At the end of one long Words will in battle
the baseline Harmon to trigger the past. Rory looking sends
across the floor. Holly measures up a three, missed it
off the rim Connor roade rebound, drives in and scores
off the glat to Booker, dine on the shot lite

What a weekend for Texas basketball, What a weekend for
basketball in general. Welcome to Monday's edition of The Craigway Show.
I'm Cameron Parker filling in for Craig Way on this
Monday afternoon. Craig recovering under the weather as a lot
of people are right now. The flu is kind of
taking out a lot of people in the University of
(05:31):
Texas campus right now. Allergies seed all that good stuff.
So Craig not filling up the part of the day,
getting a well deserved rest day. Hopefully we'll have him
back in tomorrow or Wednesday, But a lot to unpack.
On today's show, mentioned the big blowout victory for Texas
basketball in eighty nine to fifty eighth victory in Baton
(05:53):
Rouge at the Pete Mayrevich Assembly Center, and then Texas
women's basketball getting a victory in Call College Station for
the first time as conference or rather as the first
time as SEC Conference opponents seventy to fifty has Fix
Schaeffer squad has now won six straight games and now
up to number four in the AP Top twenty five rankings.
(06:17):
We'll hear from Rodney Terry Fix, Schaeffer, Devon Pryor, Kiton Sderick,
and Roy Harmon throughout today's show. A lot of sound
to get to. As always, would love for you to
join us on our program. We had the text line available.
Texta word Texas eight one to five three zero followed
by your message. Of course, we are also live as always,
streaming on the free iHeartRadio app and on YouTube, Facebook
(06:41):
and Twitter, so make sure you subscribe, leave some comments.
Want to get you in on the show. Want to
hear your thoughts on Texas basketball this weekend, but also
the NBA trades. I mean, wow, Luka Doncics from Dallas
Mavericks one of the best players in the world. I
would argue number two, number three I think will go
(07:03):
down as one of the all time greats. Has led
the Mavericks to an NBA Finals to two Western Conference
Finals appearances. He's twenty six years old and now he's
a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. In a er
shattering trade on Saturday night, I'd actually had passed out.
We had a arrived back from Baton Rouge about I
(07:24):
don't know, about nine ten PM. Went home, went to bed,
and I woke up in the morning and I had texts,
I had missed calls from people who I do not
talk to that much, asking what in the world is
going on? And I think Dallas Maverick fans and even
some NBA fans and even some front office teams players
(07:46):
trying to figure out what in the world happened. But
Luka Doncics the Dallas Mavericks now in the Los Angeles Lakers.
Anthony Davis is a member of the Dallas Mavericks. And
then last night, or actually it may have been earlier
this morning, it was last night dearon Fox from the
San Antonio Spurs from the Sacramento Kings, now with the
San Antonio Spurs. As the former Texan by the way,
(08:10):
who played his college basketball at Kentucky, drafted by the Kings,
has been traded to the San Antonio Spurs, and now
we'll link up with Victor Webin Yama Zach Lavigne from
Chicago Bulls now headed to Sacramento. But the Spurs big winners,
as we had heard last week that they were going
(08:31):
to try and land Dearon Fox. Dearon Fox had told
the Kings organization that he did not want to re
sign with Sacramento. The Spurs were the favorites, of course,
a lot of other teams involved, but able to go
ahead and pull out the trade for the point guard
known as SWIPA. It's a fantastic move, I think for
the San Antonio Spurs. Did not give up that much
(08:56):
in this trade, and now you get to go ahead
and give web and Yama very fast and good scoring
point guard. And the big key also is the Spurs
don't really give up any of their their young asset
in this move. The kep Stefan Castle, the rookie from Yukon,
kept Jeremy Sohan, kept Kelvin Johnson, and kept Dylan Fasell
(09:16):
and obviously holding on to Chris paul In Harrison Barnes.
So it's a move that won't make the Spurs NBA
final contenders this season, but going forward in the future
they can lock Fox down to a long term contract.
I think, well, we're gonna we're gonna visit with Carl
shoning up next to actually get his thoughts on all
(09:37):
the NBA moves as well. Eric Henry from Horns two
four to seven will stop by the four o'clock hour,
get his thoughts on a spring workouts for the Texas Longhorns.
Arch Manning on the forty Acres doing a lot of
press tours lately announced his Red Bull nil deal. I
think worth what or now he's worth up the six
million dollars, I think in terms of nil money, and
obviously we'll accumulate a lot more than that. Get his
(10:00):
thoughts on that Texas basketball as well, and then maybe
some Super Bowl quick previews. It is Super Bowl Week
and maybe the lucadantistreet is kind of taken away from
that just a little bit, but it's going to gear
up for Sunday's game as the Kansas City Chiefs trying
to win three straight in a row and take out
(10:20):
the Philadelphia Eagles. All that to get to here on
today's show, of course, Inconceivable, we're just getting started on
this Monday afternoon. You're on thirteen hundred the Zone.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
We're just getting rolling here on this Monday afternoon in Austin, Texas.
A beautiful day outside currently in the seventies. I believe
it's actually a record high for Austin on this date,
eighty degrees right now. But hey, sun is out, gorgeous date.
Hope you are enjoying your Monday. Cameron Parker filling in
for Craig Way here on today's show, and as promised,
(11:03):
going to welcome in Carl showing the Austin Spurs broadcaster.
Who's gonna help us try try and make sense of
the the Luka Doncis trade. I know, of course your
affiliation with the Spurs, Carl, but we have to talk
about this Luca trade. And when a lot of trades
like this happen, I think a lot of blame is
probably cast on the player or the organization or the
(11:26):
GM Rather, I have to think this has to go
all the way up top to the owner's Carl, you know,
before we.
Speaker 6 (11:35):
Start a signing blame. Maybe we talked about the owners.
Speaker 7 (11:37):
I'm just gonna put it out there that if iHeartMedia
were to give me a three hundred and fifty million
dollar contract, I would gain fifteen pounds by the time
the ink dried, right, Like, you lose a little bit
of motivation when you have that kind of money. I
get the feeling, and you know, if we're trying to
maybe figure it out, it seems to me that behind
(11:58):
closed doors, the Mavericks weren't necessarily interested in paying somebody
seventy million a year who quite frankly, showed up to
the most seasons of his career a little.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
Bit out of shape.
Speaker 7 (12:11):
He's had a couple good in shape seasons, but according
to reports, he came in this season at two sixty
and he's playing weight ideally is around two forty.
Speaker 6 (12:21):
You already know that Luka Doncic can be a.
Speaker 7 (12:23):
Little bit of a defensive liability at times, despite averaging
two steals a game, And you know, I think, quite frankly,
that's where you wonder, with this new CBA being these
explosive numbers and one player taking up so much of
the salary cap, is that really where this conversation started,
Do we trust Luka to be healthy when he's getting
(12:46):
paid seventy plus.
Speaker 6 (12:47):
Million a year, whatever that number might have looked at.
Speaker 8 (12:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
The argument for Niko Harrison is that you mentioned out
of shape part, the not be able to stay healthy,
which likely has to do with his weight and what
he comes in at. Not been healthy at all this season,
probably will not be able to play for the Lakers
still after the All Star break, if if I were
to guess. But on the other side, Carl even while
(13:11):
he has not been in great shape and while he's
not been healthy, he's still taking Dallas to the NBA Finals.
And I feel like, no matter what, no matter who
has Luka Doncs on your team, you're a contender, I
would say, for the conference finals, and all it takes
is an injury or you know, like last season, you
get a good matchup against the te Wolves and you
find yourself in the NBA Finals. Now, of course the
(13:33):
Celtics right away with that series, but also Celtics had
maybe one of the best offenses in NBA history, So
I understand the concerns with this weight. And you know,
maybe Luca turns in the droll and beiid where you're
looking at it in six years and he still hasn't
done anything. But at the same time, I feel like
you're trading away a player who gives you a chance
to win. And I don't know if Anthony Davis will
(13:54):
solve that.
Speaker 7 (13:56):
You're spot on in a lot of areas. You know,
starting off with, he is probably going to always be
very rarely not the best player in a playoff series,
and if you have the best player in a playoff series,
you have a good chance to win that series. Obviously,
there's gonna be times where you run into just a
better team.
Speaker 6 (14:15):
But going back to when Luca.
Speaker 7 (14:18):
Knocked off Phoenix in the playoffs a couple of years ago,
that was a big upset, but it really wasn't too
shocking to me because Luca was the best player on
either team and he's somebody who can obviously stuff the
box score. But you know, really, I do think that
there must have been some kind of behind the scenes
things that we can't see that led.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
To these conversations starting.
Speaker 7 (14:43):
And then, you know, as big of a deal as
everybody wants to make of it being maybe a bad trade,
I do think that if you're going to move Luka
Doncic getting somebody who is an All NBA player, defensive
anchors and you know, one of the best defenders in
the LEA League and Anthony Davis.
Speaker 6 (15:01):
It's a good move.
Speaker 7 (15:02):
They kind of have a couple of players like that,
but Derek Lively's out for a few months, you know,
and really I think they looked at this team that
they see Luca has not played since Christmas, and they've
gotten a chance to, you know, really sit back and
evaluate what would we want if we wanted to move
on from Luca and not give him the probably would
(15:23):
be record breaking supermacs that he was going to come
into this summer.
Speaker 6 (15:28):
So it was decision time, and they.
Speaker 7 (15:31):
Decided to maybe get out of the Luka Dotca business.
And it's the first real sign of Mark Cuban not
owning the Mavericks.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
It's a huge point because I do not think Mark
Cuban would have made this decision, and I can't imagine
he must be inconsolable right now seeing his boy Luca
moved to Los Angeles. Okay, impact for this season obviously
going forward, the Lakers, somehow, who ended up trading for Will,
traded for Kareem Abdul Jabbar got Paul Gasol for nothing
(16:01):
in a similar type deal, get Anthony Davis in a
huge trade, done it again. Now they get Luca Dontas.
So the Lakers are going to be relevant again for
the next ten years.
Speaker 7 (16:09):
Now.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
For this season, though, you know, they still probably have
one move. They needed a big man, obviously with Ad
gone the Dallas and now Dallas, who I thought had
had a great roster around Luca still have a decent
roster with Kyrie and Ad and Klay Thompson. Of course,
you mentioned the injuries obviously to the lively. I love Gafford,
(16:31):
but how does this impact the Western Conference? You think
for this season?
Speaker 6 (16:36):
It makes things certainly more interesting.
Speaker 7 (16:40):
You obviously have a renewed interest in the Lakers, who
had an up and down season. They had a good start,
they had a rough middle, and recently they've been playing
well enough to have them in the five seed in
the Western Conference.
Speaker 6 (16:51):
But I think.
Speaker 7 (16:52):
Everybody now wants to see how does Luca respond to
playing with Lebron Who's going to be the big dog there.
And you know, almost to my point going back to
you know, Luka Doncic being in shape, if you were
going to send him somewhere.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
You probably sent him.
Speaker 7 (17:09):
To the wrong place because Lebron James is going to
get him in shape.
Speaker 6 (17:13):
La is beautiful.
Speaker 7 (17:14):
You want to look good on the beach, you know,
but really you send him to somebody who can be
his mentor in perhaps his biggest weakness, which is being
a you know, professional athlete, athletic body and taking care
of what goes into your body. Obviously, one of the
things that's going a little viral is resurfacing of Michael
Finley taking the champion Western Conference championship beer away from
(17:37):
Luka Doncic when they won the West. You know, he
was going to enjoy a little beer, and you know,
I think that that's you know, goes back to conversations
we have. Michael Finley might not be able to tell
Luca he can't have a beer after a game, but
Lebron James certainly can.
Speaker 6 (17:51):
And I think that's something that you.
Speaker 7 (17:54):
Know, he would take a little bit more seriously because
it's obviously both a peer and a mentor figure.
Speaker 6 (18:00):
So you know, you really want to see how that happens.
Speaker 7 (18:02):
We still have the rest of this week for the
trade deadline, so I think both teams are going to
look to try and improve their rosters.
Speaker 6 (18:09):
But the West is always a shuffle.
Speaker 7 (18:12):
Once you get past the four seed Denver, you wouldn't
be surprised to see the Lakers maybe go into a
little bit of a spiral while they.
Speaker 6 (18:19):
Figured things out.
Speaker 7 (18:21):
Maybe you see a little bit of boost from the
Mavericks being able to just immediately put in Anthony Davis,
because that was the other thing. Luca might not play.
I think you speculate until after the All Star break.
It may be part of the conditioning issue is that
he's not recovering well either. That's something that we don't
really know behind the scenes. So whenever Luca comes back,
he'll come back. But the Mavericks, I think they get
(18:42):
a healthy All Star caliber player that will be ready
to make an immediate contribution and improve them defensively. So
I could see the Mavericks maybe starting to build up,
But yesterday they just looked like they were sleepwalking out there.
They were dis draught. They were just as shock because everybody,
obviously the human elmet goes in it. But I do
think the Mavericks are professionals and they'll be able to
(19:04):
get it together and eventually, once Ad gets down there
and they figure a few things out, they could be
just as good as anybody in the Western Conference. And
when you look at Nicole Jokics being the guy you
have to go through in the Western Conference, I think
Anthony Davis maybe does slightly help more than Luka Doncic
in that situation because you get that matchup one on one.
(19:26):
Jokic still wins the matchup, but it's not as big
of a landslide, you know as maybe just having a
defensive list player like Luca out there.
Speaker 4 (19:36):
Yeah, obviously Jason Kidd has some sort of relationship with Ad.
He was on the Lakers staff when they won that
Bubble NBA Championship. Agree right right with you that I
think the Mavericks can plug Ady in and that lose
too much and the Lakers, we'll see. I don't think
it's a win now season for them obviously with gaining Luca.
But but to your point, the one team you don't
want to send them to is Los Angeles because, hey,
(19:58):
Lebron James forty years old, who who doesn't look like
he's forty when he plays NBA games. I mean, he
puts a million dollars into his body. I think every
year in terms of trying to keep up to health,
and hey, you know, Lebron might say, Luca here here,
so that pilsner here, here's a nice glass of red wine.
Speaker 9 (20:14):
You know, yeah, exactly, you know, And I would be
curious to just find out like what kind of things
immediately Lebron's go and how Lebron's going to talk to him,
because the stories that I've read is the Lebron sort
of like shoe, like how there's a Jordan shoe.
Speaker 7 (20:33):
Lebron wanted Luca to be the first athlete under his brand,
and that's obviously means there's a lot of mutual respect
between the two of them, and I think that that
could just take his game to new levels. You know,
they learn from each other, but really it's an accountability
there too, because Lebron's not going to, at forty years old,
allow Luca to take plays off defensively.
Speaker 6 (20:53):
He's going to get in his ear defensively. So just
to see how Luca's going to improve with Lebron, that's
going to be an interesting you know.
Speaker 7 (21:01):
I guess year perhaps, but Luca, don't forget he's going
to be an unrestricted free agent in twenty twenty six.
He no longer has a Supermax that he can sign
because he was traded. That's part of the new CBA
is you don't get that unless you're traded during your
rookie contract. So yeah, that max is no longer on
the table, Luca can enter free agency, and then this
(21:23):
blows up in the Lakers space because maybe Lebron also.
Speaker 6 (21:27):
Leaves in free agency or he just outright retires.
Speaker 7 (21:30):
You lose Luca, you lose your future first round pick
that you gave up that went along with Anthony Davis
to Dallas, and next thing you know, the Lakers are
basically trying to see who's going to be in free
agency if they do lose donchit.
Speaker 6 (21:43):
So there is a.
Speaker 7 (21:44):
Little bit of a potential for this to blow up
in the Maverick space again, if Luca were to say,
go to San Antonio or another Western Conference contender. Who's
preparing for this big free agency class of twenty twenty six,
which will include.
Speaker 6 (22:00):
Aaron Fox, Kevin Durant a few other players.
Speaker 7 (22:03):
So there's a few teams that are getting ready for
the summer of twenty twenty six.
Speaker 6 (22:08):
So you know, I can't remember exactly where I was
going with all of this what your question was.
Speaker 7 (22:12):
But I watched two hours of First Take this morning,
and all they talked about was this Donchez trade. So
there's so many angles that this, you know, can really
go two hours.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
That's a lot. I don't know if I can handle
too the entire show. One of the players you mentioned
will be a free agency of free agent in twenty
twenty sixty Earned Fox, who was just traded from Sacramento
to San Antonio. It was speculated that Fox wanted to
go to Essay and a workshout for the Spurs, And
I think the big part of it, carl Is san
Antonio does not give up Dylan Fasel, do not give
(22:43):
up Stefan Castle, did not give up Kilden Johnson. So
they keep their young core, and they add in a
true point guard for mister Webbin Yama.
Speaker 6 (22:52):
And all of their best picks.
Speaker 7 (22:54):
Really, I think that if you were to say, hey,
you know, take your choice of picks andanth them one
through ten, the majority of those picks would probably fall
into the latter half of that ten. So I do
think that there's something to be said about just overall,
how the Spurs didn't give up any core players that
were playing heavy rotation minutes. Trey Jones was in the rotation,
(23:16):
but obviously in a world where Deer and Fox and
Chris Pauler the point guards ahead of him, you know,
if they're healthy, then Trey's probably not going to play
all that much. Zach Collins was a little bit of
big man depth, but overall he wasn't really in the rotation.
So the Spurs do need to address some big man help.
(23:37):
But they had an all star you've been talking. You
probably if you heard Spurs fans on Twitter talk about it,
they wanted a point guard. There's a lot of pressure
from Spurs fans that I'm sure the Spurs front office.
Speaker 6 (23:48):
You know, didn't think. In fact, we just got the
official announcement that the Spurs.
Speaker 7 (23:52):
Just tweeted out that the deal has gone through, So officially,
now Daron Fox is a Spur and he's his problem.
Speaker 6 (24:00):
He's twenty seven.
Speaker 7 (24:01):
He's averaged twenty points per game over the last five
years this decade. I think that overall, you're talking about
the best pick and roll ball handler or top three
pick and roll ball handler in the league and top
three role man in Wimby. I think statistically that's supported too.
I want to say in terms of like points per
(24:22):
pick and roll ball handling, dearon Fox's number six, but
all overall efficiency has him in the top three.
Speaker 6 (24:29):
Same with Wimby, I think.
Speaker 7 (24:30):
Is the most points on a roll at two. So
the Spurs have two guys that really could grow together
over the next few years. And Daron Fox has a
injury from training camp that has probably brought down his
three point shooting percentage a little bit. But once he
gets that taken care of him might need surgery in
(24:52):
the offseason and might just need an offseason of rest.
I could see him being a better three point shooter
down the line. So the Spurs really do have a
three levels score who I think compliments Winby and the
core that they didn't have to give up anything any
of very well.
Speaker 4 (25:08):
Jimmy Butler will be playing for what team on Friday?
Speaker 7 (25:12):
Oh, I'm going to say the two falls sky Force.
It's going to get to the point where Miami assigns
them to their G League team, which is in South Dakota.
Speaker 6 (25:21):
For those of you that don't know.
Speaker 7 (25:24):
I don't know what to expect from Jimmy Butler because Okay,
Memphis makes a lot of sense he's not going to
sign an extension with Memphis. You know, that gets out public.
Apparently the Warriors would like to sign him. Warriors make
a lot of sense comes out yesterday that he's not
going to be signing an extension with the Warriors or
in the summer, however it might happen, he ops out
(25:45):
and signs and they have his rights. So really it's
almost like he's basically saying it's the Suns or the
sky Force, because I just don't necessarily see pat Riley
allowing him to, you know, win this battle of whitson
come back to the team.
Speaker 6 (26:03):
But really to go around the long.
Speaker 7 (26:05):
End of it, I think he's on the Heat because
at the end of the day, he makes so much
money that the only way you can acquire Jimmy Butler
is to give up a good player and a lot
of teams in this sort of salary cap era don't
want to take a chance on a guy like that
who could just dip out in the summer unless they
(26:26):
have assurances.
Speaker 6 (26:26):
So if it's not.
Speaker 7 (26:28):
The Suns, I guess it's going to be the Heat
and we'll we'll have to see.
Speaker 6 (26:31):
But that's been quite the Sagas.
Speaker 7 (26:33):
So I'm really happy that we've had the Luca and
dearon Fox News to really kind of calm down the
you know, the answer that's happening there, because that's a
soap opera that's been playing out on social media.
Speaker 6 (26:46):
Hasn't it?
Speaker 4 (26:47):
Which Texas? The last question for you, which Texas team
would you want to be the next five years? The Rockets,
Spurs or Mavericks has to be the Spurs.
Speaker 7 (26:57):
And you know, obviously I'm a little biased, but Victor
winbin Yama is the best two way player in the NBA.
He'll probably be the best player in the NBA in
the next year or two, if not, you know, by
the end of this season.
Speaker 6 (27:12):
He's just increasingly improving all the time.
Speaker 7 (27:15):
You have a point guard now that I think will
really be excited to be his point guard. So d
Darren Fox, he's twenty seven, so what five years from
now he'll be thirty two. You're talking about the stretch
of an All Stars prime. Victor winmbin Yama's twenty one
just scratching the surface, so you know, he'll be twenty
six by the end of that five year window.
Speaker 6 (27:37):
It seems like the Spurs have set themselves up for
very very good next five years.
Speaker 7 (27:42):
But I do want to give both teams credit. It's
very fun to both other team's credit. The Mavericks and
the Rockets definitely have reasons to be excited too. I'm
in Thompson's playing great, and Kyrie and ad are are fun.
Duo is just going to be a little bit of
shock over somebody who was by far and away a
great fan favorite.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
And Luca even he has Carl Shoning with the Austin Spurs.
Follow him on Twitter KS media underscore thirteen or just thirteen?
Speaker 6 (28:08):
Just thirteen. I didn't want any underscores in that.
Speaker 4 (28:11):
Thank you so much, Carl. I appreciate the time and
we'll talk to you soon. Thanks ever any time, Carl
Shoning from the Austin Spurs, Thanks so much. That was
a fun conversation with him man in the summer July.
That question I last asked about which team would you
want to be for the rest of this decade? You know,
I think mavers would be two because you have Luka Doncic,
(28:31):
But anymore, that's Carl Shoning up next inconceivable. On this
Monday afternoon here on The Craigway Show, on thirteen hundred this.
I am Cameron Parker filling in for Craig Way on
this Monday afternoon. Glad to have you with us on
thirteen hundred this son. If you missed our one, of
course you can go back and listen to our podcast
(28:52):
on the free iHeartRadio app. Of course, we are streaming
live on the app, but also on YouTube, Twitter and
Facebook as well. Make sure you subscribe like our show,
follow along, and of course you can always comment, leave
your feedback, or text the word Texas to eight one
to five three zero followed by your message. We just
(29:12):
give away free tickets to see Jason al Dean on
August sixteenth at the Moody Center. Coming up, I'll be
coming up quickly, just in front of the twenty twenty
five football season. But of course basketball well underway, and
we'll get to some ut basketball notes in this hour
in the next but I wanted to wrap up the
(29:34):
conversation surrounding the NBA trade, specifically the Mavericks trade with
Luka Donchets. Is this the worst trade in NBA history?
I would not argue against it. Again, Let's go ahead
and just re examine all of the pieces year for
those who just want to double check Luka Dantic, Maxi,
(30:01):
kleeber Markkeith Morris to the Lakers. Mavericks receive Anthony Davis,
guard Max Christi, a twenty twenty nine first round pick,
and the Jazz, the third team in this trade, get
Lakers guard Jalen hood Schafino, a twenty twenty five second
rounder from the Clippers and a twenty twenty five second
rounder from the Mavericks. Lukadancic has led the Mavericks to
(30:27):
NBA Finals to Western Conference Finals appearances, but of course
has suffered through numerous injuries. Has played sparingly this season,
was expected to possibly return I think later this month,
maybe around the All Star break, and obviously had a
bit of a riff with Nico Harrison. Now, when trades happen,
(30:52):
usually I think there's there's three factors to consider about
why a trade.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
Happened.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
Usually, okay, it's the player. The player may be demanding
a trade, he wants out. We see this. We just
saw it with dearon Fox, or seen it with Jimmy Butler. Well,
you've seen it in the past as well. Carmala, Anthony,
a handful of other guys the team either the second option,
the team is either trying to add a contender or
(31:22):
they're going to tear down their team. You could argue,
what's the most recent example. I would think okay See
trading Paul George the Clippers in Westbrook to the Rockets, realizing, Okay,
we're not going to be able to win with this core.
Let's go ahead and rebuild and retool for the future.
(31:42):
They got SGA from that trade and things have worked
out pretty well. The third factor I do not think
gets enough credit is ownership. Ownership plays a bigger role
in these trades, and I think most people on understand
the James Harden trade and Oka See went to the
(32:04):
NBA Finals and twenty eleven lost to the Mavericks sorry
the Miami Heat. At the core of Katie Westbrook and
James Harden man, it felt like okay See was going
to dominate the twenty tenths. But what happens in that
offseason In the summer, James Harden traded to the Houston
Rockets for Kevin Martin in the bag of Chips, a
(32:26):
trade that not a lot of people understood, and the
result of it was Clay Bennett, the thunder owner did
not want to enter into the luxury tax. The way
to avoid that, oh that James Harden took less money.
I think it was about six million dollars. Harden said no,
I want the full contract, and Sam Presty was forced
(32:48):
to deal away James Harden. Now do you think James
Sam Presty, who was one of the smartest minds of basketball,
wanted to give away James Harden, the sixth man of
the Year. I don't think so. A lot of people
bashed Presty in the front office, but you know, it
came out that ownership for OKC did not want to
trade or did not want to enter into the luxury
(33:10):
tax and pay the fine for being over the salary cap.
And of course James hardest James Harden was traded away,
goes on to win an MVP with the Rockets, and
obviously thunder got close but never were able to get
back to the NBA Finals. So the ownership part played
(33:31):
a huge role in that trade. Now with the Mavericks,
of course, under new ownership, Mark Cuban sold his majority
stake in the team to Miriam Addelson and Patrick Dumont
about three point nine million dollars. Now Cuban about twenty
seven percent of the ownership. But make no mistake, this
(33:52):
team is owned by Addison in Dumont, who, by the way,
their fortune comes from casino gambling. Las Vegas. Now a
lot of theories out there, and you know I've heard that.
You know, there's been rumors of Adelson and Dumont and
Cuban buying up land in Dallas with the hope, with
(34:13):
the hope that one day gambling would be legalized in
the state of Texas and the Mavericks and the American
Airlines Center would become a big part of them. Where
we're seeing that already with a few professional sports teams
where you can go into the arena or Spall Park
or stadium in place wagers. You can do it an
Allegiance Stadium, I think for the Las Vegas Raiders. But
(34:34):
of course, believe the the legislative session is underway. Now
I'm gonna hoad and tell you this. I'm probably gonna
get some of this political stuff a little bit incorrect,
but I do know that a bill to legalize gambling
is not going to happen this session. It's not the
state of Texas has a surplus of money they do
(34:54):
not need to make gambling legalized in the way it
works with the house mostly read, it's not going to happen.
Speaker 8 (35:02):
Now.
Speaker 4 (35:03):
There's theories that Alison and Dumont are not happy about
this and they do not want to end up paying
Luka Doncics to three hundred and forty five million dollars
as well. So there's the one part of it, the
gambling stuff, and you know, maybe Dallas or maybe Allison
and Dumont are going to try and use that to
pressure the NBA and in said of Texas to legalize gambling.
(35:25):
Just just a theory. The second part, they don't want
to pay Luca the three forty five million long term.
We talked about it with Carl showing the injuries, right,
Luka Doncis has not played that much this season. He's
had injuries his entire career. He was probably injured in
the NBA Finals, And a lot of that can go
back to his conditioning. Is he in one hundred percent
tip top shape. He is not. He is not. He's
(35:46):
come in overweight. You know, there's reports from Dallas that
he came in at two hundred and seventy pounds this season,
and obviously if he's injured, you know, he can't exercise
to a full hundred percent. So we have that part
of it, and we're seeing it right now with Philadelphia
and Joel and b. You know, when embid at twenty
(36:06):
six years old, I think there's a lot of hope
that emb was going to be he was, He's an
NBA MVP. There are a lot of hope that he
would lead Philadelphia to the NBA Championship. He has not
done so. He has come in year up to year
out of shape, overweight, not conditioned, has suffered numerous injuries,
and we're seeing it this year with the Philadelphia team
(36:26):
who went all in on Paul George and Tyrese Maxi
and Jrol Embiid and they aren't even sniffing the playing team.
So maybe Allison and Doumott and Nico Harrison saw this
and thought, you know what, we don't want to be
tied up long term into a player who does not
take his shape seriously. Well, if he hasn't taken his
(36:50):
shape seriously, he has taken the Dallas Mavericks to an
NBA championship, into Western Conference Finals appearances in every season
that you have Luca Dantics. You have a chance to
win an NBA championship, you have a chance to win
the Western Conference. He has already shown you that he
is the top three player in the league. He's one
of the most funnest players I've ever got to see
watch in person. He commands the offense and yeah, his
(37:13):
defense isn't great. But I'll tell you what, if you
wanted to build around an NBA player for the future,
I think obviously ween Benyama's number one, But two and
three is it? Luca Jokic, Shay Giannis, Luca's top five,
top four, top three. He's twenty six years old. He's
(37:33):
twenty six years old, and now he's playing for your rival,
the Los Angeles Lakers. Now Nico Harrisons saying they wanted
a big man. The reason why they didn't even talk
to any other teams is because they just wanted Anthony
Davis eighties, thirty one, Kyrie's thirty two, Klay Thompson's thirty five.
(37:53):
You think you're gonna get You're gonna get a full,
healthy season from those three guys. I mean, Kyrie Irving
is a ticking time bomb. The fact that last season
he made it through the whole year. Made it through
the playoffs without some massive scandal is crazy. He seems
to be in a great spot in terms of basketball,
(38:14):
but you're gonna trust him Ad who can't stay on
the floor, and then Klay Thompson, who is in a
different stage of his NBA career. I loved the Dallas
Mavericks roster this season. I love the way they went
out and got Klay Thompson. I love Gafford, I love Lively. PJ.
Washington is a fantastic player, Kyrie, And with Luca, I mean,
(38:34):
you went to the NBA Championship this past season. Why
not give it one more shot this year. You didn't
have to trade Luca this season. You could have traded
him in the summer. And you're telling me that the
Lakers wouldn't have traded Ad in the summer as opposed
to last week. Give it one more run. The Western
(38:55):
Conference I think is not as deep as it was
last year. You have OKAC, who's in its own tier.
But remember Dallas is four and oh against OKAC. This
season they beat Oka se last year they were four
and oh. This year, without Luka Doncis playing, they were
winning with their teams injured against the best team in
the Western Conference. But outside of that, a Rockets team
unproven young, a Memphis team unproven young, A Lakers team
(39:18):
that yeh is playing good in the last two weeks,
but you're not really scared of what they have. Maver's
going the playoffs this season as long as Luca and
gafferd Lafe and Kyrie are healthy going into the playoffs,
they're the second best team in the Western Conference and
have gotten the best the best team already before. Why
(39:40):
not let that ride out? Nikio Harrison? Why not let
that ride out? Dallas Mavericks ownership. It blows my mind.
And that's just one part of it. Not talking to
anybody else is a second part of it. Uh, Dallas
Mavericks fans, I'm truly, truly sorry about what has happened.
As a thunderfan. When we James Harden was traded, it
(40:01):
was devastating and you tried to make sense of it.
You tried to be optimistic about it, and of course
you still had Kadie and Westbrook who were twenty three,
twenty four years old. This is completely different. However, you know,
we talked about it the plug and play, the Mavericks,
I think are still going to be a decent playoff team.
You match up well with Oklahoma City, So if you
(40:22):
can figure out a way to maybe face them in
the first or second round, pull off an upset. You
know who knows, because the thunder have struggled with teams
with the rebound the ball well and eighty and Gafford
and Lively. You know, Ads talked about wanting to play
with a big man. He's going to get that with
Lively and Gafford. If those guys can get healthy and
with Kyrie Irving, they should be a formidable team offensively
(40:44):
and defensively as well. Currently, the Mavericks currently the nine
seed twenty six and twenty four. Of the Lakers, by
the way, the five seed twenty eight to nineteen. No
Luca no Ad expect the Lakers to kind of fall
off during this month of February, but would not be
He's I just see the Dallas kind of climb their
way up back into the top six. Okay, up next,
we're gonna hear from Rodney Terry kayten Shrick, added Moore.
(41:06):
As The Craig Way Show continues here on this Monday afternoon.
Speaker 5 (41:13):
Welcome back, to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
of the Longhorns. Craig Way. Follow Craig on social media
at Horn Voice.
Speaker 4 (41:36):
We continue on the Monday edition of The Craig Wait Show,
camera worker filling in for mister Way, who is feeling
a little bit under the weather. Hope Craig can to
back tow one hundred percent. It's a busy week on
the forty acres. Texas Basketball hosting Arkansas Wednesday night, seven
thirty airtime, eight o'clock tip off that'll be heard right
(41:58):
here on thirteen hundred Zone, also on cave at FM
and one O three to one Austin's eighty station. Thursday night,
Texas women's basketball looks to go for their eighth straight
win against the Vanderbilt Commodoores. That'll be at Moody Center
seven to forty five airtime, eight o'clock tip off that'll
be heard on one O three one Austin's eighty station. Additionally,
(42:22):
at six o'clock, Longhorn Weekly with Coach Rodney Terry resumes
after last week's cancelation to the Texas being stuck in Oxford, Mississippi,
thanks to fog that grounded our flight out of Oxford
to Austin, so that'll be back at six. Craig hopefully
will be healed up by then and they'll be back
(42:43):
with RT and then we'll make its way over to the
Moody Center. And then Saturday, Texas men's basketball taking on
the Vanderbilt Commodorees eleven thirty am airtime, noon o'clock tip
from Nashville, Tennesseee. My first time going to the Nationale,
and I'll tell you what, I am super excited, actually
(43:03):
hoping to go three times this year, twice for work.
One for a little facation. We'll see what Vanderbilt had
climbed by the number twenty four in the top twenty five,
and then I think kept blown out by was it Missouri?
Right after ending up being ranked. It did not take
long for them to fall back down the earth. So
they are unraked. Arkansas unraked, but picked up a huge
(43:28):
win on Saturday against Kentucky as coach John Calla Perry
against his former school for the first time, and Arkansas
took Kentucky to the wood shed in Lackington. A huge
win for Arkansas. So they're gonna come in on Wednesday night,
you know. Film themselves. Hopefully Texas will be able to
take advantage of the bravado from Arkansas. But Longhorns also
(43:52):
coming off a big win, a thirty one point victory
at LSU on Saturday, So it was a tough up
and down week for Texas basketball. Of course, me and
Craig unable to visit with you guys. We did it
in part, but not fully because of our travel schedule
thanks to us being stuck in Oxford. So it was
a five day trip for Texas basketball. Two games to play.
(44:13):
Texas goes one to one, losing to Ole Miss, who
was what twenty two to twenty three in the country
at the time, and I think they're down to twenty
five after their loss to Auburn. I hate when the
team loses the number one team in the country and
they fall down the rankings. Just does not make any sense.
So you lost to a team technically you're supposed to
lose too, but you lose spots in the rankings. But again,
(44:36):
the polls really just don't matter anyway. Texas a game
they you know, they probably should have won, had a
good chance, had a couple of good lucks miss three
throw here, miss runner here, and I missed three three
point of the tie it Texas loses. I was a
bit worried going into Saturday's game because of a couple
of things. One, you know, your flight home gets canceled
(44:57):
and you gotta fly the baton rouge. You're in a
hote hell for five days, you're not in your place
of living. You can become a little bit, you know, restless,
maybe lose a little bit of energy, you lose some focus.
But I thought Texas looked unbelievably fresh against LSU the
first half, up and down. I think had six turnovers
(45:20):
in just some real stupid turnovers, like leading the fast break,
trying to throw it up ahead and you just throw
it out a bounce. Stuff like that. Just turnovers that
really were self inflicted, not coming from LSU good defense,
just coming from self inflicted wounds. It was a three
point game in the first half against sell Us Shoe,
and I turned to Eddie Orrin of course, to the
(45:40):
Brosque broadcast analyst on the Long Court Radio now Work,
and I said, you know, Texas should be up by
twenty at half time. They just completely outplayed LSU. But
somehow LSU still found the way to stay in the ballgame.
Second half begins, three point game, four point game. Sorry,
about two minutes into the contest, I think Corey Chests
(46:03):
had a layup. He scored I think all six of
his points in the second half to start the second half,
and then Texas went on a twenty two to six
run and some of the best basketball I think Texas
has played all season long, and it was coming from everybody.
Jordan Pope, Tremon, Mark Kayden Schederick Trad Johnson, Arthur Caluma,
(46:26):
Defon Pryor, Nick Cody, Julian Larry, Chasing Kent, everybody was
getting in on the action. Went on a twenty two
to six run to put them up by double digits.
In the second half, Tigers would cut it to eighteen
(46:48):
three point play that. There was a moment there in
the beginning second half, or about halfway through it, LSU
got into the bonus one to one. We're shooting three throws. Okay,
you know, maybe they'll sneak back into this game.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
Nope.
Speaker 4 (47:01):
Texas would end the game almost on seventeen to five spurt.
Prior had a huge put back to put Texas up
by it by thirty points, and that was that Texas
goes ahead and comes away with a eighty nine the
fifty eighth victory, gets back in the win calumn and
now currently four and five in conference play overall their
record this season, and I'm not going to get two
(47:23):
worked up over regular season records because I just don't
think they mean that much even when you look at
it in the in the SEC standings don't even show
it at fifteen and seven actually on the season, which
again I don't know what that means anything, but they
are four and five, and I think that matters because
I think for Texas, you know, to be comfortably in
the NCATE tournament, you want to be you want to
(47:46):
be about eight wins. That's the goal for the staff
is the be at eight wins. And if you're going
to lose close schemes to Tennessee, an Ole, miss An, Auburn, Florida,
you got to make sure that you the teams who
you're supposed to be. That's the Oklahomas, the Georgias, the arkansass,
(48:06):
the LSU's, the South Carolina's in so far the teams
who are below five hundred in conference play. Texas is
currently two and oh against them, and they play another
one on Wednesday in Arkansas and coming up against Vanderbilt,
who are four and four. Texas really needs to go
too and oh this week to continue to push themselves
into a good spot into the tournament. Now mentioned, it
(48:30):
was a great second half, maybe the best basketball I've
seen Texas play this season. You're saying, Okay, LSU is
one in seven, one win. Of course they should win
by thirty points. Not so fast, my friend. Here's why.
LSU lost to Ole miss by twelve, lost to Vanderbilt
by eight, lost to Missouri by only sixteen, beat Arkansas
(48:53):
by four only, lost to A and M by eleven,
lost to Alabama number four by seven, lost to Auburn
by thirteen. Getting this is their worst loss in conference play,
their worst loss in conference play this season. They're a
team that has put up a good fight, and that's
how this conference is. Arkansas, South Carolina even you know,
they're not getting blown out by thirty points a game.
So for Texas, a win by thirty, I think it's
(49:15):
a bit of a statement here.
Speaker 8 (49:16):
Now.
Speaker 4 (49:16):
Of course, we'll see what happens this week. Gotta go
to a know this week, I think you gotta go
to and No that it'll be you gotta get above
five hundred in conference play, and if you can be
at five and five through the first ten games of
conference play, that is a win. Considering how good the
SEC is, Auburn, that's the best team in the country.
(49:37):
After seeing them play Texas there, they are my pick
to win March Masters. As long as Pettiford and Kelly
and Janiah Broomer healthy, they are my pick to win
the NCACH. They they're without a doubt, the most complete
team in the country, and they have five guys on
the floor who can score, and they play darn good
defense as well. Two other notes, and we'll get to
(49:59):
some audio from our the next segment. Kayden Shederick season
high sixteen points and ten rebounds in Tremon Marcus season
high eighteen points, Tremon Mark first half defensively and Cam Carter,
he put him in jail. Carter came in as one
of the I think the leading score.
Speaker 3 (50:18):
In the SEC.
Speaker 4 (50:20):
Might want to double check my work on that seventeen
points a game, shooting forty four percent from the floor
going into that game. Let's see, finished with what six
points on two to seven shooting. He just checked out
in the second half. He did not want any part
of what Tremon Mark was doing to him, and Tremont
didn't scroll out in the first half, and the second
(50:42):
half he sure did. He was knocking down jumpers, three pointers,
I believe had a big and one as well. Loved
love what I'm seeing from Tremon Mark. He's a next
factor on this team.
Speaker 8 (50:53):
Guys.
Speaker 4 (50:53):
If he can lock in defensively and continue to play hard,
this will help this Texas team go deep in the postseason.
But they get that leave. They got to pick up
two wins this week, starting off with Arkansas, who, by
the way, is the old school of mister Tremon Mark.
We're going to continue with our Texas basketball conversation up next,
(51:13):
going to hear from Rodney Terry and Caden Shedrick as
a Pregway show continues here on thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 6 (51:26):
We're back.
Speaker 5 (51:27):
It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Vane broadcaster
and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
Speaker 4 (51:40):
So maybe lost in that two game, five day road
trip for Texas was the fact that head coach Rodney
Terry actually was battling the flu and for most of
the Thursday and Friday was trying to rest and recover
and looked appeared to be well on Saturday, said he
felt better, looked pretty good as well, and of course
(52:00):
Texas look good in the basketball court and the thirty
point thirty one point victory over l Shoe And after
the game, our own Craig Way and Eddie Orrin visited
the head coach the Texas Longhorns, Rodney Terry.
Speaker 1 (52:11):
I know things that they're sliding scales and stuff like that,
but would it be safe to say that, uh, this
was one of the better second halfs your team has
played the entire season.
Speaker 10 (52:20):
You know what really chaluts the guys that have time
to trust the process. I mean we've getting We've been
getting bet over the last three weeks of the season,
both offense and defense. Mean, we just need to put
together a forty minute game to where we competed the
entire time. You know, I thought we did that for
a better part of the other night at Ole Miss
and didn't have anything to show for it.
Speaker 3 (52:39):
Feel like we deserved to win that game.
Speaker 10 (52:41):
And and but but in the at least like like
we playing you have it for one night. It's a
quick turnaround. We didn't get a chance to go home.
I like to again give my staff a lot of credit, uh,
in terms of what they do every game, in terms
of preparation for our guys, but in particular this game.
Speaker 3 (52:56):
I mean I was on my death bed for thirty Yeah,
a lot of a lot.
Speaker 1 (52:59):
Of people don't know this, that the head basketball coacher
is really fighting through a flu bug of the last
forty eight hours or really had a bad oo.
Speaker 10 (53:06):
It knocked me down pretty good. I mean, you know,
it took a lot out of that game. Took a
lot out of me going into the game. I was
not feeling well. But but but after that game, I mean,
one I trainer, I mean, he's got more men than
me right now that I can speak of.
Speaker 3 (53:20):
But he did a tremendous job.
Speaker 10 (53:22):
I had a fever running there for a good while,
and we finally got the fever to finally break by
four o'clock yesterday, and I could kind of get with
the team that night a little bit without being contagious.
Speaker 1 (53:30):
You know, one thing, I wanted to get your thoughts
on two guys and what I mean, you had so
many guys with the big accomplishments today and contributions, but
what Tramond did on Cam Carter, I thought really was
stood out and what Cayden did there with the double
double on the way he played, I also gave you
that big inside presence.
Speaker 3 (53:49):
Cam Carter the leading scorer in the SEC right now.
Speaker 10 (53:52):
He's been a guy that's kind of been a thrown
an outside over the course of his career, a case
eight really good player, I mean, terrific player. And we
knew going into the game, and we could do a
great job of, you know, not shutting him down, but
containing him and not having a crazy night, and we'd
be in a great position in terms of being able
to win this ball game. You know, series are really
good player. But Traymont played excellent defense, you know, but
(54:13):
he also brought his offensive game too, and one of
his better games of the year. I thought he was
really good. I thought choosing high for seats and high
for him, but both then just played the complete ball game.
Kateen played really well for us in the paint. We
wanted attack inside out and had one of his better
ball games of the year.
Speaker 3 (54:27):
And you know, I thought, collectively as a group.
Speaker 10 (54:29):
Our whole team just I wanted our team to be
a hungry team, and they were hungry.
Speaker 1 (54:33):
Were you determined to keep Kate out there to let
him get that double double because the bench just went
crazy and he said he he said, I had nine
rebounds of the twelve minute mark, so I was still
trying to get it.
Speaker 3 (54:41):
Yeah, no, he earned it. He earned it today, you know.
Speaker 10 (54:43):
And and again he was going to be a focal
point in terms of really trying to score in the
paint the last ball game. You know, they they did
a good job attacking us in the paint, their big
guys guys a little bit. But we felt like coming
into this game we needed to play a little bit
more inside out and have a physical presence as well.
And Kate had a great ball game against those guys
last year and he used to and as well.
Speaker 3 (55:00):
So, uh, he did a great job today for us.
Speaker 2 (55:03):
I thought today's game was a direct carry over for
from a great practice yesterday. I thought the spirited focus prayer, Yes,
Theay's practice one of your better ones.
Speaker 10 (55:12):
Yeah, maybe I should just stay away from practice sometimes
the day before the game.
Speaker 3 (55:15):
And let my coaches had those guys did an excellent job.
Speaker 10 (55:19):
Now they've done a great job all year long with
with preparation and h uh, they really had our guys
locked in and focused for this ball game here in
terms of what we needed to.
Speaker 3 (55:28):
Do prep wise.
Speaker 10 (55:29):
All of our coaches are involved in every game in
terms of our prenp work. Frank does the offense, Steve
does the defense. You know, Matts and today had the scout.
You know, Byron has special situations, Brandon has you know,
personnel one on one stuff. So you know, every game,
our guys are involved in the preparation piece and they
do a.
Speaker 3 (55:47):
Great job along with our support staff. I can't can't
leave our support staff out.
Speaker 10 (55:51):
They do a lot of a lot of workman type
work as well in terms of hours they put in
as well.
Speaker 1 (55:56):
No doubt about it. So you come up on this
next game against Arkansas with a chance to get back
to level five hundred conference, playing the toughest conference in
the country that's obviously big, and just maintaining the momentum.
Speaker 3 (56:08):
Yeah, you know, you know you have these games again
for one night.
Speaker 10 (56:10):
We're gonna have a really talented Arkansas team coming in
a lot of respect for coach cal And in his
program and and in his coaching career for that matter,
and things, so we know we're gonna get a team
that's gonna come in and really push us to the limit.
Speaker 3 (56:23):
Uh, and being at home, it's not enough in this league.
Speaker 10 (56:25):
When you're at home, man, you got to you gotta
have you a games just like you do on the road,
you know. So every night's battle in this in this league,
I mean, it's it's why it's the best league in
the country.
Speaker 1 (56:34):
Hey, Artie, thanks for the time. Congratulations on the winning.
Glad you're able to heal up.
Speaker 3 (56:38):
Oh, thanks, Greg.
Speaker 10 (56:39):
I'm looking forward to well, we're looking forward to getting
back to Austin. We've been out on this road for
a whole week, so the boys and ourselves are ready
to get back to Austin.
Speaker 4 (56:46):
They were very excited to get back to Austin self
included five days. I think I spent more money buying
clothes than I ever have on a work trip. Shout
out to the Dillards and the Tzara in the H
and M at the shopping mall. That helps supply myself
and Eddie Orn's clothing for the rest of that trip.
(57:08):
To Baton Rouge now in Texas. Will take on Arkansas
next onesday. You heard RT talk about Kaden Schedrick Craig
as well a double double sixteen points, ten rebounds. Craig
and Eddie also visited with Kaden Shedrick after the victory
in Baton Rouge.
Speaker 1 (57:27):
I saw you exchanging pleasantries with Ji Bailey. I say,
he's from Wilson, so you guys must know each other. Yeah,
we both played for Gardner Road. Okay, you guys really
worked very hard. You individually, but the team I thought
did a really good job against Cam Carter. How about
the fault on how everybody teamed up defensively to do
what you had to do today.
Speaker 11 (57:44):
Yeah, that was a big emphasis for us, not only
this game, but the last few games. You know, I
think that a lot of guys would have been taken
it personal and trying to guard extra hard. And you know,
I thought that Tremont had a tough matchup tonight. And
Cam Carty is a last scorer, the best born sec
at Tama. What was I say? Two for seven? Taman
did his job, The team did our job, and we
came out with the win.
Speaker 1 (58:04):
How about you with what you were able to do.
I know you felt good about that three. You totally
shit pluckers. You said I can shoot the three. Yeah,
you know, I kind of went way for it for
a while there. You know, I hit when at A
and M took two to night.
Speaker 11 (58:17):
They both felt good and one went in, so you know,
that always feels good, So hopefully I can keep going
on that the rest of the season.
Speaker 2 (58:22):
I really thought you did a great job working early,
showing the high hand insteads position, and working inside out
with this team.
Speaker 11 (58:28):
Yes, sir, Yeah, I thought that that was definitely a
big emphasis for us going to this game, was playing
inside out. We know if we get more paint touches,
we'll get more assistant we'll score a lot more points.
And you know, playing team basketball, that's what we're starting
to shift to. And I think that we've looked a
lot better recently playing this Well.
Speaker 1 (58:42):
All right, all your teammates knew you were one rebound
shot the double double? Did you know what at the
time that you were oute there?
Speaker 6 (58:46):
Oh?
Speaker 11 (58:46):
I knew it the whole time. They told me I
have time to go get my double double in. So
I had like nine rebounds with like twelve minutes left,
came back in with eight minutes left, and.
Speaker 4 (58:54):
It felt like everything was going in.
Speaker 11 (58:55):
Like I was running to the glass every time I
couldn't get Nick was able to keep a ball alive.
Speaker 8 (59:00):
I was able to write it down.
Speaker 11 (59:00):
They gave me the boards, so you know, always feels good.
Speaker 1 (59:02):
How long did this road trip seem because they're getting
stuck at Oxford on Wednesday night.
Speaker 11 (59:07):
Yeah, it was definitely a tough trip, but I think
that we grew a lot as a team here. I think,
you know, we came a lot closer. You know, it
was just kind of unfortunate our flight got canceled and
all that, but I thought we made the most out
of the trip and we were able to split the
road games, were always going to SEC and ready to
go on home tonight.
Speaker 1 (59:23):
Okay, great effort, Thanks for that. I appreciate it, so
thank you.
Speaker 4 (59:26):
Being with those guys all week, you could definitely see
the team starting to grow together a bit more. I
feel like the team already has great chemistry. I think
all the guys get along very well. There there's some
there's some characters on the team. Nick Cody has a
fantastic personality, Trey Giantstons got a good personality, Jewels, Jason Kent.
(59:48):
All those guys are our characters, Kayten as well, and
so off the court, they all get along very well.
But you know, when you're stuck together for a week,
and you know Thursday Friday, not a lot of basketball
tivity you have to do. You do have to hang
out with each other a lot, and we're kind of
seeing that throughout the season. One note real quick, before
we hit this break on Thursday, So Thursday, I think
(01:00:10):
it was actually Friday. So of course, usually how the
way it goes, Texas wouldn't have gotten in the Baton
Rouge until Friday afternoon. Probably at that time the team
either would not have had a shoot around or if
they did, it would have been Friday night at the
Pete Mayor Pitch Assembly Center. Now, because Texas has gotten
in on Thursday and the guys didn't have a practice
(01:00:31):
Thursday night, I think the staff wanted to get the
guys a practice early Friday, but for whatever reason, the
timing did not work. With LSU, they probably had their
own practice Friday morning. Texas didn't want to wait until
Friday night, especially with a little bit of an earlier
time on Saturday, so the team practiced at Catholic High
School in New Orleans or sorry, in Baton Rouge, excuse me,
(01:00:53):
in North Northeast Baton Rouge Catholic high school fairly new
as well, was a twenty twenty three state champion basketball
in their district, class whatever. So we pull in to
this high school. It's to all boys academy, and we're
getting heckled. We're getting hackled by kids. They're calling us,
or they called us, they called the team a sorry
(01:01:14):
blank team. You know, these are freshman kids, just heckling
Trey Johnson and the staff. And then we got in
the practice and everyone there was super nice, fantastic staff.
By the way, he's just high school kids being high
school kids. Most of them are probably LSU fans, but
they came in to watch the practice. A nice high
school gymnasium. We're getting horns down shot at us. Pretty funny,
(01:01:35):
but it kind of energized the guys. I think a
lot of smiles in practice, you know, being back in
a high school gymnasium. I think a lot of nostalgic
feelings for those guys, you know, kind of going back
to when you just hoop to have fun.
Speaker 8 (01:01:48):
Right.
Speaker 4 (01:01:49):
We saw that and I think that benefited the Texas
team and the chemistry. And we saw that on Saturday,
and we saw it when Kayt and Sedder got that
tenth rebound art call the time out and the team
came over and celebrated with Cayden as well. So Taxes
with a victory thirty one point victory over LSU and
(01:02:09):
now onto a one night homestand Wednesday against Arkansas. They'd
love to go back to five hundred in conference play
for the first time this season. We'll wrap up hour
two up next year on the Craig Way Show. Cameron
Park are filling in for mister Way, filling a little
bit under the weather. Hopefully we'll be back tomorrow with
some much needed rest for Craig, who you know, if
(01:02:31):
I thought my travels were crazy past week, a little
bit different for Craig, a little bit insight. And you
may have heard this this past week when he was
on with Andrew Zimmel. So Tuesday leave for Oxford, the
Texas loses the ole miss, first time Chris Beard has
faced Texas since his removal from the program. We find
(01:02:52):
out post came that we're not getting out of Oxford
that night or at Tupelow rather because the airport's and
Tupelau about an hour drive, So we know we're going
to have to stay an extra night in Oxford and
then drive the tube below and maybe go back to
Austin the next day. We'll we find out that because
the turnaround process, you fly in to Austin twenty four
(01:03:13):
hours later, we're going to have to be back at
the airport to fly the Baton Ruge. The team decides
to go ahead and let's just go to Baton Rouge
and cat LSU and prepare there.
Speaker 8 (01:03:22):
Well.
Speaker 4 (01:03:24):
In Texas women's basketball had a game that night against
Missouri Thursday night that moody and also, you know, there's
Longhorn Weekly with coach Terry that gets canceled obviously because
coach Terry's not going to do it from a zoom
room at the hotel in Baton Rouge, although the Renaissance
Fantastic Hotel I highly recommend. Also, coach Terry had the flu. Now,
(01:03:44):
Roger Wallace usually would have gone in, but of course
Roger Wallace sports director of KIXA and has other duties
and you know, twenty four hour notice that ideal. So
Craig Thursday morning takes an uber from Oxford to Memphis
garrit A. Guess how much that uber cost? One hundred
(01:04:05):
and sixty dollars. Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and expense
that one sixty Uber up to Memphis, then flies to DFW,
then from DFW flies to Austin, and then from Austin
goes back up the Georgetown change of clothes, drives to
Moody calls Texas against Missouri. Longhorns win. Friday, flies in
(01:04:26):
the baton Rouge calls a game against LSU Saturday. We
fly it back to Austin Saturday night. Then Sunday drives
down the College station Taxa women's basketball takes on the Aggies.
Longhorns win by twenty. Craig drives back up to Austin. Yeah,
so it kind of makes sense why Bide takes a
(01:04:48):
toll after a little bit, and especially with high flu
season allergies, doesn't take much to get you sick on that.
So hopefully Craig gets better a little bit less of
a crazy travel week for US. Friday, we're out Andrew
zimm we'll be back on for US. We fly to Nashville.
We'll be back probably within twenty four hours because Texas
plays at noon, so we'll be in Nashville for maybe
(01:05:09):
a day if that. Come back and then Texas Texas
actually has a nice home schedule coming up, folks. So
you're looking for a Texas basketball game. You got Arkansas
on Wednesday night at Moody. This is the men's by
the way. Then next week Alabama comes in, Who's out?
Number three on Tuesday night? And then Kentucky, Who's what? Twelve?
(01:05:31):
What did I say they were at? They come in
on Saturday. Now the women's side gets really fun the
next two weeks. Vanderbilt at home Thursday night, Sunday, number
two South Carolina at Moody one o'clock. Be there, be
there in the following Sunday, LSU kim Mulki, be there.
(01:05:52):
Actually where we ate for dinner on Friday night was
the same place to Kimmulki was that I was looking
for some ridiculous pink sparkle jacket. Did not see it,
so I did not know she was there until afterwards.
But LSU will be in town in two weeks. So
if you're looking to come to a Texas basketball game
the next two weeks are I deal? Okay mentioned women's
(01:06:16):
basketball Texas eighty to sixty over Texas A and M
last night, the only meeting between the two schools this
season a little bit odd. Texas will play A and
M twice and men's side of things, but only once
in the women's side of things. So their only meeting
at College Station Cotton Holdings lone star showdown, Texas takes
another point. Did so in a game in which they
(01:06:41):
trailed for a little sorry they were, they led for
I believe all of it. But A and M would
make a push here and there. Not the best season
for the Aggies, but Texas ultimately would pull away and
take the victory. I said, eighty sixty seventy fifty. Excuse me,
but Maddie Booker seventeen points thirteen rebounds by the way,
her career high, her fourth double double of the season.
(01:07:04):
Roy Harmony one of her best games, shooting y seven
to nine, shooting fifteen points, five assists, one turnover. Texas
only had seven turnovers in the game, the same amount
that the Texas men's side had, and the seven turnover
came at the very end of the game when Julian
Larry took a shot clock violation. Because up by thirty one,
(01:07:25):
you can't bring down your field goal percentage, right, guys,
so did so that Texas went up early just did
not look back. Aggie's only shot thirty five percent in
the fourth quarter, not ideal for them. Shay Holly had
had a big game shooting, had knocked down a pair
of three pointers that were ideal for Texas. Led by
seventeen points at a halftime, ended up winning by twenty.
(01:07:47):
Now will face Standerbilt on Thursday, who are ranked twenty third.
After the game, Craig Way and Kathy Harston visited with
coach Schaeffer in his return to College Station as the
head coach the Texas Long words.
Speaker 1 (01:08:01):
We said this before the game. I know that this
place means a lot to you, and you had some
great years here and all that kind of stuff. So
in your current line of work, it's it's good to
come in here and get.
Speaker 6 (01:08:11):
A win, isn't it.
Speaker 8 (01:08:11):
No doubt, it wouldn't matter where I'm at. You know,
you want to come in here and play well and
you want to win.
Speaker 12 (01:08:17):
And certainly had some really special years here. Obviously, my
kids went to half of their high school years here,
and so we have lots of friends that are still here.
Speaker 8 (01:08:25):
But you know, business is business.
Speaker 12 (01:08:27):
And you've got to come in here and play and
and you know, we had some moments where we played
really well, and we had some moments that we didn't.
Speaker 8 (01:08:35):
And the good thing is is you got You've.
Speaker 12 (01:08:38):
Got a twenty point win that you can teach with,
and we got plenty to clean up and get better.
But at the end of the day, we're going to
take that win and get home and get ready for
the next one.
Speaker 8 (01:08:51):
I don't even know who that.
Speaker 1 (01:08:52):
Is, but we'll get ready.
Speaker 8 (01:08:54):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (01:08:55):
Yeah, Kathy mentioned at the start of the game that
this was a game that we felt like your team
needed to go out and establish control of this thing
and impose the will early, and it looked like they
did that right from the start.
Speaker 8 (01:09:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:09:10):
I thought the press was good early and kind of
credit some problems for him, and we got some turnovers
off that, and then you know, I thought we executed
really good the first half.
Speaker 8 (01:09:18):
Second half not so much.
Speaker 12 (01:09:20):
Really disappointed and in some of our execution in that
third quarter got outscored.
Speaker 8 (01:09:26):
Fourth was a little better.
Speaker 12 (01:09:27):
But you know, I still think we should be scoring
eighty points a night. I think I've got the personnel
to do it. You know, Jacquelina got a bunch of
good looks tonight. She's got to do better. Than I
think she was three for nine and half. She made
both of them in the second half. But you know,
Shay had some really good looks. She made two big ones,
you know there when we got in the second half
(01:09:48):
when they had cut it down a little bit.
Speaker 8 (01:09:50):
And so I thought Rory played really good. I thought.
Speaker 12 (01:09:54):
Bree played really good off the bench, gave us a spark,
had four assists, no turnovers, So she's getting more time
as we go, She's going to earn more time, and
so we just I think the biggest thing tonight, I
thought our five players could have been way better.
Speaker 8 (01:10:09):
You know.
Speaker 12 (01:10:10):
I thought we kind of got pushed around down there
a little bit and we.
Speaker 8 (01:10:14):
Just weren't very tough down there. So we got to
be better.
Speaker 12 (01:10:17):
But again we're Booker was seven fourteen, very efficient, had
thirteen rebounds, double double, you know, five assists, only one turnover,
two steals, had a block.
Speaker 8 (01:10:30):
The kid's just special, man.
Speaker 12 (01:10:31):
You know, she's just a really special kid and great kid.
Speaker 1 (01:10:35):
You know, the other thing you told me before the game,
he said, we've got to do a better job on
cutting back and cutting down on turnovers. Through three quarters,
you had five turnovers but did not allowed a single
point off a turnover. They got a couple of buckets
and garbage down there. But were you pleased with what
you saw in terms of taking better care of the ball?
Speaker 8 (01:10:54):
Well, we had.
Speaker 12 (01:10:54):
Two turnovers at half, so I was really pleased with that.
Seven For the game, I'm really happy with We only
forced eleven, which is not typical for us, but we
held them to thirty seven percent shooting, and third quarter
was just bad. You know, It's just they shot forty
six percent and we just we weren't very good in
the third quarter, which is disappointing coming out of the
(01:11:15):
locker room. But at the end of the day again,
and we're still trying to play with a different, different
type of lineup, and you know, we were better today
in some aspects. And again, when you got a team
that's playing zone most of the game against you, sometimes
you get down.
Speaker 8 (01:11:32):
To the shock.
Speaker 12 (01:11:32):
I thought we made some big shots at the end
of the clock, you know, I thought kids, Rory made
some big shots and Maddie and so you know, we did.
We did a good job with that. So again, twenty
point win. I'm not going to be unhappy about it.
We certainly have a lot that we can learn from the.
Speaker 8 (01:11:47):
Tape, But we're gonna give God the glory.
Speaker 12 (01:11:50):
For win number I don't even know twenty now twenty two,
and I don't know how mean we won in the league,
but eight and one, So we'll give God the glory
for that and get back home and try to get
ready for a home game on Thursday night.
Speaker 8 (01:12:05):
This doesn't seem like we've been home very much.
Speaker 1 (01:12:08):
And it's an eight o'clock game, so I know you'll
want a big crowd out furs, no doubt. All right, Vic,
thanks for attacking grats, all right, lord and took them morn.
Speaker 4 (01:12:15):
Fic Shaver having no idea what day it is, who
they're playing.
Speaker 8 (01:12:19):
All that.
Speaker 4 (01:12:19):
It tells you how immensed she should be, how immersed rather
he is in the opponent that he faces.
Speaker 8 (01:12:26):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (01:12:26):
Lasting from women's basketball game, Roy Harmon mentioned her effective
night five to seven, shooting thirteen points. She visited postgame
with Craig and Kathy.
Speaker 1 (01:12:37):
Was it the feeling that you guys felt like you
really could and should take the game right to them
right from the outset, because that's what it looked like.
Speaker 13 (01:12:44):
Yeah, you know us, you always want to punch first,
and it was I think it was a little bit
of a slow start, like our defense was a little shaky,
but honestly, like we just want to perns first. We
had him pretty good in the first quarter. I think
we held him to nine in the second. So you know,
we're just trying to get better game by game.
Speaker 1 (01:13:01):
You've said that with Madison and with other weapons, you're
more than happy just to get the ball again them
and let them do their thing and score. Yet there
were several opportunities today, several times today where you went
in took it upon yourself. How much of that is
just the situation of what you're seeing from the opponent,
and how much of it is knowing what you can
(01:13:22):
do against a certain opponent.
Speaker 13 (01:13:23):
I think it's time and place. There's a time where
I can attack and maybe I can draw my defense
and kick it out to other teammates. And we have
so many threats on this team, and you can't not
saying nobody can't, but you can't do with all of
us at the same time. So I think when we
all stick to our role and do what we're on
the team for the in starting our role, I think
(01:13:44):
it looks really good and we're able to get all
those touches.
Speaker 3 (01:13:47):
We shared the ball really well.
Speaker 13 (01:13:48):
We had twenty two assists and I think we had
nineteen last game, So that was one of his key
keys to the games, just sharing the ball.
Speaker 1 (01:13:54):
And taking care of it as well. You didn't have
much in the way of turn know.
Speaker 13 (01:13:57):
When I think about it, I think we had a
few offen of fouls and that really, you know, spikes
it up a little bit. But other than that, we
didn't just give them the ball, so.
Speaker 4 (01:14:05):
It was good.
Speaker 1 (01:14:05):
It'd be nice to get a little rest before the
next game Thursday.
Speaker 4 (01:14:08):
Yeah, I'm I'm good.
Speaker 6 (01:14:10):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 1 (01:14:11):
You've been saying you haven't been playing as many minutes,
so you feel good. I mean today was quite yet
four minutes.
Speaker 13 (01:14:17):
And then the other day was quite some minutes, So
I think I'm in really good shape right now.
Speaker 8 (01:14:22):
I'm feel good.
Speaker 13 (01:14:23):
I just have to stay healthy, stand the weight room,
stay in the treatment room, and just understand that I
need to be able to perform even if it does
take forty minutes.
Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
It looks like it's working. Thanks Roy, appreciate it. Thank you,
it certainly does.
Speaker 4 (01:14:35):
Ray Arm starting to play a little bit more confident
down the stretch, jelling more with Matty Booker, who I
think she only played about twelve games for their last season,
and of course the additions of Jordan Lee Passed, bre
Preston and Kayla Olier. Texas takes on Vanderbilt Thursday night,
eight o'clock at the mood Up. Next Eric Henry from
Horns two four seven will stop, but I talk a
(01:14:57):
little Texas basketball football are schmanning to shard choice all
that and more as the final hour of The Craigway
Show continues on thirteen hundred. The zone.
Speaker 5 (01:15:14):
Back to the Craigway Show. Connect with Craig through the
text line by texting Texas to eight one five three
zero followed by your message. Standard message and data rates
may apply.
Speaker 4 (01:15:27):
On the back stretch of the day. Is Craigway Show
Cameron Parker filling in for Craig Way on this Monday afternoon,
and please to be joined by my good friend from
Horns two for seven, Eric Henry, who actually got to
see in Baton Rouge. Now, you made the trip to
Baton Rouge and the College station this past weekend, right?
Not many people did that?
Speaker 14 (01:15:47):
Uh, Kim, No, believe it or not, I did not
make the trip to College so you were in seasons,
so just baton rouge. Yeah, with College Station for the
men's game earlier this this season. But no, that had
been a heck of a turnaround. But no, glad, to
be honest, you glad to be doing this in Austin.
I know you guys had a tough stretch trying to
get back to Austin. I'm sure that both of us
are happy to be back here in the Capitol.
Speaker 4 (01:16:08):
Of Texas without a doubt, especially with this beautiful weather.
Let's start with some good news in the Texas football front.
It appears that running backs coach dshar Choice is going
to stay in Austin. He interviewed with the Dallas Cowboys
for the same position. Believe it or not, to join
that staff, he would actually have to take a pay cut,
not surprising. With Jerry Jones, Cowboys now are believe interviewing
(01:16:28):
Rashad Shamples, who also coached at Texas, he might be
willing to come to Dallas. But the good news here
Eric is that Texas looks like they're going to retain
their running backs coach. And also he's going to get
an extension too, and probably a pay increase.
Speaker 14 (01:16:44):
Yeah, Yeah, It's funny you talk about the Cowboys still interviewing.
It looks as if they've made a decision going with
Derek Foster. Oh really, well, that certainly, yeah, that certainly
is the you know, Cowboys loss, but certainly Texas's game.
Here's the thing in my mind, it's funny you kind of,
you know, joked about it being a pay cut, right,
that would have been the situation a while. Listen, we
can get on the Cowboys or a marrit of things.
(01:17:06):
It goes to show just how much that Texas and
Company are really valuing their assistance.
Speaker 4 (01:17:11):
They weren't afraid to go.
Speaker 14 (01:17:12):
Out and make Kyle Flood, PK p Kukowski, and Jeff
Banks three of the highest paid coordinators in the nation.
With all those guys getting paid increases, which along with
Steve Sarkasian's pay increase that he's gotten over the last
two years, that now trickles down to Tashard choice, who's
going to be a highly coveted guy.
Speaker 4 (01:17:31):
The reason I think it was cool two reasons. I'll say,
I think it's crucial.
Speaker 14 (01:17:33):
One, you had to make it tough on tshard to
make that decision to leave.
Speaker 4 (01:17:37):
It depends on what his aspirations are right.
Speaker 14 (01:17:39):
If he has aspirations of being a coordinator or maybe
a head coach at at any level, then maybe you
make that decision. But financially speaking, he's got it great
here at Texas, which leads me into the second point,
which is, damn, he's done.
Speaker 4 (01:17:53):
An excellent job with this room since he's been here.
Taken over.
Speaker 14 (01:17:56):
Stan Drayden, of course, was part of Steve Sarkisian's initial staff.
Look no further than B. John Robinson, Rosehawn Johnson, Jonathan Brooks, CJ.
Speaker 4 (01:18:05):
Baxter.
Speaker 14 (01:18:05):
He gets the nation's number one recruit in his class,
and C. J. Baxter he goes down the position. While
for the run game was hit or missed this year,
you can't say in terms of development, in terms of talent,
that room is lacking any of that. With Contravian Weisner,
Jarret Gibson, the list goes on. So a huge you know,
a huge I don't say coup, but great for Texas
(01:18:27):
and c's Sarkisian to retain to j our choice of services.
Speaker 4 (01:18:29):
Yeah, I think I would argue the opposite. Well, we
saw out of Trey Weisner. I mean, when Wiser came
to Texas, he was thought of as an add on
to John D. Cook in Wiser one thousand yard rusher
one the one of the best in all college football
in Jaydon Blue as well, and not just a running
back aspect, Eric, he's also a great recruiter outside of
(01:18:50):
the running back room.
Speaker 5 (01:18:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 14 (01:18:52):
No, listen again when you talk about it, and I
think here's something that goes a little bit understated, right,
Steve Sarkesian, And you know, you take a look look
at maybe Jeff Banks or p k or Kyle Flood.
They're not necessarily guys who have those quote unquote ties.
Although you know Kyle Flood did coach in Atlanta. Steve
Sarkisian coach at Alabama, don't necessarily have those ties to
(01:19:13):
the Southeast in the South. It we're going to be
major recruiting areas for Texas in the Southeastern Conference. That
was something I'll be honest with you, Camp prior to
the addition of Kenny Baker on this staff, I was curious,
how would they recruit Georgia, Florida, Alabama, you know those areas, Louisiana,
so on and so forth. Right, Because he lose a
Bo Davis both of course he replaced with Kenny Baker,
(01:19:35):
guys who kind of had more ties to the South
and the Southeast, to shard choice be able to go
into Florida get a CJ. Baxter of course has those
recruiting ties in Georgia, Kenny Baker as well. I think
we need take a look at this staff and kind
of the composition of it. Cam keeping to Shark choice
on the rosters, on the roster, on the staff, I
should say he it was a great back of the
(01:19:56):
time you going through on the roster, but keeping him
on the staff is key for that keeping those recruiting strongholds.
As Texas continues to compete for, you know, recruiting battles
in the SEC.
Speaker 4 (01:20:08):
You always think about player continuity and players returning after
a year. How about the coaching staff. I believe going
into this next season, Texas it's not losing any staff members.
And since Sark got here, it's been p k on
the defensive coordinator side, it's been Sark the offensive side
with Kyle Floods. So there's always gonna be roster turnover
(01:20:29):
every year. But the key for Sark and building this
program Eric is being able to keep his staff. And
there's there's been departures. You know, there's been guys who
have been fired or guys who had been kept on.
But for the most part, I believe Eric that Texas
going into twenty twenty five with most of their staff retained. Yeah, no,
you most of it.
Speaker 14 (01:20:50):
Nearly all of it can and I appreciate the opportunity
to plug, you know, a cheap plug here art like
Jess published about ten minutes ago talking about did Texas
have a successful offseason and.
Speaker 4 (01:20:59):
Part of that with staff retainment?
Speaker 14 (01:21:01):
No, they retain all of their assistants, right, and you
talked about it. Listen, in today's college football, it's rare
if you're having success and you have talented coordinators to
bring back all three of those coordinators for a year five.
You talk about PK on the defensive side, Jeff Banks,
special teams, offensive coordinator, Kyle Flud.
Speaker 4 (01:21:18):
Of course you reference Steve Sarkigan, you know, doing the
play calling.
Speaker 14 (01:21:21):
But Kyle Flood, even from an offensive line perspective, is
huge to have him back in terms especially this year,
right with some of the turnover on the offensive line.
So getting those guys, you know, not having a college
team either, pursue them for head coaching jobs.
Speaker 4 (01:21:35):
Or you know, throw arraise at them.
Speaker 14 (01:21:37):
Look at Ohio State and Jim Knowles as an example, right,
so those things certainly are possible.
Speaker 4 (01:21:42):
And then you go down with the position coaches.
Speaker 14 (01:21:44):
Right, AJ Millerley to shard choice, Chris Jackson, Kenny Baker,
Johnny Nansen to bring all those guys back.
Speaker 4 (01:21:51):
I think is huge.
Speaker 14 (01:21:52):
So yeah, it gives me opportunity to do a chief
plug that article. Excuse me, go check it out on
Horn's twenty four to seven dot com. But especially in
today's coding landscape camp to be able to not only
financially compensate those guys, but keep that continuity for your players,
it's huge, and I don't think it gets talked about enough.
Speaker 4 (01:22:08):
Quite Frankly, you mentioned Jim Knowles, the former Ohio State
defensive coordinator. Texas opens a twenty five season against Owaho
State August thirtieth, long ways away, but we're getting closer
by each second to Ohio State team Eric that now
will be without We'll have rather a different defensive coordinator,
a different offensive coordinator because Chipchelly has gone to the NFL. Well,
(01:22:30):
Howard will be gone. Their top two running backs, Travon
Henderson and Quinn Shawn Judkins will be in the NFL,
losing a Mecca Abuka, one of their all time leading
receivers in program history, pretty much a brand new offensive line,
pretty much a brand new defensive line. Gonna return obviously
Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs. But looking at the twenty
(01:22:50):
twenty five matchup, Eric and of course Texas losing a
lot of key players as well, it kind of resembles
Michigan from this year, a team that will be rebuilding.
Speaker 6 (01:23:02):
Cam.
Speaker 4 (01:23:02):
I don't think you can, you know, dispute that.
Speaker 14 (01:23:05):
And when you take a look at Ohio State and
some of their roster turnover, and as you talked about
the coaching turnover as well, I mean, listen, we still have,
you know, two hundred and some of the days. I
think we're still over two hundred days until August thirtieth.
In that matchup, and you go to the Horseshoe, and
like you said, it's a lot of similarities to the
Michigan team right talked about, Oh, you can't discount going
(01:23:26):
to the Big House and being in front of one
hundred thousand and so on and so forth, Right, I
think the same can be said about this matchup. In Texas,
of course, with the first time full time starting quarterback
in Arch Manning. And we'll see how some of the
things play out in the offseason. The thing that I'm
keeping my eye on is CJ. Baxter's recovery from that
knee injury. Can he be, you know, not just a
complimentary piece, but a focal point of this offense. One
(01:23:50):
year removed from that knee injury and still plenty of
things to work out. Most notably, I think you take
a look at receiver, you take a look at tight end.
The offensive live right, lost a lot of guys, whether
it's early departure over the NFL Draft or graduation. Need
to replace four guys for new starters. So we'll see
how that fears. But that's where to kind of tie
everything back together. I think the coaching continuity for Texas
(01:24:12):
is so key, right because of the fact that you
have all of your assistants coming back. You get that
ability to really develop talent. And I'm big on this camp.
I think, especially when it comes to offensive line and quarterback,
but specificit with offensive line, it's hard. You can't portal
an offensive line. Look no further than Oklahoma, who tried
to do it last year, right, That's not a cheap shot.
(01:24:34):
The Sooners, their offensive line plate just wasn't good because
they tried to bring in three and four guys from
the portal. We've had multiple offensive line coaches. That's a
technique position, that's a confidence position, and when you have
multiple voices who kind of taught you how to do something,
it's hard to have instant success in one year. So
I think what bodes well for Texas is bringing back
the assistance they had so that they can continue to
(01:24:56):
development with clearly a talented roster.
Speaker 4 (01:24:59):
Talking with A Henry from Horns two four to seven.
Follow him on Twitter at Eric C Henry Underscore. Okay,
real quick, you mentioned Arch Manning. My social media feeds
have just been filled with all of the press arch
Manning has been doing with his new Red Bull deal.
Of course, sat down with Marty Smith from ESPN. I
think he did a thing with Complex Sports, maybe more.
(01:25:20):
I have not seen anything like this before. I mean,
the season ended less than a month ago and it's
already kind of been declared that arch Manning is the
face of college football and he seems like a very
mature kid. I'm not sure how many people could handle
the spotlight he's going to be in and what he's
already been through. But we're already seeing the beginning of
(01:25:42):
the arch Manning error at Texas. The cars has already
began on the football field. But it does seem like
even Texas kind of pushing him to be the face
of Texas and college football going forward.
Speaker 14 (01:25:53):
Two things come to mind when you talk about kind
of the media blitz right that arch Manning is doing.
First off, was stated by his family right that they
wouldn't take any you know, nil deals outside of course,
the Panini training card deal, which of course he donated
the proceeds. So I believe Shriners if members break donated
for good cause. I don't want to misattribute where the
donation went to. But two things come to mind. One,
(01:26:17):
as a local reporter, I think the arch Manning media
availability is probably going to be dialed back a little
bit come football season. Right, They're gonna let Arch kind
of get it out of a system. Of course, he'll
do the regular you know, quarterback appearances that of course,
you know Quinn yours and others do. But I think
it's smart on Steve Sarkisian and in Texas's part to say, hey,
you know, get all this out of the way now, right,
(01:26:38):
you guys want to talk to Arch Manning.
Speaker 4 (01:26:39):
We're still five six months away from the football season.
Speaker 14 (01:26:41):
Let's get it out now, so you don't have at
least the national interest, right and nothing. I shouldn't say
that that's going to ever die down. You know, that's
just probably only increase when he touches the field. Right,
but let's se in terms of interview requests, kind of
get that out of the way now. The second thing
you talk about it, right, I'll never forget cam the
Sugar Bowl last year, right, you have the open media
(01:27:03):
availability and for the audience being I know how this works.
Speaker 4 (01:27:06):
They did it there in the super Dome.
Speaker 14 (01:27:08):
You know, you got one hundred and twenty yards to cover,
and I just remember seeing all of the starters who
had their own table, and you know, key assistants and
Ceve Sarcasian had their own table, but everyone else was
kind of just left to the side, right because they
weren't quote unquote essential, except for Arch Manning, who stepped
away from his teammates and sat on the visiting bench.
Speaker 4 (01:27:29):
And there was a crowd.
Speaker 14 (01:27:30):
I'm sure you can google this picture of maybe fifty
sixty media members all huddling this eighteen nineteen year old kid,
and to your point, camp you talk about how well
adjusted he is. I can't think of very many eighteen
nineteen year olds who could sit there and say, all right, shoot.
Speaker 4 (01:27:44):
Have at it, you know what I mean, like camp
out about you.
Speaker 14 (01:27:46):
But I would have trusted myself at eighteen or nineteen
years old, repeppered with all of those questions and be
confident that hey, he's okay, he can handle it.
Speaker 4 (01:27:54):
But I think that comes with being a manning no doubt.
Let's end with this texts basketball at thirty one point
fire over LSU. On one hand, Eric, I thought that
second half some of the best basketball we've seen all
season from the team. One turnover the game at the
very end of the game, moved the ball very well,
season high performances from Kayden Shedrick in Tremond Mark. On
the other hand, it was a one win conference team
(01:28:16):
in LSU. What'd you make from that game? And what
do you think about Texas going forward as they near
five hundred play and have two winnable games up this week.
What did I make of the game?
Speaker 14 (01:28:27):
Well, two things can be true, right, It doesn't have
to be all one thing or all the other things.
Speaker 4 (01:28:31):
So two things can be true. One LSU clearly are
struggling team.
Speaker 14 (01:28:35):
Matt McMahon that, I don't know, you want to call
it a rebuild, but they're struggling right with one and six,
one and seven now in conference play. The other thing
that can be true is Texas played an excellent second half.
I would say they played a solid first half. Would
have liked them to have closed the first half a
little bit better, especially with some of the struggles they
had against Ole Miss and they've had earlier this year.
(01:28:55):
But the defensive intensity, I mean tremon Mark limiting Cam
Carter that I think you'll had six points if memory
serves me correct in that game. Yeah, so you limited
one of the top scores in the SEC, a guy
who entered the game averaging eighteen points. And then also
just the emergence of some guys Cam, I mean, you're
with this team all year. I think this stretch of
games serves to be real crucial, not just because you're
(01:29:18):
facing Arkansas which has been struggling, although they certainly rattle
off a huge win for their former coach John Cala
Perry in Kentucky, and then you're facing Vanderbilt, a team
that's been up and down.
Speaker 4 (01:29:28):
Now Blue still rank n we're twenty five.
Speaker 14 (01:29:31):
But I think it's a crucial stretch because Devon Pryor
playing really good basketball nine points, six boards, cam if
he can emerge and just give you additional death be
an additional guy on this roster, especially a while Kendall
Weaver is hurt. But b if Kendall Weaver, I guess
it's if Slash when he does return. If you can
get that additional deaf to really athletic guys who can
(01:29:53):
guard the perimeter and make plays, I would say look
out for this Texas team. I think it was really
premature for some of the people who kind of wrote
them off. Yes, some of the early SEC games, the
losses were a little ugly. I should see litt dat.
You know, some of them were ugly, don't get me wrong.
But I think the way this team is developing, you
know the continuity of this roster that brought in so
many new guys and guys who had to figure out
(01:30:14):
their roles because you had guys who were primary scores
at their previous school. If this thing can kind of
start gelling and they can build some additional death. I'd
say look out for the Long Horns to be a
team that can finish top six in the SEC and
we'll see what, you know, kind of comes of that
in the future should they be able to keep that
momentum going.
Speaker 4 (01:30:30):
He is Eric Henry from Horns two four seven. Check
out his work at Horns two four seven dot com
and follow him on Twitter at Eric c Henry Underscore.
Eric my man, good seeing it. I hope to see
you Wednesday night at the Mood. Absolutely can appreciate you
having on my man all right, Eric Henry to his
point about the early season schedule, we textas one of
five teams to face the number one and number two
(01:30:52):
team back to back ever ever inca history, and that
happened with a second week of conference plays. So yeah,
I think everyone knew that the schedule was front loaded.
Look how this team would respond in February, in March,
and a great opportunity this week to pick up two wins.
But we will see more than come here on the
Craigway Show, We're gonna go out to the west to
(01:31:14):
Pebble Beach and recap the first signature event, sorry, second
believe signature event of the twenty twenty five season. Roy
McElroy gets to win. How did a few Longhorns perform
in their PJ Tour season debuts up next year? On
Monday edition of The Craigway Show.
