Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right. Back to hearing from Longward's head coach Steve

(00:03):
Sarkis and in Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham. Sark
was asked for an injury update on Cameron Williams and
also to a review of the play of Trevor Gooseby
who had to go in for Cam Williams who was
injured late in the first half, and did say on
the post game with us, and I think he said
in the news conference as well that both in the

(00:24):
case of both both Cam Williams and also Jake Majors,
they could have gone back in had they really been
needed to go back in, but they decided to hold
him out as a precaution. So that's how that was.
So here's the follow up when asked about the condition

(00:46):
to Cam Williams and the play of Trevor Gooseby who
went into play for him.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
So Cam, again not as serious as we thought. Again,
that was more of a precautionary MRI, so we feel
comfortable about that. I thought Trevor did a really nice job.
I highlighted him this morning.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
With the team.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
You know they had, they had an elite defensive end,
first round draft pick, defensive end. I thought he held
his own more than held his own. And for a
guy to think, you know, he's been a backup all
year and against A and M you know, seven plays
in he goes and plays left tackle, and that game
plays left tackle against Georgia, and then he thinks, Okay,
I'm back as a backup. And then you know, in

(01:21):
this ball game, in the second quarter, he gets thrown
in at right tackle against a pretty good pass rusher,
couped pretty good defensive ends from Clemson. So he's been
kind of thrown to the fire here pretty good. And
I got to give him a lot of credit. He's
held his own. He's shown not only the physical fortitude,
but I think the mental fortitude, the mental toughness when
you've been you know, he's been going against some pretty

(01:42):
elite players. So I've been proud of him.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Now, remember both of these head coaches participated in this
zoom simultaneously, so it alternated back and forth. Questions for Sark,
question for Dillingham, Arizona State, the media, the media covering
Arizona State, media covering Texas. So that's why was the
bouncing back and forth on these questions. So the next
one for Dillingham dealt with balancing the transfer portal while

(02:09):
continuing to play football and going to that even though
they won the Big Twelve so they had an open
date last week and didn't have to play, you know,
in the in the first round of the college football playoffs.
So Dillingham was asked about the whole balancing act.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, it's absolute chaos.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Anybody who says it's not chaos is lying to you.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
This this, this the world we live in right now
is chaos. But you're either going to embrace it and uh,
you know, respond to what's pitched to you, or you're
not and nobody's gonna care. Nobody cares what happens to you.
They care their response to their to what happens. And
I think, uh, you know, we're over here. I mean,

(02:48):
I couldn't imagine playing a game last week with what
we were doing.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
We had it easy.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
I really couldn't imagine what coach Tarkisian had to go
through last week with the portal and opening while also
preparing for aganic football game and buff for us. It's
been a great challenge balancing it all, and I have
no clue for doing it right, you know, we'll find
out here in about six months and a year if
if we did it right. We'll find out in ten

(03:14):
days if we managed this three and a half week
break right. And regardless if it's good or bad, we'll
learn from it.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
We'll grow, we'll get better and respond.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
All right.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Sark then asked if there's something he has observed in
specific about Kenny Dillingham's career and what he's been able
to accomplish.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Yeah. No, I think from from Kenny's perspective, you know,
he's obviously a very bright football coach, and he's been
around other really good football coaches. And I've been fortunate
that same way as well in my career as I
grew up, you know, playing for Norm Chow and then
you know, starting my career at SE with him being
the coordinator, and then going to work for a North

(03:57):
Turner and still all the while being around a peak
care and then later in my career getting around coach
Save And I think I think coach Dillingham's same thing.
He's been around some really good coaches, but you can
see his you know, how innovative he's been. You know,
I've you know, whether he doesn't know it or not.
I've watched his stuff a lot too, and not only
when he was been a coordinator from an offensive perspective,

(04:19):
but really as a head coach. And you know, people
don't know this that they Washington probably should have lost
to Arizona State a year ago, and we watched that
game very closely because of playing Washington the playoff and
the way he attacked them not only on offense but
on defense on special teams. That was the head coach
that was trying to win the game. And so I
have a lot of respect for him in that approach.

(04:41):
You know, this isn't a lot of guys put on
a head coaching hat and then they go find that
head coaching manual and they say and they just kind
of cookie cutter it because that's how we're supposed to
do it. And I give him a lot of credit
and I have a lot of respect for him because he
does what he thinks is the best thing to do,
and sometimes that's not always what what the manual says
to do. And in this day and age of college football,

(05:04):
we all have to continually evolve, and I think he's
blazing a trail for some older coaches to look at
to say, hey, maybe there is a better way. We
don't have to always do it the way we've always
done it before. And I think we've all got to
think that way. This is a new era. There's a
lot of change going on and so we've all got
to think outside the box a little bit. And I
credit him for doing that. They've done a nice job,

(05:26):
all right.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
We'll hear more from Sark and also from Kenny Dillingham
coming up. We'll come back to wrap up our number
two here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
