Speaker 1 (00:00):
If you've ever seen the movie Stripes with Bill Murray,
there's a scene where the drill instructor, the old krusty
Warren Oates, gets blown off a tower and he's gone
for a while, and they complete their basic training on
their own, and then he walks back in which none
of them expected to see. And you hear Bill Murray say,

(00:22):
it is a live It's kind of how I feel
being back in the studio today. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome
to the program here on AM thirteen under the Zone.
My name is Craig Way. I am back in the
studio today. Feels good to be back in the studio.
The producer of the program, Cameron Parker, is on his

(00:43):
way as we speak to Greenville, South Carolina. In fact,
I think he's in the Nashville International Airport connecting flights,
changing planes to get to Greenville. He'll join the Texas
women's basketball team there and he'll call the game tomorrow

(01:04):
at five o'clock as Texas will take on the winner
of the game between the seven seed and the ten
seed Ole Miss and Mississippi State, and he'll he'll have
the call of that with Kathy Arson tomorrow at the
Long words advance, he'll have the call of the Saturday
Summerfinal game for Texas, and if they advances the championship,
I'll be there on Sunday to join him in Kathy

(01:25):
to call that one. But Cam is out. That means,
of course, the producer of the program is none other
than the guy I referred to as the sixth Man.
He's Andrew Zimmer and when he does it by himself,
we like to say it's the zimal hours. But today
he's just at the bridge in the captain's chair making
sure that everything goes smoothly, and it's gone smoothly the

(01:47):
past couple of days.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
How are you doing today's m I'm doing great, Craig.
I'm glad that you're both feet on the ground ready
to do a show today. This is exciting in the studio.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Yeah, it's it's good to be It's been a so
I'm glad to be back.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
And I think the people who have listened to the.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Programs that I've done over the years, the you know,
whether it was here the first time when I was
here for nineteen years, and then when I was across
town for six and a half years, and then back
here over almost two years back here. It's been almost
two years back here in the iHeart Family and back
at a thirteen.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Under the Zone.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
During all of those years, I think fans, we've got
a lot of loyal listeners. They get what this time
of year delivers. They get what it delivers to them
as fans, and they get what it challenges me as
a broadcaster to do, especially as the play by play
voice of the University of Texas, because as you know, I,

(02:50):
you know, broadcast the football games, the men's basketball games,
the women's basketball games when there's not a conflict, and
the baseball games, and so it means especially there's two
times a year, and people who have heard this program
have heard me refer to them, there's two times a
year that I refer to as the overlaps. One starts

(03:12):
about around the tenth of November or so until now
because of the extended college football playoff, it could go
as late as early January. There's that, and it overlaps
football with men's and women's college basketball. The one that's
even a little more maniacal and a little crazy starts
like Valentine's Weekend last month, and it'll run all the

(03:35):
way probably till the end of March, maybe even in
early April if the Texas women make a final four
run or something like that happens. So there's almost two
months of that where there's a lot happening, and I'm
jumping between airports and commercial flights and charter flights and
rental cars and you know, things like that, and getting

(03:57):
to where I need to be to call a game.
So that's what happens this time of year. So for that,
Andrew Zimmel, I am grateful for your service as the
sixth man who can step in and carry the program
as you will tomorrow when I head out to the
ballpark to do ufc Uish falk Field's presentation of Long

(04:19):
Worn Baseball as Texas will open the series against Santa Clara.
I will check in with you from the ballpark. But
I appreciate you. Have you had fun these past.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Several days, Oh, a ton of fun. I had a
lot of fun yesterday because we had so much audio
from Vick Schaeffer and Madison Booker and that was great stuff.
And I love Madison Booker. I think that she is
maybe my favorite athlete right now. On the forty Acres Craig.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
She's well be high praise, but certainly well founded given
the fact that she's the SEC Player of the Year,
she was the Freshman the Year last year, she's a
Cheryl Miller Award finalist again, and she's the scoringly I
would submit to you that while she is the machine

(05:05):
that makes this Texas women's team go, the heart and
soul of it is going to be Rory Harmon with
what she does and what she has come through. And
then you have the other pieces that makes such a
big difference, Shay Holly, who's really kind of the brains
of the operation, and Taylor Jones who's kind of the
might and the muscle inside, along with Kyla Oldacre, and

(05:27):
then they've got the depth that they have. That's why
this is a serious final for a contender. Now, in
order to continue to be a final four contender, you
have to have a good seed in the NCAA Tournament,
and a favorable draw helps that kind of stuff, and

(05:49):
your team has to be playing well. So I think
all of that stuff will be out there in front
of Texas. Right now, they're the number one ranked team
in the country the polls. That's not the NCAA Tournament
selection thingam. However, we saw a week ago last Thursday,
the second early reveal for the NCAA Tournament selection Committee,

(06:10):
and they had moved Texas up to the number two
on the seed line. Charlie Cream, the bracketologist for ESPN,
then after UCLA lost that night to USC moved Texas
into the one slot.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
He still has them in the one slot. We'll see.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
The main thing I think for is Texas women's team
has to continue to play at a high level. They'd
love to win the SEC championship, the tournament championship. If
already claimed their share of the regular season title, they
would love to win to win that tournament title as well.
But I do think if they win a game, especially

(06:50):
if they win two, but winning at least one should
probably cement their status as a one seed. And if
they get to the final, I think it's cements their
status as one.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Getting to bracket its way to Birmingham.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
We've explained this before that there are two regional Sweet
sixteen slash Elite eight sites in women's basketball.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
They run two.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
At each regional site. So the two regional sites this
year are Spokane in Birmingham, and since Texas has been
up to the Pacific Northwest the past three of the
past four years. They'd love to have an opportunity to
play closer to home, and they would like to be
in Birmingham. I think they're in really good shape to
do that. I think I'll win tomorrow of the old
miss Mississippi State winner probably cements it. It's certainly I

(07:36):
think cements them as the number one seed if they win.
If they are to win a semi final, which could
be against LSU on Saturday, I think it probably would
lock them into being in Birmingham. And if they win
the whole thing, I think they're locked into being the
number one overall seed.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
I think they could have all that.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
We'll see just to update you on the women's tournament,
and then we're going to tell you what else we've
got coming on the program today. They are in the
second round. There's already been a final this morning. There's
already been a lower seed advance. Actually it's higher seed,
excuse me. Vanderbilt, the eight seed beat the nine seed
Tennessee eighty four to seventy six. Vandermilt now has to

(08:14):
take on South Carolina. That would be tomorrow at eleven o'clock.
In the morning our time, and the game that has
followed that one is going on right now between the
five seed Oklahoma and the twelve seed Georgia, and there's
about seven and a half minutes to go in that game,
and right now Oklahoma leeds A by fifteen points. They

(08:34):
are at fifty five to forty, so seeds going to
form so far winter That game will play at one
point thirty tomorrow afternoon against the number four seed Kentucky.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Then you get to the bottom of the bracket.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Mississippi plays Mississippi State, oh miss against Mississippi State.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
That'll be this afternoon at five o'clock.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
The winner of that game we'll play Texas tomorrow at
five union here on one of three point.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
One FM, Austin's EIGHTES station.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
And then the night cap tomorrow night will be the
sixth seed Alabama against eleven seed Florida and the winner
of that will get LSU at seven point thirty tomorrow night.
So that gets you caught up on the SEC women's tournament.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
We'll keep you updated on that. Now.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
With regard to the men's tournament, we talked quite a
bit about this. The Longhorn men did themselves a great
Service helped themselves out tremendously by virtue of that win
at twenty fifth rank Mississippi State on Tuesday night, winning
it in overtime eighty seven eighty two.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
It does not have them in the NCAA Tournament field yet.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
In fact, most bracketologists, including Joe Lenardi, who's kind of
the chief among all of this, still have Texas on
that line of first four out. Doesn't mean they won't
get in, but it means they go from one must
win game to another. I would submit to you Saturday night,
Senior Night at home against Oklahoma, another bubble team on
the outside trying to play its way into the field.

(10:01):
That's Saturday night at seven o'clock, and Texas is in
the situation of needing to win that game.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
And even then I.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
Don't know that they would be in unless there were
all kinds of losses from other bubble teams. It would
probably take a win Saturday and a win next week,
at least in their first game at the SEC Tournament,
which looks like it's going to be against Georgia, and
it looks like it'll be at two thirty in the
afternoon next Wednesday afternoon. Of course, you would hear that

(10:32):
right here on thirteen under the zone. It'd be next
Wednesday afternoon. They're almost certainly locked into that two thirty
time slot as either the twelve seed or the thirteen seed.
It's not mathematically for sure, because if they were to
lose local whomens some other things happened, they could wind
up actually as the fourteen.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
They'd take other tie breaks.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
But if they win, they're definitely in that twelve versus
thirteen matchup next Wednesday afternoon at two thirty. And I
think a win that game, if they win Saturday, win
that game might be enough to get them into the field.
Might be depends on what else is going on. And
at this time of year. You know how this works
if you are a fan of college basketball and a
fan of March Madness, and a fan of what's called

(11:14):
Championship Week throughout all of next week. It actually really
began this week. And there are, by the way, men's
not just women's. There are men's Division one conference tournaments
going on right now that will help shape the field
of sixty eight. Some of the mid major and smaller
conferences have already started their tournaments so they can get

(11:35):
their championship games on national television on the ESPN. But
you want chalk to happen if you're a team in
that kind of bubble situation as the Longhorns are, So
they got to handle their business and then they may
need a little bit of help as well. By the way,
tonight is our final seasonal edition of Longhorn Weekly with

(11:57):
Rodney Terry from Pluckers the West Campus. Last chance of
the season to come out and visit with RT. Submit questions,
you have question cards, you have questions for the coach,
and as always, we have a special guest tonight, Arthur Kluma.
As you know, Art is getting ready to play his
final home game as a Texas Longhorn the Senior and

(12:20):
he will join us tonight at Pluckers the West Campus
locations at six o'clock. You'll hear it live here on
thirteen under the Zone. So if you can come on
out and enjoy some great wings and great conversation talking
long worn basketball headed into this final week of the
regular season. All right, a couple other things coming up
after this break. You're talking about a shift. We're talking

(12:43):
Texas Men's tennis, the outstanding men's tennis program with head
coach Bruce Burg. They are hosting Mississippi State tonight and
Bruce is nice enough to take a few minutes to visit.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
With us to preview that.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
They also have Auburn coming in on Saturday, so we'll
do that. We have inconceivable later on this hour, in
the three o'clock hour, we're going to hear from Jim
Schlosnagle some sound from the long WRN baseball head coach,
whose team is now won ten in a row and
getting ready to open their final non conference weekend series
before they start conference play with Santa Clara coming into town,

(13:16):
the Broncos from the West Coast Conference. That's tomorrow evening
at six thirty Saturday at two o'clock, Sunday at one o'clock,
and you'll hear all three games here on the zone.
And so we'll hear from Jim Schlosnagel coming up next
hour and in the four o'clock hour.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
Among other things that we'll do.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Gene Watson from Chicago White Sox front office joins us
we're getting closer to the start of baseball's regular season.
We're actually only about twelve days away.

Speaker 3 (13:49):
From an actually beginning.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
It'll begin in Japan with the Cubs and Dodgers playing,
but that'll be the first series. But we're three weeks
out really from the start of the Major League Baseball season,
so Gino will join us in the four o'clock hour
to get us updated on them on that. All right,
up next, we visit with Bruce Burg, Texas men's tennis coach,
when we continue right here on thirteen under the zone
to twenty here on this Thursday afternoon.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
I'm glad to have you with us on the program.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
We said there was an awful lot to discuss with
the University of Texas athletics, both the men's and women's
basketball teams, Baseball, softball going really well, and he she
had noticed long worn men's tennis has ranked fourth in
the country and they have a big SEC match tonight
against Mississippi State and then Auburn coming in on Saturday.

(14:37):
Very pleased to be joined on the hotline by our
good friend the head coach of Texas men's tennis, Bruce Burg. Bruce,
I appreciate you taking the time on the match day.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
How are you?

Speaker 1 (14:52):
And we might have lost him there, Andrew could we'll
see if we can bring Bruce back can on this
uh to do this the the long worn tennis team
by the way, uh is is Bruce?

Speaker 3 (15:07):
You back with us now?

Speaker 4 (15:11):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (15:12):
Okay, all right, well we'll see if we can uh
we can get him back on board was in the meantime.
What I can tell you about. Uh, we'll try one
more time. Hey, Bruce, she with us?

Speaker 3 (15:21):
Now?

Speaker 1 (15:26):
Hello, Bruce, she with us? Okay, Uh, he might not
be able to hear us Andrews. We'll we'll try to
see if we can uh uh make that work. I
know we had a little bit of issue that when
I when I was calling in yesterday.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
Uh, but we'll see if we can get that all together.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
In the meantime, what we were saying about Texas men's tennis, Uh,
they are uh six and one since the last time
we visited with Bruce. That one loss was to Wake
Forrest in the summifinals of the i T eight indoors
uh and that was four three and Wake went on
to win the championship. They're currently the number one ranked
team in the country. But Texas has worked really well

(16:03):
and they have wins against number one at the time
TCU fourteenth ranked Texas A and M. That was a
non conference match at the ITA Indoors, number five Virginia
and they're three and oh in the SEC with wins
over Vanderbilt and ole Miss at home and Florida on
the road. All right, let's see if we can drive
one more time. Hey, Bruce, you able to hear us?

Speaker 3 (16:23):
Now?

Speaker 5 (16:25):
I can?

Speaker 3 (16:26):
I can?

Speaker 5 (16:26):
No one there to keep us apart.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
All right, Well, I appreciate you take you the time
on the match day. Let me get your let me
get your thoughts on the way things have been going,
because I know that you have to be pleased since
the last time we visited. Your group is six and one.
That one losses to Wake Forest, a pretty good team.
They're number one, and that was in that semifinals with

(16:49):
the ITA Indoors. But I was just recapping how things
had gone with wins over TCU, Texas A and M
fifth rank Virginia three and o in the SEC. Now
and then we always like to say everybody's first foray
from the University of Texas into the SEC. And you're
off to a good start with the wins over Vanderbilt
and Ole Miss at home and Florida on the road.
So how would you characterize how your club is playing

(17:11):
right now.

Speaker 6 (17:13):
Yeah. Now, I've been really happy with the results, but
especially with the way the guys are out there striving
to get better every day and taking ownership in the team.
And it's really accept for several of them stepping up
his leaders, which is kind of interesting because we had
so much turnover from last year's team that it's really
nice to see that the culture is staying strong and

(17:36):
we're striving to be the best by the end of
the year.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
Well, you've got some guys who have some outstanding dual
match records in their singles. I look at Tim melugu
Is nine and one, Sebastian Gorney's niney four, nine and four, and.

Speaker 3 (17:51):
Then Pierre Eves.

Speaker 1 (17:53):
Bailey really seems to have found his game both physically
and mentally.

Speaker 3 (17:57):
He's ten and oer right now.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
Did you have a good few about him going into
those dual match records this season?

Speaker 6 (18:05):
I did, mostly because of the way he seems to
have matured. Not that he was an imagery kid before,
but you know, he would be very much in a
victim sometimes of the way things were going, you know,
whether he was healthy or not healthy.

Speaker 5 (18:22):
He thinks, you know, if.

Speaker 6 (18:23):
He lost the last match or won.

Speaker 5 (18:25):
The last match.

Speaker 6 (18:26):
Sometimes he would be very much at the mercy of
his circumstances and that would affect his mental game. And
he's just seemed to come into his own with respect
to his maturity and prepares very well for each match,
and it's very hard to rattle him. And he's been healthy,
So with that in mind, he's got you know, he's

(18:46):
proven over the years that he can beat a lot
of great players. So yeah, it doesn't shock be given
the way I saw his mentality evolve over the fall.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
Well, you also have had some veterans show how good
they can be. Jonah braswell, we've talked about before, and
he's eight and two, and Timo I mentioned and Sebastian
I got to ask you about your freshman Oliver. It's
it's owed your car, isn't it? From Estonia? And he's
off to an eight.

Speaker 5 (19:14):
That's right.

Speaker 6 (19:15):
Yeah, No, he's been great, and it's the nice thing
about him is, you know, it's tough.

Speaker 7 (19:19):
To come in in January and be thrust right.

Speaker 6 (19:21):
Away into the dual matches. You're playing dual matches within
a week from being on campus. It's not always an
easy thing to do, especially for those guys who are
coming from a different country and culture. But it's been
fun because we've really seen him improving virtually week by
week and almost every time he steps on the court,
and he's got a he's a big guy with a

(19:41):
big game, and he's sitting seamlessly with the team.

Speaker 5 (19:45):
So yeah, it's been a lot of fun.

Speaker 6 (19:46):
I think he's going to be, no doubt, a star
and an upper lineup player during his career here.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
Yeah, you've got a couple of guys splitting time at
single Sebastian Eerics in his seven and three Lucas Brown
a seven to one.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
How's that. It looks like it's worked out well so far.

Speaker 8 (20:02):
So far.

Speaker 7 (20:03):
Yeah, you know, sometimes the issue.

Speaker 6 (20:05):
About which of them is going to play takes care
of itself because maybe somebody is a little banged up,
either one of them or somebody else. And we're fortunate
to have at least seven guys that we feel really
comfortable with being out there. My goal for each of
them is to never have just like it was last
year for Lucas. I never want them to go more
than a week without competing. I still don't know which

(20:25):
one is, you know, the right one to be out there.
So in many, many days they'll both been playing. Some
days just wonderful movie playing, but they've they've had a
really good mentality about it.

Speaker 5 (20:36):
Or super supportive of each other.

Speaker 6 (20:38):
So yeah, So Bastan Erickson is a really good player also,
and he's he's done very well for us, and he
didn't have a good match the last time you played,
but that's just one day. And Lucas is just a
fiery kid and a fighter, and he's you know, really
to me, he epitomizes everything it means to be a
Texas Longhorn.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
You have been able to get two of the three
doubles points in the SEC matches.

Speaker 3 (21:02):
Do you like what you have there?

Speaker 1 (21:04):
Are you still looking for an uptick in terms of
the double side of things?

Speaker 6 (21:09):
Yeah, I mean we've been winning most of the double points.
We've probably lost one, you know.

Speaker 7 (21:16):
For we've probably lost We've probably.

Speaker 6 (21:20):
Got one or two less wins and doubles points than
we do wins in dual match records, and.

Speaker 7 (21:24):
So yeah, no, we're not quite satisfied with it.

Speaker 5 (21:28):
We definitely think we.

Speaker 6 (21:29):
Have the skills and the ability, but we're still not
thrilled with the consistency of the level of our execution.
So tonight it's going to be a little different. We're
changing the lineup a little bit again. This time it's not,
you know, it's not so much a search for some
magic chemistry that's going to be the answer. I think
sometimes that's pivot, but I think more important is just

(21:50):
the consistency of our execution and understanding about how physical
and intense you need to be in what you know,
in what really is a sprint for about thirty minutes
of doubles play. So tonight we're going to have, most
likely we're going to have Oliver and Pierre playing together
at number one, and Lucas and Timo at two, and

(22:11):
most likely Sebastian Korsny with either Jonah or Eric Sin
at three.

Speaker 5 (22:16):
So it's a little bit different.

Speaker 6 (22:18):
My goal is for after this weekend to be kind
of set and just have our three teams and just.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
Go with them for the rest of the season. That's
what we look to do.

Speaker 1 (22:25):
Texas Tennis men's head coach Bruce Burger joining us here
on thirteen under the Zone. Let me get your thoughts
in Mississippi State looks like they're off to a really
good start. Twelve and two, two and one in the conference.
What kind of challenge does the do the Bulldogs present
for you tonight?

Speaker 9 (22:39):
Yeah, they're good.

Speaker 6 (22:40):
I mean, they're definitely They're definitely one of the teams
that we think is going to be the stiffest competition
for us in the SEC. There's no doubt that most
coaches would agree that they're a top three SEC team
and with one of the tea programs that has a
chance to compete for the championships with a lot of

(23:01):
respect for their coaches.

Speaker 5 (23:02):
And the consistency.

Speaker 6 (23:04):
In the consistency with which they compete every match, it's
been a high level program for a while. They're really
good at the top of the lineup, and they're really.

Speaker 5 (23:12):
Good in doubles.

Speaker 6 (23:14):
And I think we're gonna have to be on our
best mental, mental game tonight.

Speaker 5 (23:18):
To have a good shot.

Speaker 3 (23:20):
And then you got to turn around.

Speaker 1 (23:21):
You got Auburn coming in on Saturday, and it's it's
not exactly that I mean, they're they're ranked thirty seconds,
so it's not exactly like you're you're taking on chop
liver there too. It looks like it's a good, uh
front end, back end series of challenge this.

Speaker 6 (23:33):
Weekend sure, sure, I mean really, all the SEC teams
are good, but you know, Auburn's has definitely got a
good got a good program, so we have respect for
them too. And we just you know, we just came
back from Florida. We only had two days of practice here,
but we're ready and Mississippi State's gonna be tough. Like
you said, we turn it around and play Auburn, and
then two days later after that we're on the road

(23:56):
back to TCU for our last non conference match against
against TCU again, so we got a lot coming out.

Speaker 1 (24:04):
Yeah, indeed, all right, again, it's tonight at six o'clock.
Why not head over to the Texas Tennis Center to
see what should be a splendid match tonight with Mississippi
State and then Saturday afternoon at one o'clock against Auburn. Bruce,
it's always a great deal of pleasure to visit with you.
I appreciate you taking the time and best of luck
tonight and over the weekend.

Speaker 5 (24:24):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (24:25):
Thanks for having me on you bet.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
All right, that's Bruce Park, Texas men's tennis head coach,
coming up. Will bring you today's edition of Inconceivable and
we continue on thirteen under the zone.

Speaker 10 (24:37):
Inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable.

Speaker 3 (24:42):
Us in that far. I don't think I miss? What
do you think of miss?

Speaker 1 (24:47):
Here's what inconceivable means on a Thursday afternoon, as we
roll through it, whenever possible, whenever possible, we like to
bring you out aplickable a fast food update. Andrew Zimmil
strikes me as the kind of guy who occasionally dabbles
in the fast food arts?

Speaker 3 (25:07):
Am I correct on that? Zim?

Speaker 2 (25:09):
You caught me craig I ate in and out today?

Speaker 3 (25:13):
Did you really? Okay?

Speaker 5 (25:16):
Lunch?

Speaker 3 (25:17):
Okay? Where do you stand with Chick fil A?

Speaker 2 (25:21):
You know, I'm just getting back into it. I'm a fan.
I got a gift card over Christmas.

Speaker 3 (25:26):
Well that's good, okay, I should let you know that.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
In addition to the regular offerings on the menu, which include,
you know, the regular grilled or the original chicken sandmich,
all that stuff, they're bringing back a couple of things.
First of all, the Smokehouse barbecue bacon sandwich.

Speaker 3 (25:48):
There's that. Then they've got.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
One, two, three, four new Spring drinks. Tell me if
any of these strike your fans. There's a pineapple dragon
fruit frosted lemonade.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
That sounds like a lot.

Speaker 1 (26:07):
There's just a regular pineapple dragonfruit lemon lemonade, a pineapple
dragon fruit iced tea, and a pineapple dragon fruit sunjoy.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
Any of that hold any interest for you?

Speaker 1 (26:21):
There?

Speaker 2 (26:22):
The iced tea catches my attention. But the problem is
that's a mouthful. If I'm trying to do that at
the drive through.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
That's a good point.

Speaker 1 (26:30):
Let me have that pineapple dragon fruit frosted lemonade. You
know that that might take a little time even just
to get it out of your mouth. Okay, while we're
on the subject of junk food. When these last couple
of days, and this really even goes back to late
last week because our man CB sent this story to
me and of course hadn't been in.

Speaker 3 (26:49):
To be able to do this. Did you do the Cheeto.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
Story the U went up for a major sale?

Speaker 3 (26:57):
Yeah? Yesterday? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (26:59):
Okay, yeah, So did you get did you get the
story in and with the yeah? Yeah, the Pokemon it's
a cheeto. I guess what a hot cheetah? Right, a
flaming hot cheeto in the shape of the Pokemon charizard.

Speaker 3 (27:14):
Were you were you.

Speaker 1 (27:15):
Into the whole Pokemon thing when you were younger, because
you would kind of fall into the age group.

Speaker 2 (27:21):
Yeah, so it was really popular when I was a kid.
I collected the cards, I went back to my parents'
house threw them all the way.

Speaker 3 (27:28):
Oh that's not good.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
Okay, my two oldest had him for a while anyway.
So the Cheeto that was shaped like the Pokemon charizard
was sold at auction for eighty seven forty bucks. Just
don't drop it on the floor and have your dog
eat it or something like that. I guess it would
be just under plastic or whatever, but that it's.

Speaker 3 (27:51):
Weird kind of looking anyway, And I'm not in the flaming.

Speaker 1 (27:53):
Hot cheetah, so I'd probably pass on it, but not
that i'd be interested in eating it. But if it
could fetch that kind of money, it might be interesting.
We'll see, all right, I've got a couple of sports
related things for you. First of all, did you do
the story? And the only reason I put this in

(28:14):
inconceivable is because of the solution. Have you done the
story about Kevin Durant and Booing fans the fans of Boo?

Speaker 3 (28:24):
Have you done that story? No, I didn't see that.
One didn't see that one.

Speaker 1 (28:26):
Yeah, it's only come out in the last twenty hours,
so now that I look at it, Okay. So the
Suns beat the Clippers last night. Now it was only
their fourth win in their last fifteen games. As we know,
Phoenix has been struggling. The Footprint Center is where they play,

(28:47):
and the fans there used to be called talking stick
resortive as I remembered Arena, but it's the Footprint Center
there in Phoenix. Booed the team early on and they
were way down in the game. They came back and
Kat had a lot to do with it, and they
had a strong fourth quarter and they closed out the game.

(29:08):
So he was aske during the news conference afterwards. What
did he think about and how did he feel about
the fans booing the team at home? And this was
his answer. This sounds like KD threw and through quote.
I always wondered what booing is going to do for
your team. It actually makes no sense. If you really

(29:31):
want to make your voice be heard, just get up
and leave. We'll feel that more than you booing. We
need energy, you know what I'm saying. When we're down twenty,
we need you all to get a little louder and
there and cheer a little louder. Booing has been a
part of the sports culture for the last fifty to
sixty years.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
I think it's about time we put that up.

Speaker 1 (29:49):
You know what I'm saying, Just get up and leave
if you don't like feel like watching this team play
bad basketball, and we would understand, and that would make
us feel even worse seeing y'all getting up and leaving.
So there was a there was a moment when he
was gesturing to the crowd. He said he was trying
to ignite the fans and tell him quote, get your

(30:12):
you know up to provide the team with a spark.
And he said he has nothing but love for the
Sun's fan base. So that learned twenty nine and thirty three.
But how about that idea, you know, if you don't
like what you see, you.

Speaker 2 (30:25):
Can teach a class. You can teach a class, you
see Craig about being a sports fan.

Speaker 1 (30:31):
Yeah, you know, if you don't like a movie, it's
really bad. You know, you can get up and walk
out of a movie or a concert, right and do that.
And so he said, why not do that if the
team's play about he goes, We'll understand and it'll make
us feel bad too. But if you just sit there
and boo, that isn't doing anybody any good. Maybe it
makes the fan feel better to do it. Maybe it's that,

(30:53):
but it's not making the team feel any better about
that anyway. All Right, So there's one deal. Here's one
that's kind of sports where late you're very young. So
you were very young when the movie came out originally.
In fact, you might not even have been born. What
year were you born, nineteen ninety seven. Yeah, so this

(31:15):
came out before you were born. But you're familiar with
the movie Happy Gilmore, of course, Yeah, yeah, Okay. The
release date has been set for Happy Gilmore two. It's
coming out July twenty fifth, exclusively on Netflix.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
Of course, the sequel.

Speaker 1 (31:36):
Not only will Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Ben Steeler,
Dennis Dugan, and Alan Covert be reprising reprising their roles,
but a handful of professional golfers are going to be
on it as well.

Speaker 3 (31:52):
How about these golfers in this.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
Movie, Keegan Bradley, Bryce and Deshambeau, John Daly, Tony Fenow,
Keith Foller, Brooks, kept Rory macklework Colin Morikawa, Jack Nicholas,
Corey Paven, Xander Schoffley, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan spe Justin Thomas,
the Great, Lee Trevino, and Will's Alatoris. And there's also

(32:14):
going to be other cameos from eminem Reggie Bush, Travis Kelcey,
dan Patrick and Becky Lynch.

Speaker 3 (32:23):
Interested and that.

Speaker 2 (32:25):
Yeah, I'm still hung up on the fact they didn't
call it Happy Gilmore Eagle, you know, for two shots.

Speaker 1 (32:31):
Yeah, yeah, right exactly, so that would make sense. But anyway,
it's it's coming out July twenty fifth, Netflix only. Okay, finally,
you know we're we're US citizens and you know you've
heard of people having dual citizenship, like in a couple
of countries or whatever. There is a tiny island out

(32:53):
the South Pacific that's willing to sell citizenship to you.
You don't have to go through a long waiting process
and this and this. It's Nauru, which is an island nation.
It's only eight square miles in the Southwest Pacific Ocean,
but you can become a citizen of it for one

(33:14):
hundred and five thousand dollars. That's all one hundred five
thousand dollars the reason why they're doing it. It has
a golden passport initiative, so to speak. They're trying to
raise money to fun climate action. They're facing an existential
threat from rising sea levels, storm surges, and coastal erosion.
So they're thinking that if we don't do something, we're

(33:38):
going to wash away.

Speaker 3 (33:39):
So they're trying to get it done.

Speaker 1 (33:41):
And you can be a citizen of the Sinking Island
Nation for a mere one hundred five thousand dollars. All right,
So there's your inconceivable for today. When we pack to
wrap by power number one on thirteen under the zone.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
And we're back again. There we are Forrior number two
here on the program.

Speaker 1 (34:02):
Have a little technical standard right there at the top
of the hour, Craig Way with you. Andrew Zimmel jumped
right in there to try to make a kick save,
you know, and soccer or hockey there how to go.

Speaker 3 (34:17):
Over those final five minutes there's zim did you you
pull it? Keep it all together, keep it, keep it
between the lines.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
We fumbled through. We did a good promo for the
iHeart radio app.

Speaker 1 (34:28):
Oh nice, okay, all well, folks can definitely hear us
via the iHeartRadio app absolutely, and they can also text
the program as well as a couple of different ways.
That one uses the iHeart Radio app, and that would
be through our talk back feature, So you can do that.

(34:50):
And the way that that works is if you've got
the iHeart Radio app, all you have to do is
do the search on AM thirteen under the zon it
pops up and then there are two buttons. One's a
little white button like in the shape of an arrow.
That's if you just want to listen to the program.
And if you're wanting to contribute, there's a little red

(35:12):
button with a white micro fund in the middle of
you hit that and that is our talk back feature
and that allows you to leave a message fro up
to thirty seconds, so you could do it that way.

Speaker 3 (35:22):
You can do it that way. You can also text the.

Speaker 1 (35:26):
Program, and what you do is you text the word
texas follow by your question or comment to eight one
five three zero, so eight one five three zero Standard
messaging and data rights may apply. So that's that's how
you can text the program there here on AM thirteen

(35:47):
under the design. All right, likely, center's a lot to
get to. We're going to hear coming up in the
next segment from Jim Schlasnigle, the long wornes head baseball coach.
Well from him coming off of the win on Tuesday
night against Texas A and M Corpus Christy that has
run Texas record to ten and one overall, ten consecutive

(36:09):
wins after they had that season opening tenanting loss in
Arlington and Louisville. They've won ten straight since then. So
we'll hear from coach Slash as Schloss and the Longhorns
get ready for the Broncos of Santa Clara who come

(36:29):
in from the West Coast Conference. It's weird there's two
teams from the West Coast Conference coming to within one
hundred miles of each other in Central Texas this weekend.
Have Santa Clara here in town and Loyola Marymount is
playing one hundred miles up to road in Waco against Baylor.
So anyway, both of that is going on there. Okay,

(36:52):
there was a coaching there's been a coaching move made.
Johnny Harris, who was an assistant for Vic Shaefer here
in her first year in Vic's first year of the program,
then got the Auburn job. But Auburn today announced that

(37:16):
it has parted ways with coach Harris. She went fifty
eight and sixty three and four seasons. Last year they
got to the NCAA Tournament, but they went twelve and
eighteen this year, three and three in SEC competition. They
got beat last night by Florida. That was seven straight losses.
They finished in a four way tie for last place

(37:38):
with Missouri, Arkansas and Texas A and M SO. Anyway,
she'd been associated coach for Vic Shaeffer Mississippi State for
eight years from twenty twelve all the way up to
twenty twenty, and then she followed coach Schaefer here to

(37:59):
Texas and was associate head coach's first year here twenty
twenty twenty one before taking over the Auburn program. So
she went ten and eighteen first year. They'd gone five
to nineteen the year before her arrival. Then they went
to sixteen and fifteen or second year, and then went
twenty and twelve twenty twenty two. Twenty twenty three was

(38:22):
her when they went sixteen and fifteen. That was the
first winning season in four years, and then they went
twenty and twelve last year, but fell off this year,
and of course they had Dianna Gaston, who had been
on the Texas team and who had recruited had been
recruited to Texas by Johnny Harris, so she went ahead
and transferre there. She was their leading scorer and she
had a really good year individually, but Auburn not so much.

(38:43):
And so now they made the change their parting ways
with Johnny Harris the head coach there.

Speaker 3 (38:52):
Also.

Speaker 1 (38:53):
I don't know if you heard about this, Andrew. You know,
with all of the difficulty the Dallas Mavericks have had
of late, you know, starting of course with the Luca trade,
and Luka Doncic is faring quite well in Los Angeles,
thank you very much, and so.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
Are the Lakers. They're really on a roll there.

Speaker 1 (39:18):
I was listening to you yesterday after i'd popped on
with you right after it i'd hit the ground back
in Austin late in the afternoon, and you were talking
about the Luca trade, as many have, and how things
have kind of gone south, and how Nico Harrison is
really taking the brunt end, the blunt end of this

(39:42):
and the brunt of the criticism about all of this.
And I have to tell you I'm in agreement with
you because you said. It was their perspective, at least
that's what's being reported pretty much, their perspective, that Luca
wasn't improper shape, that he was injured too easily, that

(40:03):
he was it was he wasn't taken in taking it
seriously enough.

Speaker 3 (40:08):
And I don't think that was the case.

Speaker 1 (40:11):
He Sure he may have gotten worn down a bit
by playing, you know, uh in the summer in Slovenia
and forced Slovenia for their national team, But I didn't
you know, and and and you've heard You've heard me
say this before, Andrew. It's not that his legs and
calves where he's had these calve strains are so out
of shape.

Speaker 3 (40:31):
It's just that he has cankles.

Speaker 9 (40:33):
You know.

Speaker 1 (40:33):
His calves go straight into his ankles, so you call
those cankles.

Speaker 3 (40:38):
So he's got cankles, you know. It's just one long,
big cankle, you know, on each side of his legs.

Speaker 1 (40:44):
So it makes it more susceptible to injury anyway. So
you had that, had the trade Anthony Davis gets hurt
then even his other rash of injuries, most notably unfortunately
Kyrie Irving. You know what I have to say, Uh
not most recent. It's not the most recent because they
just picked up the former long worn Kai Jones signed

(41:06):
an attend day deal and he couldn't go last night
due to a quat strain, so he couldn't play well.
Now after all of that, they're also losing a member
of the coaching staff. Alex Jensen has agreed to a
deal to become the next head coach at the University
of Utah. Utah had fired Craig Smith right near the

(41:31):
end of his fourth season. It was right at the
end of last month, so it was just, you know,
a little over a week ago. They went sixty five
and sixty two without an NCAA tournament appearance. They won
twenty two games last year they played onto the bubble,
but they lost to eight of their last twelve regular
season games.

Speaker 3 (41:47):
They fell out of consideration.

Speaker 1 (41:49):
So they had hired him to replace Larry chris Koviak
and they haven't advanced to the NCAA tournament since twenty sixteen,
and he'd made only four appearances since Rick mcjeri's stepped
down for health reasons back in two way back in
two thousand and four, well he played for Majeri's. Jensen
is a Utah native. He was mister Basketball in the

(42:12):
state of nineteen ninety four. He played in Majeris. He
was the Mountain West Player of the Year in two
thousand and he helped lead the program to four NCAA
tournament appearance.

Speaker 3 (42:19):
He was also a starter on.

Speaker 1 (42:21):
That Utah team that played for the national championship in
ninety eight when they lost to Tubbe Smith, Kentucky team.
So he had been on Jason Kiff's kids' staff. He
was in his second year after a decade as an
assistant with the Utah Jazz, and he has experience coaching
in college. He spent four seasons as an assistant under
mcjerrison Saint Louis before he moved to the professional rank.

Speaker 3 (42:42):
So the hits just keep on coming, ZIM.

Speaker 1 (42:46):
For the Dallas Mavericks, they're losing players dropping left and right,
and now they lose an assistant coach.

Speaker 2 (42:52):
Coaching in college basketball. Craig is like really really hard
right now with nil and transfer portal. So I would say, like, oh,
stay is a professional coach well as you can, except
if it's Dallas Mavericks, then I would say leave as
quickly as possible.

Speaker 1 (43:06):
Run run away, run, run, far away, that kind of thing.
So anyway, it's it's been a tough go for the Mavericks.
And like I said, Kai Jones, the former Longhorn, was
signed to a ten day deal and.

Speaker 3 (43:18):
He couldn't get and they had just signed him.

Speaker 1 (43:20):
In fact, Mark Followell, who's the play by play voice
on Dallas Mavericks Television, had texted me while I was
in Starkville and wanted to know that I have any
other you know, factoids, information, uh, you know, pertinent stuff
that I could share about Kai Jones. And I told
him because they were preparing for Kai to be able

(43:42):
to play. And I texted him back and I said,
you know, here's I said. This is kind of weird
to be able to say this, but there isn't a
great deal. I can tell you about his time here.
Kai was it really nice. Young man came from the Bahamas,
had no family here in the States. But it was

(44:05):
very affable, friendly, warm, pleasant to be around. Was a
willing worker. He would get in the gym and really
work that sort of thing. Two seasons with the Longhorns,
Kai Jones averaged six points and four rebounds per game.

Speaker 3 (44:23):
That's it.

Speaker 1 (44:24):
So when you're drafted nineteenth overall in the NBA draft,
as he was, and you averaged six points and four
boards over two seasons as a freshman and sophomore. Clearly
you're being drafted on length, which he has plenty of,
and potential, which he's had, but.

Speaker 3 (44:43):
It hasn't gone that well f him in the NBA.

Speaker 1 (44:44):
He also lost a very close i think friend of
the family that was like a family member to him,
and that put him in a bad way, and he
had some difficult times in Charlotte. By his own admission,
he said those were some missteps he made, but he'd
kind of tried to turn his turn everything back around
his career and that's what he's trying to do right now.
But then he couldn't get on the floor because of
the quad.

Speaker 3 (45:04):
Strained last night.

Speaker 1 (45:05):
So it's just unfortunate, and the unfortunate things continue to
happen to the Dallas Mavericks, so hopefully they can get
themselves straightened out there. But it's a difficult go right
now for the Mavericks as they have been clinging to
the possibility of being able to get into the playoffs.

(45:29):
But it's getting leaner and leaner right now, all right,
coming up we'll talk to Long ONRM Baseball.

Speaker 3 (45:35):
We'll hear from Jim Schlosnagel, the head coach of.

Speaker 1 (45:38):
The Longhorns, as they prepare for the Broncos of Santa Clara.
This is the final non conference weekend series. And if
it seems like it's come on pretty quick and that
the advent of conference play is quicker than normal, you'd
be exactly right, because they'd play thirty Now with the
expanded SEC thirty conference games, they'll play ten series. So

(46:03):
that means the Longhorns aren't playing everyone in the.

Speaker 3 (46:07):
SEC this year.

Speaker 1 (46:08):
They're not playing the defending national champions from Tennessee. They're
not playing South Carolina, They're not playing Vanderbilt, They're not
playing Alabama, and I think everybody else are playing. They
have Auburn and home. They have Georgia at home, they
have Florida at home. They play at Kentucky, they play
at Missouri, they have Texas A and M at home,

(46:28):
and they open next week in Mississippi State, so they
also have to play at Arkansas and they close at Oklahoma.
So anyway, that's where that is. But SEC conference play
begins next weekend for Texas baseball. On the Road in Starkville,

(46:49):
Mississippi at Mississippi State, and we will hear from head
coach Jim Schlastangle coming up when we continue here on
thirteen under the Zone. Glad to have you with us
on a Thursday afternoon. A reminder six o'clock tonight from

(47:12):
Long Worn Weekly with Rodney Terry from Pluckers the West
Campus location, our final show of this season, and Arthur Caluma,
a long Horn's power forward who had I believe this.

Speaker 3 (47:24):
Sixth double double of the season the other night.

Speaker 1 (47:26):
We'll join us tonight, So at six o'clock Pluckers the
West Campus location here in Austin's twenty two twenty two
Reo Grand and we'll begin promptly at.

Speaker 3 (47:39):
Six o'clock and it's live right here on the Zone.

Speaker 9 (47:43):
All right.

Speaker 1 (47:45):
We shift to baseball when we get to tomorrow because
the Longhorns have one more non conference.

Speaker 3 (47:52):
Series weekend series.

Speaker 1 (47:53):
They of course they'll still play the midweek non conference
games they have those, but this is the final non
conference weekend series to start before the start of SEC
League play when they opened in Starkville in conference play
next weekend at Mississippi State. So Jim Schlostangle, the head coach.

(48:18):
After the game, he visited with our Keith Mortland and
then had his media availability afterwards. And remember what Tuesday
night's game was. It was a game where the Longhorns
jumped out to a four to nothing lead, promptly gave
up five runs in the top of the fourth after
two outs. There were errors, wild pitches, walks, all of

(48:40):
those things, and all of a sudden you looked up
and Texas A and and Corpus Christy had a five
to four lead, and the long Horns promptly put that
away with six runs in the bottom of four ten four,
and they ended up with a fifteen to five, eight
inning run rule victory. It was called after eighty ings
when the Long Horns pleted their fifteenth run of the night,

(49:01):
which gave them a ten run margin in that end
of the ball game. So the ups, the downs, the misplays,
the stuff that went good, all that was recapped as
well as what the Long Ones did right from head
coach Jim Slosneigle.

Speaker 3 (49:15):
These were his opening comments about it.

Speaker 8 (49:19):
A lot of different feelings about that ball game, mostly positive.
Certainly caught Flores was really good, pitched deeper into the game,
mixed his pitch as well, made some nice plays. Somehow
he was using a new glove which apparently worked on
the first couple of ones and then it ejected the
other one. A lot of really good at bats obviously,

(49:43):
you know, hit some homers, and I thought we ran
the base as well. When you're trying to steal bases
and do some things on bases, there's gonna be some
outs made on the bases. But it's more about the
percentage of your step stolen bases than it is every
now and then making it out. So it's pleased about that.
I don't know if I've ever been a part of
a team giving up sixteen free bases in one inning.

Speaker 9 (50:04):
So that was ugly.

Speaker 8 (50:06):
But the positive was that it's awesome to be in
the dugout that never panics and that's a trait that
we're gonna need throughout the course of the rest of
the season, and so really proud of the team that way.

Speaker 1 (50:18):
Okay, so there was that, obviously, you start from that baseline,
and so then Schloss was asked, what is the good
that comes out of the fact that they had to
come back in the game because of the sixteen free
bases and all the mess that happened in that top

(50:39):
of the fourth inning.

Speaker 3 (50:39):
So what's the good that comes from this?

Speaker 8 (50:42):
Yeah, I mean, you know, the seasons, it's an imperfect
game played by imperfect people.

Speaker 9 (50:47):
So it's it doesn't matter who you're playing.

Speaker 8 (50:49):
You look across college baseball, there's you know, if you
don't play well, you lose. And so the fact that
I've been on plenty of teams that panic in those
moments and the at bats get worse, and you know,
you start thinking about, oh my goodness, where you know
we're losing this team and losing to somebody that everybody
says we should be. Well, if you don't play well,
you are going to lose something. You know, it doesn't
matter who you play. So so yeah, I think there's

(51:11):
a confidence there. And certainly playing at home helps and
the ball flying a little bit, but the wind died
down the rest of the game, and those the rest
of those other homers were legit. So yeah, I mean,
you don't like self imposed adversity in the free bases
because that's that's going to get you beat over time.
But it's also this is our opportunity to figure out

(51:32):
who can do what, and the players will tell us
who they are. The guys that pitch the best, pitch
the most. The guys that play the best play the most.
And neither way to find that out is to get
guys out there.

Speaker 1 (51:42):
Yeah, all right, So speaking of guys who pitched pretty well,
Jason Floores this is the freshman, not Jaling Floors, the
junior short stot, but Jason Floores, the freshman right hander.

Speaker 3 (51:52):
He's looked good so far.

Speaker 1 (51:53):
Even in shorter outings, and he I think went four
four and three and two thirds before he was taken out.
But Schloss asked what made Jason Flores effective while he
was out there?

Speaker 9 (52:07):
Yeah, I mean he was.

Speaker 8 (52:08):
He was throwing, you know, two and three pitches for strikes,
and he didn't panic when he got behind counts except
on the one ball that kicked out of his love field.

Speaker 9 (52:17):
His position. Well he hit, he hit a guy or two.

Speaker 8 (52:21):
But you know, for a young picture with that kind
of arm, that's back to back good starts. Now, you know,
one three innings, one four or so four plus. I
wanted to you know, we were I think you could
have kept going. I just wanted to see McCreery. We
wanted to see McCreery. Earlier in the early in the game,
just to try to take a little heat off him.
He's finished games. He's going to be a good pitcher

(52:42):
for us. But I thought Flores was awesome.

Speaker 1 (52:47):
Well, that's good. You mentioned Connor McCurry who was out there.
And then there's another guy out there who certainly did
the Longhorns some good when he was out there. Uh
and and and in so doing, Ruger Riojas got the
win for Texas. But additionally, as Schlosh pointed out, there

(53:11):
were other guys who helped out.

Speaker 3 (53:14):
And one of the guys that.

Speaker 1 (53:17):
Schloss pointed out was Bryce Navario, who got the final
two outs of the ball game.

Speaker 3 (53:23):
He walked on, he struck.

Speaker 1 (53:24):
Out one, and so since he closed out the game,
since he finished the game. Jim Schlastingle, the head coach,
then was asked, you know what kind of future does
Bryce Lavari have?

Speaker 9 (53:38):
Oh, yeah, I think navar can. I mean I think Navarre.

Speaker 8 (53:40):
As he gets bigger and stronger, he can be a
really good starting pitcher. And you know he's got he
really knows how to spin the ball. He's one of
the best guys in the country last year in high
school baseball in terms of just spinning the baseball, and
and that's that's a lost art today. And you know
he can throw his break and ball, two different breaking
balls behind the count to a really good change up
to and he's starting to ride the fastball sund and

(54:02):
so as he gets strongers, it would.

Speaker 9 (54:03):
Be really good. All right.

Speaker 1 (54:05):
So, speaking of spinning the ball, back to Jason Flores,
there's a guy who throws. And Keith Morland and I
were talking about this on the air when we were
out in Las Vegas last Friday night, and we were
talking about it as it related to Jared Spencer. The
Lorrens Friday night started a left hander, and this seems
to be a growing trend in college baseball where pitchers,

(54:30):
whether they're lefties or righties, now are starting to throw
for one of a better term. It's almost kind of
a hybrid. It's not quite a slider, not quite a cutter.
It might be a little faster than a slider, but
it might not have quite the break of a slider

(54:53):
or quite the break of a cutter. So Schloss was asked,
is ja sitting floor is breaking ball? There's another one
of these guys who throws that kind of hybrid pitch.
Is it what kind of breaking ball it is as
a slider or a cutter.

Speaker 9 (55:10):
He does a.

Speaker 8 (55:11):
Cutter and a little slider split, but it's the cutter
that he's able to throw in the strikes on easy
and then plays his fastball off of it.

Speaker 1 (55:22):
See and veteran coaches, they know exactly, you know what
they what that other you know even you know just
you might say subtle break might be whether you know
it falls between the lines of being a cutter or

(55:43):
a slider. He mentioned split, and several of these guys
throw a pitch that kind of does a lot of
those things, depending on you know, how well the breaking
ball is working and what the weather conditions are like
on a given night. So oh, next, Schloss was asked
what does he want to see from Jason Flores going forward?

Speaker 8 (56:06):
He needs to keep going, you know, it's always those
decisions are always relative to everybody else, right, And so
we give a series this weekend against Santa Clara. Haven't
made a final decision on Sunday, but we may give
somebody else an opportunity to start on Sunday, not because
Caid's been horrible, but just so that if we want

(56:26):
to start somebody further down the line, then they have
a starting experience, right and so uh so we'll get
through that, maybe see how the weekend goes. Uh you
know next week, I know UTSA has got a really
good team, so we'll just see heading the conference play.

Speaker 9 (56:45):
But normally you wanna you want.

Speaker 8 (56:47):
To be loaded for bear going in those SEC weekends
and I'm not gonna I'm not gonna sit Jason Flores
in that bullpen and watch us lose an SEC game.
If we if he can help us win one, we'll
worry about the next Tuesday that when that day comes.

Speaker 9 (57:00):
So you know, you could see him jump into you know, any.

Speaker 3 (57:05):
Role really, yeah, I would imagine.

Speaker 1 (57:08):
So all right, so that brings us back to Sunday,
because we know what the Friday and the Saturday starters are.

Speaker 3 (57:16):
We know who those guys are.

Speaker 1 (57:18):
So Jared Spencer is going to start the game tomorrow
night against Santa Clara, and Luke Harrison will start the
Saturday ball game against Santa Clara. So Schloss was asked
what's his mindset on what he thinks he might want
to do with his starter for Sunday.

Speaker 8 (57:34):
You know, potentially valanis you know I'd like to see
him start a game and then we can see just
to give him that experience and then go into the
following weekend and.

Speaker 9 (57:45):
Just kind of see how it plays out.

Speaker 1 (57:48):
Okay, all right, so there's some thoughts from Jim Silas Nigle.
We'll get to a couple more next hour. Of course,
next hour we'll talk to Major League Baseball with Geene
Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office. We've got
some pro football notes NBA notes to get to when
we continue here on thirteen under the Zone, three thirty
five here on this afternoon, now three thirty six, on

(58:09):
this Thursday, Andrew Zimmo, I haven't asked you lately because
I've been out of town so much. Give me a
little pulse on what you're seeing, thinking, feeling, hearing and
understanding about your hometown team, the San Antonio Spurs these.

Speaker 2 (58:23):
Days, brother, when Wimby went down, a lot of era
left my sales. And it's been fun to watch dearon Fox.
But this is not what I was hoping for from
this season.

Speaker 1 (58:38):
Well, yeah, and then of course not having Pop, you know,
it's a big part of that. Of course, it was
recently announced he's not going to be back for the
rest of this season, but there's hope about what he
might be able to do coming back forward. Do you
get the sense that they figured, you know, once Wimby
gets you know, the thing with the blood clot thing
and getting that under getting that eradicated as Spurs management

(59:03):
management seems to think it will that the medication will
handle that, that that'll get rid of that, and getting
a chance to work with the Aaron Fox, that this
thing might continue to build Ford, especially with the other
guys that they have right now that are contributing.

Speaker 2 (59:19):
One hundred percent, Like, once we can get the entire
band back together, there, Wimby's healthy, Fox is healthy. Pop
is on the sideline. Sky's the limits. But right now
I'm just trugging through the next twenty games and looking
for my ping pong balls.

Speaker 1 (59:32):
That's what I'm doing. Look at you, hoping lottery, I understand,
all right. So I'm asking right now, top of your head,
best team in the NBA right now.

Speaker 3 (59:42):
Is Oklahoma City Thunder?

Speaker 1 (59:46):
Okay, Hi, where do you stand with the Cleveland Cavaliers
right now?

Speaker 2 (59:53):
I am I'm excited for the Calvs. I just think
they need to get some playoff lumps Boston Celtics defending champions.

Speaker 3 (59:59):
I'm not betting again, stem you know what you sound like.

Speaker 1 (01:00:03):
I was a Colin Cowherd was just saying that right
before he came on the air, and he said, because
they are so young right now, that he's not he's
not going to be putting all his eggs in that
basket for Cleveland. But he really does like Cleveland. Jared
Allen's playing great right now, the former long Yes, really
really playing well for them right now. So that's that's

(01:00:23):
It's good to see him playing well and we'll see,
you know how it is going down the stretch of
the regular season. Meanwhile, they've popped back up again the
Kevin Durant trade proposals as well. Of course, he's in
the last year of a four year, one hundred ninety
eight million dollar extension that he signed in Brooklyn. He

(01:00:46):
doesn't have a no trade clause like Bradley Beal does there,
but he pretty much holds the leverage on where he
can go. For example, he said, and this was a
quote that he said last month, when he leaves on
Draymond Green Show, which I find quite it's Draymond Green

(01:01:06):
with Baron Davis. Yeah, I find it ironic given the
acrimonious time that was spent in the Bay Area when
the two were part of Golden State's teams that won
titled out there. But he said, I want my career
now on my terms. That's the only thing I'm worried about,
because I see a lot of dudes that don't get
that opportunity. So I want to keep putting in that

(01:01:28):
work to make that choice on my own. It's been
reported by multiple outlets that the Sons are willing to
work with Katie on a deal if there's a decision
to move him after the season.

Speaker 3 (01:01:44):
But there's a couple of factors that go into this.

Speaker 1 (01:01:47):
The first is, is he willing to sign a two year,
one hundred and twenty two million dollar extension with the
team that trades for him, And because he can be
a free agent twenty twenty six, it's unlikely that a
team would trade draft capital and players for one year rental.

Speaker 3 (01:02:07):
You know, they want a little more than just one year.
That's one thing.

Speaker 1 (01:02:10):
And then the other thing is this, would the team
that trades for him still be in contention, would would
he still be available, would he still be in position
to really help them make a major push because he's
thirty six and his next team is likely to be
his last opportunity to add that third ring. So the

(01:02:34):
teams that have been mentioned Mavericks have been one, Rockets
have been one, Miami, the Knicks. Those are the teams
apparently that would seem best suited for him a deal.
Do any of those teams Mavericks, Rockets, Heat or Knicks

(01:02:54):
seem likely to you is a group that might be
willing to deal with Phoenix to get KD.

Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
I think all those teams would make a deal, Craig,
I just don't think any of those teams are competing
for a title with KD. That's where my issue would
be the Knicks. That feels like a very over the
top move after especially just after trading for Karl Anthony Towns.
But I think the Rockets, probably of those four teams,
makes the most sense.

Speaker 3 (01:03:22):
Yeah, I think so. I think probably so it might.

Speaker 1 (01:03:25):
I was thinking Rockets also if it were to happen,
and the hype of the hypotheses that come forward on
a deal like that would include, say, for example, if
the Rockets were willing to do a deal, maybe KD
goes to Houston in exchange for this is one thing

(01:03:46):
I read Dylan Brooks, Reed Shepherd, Cam Whitmore and Jack
Landale plus two first round draft picks twenty twenty five
and twenty twenty seven via Phoenix. The twenty twenty five
first would be conveyed after the draft lottery, which comes
up in May. So it's a lot, but maybe it
isn't a lot when you consider what Kevin can bring

(01:04:08):
to a team, So that that might be the most
logical scenario, you know, Miami, Maybe.

Speaker 3 (01:04:16):
That there could be a deal involved with that.

Speaker 1 (01:04:21):
You know, the Knicks and an Obi and Mitch Robinson
might be involved in that deal.

Speaker 3 (01:04:26):
And where the Mavericks are concerned.

Speaker 1 (01:04:29):
Gosh, you know, to take a pick of lots of
guys to Klay Thompson, PJ Washingt, Igi Marshall, Derek Lively
first round pick.

Speaker 3 (01:04:36):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:04:36):
Of course, the Mavericks have already kind of gutted themselves
with what Nico did with the with obviously with the
Luca trade.

Speaker 3 (01:04:44):
But we'll see how it is going forward on them
all right.

Speaker 1 (01:04:48):
We will be back to wrap up hour number two
right here on Am thirteen hundred the Zone. A couple
of things before we get toward the top of the hour,
and then we have one more hour of the program.

Speaker 5 (01:04:58):
To go.

Speaker 1 (01:05:00):
On the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament. The first two games,
the day time games, are in the books. In the
second round, Vanderbilt, the eight seed, beat Tennessee the nine seed,
eighty four to seventy six. So now Vanderbilt draws the
number one seed. South Carolina, of course, had the co
championship with Texas, and it took the commissioner, Greg Sanky

(01:05:20):
flipping a coin to decide who would get the one seed.
South Carolina got the one seed. By the way, I
still think way way too much was made out of that.
Folks that were besides themselves are highly critical or whatever
about breaking that time, and there's to be another way.
It really doesn't matter a great deal because both are

(01:05:44):
headed for the NCAA tournament. Both have a real good
chance to be number one seeds in the n A tournament.
That matters most. So I don't think it matters that much.
You know, you'd say, well, Texas is the two might
have a tougher se final match having to go potentially
against LSU, but LSU is going to be without Flaje Johnson,

(01:06:05):
even if they're outstanding guard who got injured last Sunday
in their regular season finale against Ole Miss, So who knows,
maybe it'll be an easier up, maybe not. South Carolina
will play Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals on the top side
of the bracket. Also on the top side of the bracket,
it'll be the four seed against the five seeds, so
the seed's holding the form. Kentucky, which got a double

(01:06:26):
by the four seed, will now play the five seed Oklahoma.
Oklahoma won this afternoon over Georgia seventy to fifty two.

Speaker 3 (01:06:34):
The evening session.

Speaker 1 (01:06:36):
Actually begins a little over an hour from now, and
this is the game that long Corn fans will want
to pay attention to. The seven seed Old Miss the
ten seed Mississippi State, so a little egg bowl basketball
rivalry stuff. The winner of that game will face Texas
tomorrow afternoon at five o'clock. Will be that one at

(01:06:57):
five o'clock tomorrow afternoon. You can hear that on one
of three point one FM, and so that that will
be the first of the evening session and the first
of the evening session tonight. The six seed Alabama the
eleven seed Florida. The winner of that will play the
three seed LSU. That game would be at about seven

(01:07:19):
point thirty tomorrow night, and that would complete the quarterfinal setup.
So that's where it stands right now. Texas awaits the
winner of this matchup that will get underway a little
over an hour from now, Ole Miss against Mississippi State,
So those two would get together and it could be
pretty that could wind up being being quite entertaining about that,

(01:07:45):
just to see how those you know, how these games
match up before Texas gets an opportunity. So that's something
else to keep track of. Okay, there was one other thing.
Oh yeah, I wanted to get to this. Of course,
this is also your station for Round Rock Express Baseball.

(01:08:08):
And so the Express will of course be opening their
new season very very soon. And as they get ready
to start their new season, they've announced their top twenty
five Express team. In other words, this is their twenty
fifth season team, so it's you know, they're getting ready

(01:08:31):
to celebrate the twenty fifth season of baseball at Dell
Diamond and that they'll and this is.

Speaker 3 (01:08:38):
Following an offseason fan vote.

Speaker 1 (01:08:41):
So the Express have announced their top twenty five Express
team and they're going to give out a trading card
set for the game on May thirty first, when they
host Reno the Reno Aces, which is the Diamondbacks Triple
A affiliate, the first two thousand Express fans through the
gates on that Saturday, May thirty first, we'll get a
card set for that. Okay, first of all, I've never

(01:09:01):
seen an all time whatever team, or an all decade team,
or an all whatever team that has two managers.

Speaker 3 (01:09:09):
But they do, and both are deserving.

Speaker 1 (01:09:12):
Jackie Moore the original manager from two thousand to two
thousand and seven, and he went into the Hall of
Fame in twenty fourteen. He was the original manager, led
the first ever Express team to the Texas League Championship
in two thousand.

Speaker 3 (01:09:25):
He earned Manager of the Year awards.

Speaker 1 (01:09:27):
He had division titles in two thousand and one, in
two thousand and four, had a playoff berth you know,
two three seventy six and three twenty four Lifetime and
two twenty and two ten in the Pacific Coast League.
And so he's one of the managers. The other is
Bobby Jones, who's going to go into the Hall of Fame.
And of course he had played with the Rangers. I mean,

(01:09:48):
there was all the way back. I think the Washing Senators.
He was in there before then when they moved in,
and then he was the skipper of the Express for
three seasons.

Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
They went two twenty nine and two or three.

Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
All right, the catchers, two of them I took. Kintaro
of course, played twelve seasons in the Bigs. Bret Nicholas
as well, seeing time of the Rangers. At first base,
Mark Sacamano, who's of course former Baylor Bear, and Chris
Davis drafted by the Rangers, and Blaine Krim So there's
three first basemen.

Speaker 3 (01:10:18):
At second base Keith Ginner.

Speaker 1 (01:10:21):
A member of that original Round Rock Express team that
won the championship. Brooks Conrad there as well at shortstop,
just won and he's a good one. Jerkson Profar, who
of course is playing right now for the Padres. Third base,
Morgan Ensburg on that original championship team, Royce Huffman who's
an Express Hall of Famer, Mike Coolball, also Matt Cotta

(01:10:44):
and Joey Gallo in the outfield, Jason Lane, Luke Scott,
Joey Butler, and Jared Hoying. Also Kyle Tucker, Jordan Alvarez. Yeah,
these are all very familiar names. And Bubba Thompson starting
pitcher about roy oswalt An Express Hall of Famer, Kirk
Sarlows of course, the head coach of TCU now Bud
Norris out of the bullpen, Travis Driscoll and Jimmy Ras.

(01:11:07):
So there it is your top twenty five Express team.
So that's pretty impressive to see, and they'll have that
going into their twenty fifth season. I also wanted to
have the opportunity to thank Leif Johnson Ford for being
a partner of this show. I've been buying trucks from

(01:11:28):
Leif Johnson Ford, buying vehicles and leasing vehicles from Leif
for almost thirty years and they're a great client. If
you're a business owner and you'd like me to speak
for your company, send me an email at craigwa atiheartmedia
dot com. And thanks again the Leif Johnson Forward for
their partnership. Final hour of the program coming up here.

(01:11:49):
I'm thirteen hundred Zone Craig Wade with you on alongside
the producer andrews Emma.

Speaker 3 (01:11:57):
It's been a busy Guylade. We kept him busy as we've.

Speaker 1 (01:12:00):
Had the overlap between baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, all
that's been going on, and Zimmo has been equal to
the task, and we're going to make sure he's equal
to the task again yet Tomorrow, as we have the
program for you, and Andrew will be at the Helm,

(01:12:23):
I will check in for the ballpark. I'll be over
at UFCU dish Faul Fields to do that and correct
me if I'm wrong about this him. You're also going
to get a little drop in live visitation from one
Cameron Parker there at the Bond Secure's Arena Wellness Center
in Greenville, South Carolina, prior to the Texas Women's SEC

(01:12:47):
Tournament quarterfinal against either role Mississippi State tomorrow afternoon.

Speaker 3 (01:12:50):
Correct, that is correct.

Speaker 2 (01:12:52):
Plus he gets me to produce his game for him too,
So me and Cameron are going to be two pizza pod.

Speaker 1 (01:12:58):
That's right. You'll beat the studio. That's Marathon Man there
you go. Okay, So that's good. That's good.

Speaker 3 (01:13:06):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:13:08):
I got some other things we're gonna hear from. We're
gonna visit with Gene Watson A Framlin the Chicago White
Sox coming up here in just a few.

Speaker 3 (01:13:18):
Minutes, so we'll visit with him. Talks in Big League Baseball.

Speaker 1 (01:13:21):
We will hear some more from Jim Schlosnagel as well,
the Longhorns head coach. And of course Texas has their
matchup coming up with Santa Clara tomorrow evening at UFCU
Dish Fault Field at six thirty. Also a couple other
programming reminders for you. Our final Longhorn weekly program of
the season with head basketball coach Rodney Terry, comes away

(01:13:44):
from Pluckers the West Campus location and that's a twenty
two to twenty two rear grand that's coming up at
six o'clock this evening. Arthur Kaluma, Longhorn's senior Ford, one
of the seniors who will be honored on Senior Night
on Saturday Night, will be our special guest. So Kaluma
will be with us tonight. So we have that coming

(01:14:06):
away tonight at six o'clock. And I mentioned Long Worn
Baseball tomorrow at six thirty here on the Zone Texas
Women on one oh three point one FM. It's a
four to forty five pre game start time at a
five o'clock tip. Saturday Long Worn Baseball one forty five
air time, two o'clock first pitch against Santa Clara and
then Saturday Night both here on the Zone and on

(01:14:29):
ninety eight point one fmkvet long worn men's basketball, the
regular season finale against Oklahoma and a huge, absolutely very
very important game tomorrow or Saturday for Texas. They really
are in need of a win. I would say this

(01:14:50):
in terms of being considered for an at large bid,
and of course, you know, if you win the conference tournament,
you win the automatic bid that punches your ticket.

Speaker 3 (01:15:06):
You're already in.

Speaker 1 (01:15:08):
But if we're being real, the odds of a team
winning five games and five nights are extremely low, especially
if you're a double digit seed going into it.

Speaker 3 (01:15:18):
It's not good odds for you. It has happened.

Speaker 1 (01:15:21):
It happened last year with North Carolina State the ACC,
it happened to the ACC well I think a couple
of years before that with Virginia Tech. It's happened in
the Big East. Both Yukon and I think Syracuse have
pulled it off. But that's examples that you can count
on one hand. So the odds are greatly against winning

(01:15:42):
five games and five nights.

Speaker 3 (01:15:43):
Hard enough to do it with four.

Speaker 1 (01:15:45):
But now with the super conferences, you know, the power
fives being as large as they are, that expand expands
the tournament to four days and five days instead of
just being used to be like you three days. But
you know you can win the automatic bid by doing that.

(01:16:06):
Failing that and trying to get in as an at large,
you have to couch yourself the best way possible to
do it and toward that in I think the Long
Orangs pretty much are in a must win situation in
terms of from an at large perspective for a couple
of reasons. One, they're seventeen and thirteen and they need

(01:16:28):
another Quad one victory. Two, they are playing an Oklahoma
team that's in almost the identical situation that they are in.
Oklahoma is only one I think it's what five conference
games this season, the Long Orange have won six and

(01:16:48):
Oklahom has one more overall win. Remember the Sooner started
thirteen and oh but they're eighteen and twelve now, so
they're five and twelve in se play, so they're in
a desperate situation. So I think the Long Runs have
to win that game as well, so that would be
two in a row. They got a nice Quad one

(01:17:10):
road win at Mississippi State on Tuesday night, beating a
ranked team, getting and for Quad for people who are
not quite getting what that means. Quad one. There are
four quadrants in the quad of the computer rankings, and
what are the net rankings that are.

Speaker 3 (01:17:30):
Monitored by the NCAA.

Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
And if you are in Quad one, then in the
top I guess it's seventy five. That's a good win.
That's considered a good win. Quad two less so, Quad
three less so. And the one thing you don't want
to lose is lose a Quad four game because that
really hurts you. So it's important to try to garner

(01:17:54):
as many Quad one wins as you can, and in
addition to just losing as few as possible, overall loses
few of the lower quad games as possible. So long
Wards could use another Quad one win, that would and
it would hurt Oklahoma, it would probably knock them off
the bubble. Then they go to Nashville and they would

(01:18:16):
take on probably it looks like it'll be the Georgia Bulldogs,
and it looks like it'll be next Wednesday afternoon at
two thirty is when it would be, So it'd be
kind of during this space when we normally bring in
the program, we bring a basketball game instead, So it'd
probably be next Tuesday Wednesday, I said Tuesday, beg pardon
on that next Wednesday from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Texas

(01:18:41):
is gonna, in all probability be in the twelve slash
thirteen game. There's a mathematical chance it could even slide
as low as fourteen, but it's probably not gonna happen.
Probably gonna be in the twelve thirteen game that would
be at two thirty in the afternoon, probably against Georgia.
There's a couple other premier day chase that can work
into it. It's probably going to be Texas and Georgia.

(01:19:02):
And of course the long Wrns lost to Georgia at
home last Saturday, so they would need to win there.
It would balance the books they were Georgia. Also, Georgia
is another one of those teams that's trying to fight
its way onto the bubble and into the field, so
you could, you know, personally eliminate another one with a win.
That's why these next two games are absolutely critical to

(01:19:23):
the Longhorn's hopes of landing an NCAA tournament bid as
an at large.

Speaker 3 (01:19:28):
Like I said, catch lighting in a bottle.

Speaker 1 (01:19:31):
Win five games in five days, you get your ticket
stamped to get the automatic bid. Failing that, bolstering your
resume as as one of the best sixty eight in
the country, they need a couple more wins to feel
better about that. Even then, not guarantee, but at least
they would probably be right by the plus side of

(01:19:53):
the bubble, depending on what happens in the other conference
tournaments across the country.

Speaker 3 (01:19:56):
And again, as I mentioned in the first hour of
the program.

Speaker 1 (01:19:59):
If you're one of these bubble teams like Texas, you
want as much chalk as possible. In other words, you
want Duke to win the ACC tournament. You want Saint
John's to win the Big East Tournament. You want Houston
to win the Big twelve tournament.

Speaker 3 (01:20:16):
You want.

Speaker 1 (01:20:19):
Michigan State I guess to win the Big Ten tournament.
In other words, you want those teams that are definitely
going to be in the field anyway winning the tournament.
And you want as few of those bubble teams that,
like Texas, are trying to get some wins in the
conference tournament, if not win the whole thing, to boost
the resume.

Speaker 3 (01:20:40):
You want chalk. You want those teams that are supposed
to do well to do well. In the tournament.

Speaker 1 (01:20:45):
All right, up next we'll talk to Major League Baseball,
will visit with Geene Watson from the Chicago White Sox
front office when we continue on thirteen under the zone.

Speaker 3 (01:20:54):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:20:56):
Here on this Thursday afternoon, as I mentioned Longhorn Baseball,
we be back in action tomorrow as the Longhorns trying
to make it eleven in.

Speaker 3 (01:21:13):
Row after dropping that.

Speaker 1 (01:21:15):
Season opener in extra innings to Louisville, which is gosh,
it'll be two weeks ago tomorrow. They haven't lost since
they won ten in row, so they're ten and one
under Jim schlas Nagle, and they'll be back at work
tomorrow night, Santa Clara coming in for the first of
a three game weekend series. But we want to talk

(01:21:37):
baseball from the Major league perspective.

Speaker 3 (01:21:39):
We do that.

Speaker 1 (01:21:41):
During the course of the season on a weekly basis
with a good friend from the Chicago White Sox front office,
Geene Watson, who joins us now from California. GINO at California, Arizona, Arizona,
I should say, not California, but warm weather. Nevertheless, right
out in the Cactus State.

Speaker 10 (01:22:00):
It's actually freezing here today. It's been raining half the day,
and we're in bad shape for tomorrow. I don't think
games are gonna be played out here tomorrow, but we'll.

Speaker 3 (01:22:08):
See your kidding.

Speaker 4 (01:22:10):
Whether I can ever remember, it has been just crazy
weather from day to day. I wear a hoodie it's hot.

Speaker 10 (01:22:17):
I don't wear a hoodie it's freezing. So that's the
way it goes out here.

Speaker 3 (01:22:21):
Yeah, I'm with a badge. It's so all right.

Speaker 1 (01:22:25):
I want to There's a variety of topics I want
to get to here with you, but one of them
is a piece that I was fascinated by today, written
by our good friend Jet Passing, who I got a
chance to meet and get to know at the Sportscaster
of the Year banquet last year. He was the Sports
Writer of the Year, the National sports Writer. You're a
great guy, I know you know him. And he wrote

(01:22:48):
a piece about what and I don't know how much
thought folks had put in this from a collective perspective,
but he wrote a piece on what it's going to
mean for Major League Baseball with the A's playing in
Sacramento and the Rays playing in the Yankees UH Minor
League and spring training ballpark in Tampa, and what it's

(01:23:11):
going to mean for that in terms of the ramifications
of you know, what the the building up of the ballpark,
and you know, I guess with Tampa Bay playing at
Steinbrenner Field and they're having to.

Speaker 3 (01:23:25):
Do a lot of different things, what is it?

Speaker 1 (01:23:27):
What are the things that you're hearing about, how how
easy or uneasy folks are feeling about how this is
going to play out with two major league teams playing
their full schedules home schedules at two minor league facilities
this year.

Speaker 10 (01:23:44):
Well, I'm very familiar with both ballparks. I've been to
both ballparks probably one hundred games each. I think the
one thing you're going to see more than anything is
offensive increase with both in both ballparks, I think you're
going to see very high offensive outputs. I don't think
pitchers are gonna be very happy about pitching in these parks.

(01:24:08):
But I also think they're both too kind of very
intimate ballparks. And you know, I mean, we have these
ballparks that are thirty five forty five thousand seed stadiums,
and most nights, you know, a lot of the seats
are empty. You know, unless your team's in first place,
are competing for a World Series. And so in this instance,
most nights these ballparks are gonna be very full. It's

(01:24:30):
gonna be very intimate, and I know that teams are
gonna be working hard to make a great game day
experience for them. But certainly the offensive outputs are gonna
be extremely high. And uh, it's gonna be, you know,
something to pay attention to.

Speaker 1 (01:24:46):
How do you think that that the parks are gonna
play for for for both the A's whatever we're calling them.
I guess they're just saying just call them the A's, uh,
and and and for the race?

Speaker 3 (01:24:57):
How will these two ballparks.

Speaker 1 (01:24:58):
Play especially I'm really kind of really interested in Tampa
Bay because they've been playing home games obviously indoors at
the drop before the hurricane damage, and so now they're
playing outside as many do obviously during the spring.

Speaker 3 (01:25:13):
But you're but I've been.

Speaker 1 (01:25:15):
Told it could be multiple double headers this year because
of those late afternoon thunderstorms that moved through Tampa the
Tampa Bay area. How do you think that ballpark's gounda
play for the Rays?

Speaker 10 (01:25:27):
That's gonna be the more unique management situation from the
race standpoint in that you know, The last thing you
want to do, especially with your top of rotation guys,
is get them hot, get them into the game, and
then you have an hour and fifteen minute rain delay
and they're shut down.

Speaker 3 (01:25:42):
For the night.

Speaker 4 (01:25:43):
And I covered the Floridas Day League.

Speaker 10 (01:25:45):
For fourteen years, and that was certainly a daily occurrence,
especially in the months of June and July. I think
if you look at that April schedule, they're home a
bunch to try to combat some of that. But certainly
there's gonna be some management standpoint from the pitch. There's
gonna be some management standpoint from pregame work.

Speaker 4 (01:26:03):
Uh. But they're both very.

Speaker 10 (01:26:05):
Quaint, very inimate ballparks, and other than what I think
the offenses are gonna do, I think we're gonna see
a lot of home runs. I think that the fans
are gonna enjoy it.

Speaker 3 (01:26:25):
I don't know where.

Speaker 2 (01:26:27):
I don't know where corregt Len Jean Andrews, iim of
the producer stepping in here. So you're talking about the
the A's do, so we don't know what we're gonna
call him this year.

Speaker 3 (01:26:37):
I'm sorry, Hey, Gene So andrewsim.

Speaker 2 (01:26:39):
Of the producers stepping in because I think we have
another connection issue with with Craig, but I caught my attention.
So we don't know what we're gonna call Oakland this year,
if they're gonna be the A's or something else.

Speaker 4 (01:26:49):
They're they're calling them the Sacramento Athletics.

Speaker 2 (01:26:52):
Interesting. Okay, So what do you think, Uh, how do
you think that's gonna go over?

Speaker 10 (01:26:58):
Well, certainly in northern Californias, there's gonna be a lot
of pride around the Sacramento team.

Speaker 4 (01:27:02):
What's gonna be interesting about the ballpark.

Speaker 10 (01:27:04):
Is there's gonna be a game there every night, and
it's a grass field, and so you're gonna have when
when the A's are not home, the Triple A team
is going to be playing there, and so the Triple
A Giants will be playing there, and so you're gonna
have an instance where you've got grass fields and there's
a game every night, and they're probably gonna be replacing
it at some point in JUNI or July.

Speaker 3 (01:27:27):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (01:27:28):
So that what does that mean for like the uptick
because I imagine that's going to take a lot of
a lot of work to make sure that stadium looks
as good as it needs to for a major League stadium.

Speaker 10 (01:27:37):
Yeah, but these guys are really really good at their
jobs and they'll uh don't have it ready to go.

Speaker 2 (01:27:42):
So you're talking more about like what the weather looks
like down there.

Speaker 9 (01:27:46):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:27:46):
I know it's lame to talk weather, but how does
this affect guys when you're trying to get in that
warm up, you're trying to get those pitches, you're trying
to get your cadences down, and you know you might
not be able to play. What does that mean?

Speaker 10 (01:27:59):
Yeah, I think from a from a health standpoint, you've
got to be very careful in that you're not you know,
getting your your especially top to mid rotation type starters up.
Certainly over two or three starts where they're getting up
and getting hot and then they're forced they're sitting there
with a one hour one hour halfway to lay and
they're scratch for the night. And you look over five

(01:28:19):
or six starts at home and you you've been shut
down for three of them because of weather. So there's
certainly going to be some management to it over time,
especially early.

Speaker 3 (01:28:30):
All right.

Speaker 2 (01:28:30):
I think Craig is getting back on it now, but yeah,
I guess mine, I'm here. All right, There we go
there's Craig Way all.

Speaker 3 (01:28:38):
Right, H.

Speaker 1 (01:28:39):
Geno was going to ask you with as we head
down the home stretch here of spring training, Uh, to
get your thoughts. And teams always ask you because there's
a great deal of curiosity always about the Yankees, and
now with Luis Heel being sidelined for at least three
three months because of that lap strain and uh and

(01:29:03):
Gean Carlo Stanton, Uh, they're kind of you know, your
your old pal, Brian Cashman's having to think about whether
he has surgery on his elbows.

Speaker 3 (01:29:12):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:29:13):
DJ Lem Mayhew has a left calf strain. What about
your thoughts on the Yankees right now?

Speaker 10 (01:29:19):
Yeah, it's tough because they've got so much expectations going
into the year and just in you know, part of
my job is reaching out to the twenty nine other
clubs and and what the needs are. And a lot
of clubs are looking for starting pitching and a lot
of clubs are looking for right handed bats right now.
So the acquisition costs to improve your club right now
externally is going to be extremely high. And so it's

(01:29:40):
not something that a lot of clubs are going to
be willing to jump out and do they're gonna have to,
you know, go with the internals and try to you know,
evaluate their teams, you know, the first thirty forty games
of the season, and so it's certainly gonna be something
that they have to manage.

Speaker 4 (01:29:54):
But you know, and and you.

Speaker 10 (01:29:56):
Know it's it's marks, you know, six or whatever it is.
And you know, we've got to get to the end
of this month and the injuries have really hampered a
lot of teams right.

Speaker 1 (01:30:04):
Now, position switches among brand names. Of course, we've been
hearing about Al Tuvey being willing to go to left field.

Speaker 3 (01:30:13):
Nastro he's looking at it.

Speaker 1 (01:30:14):
And now Bryce Harper said yesterday in The Athletic that
he said he visited with Phillies management about going back
to the outfield if the Phillies can significantly upgrade at
first base.

Speaker 3 (01:30:32):
Obviously, you know.

Speaker 1 (01:30:35):
There's other guys, there's he said, when Pete Alonzo was
still on the block, I kind of sat there and
was like, hey, why not.

Speaker 3 (01:30:41):
And when we talked about it, I just.

Speaker 1 (01:30:43):
Reiterated to the Phillies and Scott Boris is age and
I'd be willing to move out there if it's going
to help us. I love playing first base. It's been great,
but if it's going to help us win, I'd go
back out there. Of course, Alonzo resigned with the Mets.
He could be available after this season if he opts
out of the two year deal. You got Vladimir Guerrera
Junior scheduled to become a free agent. He didn't get
to a deal as well. What do you make about

(01:31:04):
this with veterans now, I mean this goes on back.
I mean, I know you'll even remember, like I did,
reading about you know, Mickey Mantle switching the first base
late in his career, even prior to that, Yogi Bearra
moving from behind the plate to the outfield, Johnny Bench
doing the same thing as well. A bunch of thoughts
about this and what it means to these teams.

Speaker 10 (01:31:23):
It can be somewhat of a double edged sword. It
can be good in the fact that a lot of
guys it just takes a lot of pressure off the
defense and they can go out to the outfield and
they can just relax and focus on offense. It can
be a double edged sword and the fact that some
guys they lose the focus of being into every pitch
on the dirt and the concentration levels can affect their offense,

(01:31:47):
and so it's something that it affects every player a
little bit differently. From a health standpoint, it's certainly better,
you know, unless you're moving in the center field. It's
certainly better on their health to be in the outfield.
You know, I'd be handling the ball on the grind
of playing on the.

Speaker 4 (01:32:03):
Dirt every day. But but some guys need that focus.

Speaker 10 (01:32:06):
It's the same as you know, some guys can sit
on a bench and take four at bats to night
and be very very good at it.

Speaker 4 (01:32:12):
Some guys have to do on the field.

Speaker 10 (01:32:13):
So every player is different in this regard, and I
think what you're seeing now as a group of players
that are trying to do with the best they can
to make their teams as good as they could possibly
be defensively well.

Speaker 3 (01:32:26):
And then also.

Speaker 9 (01:32:29):
The deal is.

Speaker 1 (01:32:31):
With the Dodgers with Mookie Batts going back over to
shortstop as well. He started it short last year, then
of course got injured, and then when he came back,
he went back into the outfield. But now with the
deals of Dodgers and Mookie's gone back to shortstop. I
remember last year you met a great point when you said,
this is going to be really interesting to watch to

(01:32:52):
see how comfortable he can be at short and it
looked like he got pretty comfortable before.

Speaker 3 (01:32:58):
He got hurt.

Speaker 1 (01:32:58):
I don't know if we got an enough of a
sample size about that, But how about your thoughts on.

Speaker 10 (01:33:02):
That, Well, they have two really young shortstops that even
if he can buy the time for them to get
up there, they're they're very very good defenders in Freeland
and Noah Miller. They're not going to be the offensive
players that you would want, but they're going to catch
everything and play above average defense. So this can buy
some time for the development of those two players and

(01:33:25):
or evaluate a shortstop from another club that they may
want to go add. But Mookie's just such a gifted player.
He's a once in a generation type player, and you
know he's obviously going to do whatever he has to
do to help his team win. And and they know
he's athletic enough, and he's certainly prepared, and with today's positioning,
they feel like it's something he can continue to do.
And so I'm sure that they will exhaust every effort

(01:33:48):
to make that possible in this season.

Speaker 1 (01:33:50):
Okay, all right, and then the final thing I wanted
to ask you about because you know this subject only
too well, and it's changes announced by the Baseball Hall
of Fame to the ERA Committee eligibility required it. So
the Hall of Fame, for folks who didn't know, announced
changes to their ERA Committee selection that allows players who've

(01:34:12):
been retired for more than fifteen years to be considered
for the Hall of Fame as well as managers, umpires
executive So, beginning this year, any Hall of Fame candidate
on an ERA Committee ballot who does not receive at
least five votes from the sixteen member ERA Committee will
not be eligible to be placed back on the ballot

(01:34:32):
in its next three year cycle. Now, a candidate can
still return to an ERA Committee ballot after skipping one cycle,
but any candidate who does not receive five votes on
multiple ERA Committee ballots will no longer be eligible for
any future ballots. Do you think that this would be
an issue that might have some guys that are out

(01:34:52):
there on the bubble as possibility, because remember last year
that Classic Baseball Era Committee elect Dick Allen and the
Parker out of an eight player ballot, and then they
allowed Alan and Parker to earn induction in the Cooperstown
through that alternate path to the Traditional Writers Association America ballot.

Speaker 3 (01:35:12):
How do you feel about that?

Speaker 10 (01:35:14):
Well, you know, I worked with Jim, Tony and Tony
Larus every day and we actually talked about this yesterday
at breakfast for a very very long time.

Speaker 4 (01:35:22):
And what I would say is.

Speaker 10 (01:35:24):
That there's a there's enough communication and there's enough I
don't want to say rallying around or campaigning, but you know,
this is a very very prideful group. Uh, it's it's
obviously a very educated group when it comes to the
criteria of being in Cooperstown. And so I don't feel
like if a if a player has fallen off the ballot, uh,

(01:35:47):
that it's it's a player that that did deserve to
be in the Hall of Fame. These guys talk way
too much. There's too much communication, there's too much uh
you know, they meet all the time, they break down
the crime here. You they'll they'll balance out what one
guy's career in air was versus others. So I think
this is just kind of a way of filtering out

(01:36:08):
that borderline player, that that very very good player that's
not good enough being the Hall of fame and kind
of just cutting the list down a little bit over
the long term.

Speaker 3 (01:36:17):
Gino, I'll leave you with this today.

Speaker 1 (01:36:19):
Today, one of a kind autograph baseball card featuring a
patch of the number thirty jersey that Paul Schemes wore
during his major league debut is headed to auction. What
kind of world are we living in now? I mean,
what kind of money do you think this thing is
going to fetch for the first time? First year that

(01:36:42):
it says there's no reserve on the card. You can
put in a twenty dollars bit if you want, but
it's probably not going to stick for very long.

Speaker 10 (01:36:49):
Something tells me the Pirates organization is gonna have something to.

Speaker 4 (01:36:52):
Say about it.

Speaker 10 (01:36:54):
Really yeah, I think that's something they want to get
their hands on, so it'll be interesting to all Right.

Speaker 1 (01:37:01):
Hey, Gino, I appreciate the time. Thanks for joining us.
We'll look forward to visiting next week.

Speaker 4 (01:37:08):
Greg, take care bye.

Speaker 1 (01:37:09):
All right, that's Gean Watson from the Chicago White Sox
front office. You know this, this card has generated a
great deal of discussion. Normally it's the kind of discussion
it goes over like a Mickey Mantle card or a
Honnice Wagner or Kim Griffy Junior or something like that.
But this is it's the advantage to this Schemes card

(01:37:33):
is that social media has kind of amped it up
a little bit. That those other cards do not enjoy
that kind of advantage. So we'll see how that rolls through.
All Right, we got more coming up and we continue
here on thirteen under the Zone. All right, thanks again
at Geene Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office
joining us.

Speaker 3 (01:37:52):
I'm glad our resident Guardians fan checks in.

Speaker 1 (01:37:54):
So, speaking of position changes, the Guardians signed Tyler Naquin
as a pitcher. Yeah, remember when he played a text
A and M. It's a pretty good outfeeler. Naquin was
good played third base. So anyway, let's let's hear some
more from Jim Schlasnigle the Long Horns, uh head coach.

Speaker 3 (01:38:17):
Uh and uh. This again.

Speaker 1 (01:38:21):
Goes to uh coming off the win on Tuesday night
over Texas A and M Corpus Christie and uh. It's
it's a it's a recap, but it's also with an
eye toward what's gonna happen with the upcoming series starting

(01:38:42):
tomorrow night against Santa Clara. So I want to start
off with a guy who has served the Long Horns
as a starter as a reliever. He looked great in
the Friday night series opener, the three games they played
in Las Vegas, Max Grubbs. He retired Washington on ten pitches,

(01:39:04):
and that was after Washington had really taken some real
hard licks against a Texas bullpen. But Grubs has also
kind of had a little bit of a bumpy ride
throughout his career. Would be it as a starter or
as a reliever, So the question for Schloss was how
pivotal is Max Grubbs, whether he's coming out of the

(01:39:26):
bullpen or more importantly as a starter.

Speaker 8 (01:39:30):
Yeah, i'd be I mean, he certainly could start. But again,
you saw Ruger with a little bit of rest. Who
gave him that rest? Grubbs gave him that rest. Ruger
was infinitely better tonight than he's been in the last
ten days because he just had his legs under him
a little bit, ran the fastball up to ninety five,
and breaking pitches were had more bite and crisp.

Speaker 9 (01:39:50):
And that's he's good.

Speaker 8 (01:39:51):
But it's also because of Grubs picking up a little
bit of flack and so and Andre, you know, so
that'd be fun if you had Grubs, Ruger Flores sitting
down there as your three pretty good rieties, you know,
and you know that's just trying to put together staff

(01:40:13):
over the course of time and then hopefully we'll knock
on wood would be injury free. But you know, when
you give guys opportunities like that, if somebody does need
a break or something something happens, then you have guys
with some experience.

Speaker 1 (01:40:26):
All right, Now to the fielding and the long Orange
struggled in fielding the other night. Now, to be fair, also,
you had an incredibly windy ballpark, and that even played
to when Easton Windfield was coming over to catch the
ball in left field and had it drop or.

Speaker 3 (01:40:45):
Was it the lights or was it both?

Speaker 8 (01:40:50):
You know, I think that I think he we had
talked about we did fly ball, you know, we did
some pop up practice before the game today, and how
the wind was pushing ball, and talk to him about
when the win's pushing it that way, you can't run
really fast at it because it ends up behind you.
And I think that's what he did. Originally, he was
waiting for the ball to come back to him and

(01:41:11):
the win had died a little bit on that one,
and and then you know he just kind of overran it,
tried to catch it with two hands.

Speaker 9 (01:41:19):
So we got work to do there. But he's a
good player.

Speaker 3 (01:41:22):
He'll be fun, all right.

Speaker 1 (01:41:23):
So extrapolating that out further beyond just the singular nation
of the singular nature of that one specific game, how
does schloss Field about feel about his team's slug his
start in terms of feeling percentage and some of the

(01:41:46):
mistakes they made in the field, not just in the outfield,
but also in the infield, some of the mistakes that
they made early on.

Speaker 8 (01:41:52):
I mean, it's just the fielding percentage is it's not
it's horrible, obviously, but it's it's relative to who's making.

Speaker 9 (01:42:02):
The errors, right. So Jalen's playing awesome.

Speaker 8 (01:42:04):
I mean he had one kick out of his glove
on that fast surface in Vegas. Mendoz's playing great, Shooter's
playing awesome. Gasprino is as good as there is, Ballow's
as good as there is. So I've been on teams
that one year at TCU we had a horrible fielding percentations,
but pitchers made seventeen errors. They're throwing the ball over
the field, so you know, you got to look at
each one individually. Should we be better, for sure, But

(01:42:28):
there's also some really good things in there too than
Ryland's catching awesome, So the you know, fielding percentage doesn't
tell the whole story. But I understand what you're saying
in your offense is.

Speaker 3 (01:42:40):
Yeah. That They went on to talking about the offense
after that.

Speaker 1 (01:42:44):
A couple more from Jim Schlasniegel, one of those being
what he's getting out of his catching position. Rylan Galvan,
of course, is the unquestioned leader behind the plate, and
he's really starting to hit now hit two home work
the other night batting in that nine hole. But his
biggest value, of course is thrown out would be base

(01:43:06):
runners and feeling that position and tough as nails.

Speaker 3 (01:43:10):
Took a.

Speaker 1 (01:43:12):
Foul ball that was close to the most vulnerable part
of a guy's body, if you know what I mean.
But it wasn't quite there was just a little bit
inside on the thigh. Anyway, it was tough, but he
is tough as nails and goes.

Speaker 3 (01:43:26):
Back to work.

Speaker 1 (01:43:27):
So Schloss was asked, what's the importance of the role
behind the plate and how important is the catcher to
this particular long worn team.

Speaker 8 (01:43:39):
I mean, there's never been a good team without a
good catcher. Ever, There's never been a good baseball team
with a bad catchers.

Speaker 9 (01:43:45):
Never been a good baseball team with a bad shortstop.

Speaker 8 (01:43:47):
And so you know, when I got the job here, obviously,
the most important guys to hold on to outside of
Max Blue was the two catchers, which one of them
is playing now playing first base. But Galvon and Flores,
I mean those a big in gas Brando. Those are
the biggest recruits you could possibly have. There's no transfer
portal guys that are going to be better Longhorns than

(01:44:09):
those guys.

Speaker 9 (01:44:10):
So I'm holding onto those.

Speaker 8 (01:44:12):
Guys, and whether it be the draft Jalen or guys
that could transfer massive.

Speaker 9 (01:44:17):
So Ryland, he's so steady and had some good ones
at A and M Jackson.

Speaker 8 (01:44:23):
Appelle, Troy Klantz. Obviously we had awesome catching at TCU
for a long time. On on your on those great teams.

Speaker 1 (01:44:31):
Yeah, I think you guys like Brian Holliday and some
of those other guys he had there at TCU, they
were they were tough behind the plate. But again, Ryland
Galvon pretty pretty dog on solid there as well, and
he mentioned the other guys played first base.

Speaker 3 (01:44:44):
It's Kiball Schuschler. Of course you could catch, but he's
playing first right now for Texas. All right.

Speaker 1 (01:44:48):
Of course, the log Horns play Santa Clara three game
weekend series six point thirty Tomorrow night, two o'clock Saturday,
one o'clock. Someday you'll hear all three games here on
the Zone U Tomorrow six fifteen, airtime, six thirty, first pitch.
We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the program.

Speaker 3 (01:45:05):
I'm thirteen under the Zone.

Speaker 1 (01:45:09):
We had down the home stretch of this one as
we get ready to head toward the weekend. Felt good
to be back in the seat today. You know, we
had a little technically, and for folks who care to know,
sometimes you can have a little bit of those technical

(01:45:29):
challenges when the host is sitting in one chair and
the producer is sitting in another chair. But instead of
eight feet from me, he's eighty miles from me. So,
for being honest with our man, ANDREWS Himmel, he is
running the show from me.

Speaker 2 (01:45:51):
We did a good job today, Craig. Considering everything else,
I thought it was a pretty good.

Speaker 1 (01:45:54):
First time we ever tried this, like this, and yeah,
we just had a little bumper two with something. The
computers that run everything sometimes didn't want to fully cooperate,
so it took a little quick logging back in to
make sure everything worked out.

Speaker 3 (01:46:11):
So it was fine, and it'll and tomorrow, I.

Speaker 1 (01:46:15):
Know you'll be on the host side of it all
the way through, although we're gonna have one segment tomorrow
with me from the ballpark in the three o'clock hour,
and we may have the old grizzled baseball playing coaching
legend Ty Harrington joining me.

Speaker 3 (01:46:36):
Tomorrow in one segment there.

Speaker 1 (01:46:39):
And then, like I said, you'll have Cameron Parker joining
you prior to his call of the Texas women's quarter
final game in the SEC Tournament against the winner of
the game that's going to start in about eight minutes
between Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Winner of that game,
we'll play Texas more afternoon at five o'clock and Cameron

(01:47:02):
will be joined by Kathy Harston for the call of that.
You should know, Zim, that Cameron has safely touched down
in Greenville. Not only has he safely touched down in Greenville,
more importantly, from Cameron's perspective, he has been picked up
from the airport and spirited off to join the team

(01:47:26):
just in time for an early team dinner.

Speaker 3 (01:47:30):
So that's why it's not text me back.

Speaker 1 (01:47:33):
Yeah yeah, so you know, he's he's he's with the
team dinner. So that's that's good. That that's a good thing.
And I sent again, here's a department of true confessions.
I sent Andrew a photo of Cameron Parker
