Speaker 1 (00:00):
There is a bowl game going on right now, The
famous Idaho Potato Bowl is going on in Boise, Idaho
right now on the blue turf, the smurf turf there
Sonny there in Boise, and Fresno State is leading Northern
Illinois thirteen to three waning seconds of the first half

(00:21):
and that one is Presno State lead. Congratulations to UTSA.
The Roadrunners finished their season on an up note. It
did so in a big way as they went to
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and won the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
They won that one handily over the team at home,

(00:42):
the host school playing Coastal Carolina. They're on their home
field and they simply went right about their business and
blew them out this afternoon. So congratulations to the to
the Roadrunners, to uts who won forty four to fifteen.

(01:03):
And by virtue of the win, they finished with a
winning record. And so Jeff Trailer as a head coach
has never ever, ever had a losing season ever, going
back to his high school days when he was building
up the program at Gilmer and then at UTSA, has

(01:24):
never had a losing record and it hasn't happened yet.
Olwen McCallen for two hundred and fifty four yards. UTSA
scored twenty one second quarter, point six and third. They
were up twenty seven to nothing going in the fourth quarter,
and they won forty four to fifteen. So congrats to
the road Runners. Finished on an up notes for that one,
and that's obviously a school from the state of Texas

(01:47):
winning a bowl game, so it was good, good for
UTSA to finish that on a upnil. You know. One
of the weird things about that this was I'm not
going to necessarily say it was an unintended consequence, but
it is something I think that not too many folks
had given a great deal of thought to when the

(02:09):
construction of this twelve teen college football playoff was coming
into form. Simple water here, and what a lot of
folks really hadn't thought that much about was the fact
that for those teams who make the twelve team playoff

(02:34):
but don't get a first round by, they don't receive
a first round by. So that is obviously seeds five
through twelve at Texas five, the twelve seed Clemson, the
sixth seed, Penn State, the eleven or the succeed Penn State,
the eleven seed SMU the seven to ten matchup. In

(02:59):
the eight nine matchup as well, the seven to ten
matchup was Notre Dame, Indiana. The eight nine matchup was Tennessee,
Ohio State. In all those cases, obviously the lower seeded
teams doing the traveling to the road team, and on
all four occasions the home team won. Friday night in

(03:21):
the seven to ten matchup Notre Dame and Home beat Indiana.
Saturday in the six verses eleven matchup, Penn State beat
beat SMU and Sumu. May it just couldn't overcome the
gigantic amount of mistakes early two pick sixes and there
was another interception, and then they just they also didn't
convert a fourth down when they had an opportunity early

(03:41):
before the pick six has happened. But so they won.
And then the eight nine matchup, Ohio State just just
really whacked Tennessee pretty good on a cold night in
Columbus on Saturday night. And of course Texas went over Clemson.
And I think Roger and Wallace and I were talking
about this while we were during a break to start

(04:02):
our locker room interviews, and he said, you know, it's
kind of a bumber, really for teams like Clemson and
Indiana and well became Tennessee later. That game was never
at the time, but at Tennessee and SMU that the
season just abruptly ended. You know, these were teams that

(04:24):
had double digit wins, had great seasons, but no quote
unquote bowl game reward. Yes, you want to be in
the playoff, and they went into the playoff, but if
you lose in that first playoff game, you're done because
it's done on a campus site. Now this week, of
the eight remaining schools, they're playing in actual bowl games,

(04:46):
so they do get the bowl experience and that you know,
the players get the bowl gifts and all the other
kind of stuff and the other things that happened, so
they actually get a bowl experience, even even within the
playoff structure. And that was one of the things that
thing that folks thought really needed to happen. If you
were going to have a playoff, make sure that the
bowls get involved with it as well. And this is

(05:09):
another reason why I'm an advocate of expanding at the sixteen.
Although I love the on campus site thing. That on
campus site experience was good, but it gives more teams
an opportunity to advance than to the quarterfinals and then
have a chance to advance through the system and get

(05:30):
a bowl experience. Texas players will get a bowl experience
this week with the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, and they
now will have played in every one of what's the
new year six college balls. Now, they haven't played in
the Orange Bowl since January of sixty five, but they
have played in the Orange Bowl before and one when
they've been in the Range Bowl, obviously, in the Sugar Bowl,
the Rose Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, and now they get

(05:51):
to play in the Chick fil A Peach Bowl. All Right,
Coming up, we're gonna hear from the two head coaches
of the teams who are involved with this bowl game.
It was a mediasm just a little while ago with
Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian, and also with Kenny Dillingham,
the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils, So
we'll hear from both of those head coaches. Also coming

(06:14):
up next hour one final seasonal visit with Greg Tapper,
managing enter of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, to look
at college football in Texas, and I'm looking back at
the state championship games. It's all coming up Hour number
two on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
