when
we were at five and seventeen. And the fact that
you know, he was not a midyear player. We had
signed seven offensive linemen in that class, six of them
were mid years.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Kelvin was the one that was not. But then he's.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Turning around, starting as a true freshman, and his second
career starts against Alabama and he's blocking two top ten
picks and Will Anderson and Dallas Turner. I just think
speaks to the volume of the type of competitor he is,
the calming demeanor that he has in some of the
most stressful moments, and not only that who he's been
(01:34):
on the field, but what he's gone through off the
field with his mother and her being sick, and and
his ability to stay kind of even keeled and focused
and still improve and play at a high level.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Just been super impressed with him.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
And the fact that the guy and back to back
days wins the Lombardi and the Outland Trophy, I think
is more than well deserving for him. And you know
what a legacy he's left here at the University of Texas.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah, the second half that question was also what was
the impact that Kelvin Banks has had on Texas during
his time here?
Speaker 1 (02:06):
And you heard sarka a lude to it.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
This past season, he was named to the Lombardi Award
the best lineman in college football, also the Outland Trophy
the best in teering lineman and all of college football.
He's going to be a first round draft pick, might
be top ten, top fifteen, top twenty, for sure. Huge
impact in the last two years, maybe three. He hadn't
really had to worry about the left side of the
(02:30):
offensive line because you knew Calvin Banks had it under control.
You mentioned Isaiah Bond, you heard start talk about it again.
Another follow up question asking about Isaiah Bond. What's his
status and also the impact Bond has on the field
when he's out there, whether or not he's injured or
one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
I think ib Obviously the speed factor is the impact
that he has on the game. You know, he's a
guy that can catch a bubble screen and take at
the distance, and you have to account for that. He's
a guy that can catch a crossing route and create
an explosive, get a reverse, creat an explosive, not to
mention all the deep shots down the field, So you
(03:07):
have to be aware of him and where he's at,
and so we're obviously much more dynamic. You know, when
he's on the field, and when he's not, you know,
to find in different ways to create some of those
to offset some of the things that we don't get
when he's there. That's the challenge from a coaching staff perspective,
right of make sure we're putting the right people in
the right spot. So optimistic that he'll be able to
(03:30):
go Saturday, but again that you know, time always tells,
especially with the injury he's got now.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Bond was a huge part of this offense first half
of the year.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
One hundred and three yards against UTSA, seventy five against ULM,
seventy four against Psissippi State. Did not have a game
under fifth the yards in the first five games of
the season. Oklahoma happens one catch five yards, has the
ankle injury, tried to play through it. Against Georgia only
a two catch to eleven yards. You could tell he
was not even close to hundred percent. Comes back, you knows,
(04:00):
gets the bye week, takes a week off.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Gainst. Florida looked pretty good, right. He had that forty four.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yard rush on that play where there was about eight
different fakes, you know, the captured Twitter and social media.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Three catch fifty five yards looked.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Pretty good Arkansas four catches forty eight yards, but at
some point I forget it was a Arkansas gamer Kentucky
or during the week reinjured himself again. In the last
three games, he's had three catches for forty nine yards.
I don't I think he had a three yard rush
against A and M. I don't don't know how many
targets he had. He's not been the same receiver since.
(04:35):
And I think it's been a huge part of why
Texas offense has struggled so far and has struggled inside
the red zone. More from Sark here, and he was
asked about this offense and specifically in the third quarter,
Texas been out scored in the third quarter by a
large amount. I want to say the number is forty
(04:56):
five to thirteen, forty nine to thirteen.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
It's a lot. And so this is from Thomas Jones,
Austin American statesman. I believe.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
But he asked Sark is this a coincidence, coincidence or
what has he seen from the third quarter in Texas
being outscored by so much?
Speaker 3 (05:09):
No, I mean, I don't, I don't know if it's coincidental.
I mean, I think at the end of the day,
we try to get in the locker room, and some
of those games, you know, i'd like to think we
had a decent lead at halftime, but but you know,
we got to get in the locker room, and we've
got to do a better job of conveying to the
players what we're going to try to do in the
third quarter, and then we got to go out and
(05:30):
execute those things. And and for for whatever reason, whether
it's us not putting together a great plan, our players
not not kind of understanding what we're trying to do,
or maybe our mental intensity isn't where it's supposed to be,
all those things have to elevate. You know, as I
touched on last week, you know, everybody in our organization
has to improve for this next four games if we're
(05:52):
fortunate to play four games for us to to get
there January twentieth, and we've all got work to do.
And that's that's one area we've identified we've got to
we've got to improve in that aspect of our game,
and that's coaches, players included. We've got to improve that
aspect of it. And again we've emphasized it, and i'd
like to think generally you get what you emphasize, so
(06:14):
hopefully we see some better results there.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Circling back to Calvin Banks obviously named the All American
Shoddy Barron also on that list. This is from Roger
Wallace asking, start, what does it say about this program
for those two guys to come into Texas, to be developed,
to be named All Americans, to have these postseason awards,
and also what it means about where the state of
the program is in general after that five win season
(06:39):
a few years ago to now back to back college
football playoff earths.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Well, I love it because they're two completely different stories. Right.
Here's here's a guy that we inherited in the program,
and John A.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Baron and who's.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Played multiple positions for US, who not only has matured
and become and developed as a great player for US,
but he's matured so much off the field, you know,
becoming a team leader and all that he does, and
a multiple position player and really kind of one of
the voices of the team, you know, and he's earned that.
And then you flip the coin over and here's Kelvin Banks,
(07:16):
a five star left tackle with all the expectations and
he does it in three years. And so two different players,
two different developments of players. But I think that speaks
volumes to the people in our organization that everybody's going
to get developed when you come here. Everybody's gonna, you know,
develop not only as a football player, but as a
person and as a student. And that's something I think
(07:39):
that I take a lot of pride in you. He
just went from talking about Michael Taff who was to
walk on, to John A. Barron, who he inherited when
we got here, has played multiple positions, to Kelvin Banks,
who was a five star, all of which I think
nobody could argue. All those guys developed not only as
players but as people. And so that's the thing as
a coach that you that you take the most pride in.
