Speaker 5 (06:24):
One, never a doubt, right, Holy cow, Good afternoon year.
On this Thursday edition of The creg Way Show, Texas
defeating Arizona State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at
the Peach Bowl thirty nine to thirty one in double overtime,
a game that began very quickly for the Longhorns on

(06:46):
the good side, felt like they were going to run
away with it. Arizona State came fighting back in the
spite of twenty four to eight lead for Texas. The
Sun Devils would end up tying the game, and two
missfield goals later in regulation, the game would go the overtime.
Arizona State would end up leading in overtime, and then
Texas back to back throws from Quinn Eewers would put

(07:06):
the Longhorns in front, and then Andrew Mcooba, the hometown
Austin native, with the game ceiling interception, and now the
Longhorns are back in the College Football Playoffs semi finals
for the second consecutive year. Well, they'll face a familiar quarterback,
Will Howard in Ohio State next Friday in Arlington, Texas

(07:29):
at AT and T Stadium. It's the Cotton Bowl with
a six to three pm kickoff. Good after dude, Cameron
Parker filling in for Craigway and Craig out today because
well he's traveling to Norman, Oklahoma as Texas will take
on the Oklahoma Sooners and women's basketball tonight. But Craig

(07:49):
fortunate enough to be able to spend some time with
us this afternoon right now here on The Craigway Show.
And Craig, You've had some fantastic fourth down calls during
your Texas football career. I mean even the last two
seasons there. It feels like every other game there's a
fourth down goal line stand from this defense, whether it's
Kansas State last year, A and M this year, Clemson,

(08:12):
Arizona State this year, and of course there's a fourth
and five Vince Young against USC the National Championship, his
game winning touchdown. Now, the fourth down conversion in overtime,
it's probably not the same as fourth and five, Craig,
but it's definitely up there.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yeah, you know what it, Pam is It reminded me
of a play that happened twenty years ago. It was
fourth down and seventeen. I believe it was fourth and
or fourth and eight eighteen, and Texas was on the
ropes at Kansas and Vin Young picked it up on

(08:50):
what seemingly looked like three strides. He just kind of
glided in for twenty three yards and then two plays
later was able to throw a game winning touchdown pass
to Tony Jeffrey. And the impact of that game was
and I'd mentioned this is that if he doesn't convert

(09:10):
that because Texas was down to Kansas twenty three to
thirteen with like just under four minutes to go. If
he doesn't convert that that fourth and eighteen play, Texas
doesn't win that game at Kansas, they don't go to
the Rose Bowl to play Michigan, and I don't think
it sets the stage for the great run next year
to win the national championship. Put it this way, they

(09:31):
would have had to do a lot more, would have
been a lot harder path to get to that Rose
Bowl than when they started at number two next year.
Because the way they finished two thousand and four season,
with that thrilling win over Michigan or Rose Bowl, they
never would have been in the Rose Bowl.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
They would have gone to the Alamo Bowls.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
And even when they won that, and then when their
last game, you had Aaron Rodgers playing for Cal at
the time, grumbling and grankings saying they deserve to go
Cal instead of Texas.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
They didn't get the bid.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Cal, by the way, went promptly down the coast to
play two tacking the Holiday Bowl, and Tech beat them
I think seventeen points a Tech team that lost at
home by thirty to Texas. So all of that stuff
was put in motion by the fourth and eighteen run
by Vin Young, and I think you know, obviously the
long Ones were down to their last down there on

(10:19):
fourth down and thirteen, and if Quinn Viewers doesn't make
the pass for the touchdown, they don't win the game
yesterday and their season is over.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
But he was so cool and so calm under it.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
They said in the postgame press conferences that they worked
that play in practice against the Blitz with zero coverage
where they was just man coverage and there was Matthew
Golden able to get to the end.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
Zime.

Speaker 5 (10:42):
Yeah, we have some postgame sound from Sark and quin
Ewers that will play later on in the show. And
to your point, Craig, they said, yeah, we practiced that
same play against that same defensive look, and we got
it against Arizona State and Texas executed it perfectly, real quick, Craig,
before we hit this break, hopefully you can say with
for one more segment, the grit and determination from Quinn youwers.

(11:05):
I mean, it reminds me of a lot of other
past Texas quarterbacks like Sam Ellinger, like Colt McCoy, like
Finn Shong that just no matter what they seem to
always show up in the big moments.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
I totally agree with all of that. He's a gritty,
tough guy. And I'll give you one more name as well.
And there's a reason why I say this name. The
other name that I would toss in there would be
Chris Simms, because Chris Sims went through a lot, He
went through some adversity, and Chris Sims, to this day,
I think remains the most unappreciated quarterback in Texas history.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
But Quinn Ewers is quickly climbing the ladder.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
There was a great piece written in The Athletic Today
by Sam cohn or after the game last night about
how Texas fans so many, not all of them, but
there are a lot of Texas fans ready to move on,
let's move on to Arch and they're not appreciating Quinn
not only for the moment what he's doing, but for
what this team is doing getting back to the Final four.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
And I think Sam made a good point.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
And you know, when Mike scrambled to get to the
airport yesterday after we got off the air of make
a flight to get the Dallasport Worth to connect to
get up here to Oklahoma, City to get the Norman
to call this huge women's game to night between number
five Texas and number nine Ou opening up SEC play.
But as I was scrambling through, I read a lot
of other things on social media, and there was just

(12:24):
a lot of people that just were more happy grumbling
about the things that didn't work than the things that
did work and in a memorable double overtime game, a
win for Texas, which by the way makes them the
first team in college football Playoff history to win all
six New Year's Six bowl games.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
The only one they had won was the Peach Bowl.
Now they've done that.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
So I think there's an unappreciation not only for Quinn,
but really for this long wrun team overall, and hopefully
folks will appreciate it a little more as they move
into the Final Four for the second straight year.

Speaker 5 (12:56):
Say with us for one more segment, Craig got to
hit a break We'll continue the breakdown on this game
and also talk about Texas basketball against Oklahoma tonight, a
huge SEC opener and then a big win for the men.
On Saturday, they take on A and M down in
College Station seven pm tip off time. We'll be back
here on the Craig Wave Show just getting started recapping
Texas's victory over Arizona State

Speaker 2 (13:18):
In the College Football Playoff quarterfinal
