Speaker 1 (00:02):
It's The Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster there Craig Way.
Just getting started here on this Thursday edition of The
Craig Way Show, technically the first Craigway Show the twenty
twenty five calendar year. It began with a bang yesterday,

(00:25):
Texas defeating Arizona State thirty nine to thirty one in
double overtime. Of course, if you heard the beginning of
our show, you heard the highlight montage with Greig Way
and Roger Wallace and Craig now in Norman, Oklahoma prevaring
for Texas against Oklahoma. The women's basketball side of things.
We will not have a show tomorrow because I'll be
traveling the college station. Creig will be traveling back from Norman.

(00:48):
So they if you need your Texas football and basketball fix,
check out the morning kickoff from seven to nine AM.
Mike Harge and Mark Henry. They'll have all the action
for you tomorrow, and then I believe me and Craig
will be back together in studio next Monday. Craig is
the first time we'll have a show together in studio
in what almost almost two weeks.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, in the new year, right, we have a Yeah,
I guess we had right before Christmas and the twenty
third I think was the last time we probably had
one there. Well, no, we were Did we do something
right after Christmas? We did seven, So it's been a week. Yeah,
we did do that. But it'll be good to get
the new year off to off to good starting. And

(01:31):
this is that real crazy compressed time of year where
you have a lot of games overlapping football, men's basketball,
women's basketball, bowl games going on, the NFL playoffs, and
the cusp of starting up. So yeah, it's a it's
a real busy time here over these really for the
prior week and really about for the next ten days

(01:51):
to two weeks.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
How about the performance from the cam Skataboo last night, Craig,
I mean he was as advertised, one hundred and forty
three rushing yards to touchdowns, hit a forty two yard
passing touchdown, he had that huge catchdown the sideline over
Michael tab for sixty two yards on the sideline throwing up.
I mean, you got to give credit where credit is due.
He played his butt off yesterday.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
I told you that dude can play man and I
thought he should have been the Big Twelve Offensive Player
of the Year and not should her Sanders because he
did more for his team. Sanders had a really good season,
but the guy who did the most for that team,
obviously as Travis Hunter, won the Heisman Trophy, and I
have no argument with that. But I thought the Skataboo
should have been the offensive player of the Year in

(02:35):
the Big Twelve. And I think he proved that yesterday.
It was just amazing what he did. And having said
all of that game, think about it. The long runs
twice just stood up like a stone wall and stopped
him on fourth down twice. They did it to Skataboo,
So credit to them about that, but also credit Arizona

(02:56):
State for being opportunistic. After the long runch Stopskataboo on
the second time down inside the five yard line, that's
when Texas had a man to do a turnover. Wasn't
officially a turnover, but when the ball popped out of
Quintravian Weisner's hands and it popped right back to Quinn Viewers,
he gets tackled for a safety. And then even though
the free kick from Stone was a good from Wilson

(03:19):
was a good kick, and I think they started like
on their thirty one yard line. The Lorrns didn't stop them.
They came down, they scored, you know, and it was
it got real interesting for a while, obviously, So it
was credit to both teams. Arizona State from playing really well.
Texas now has beaten back to back power for conference

(03:40):
opponents in the playoffs and for people talking about the
schedule and stuff like this, that they've beaten the ACC
champion and they've beaten the Big Twelve champion. The only
losses have come to another conference champion, the SEC champion.
But now they'll get a shot against an Ohio State
team that was incredibly impressive in the Rose Bowl win
yesterday being over Oregon.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, before I get your thoughts in Ohio State, I
thought Texas defense did a great job of stopping Kim Skataboo.
But the differential in plays run from Arizona State the
Texas in time of posssion had a huge impact on
that game, and we saw it in the second half
with the fatigue of the Texas defensive players. I mean,
by the end of the game, Craig Arizona State ran
almost forty more plays than Texas did in that contest,

(04:25):
and I think we could kind of see that by
the fourth quarter.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Yeah, I think it took its toll for sure. And
it's kind of a weird deal. You know, you won't
you'll take the quick scores like they had to plays
forty one seconds on that seventy seven yard opening drive.
Then the punt returned for the touchdown. But it did
start start to skew things back the other way. That's
why that old argument about running shoot offense is it

(04:48):
takes a toll on your defense. Well, anytime you can
go ahead and put the points on the board, you'll
take the points. But the long Wrens had to rely
on that defense so much and they finally did start
to wear down. Even then it took the trick play
to get them back to within a touchdown striking distance.
Then they came back down and got the big touchdown
and the two point conversion of tie it, and then
it was left to the dramatics of the moment for

(05:10):
Texas to respond on fourth in thirteen and after that
touchdown they have the quick hit to Gunner Helm to
start the second overtime and the two pointer to Matthew
Golden then and Andrew mccooba coming up with this fifth
interception of the season. Huge stuff.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
And now they'll face Ohio State next Friday at the
Cotton Bowl. Ohio State went up early over Oregon from
the jump, led thirty four to nothing at one point.
Familiar quarterback Will Howard, who said yesterday that the one
team he didn't beat at Kansas State was Texas, so
he was looking forward to this game. But the one
thing that he has that he did not have at
Kansas State is a lot of weapons on defense and

(05:46):
on offense, especially Jeremiah Smith, the freshman wide out.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yeah, they're going to the long wards are going to
be buttoned up in the secondary when it comes to
defending Smith, and you know automatically what comes to minus
Jatte Baron, who is the defensive MVP yesterday of the
Peach Bowl, and the fact that he would he might
draw a lot of the primary sign but I don't
think it'll be all of that. I think that Sark

(06:11):
and the coaching staff overall have no problem putting Manny
Muhammad on him or however they mix the coverages and
get safety help over the top against a guy like Smith.
They've got really good running backs. Trabian Henderson is going
to be a load. We know that. So it's these

(06:31):
are two really good defenses that I think are going
to be tested by two good offenses.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
Okay, now, let's get your thoughts on on Texas basketball,
both men's and women's of course, starting tonight eight o'clock
tip off seven and forty five pre game between Texas
and Oklahoma on one O three to one f M
Austin's eighty station.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Craig, you'll be on the call with Kathy Harston.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
It's an Oklahoma program that has given Fix Schaeffer a
lot of fits. Johnny browncheck in the read to react
type offense from Oklahoma. Did not lose the Texas at
all last and then we thought we're going to see
a Texas OU matchup in the Big twelve Championship.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
We did not.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Iowa State was able to upset Oklahoma. But this is
a really big game to night, the start off conference
play for the Long Horns.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah, you mentioned Jenny Barronchick. What she's done. She's now
in her fourth season after Sherry Cole had had all
those great seasons as the head coach and Bronchick took
a couple of years to start to building it up,
but now she has a really good team. Uh there's
a lot of the same returning regulars in Neveah Tot
who is the tiny top point guard at all of
five to three, kind of runs the offense there, say,

(07:33):
Harrol Williams gives the double digit scoring. Peyton Verhols is
a three point shooting weapon as well. Then you have
veterans like skylard Van who seemingly has been there forever
and then and then, and at Lexi Keys, you can
come off the bench. He hit that gigantic three pointer
to help Oklahoma get one of its two wins over
Texas last year. And then the big addition is Reagan Beers,

(07:54):
the six four junior transfer center from Oregon State. She
averages a double double, she averages seventeen points, ten rebounds.
That's where the challenge is going to come inside for Texas,
for Taylor Jones and Kyla Oldacre and even a Leah
Moore coming back to our hometown area. They've got to
stay out of foul difficulty, which has plagued them of late.
Even as they've won games handily, They're going to have

(08:14):
to have available bodies to defend Reagan Beers tonight, and.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Then on the men's side on Saturday, they played Texas
A and M A six thirty airtime on ninety eight
point one fmkavet in thirteen hundred the Zone seven o'clock
tip off time thirteenth ranked A and M. Craig, a
team that is number one in the country and offensive
rebound and just like Texas and Oklahoma, the Knight a real,
real tough start. The SEC played for Rodney Terry and
the Horns.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
It's a team whose best player is a guard. Way Taylor,
the fourth is really good. He averages sixteen points per game.
But you you pointed it out. In addition to him
and Zurich Phelps the point guard transfer from SMU, who
averages thirteen points and four rebounds. Those are the two
real kind of stars, if you will. But this team rebounds.
They're out rebounding their opponents by almost twelve boards per game.

(09:03):
Compare that to the Long Runes are out rebounding their
opponents by half of that six points per game. And
in Henry Coleman, who is a grad student he averages
five boards. Anderson Garcia off the bench is a swingman
who averages six rebounds. And then in addition to that,
I mentioned Solomon Washington, a big guy who averages six

(09:26):
rebounds as well. So they crash the boards and Buzz
Williams always has that team fired up. And hey, it's
Texas against Texas A and M. The most recent edition
of that Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown rivalry series. We
know how that went over in college station on Thanksgiving weekend.
So Aggie fans will be all fired up for this

(09:47):
one first ever SEC Conference game tonight for the Longhorns
and for Oklahoma by the way on the women's side.
And then on Saturday, first ever SEC Conference game for
Texas as they take on Texas A.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
And M first time back in the Rito Arena. Sants win.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Twenty twelve the last time, and Texas won that last
meeting there. Long runs lead the overall series significantly, it's
like one thirty eight to eighty six. But the Aggies
had their moments there in Red Arena. I'll never forget,
you know, ac Law hitting a three right at the
buzzer and the fans storm in the court and they
climbed right over Eddie Orn and I Eddie, I think

(10:26):
came up swinging, you know, that sort of thing fans
for charging the floor. That was one time that happened
when Kevin Durant was playing. And then they had a
great game back at the Irlin Center when Durant took
com in and double overtime and he hit that gigantic
three and I said, there's your national player of the year.
And he turned out to be that. And ac Law
had a great year. But they've they've had some big

(10:47):
battles at Reid as well. So it's gonna be a
lot of fun. First time for Texas to be there
in thirteen years.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Looking forward to him, look forward to see you on
Saturday with Eddie.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
First time in college station for me at a Texas
A and m athletic event.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
So I'm excited to see that.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
And of course i'll talk to you to night on
the broadcast of Texas and Oklahoma.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
We'll look forward to appreciated Cam and thanks for holding
things down. I'll be back in the house on Monday.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Yes, sir, save travels back. We'll talk to you soon. Thanks, Craig.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
You back all right, Texas Oklahoma Tonight will tip off
seven forty five pregame actually at one o three to
one on one on three to one FM, Austin's eighty
station eight o'clock tip off, Correig Away and Kathy Harston
on the call. Texas and Oklahoma number five first number
nine and then Saturday Texas and Texas A and M
their first SEC Conference game of the season as well,

(11:38):
both men's and women's beginning SEC play this weekend. It's
going to be a very tough task for both teams
as they get things going. We are just getting started
to hear on this Thursday edition of The Craigway Show.
Up next Inconceivable and because we will not have a
show Friday, we will travel to the more flasks at
the lower forty eight states and get you some Florida

(11:59):
man in Florida woman's stories. That's up next year as
Creigway Show continues after this
