Speaker 1 (00:00):
There was a piece that.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
I wanted to refer to from the athletic Jana Bartell,
who is one of the really good college football writers
in come and compiled I love compilations.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
I have to show you a book.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
One of the Christmas gifts that Linda gave me is
at like one of these big coffee table books, and
the book is like seeing it and beautiful golf courses
from around the world. So I know, you get oh look, yeah, yeah,
I ought to show it to you. It's all this,
(00:39):
but it's a compilation, and I like compilations of things
sometimes where you can kind of compare and read and
see how things progress and all this. Well, anyway, there's
a compilation of college football's most memorable moments in twenty
twenty four. Now I'm going to review some of this
(01:00):
with you. Can you tell me if you agree or
disagree on how they place it? Okay, most memorable moments?
Here it comes the biggest coaching news. What would you
say the biggest coaching news was it has to be
Belichick becoming the new unc EDG coach. Well no, uh,
(01:21):
it's actually Nick Saban retiring. Okay, all right, you know
what number two was?
Speaker 1 (01:30):
For them.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
It wasn't Belichick was actually number three. You know what
number two was. Number two was Charles Huff, the guy
at Marshall that left for Southern miss And it just
cratered the conference champion, the Sun Belt champion, Marshall's Bowl situation.
They had to opt out of the bowl because of that,
(01:52):
So that was kind of weird.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
There's more casual fans out there that could not tell
who Charles Huff is, but could tell you that Belichick
is the next and see it goes, and that to
me is why that would be number two.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Okay, all right, Yeah, like I said that in talking
about Saban, the departure of college football's greatest coach kick
started a butterfly effect that impacted thirty eight Power five schools,
twenty five Group of Five schools, thirty four lower level organizations,
more than a dozen high schools, and ten NFL organizations.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Okay, that reasoning makes sense. Okay, all right, best upset,
M I think maybe Northern Illinois is over Notre Dame.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Ding ding ding ding ding ding.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Yeah, there wasn't that many big upsets this season in
terms of top twenty five teams. I mean, obviously Florida
State to start the year. But yeah they won what
won two games?
Speaker 2 (02:42):
So yeah, uh yeah, they just listed as the best
way Uh did you see? And I guess then it
turned out to be the best the best game day
picker for college game Day, Miss Terry No, Timothy Shallomy,
Oh you did last weekend It's said he knew more
about college football and we thought although his way too
(03:02):
early Heisman pick of Kevin Jennings took a hits and
the Mustangs lost to Penn State. They mentioned that Shane
Gillis calling Saban Alabama Jones was.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Hilarious but shame.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
But they say Shamus the guy, the Irish guy, the
WWE guy for the first game of the year picked
Notre Dame to win the national championship.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
They're saying to keep an eye on that.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Okay, where does Vanderbilt over Alabama rank among college football's
biggest number one upsets?
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Biggest in terms ever.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
By a number one team, Because four number one teams
have lost to an unranked opponent and then went on
to win the national title LSU and O seven USC
in sixty seven Minnesota and sixty Notre Dame in forty three,
it will not be the case obviously for the Crinston
died and to make the playoff. So anyway, they said
where does it rank? They put it in there, and
they say it's right in there because it kind of
(03:59):
helped derail the Alabama season.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Interesting, yeah, and they lost three games that year.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
This year most memorable moment runner up, they say, is
the Ohio State Michigan flag plan team. Okay, yeah, but
the most memorable moment is Vanderbilt forty Alabama thirty five.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
So which would you say? Would you agree with that?
Speaker 1 (04:22):
It's up there? You know, here's the thing that's so
weird about that.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
You know, on those SEC fan sites they ragged on
Texas for barely beating Vanderbilt.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Vanderbilt beat Alabama.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
See, I think the most memorable moment was I think
Ryan Williams hit his touchdown grabbed to beat Georgia in
which he's spun around to Georgia defenders. I think that
was more memorable because that I think that's the play
of the year. Okay, I'm not sure if Vanderbilt at Alabama.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
I just don't think it's that memorable. Okay. It's funny
because they list is the.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Some of the storylines that they're talking looking about the
Birmingham Bowl, which has no sponsors. We know is Georgia
Tech and Vanderbilt, and they had some of those great moments.
They're saying that might be the best bowl game or
one of my best bowl games.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
Tomorrow two thirty.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Yeah, Las Vegas Bowl they think will be really compelling
USC against A and M tomorrow night. The Trojans are
returning to where they began their season. Remember they beat
LSU in Las Vegas. That was on Labor Day night,
I think Saturday. Boston College and Nebraska playing in the
Pinstripe Bowls Huskers reaching bowl eligibility for the first time
(05:36):
since twenty sixteen to snap the longest postseason drop among
Power four teams.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
I did not realize that Pop Tart's Bowl.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
We talked about the Povey since it's everyone's favorite bowl.
But it's got a pretty cool thing to what it's
It's Miami and Ohio and Iowa State. And then and
Linda pointed this out to me. They have a fully
functioning toaster on the trophy, the trophy that goes to
the winning team has a fully functional toaster.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Remember last year they ate the mask out. Are they
gonna do it again this year?
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Well, I think though they didn't say that, and maybe
that might have drawn some blowback on that deal, even
though it was an actual pop dart and not the
goofy guy in the pop dart thing that disappeared, But
it looked kind of creepy.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
It looked a little weird.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Alibi Bowl could be interesting b Yu and Colorado. It's
very interesting that it's two Big twelve teams playing each other,
but because Colorado is viewed as a quote unquote Pac
twelve legacy school and the two didn't play each.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Other during the year, so that makes it okay.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Apparently the porcupine at the San Antonio Zoo picked Colorado.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Wow, yeah, so wow, it's an unfortunately for the Cougars.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
The zoo animals have a pretty good track record of
picking the bowl game winner every year. So anyway, Uh so,
there's there's a couple of other couple other interesting elements
that that are going into the bowl games for the Okay,
is there a specific bowl game that you have some
interest in that is not obviously in the playoffs a
(07:25):
CFP playoff game, it's not part of the New Year
six or any of that.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
It's just a bowl game itself.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Is there a specific bowl game that you have interested in, Say, hey,
I think I'd really like to watch that.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
I think, just in terms of watchability, I think Vanderbilt
Georgia Tech will be a lot of fun. Love Haynes
King loved Diego Pavia. There'll it'll, it should be a
great game. And then I'm interested also in Colorado BYU
just because of Colorado and Travis Hunter and Dion and
all that, and you know.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
They're They're a fun show to watch.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
You know, there's one of the most exciting college football
teams that's not in the playoffs. So I look forward
to watching that in Their guys aren't sitting out and
Taki is a fantastic head coach. On the BYU side,
they're going to be ready to play.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
I'm going to give you two other ones. I agree
with you on your choices there, I'm going to give
you two other ones. One don't snicker when I say
the name of the bowl until you hear a little
more about The matchup is the Go Bowling Military Bowl.
It's East Carolina and North Carolina State. And when they
(08:33):
played before in the Peach Bowl, game. This is about
ninety two or ninety three, and East Carolina was down
seventeen points and they came back and won, and then
they just kind of almost rioted on the field. All
this stuff and those who don't like each as you know,
they're about an hour and a half apart from Raleigh
to Greenville, and there's been some bad blood when they've played.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
So now they're going to play in a bowl game.
So there's that.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
And then hey, I gotta admit I'm kind of interested
in the Relyquest Bowl.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Let's see Alabama and Michigan.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
Let's see how Alabama responds to not being included in
the playoff. And Michigan, which kind of feels energized and
recharged after beating Ohio State, how they look on that.
You know, Alabama and these were Nick Saban. Alabama coached
(09:27):
teams had come in for some criticism if they didn't
make the BCS National Championship Game or the playoff. It
been often said they kind of mailed in their bowl
performance and that included a major bowl. Now in the
case of Florida State last year in the Orange Bowl,
Florida State had a lot of guys opt out and
injuries and they were disappointed about being in the playoff.
(09:50):
I'm not excusing it. I'm just saying it was probably
a little more understandable. Remember when Alabama played Utah in
the Sugar Bowl and got throttled because they didn't really care.
And some folks try to make that claim about Georgia
against Texas when they played, and Kirby Smart shut that
down real quick. He said, no, no, our guys cared. Yeah,
(10:12):
there were there were a few guys that didn't play,
but it wasn't like a whole raft or rosters like
two dbs and a running back that didn't play. But
he said, we had enough to win and should have
won the game, and they didn't, got down twenty one
nothing and Texas ends up winning at twenty eight twenty
one when they're up twenty eight to seven and the
fourth quarter. But sometimes high profile college football teams can be,
(10:36):
and sometimes rightly so, accused of not caring, even if
it's a big bowl game, a New Year's six Bowl,
which I just find absolutely preposterous and ridiculous.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
So we'll see. I know this if.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Alabama doesn't do well and they get dog walked by
Michigan in that bowl game. Everybody who's gonna do right now,
right now is saying SMU should not have been in
the playoff.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Alabama deserved to be in the playoff.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
If Alabama doesn't win that bowl game, there's gonna be
people say no, no, no, they didn't deserve to be in Look,
they lost to somebody else.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
They should have shouldn't have lost it.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
So that's gonna come up in addition to the losses
to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma. But that way, Hey, whether whether
the Vanderbilt win over Alabama was the biggest moment of
the year or the biggest upset of the year, or
whatever you want to say, I would think the Alabama
loss in Norman, Oklahoma was so much on the line
and then in the driver's seat to be in the playoff.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
That to me might be the most stunning development of
the season.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
To go in the Norman like that and play that
poorly and get beat soundly by Oklahoma. A team that
was headed for a losing record. Now they're headed for
Fort Worth in the Armed Forces Bowl because they won
that game. So something to keep in mind. All right,
We've got more coming up. Steve with us here on
