Speaker 1 (00:00):
Here on this Thursday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
We welcome you so the program here on thirteen hundred
of the Zone. My name is Craig Way. I do
thank you very much for joining us. We have just
a little over half of our daily offering to present
to you today. We'll be with you up until three
forty five, and the reason for that is we're going
to bring you live from Athens, Georgia, Texas softball in

(00:24):
the SEC Tournament quarterfinals, Longhorns will be taking on Old Miss,
the eleventh seed who pulled the surprise beating the sixth
seed Florida yesterday. But the SEC Tournament's already kind of
showing some surprises, like, for example, right now, the five
seed Arkansas leads the four seed Tennessee to nothing.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
That's in the sixth inning in that one.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
That was after Arkansas got the walk off Grand Slam
to win yesterday. So coming up here in just a
couple of minutes, we're gonna check in live with Andrew Haynes,
the voice of Texas long Horns Softball, who will join
us from I think he'll be making his way to
the ballpark there because the way and nobody understands this
better than me folks about booth availability in tournament play,

(01:11):
where you're using a booth, you're going to be broadcasting
from a booth that's currently in use because the earlier
game that's going on. So Andrew will be waiting his
time to get in there. But it looks like it
might work out for him where he'll have a relatively
decent amount of time to get set up and everything.
But he's going to join us by phone here momentarily,
I do have to say this before we get going.

(01:32):
You ask me the producer of courses, Cameron D.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Parker.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
The D the birth certificate stands for Dallas middle name,
as in being named for the pro football team he
cherishes but won't root for right now. But last night
the D stood for delightful because it got a chance,
or maybe Delilah since it was one of his hits.
Lynn and I went to see the iconic Tom Jones

(01:59):
at the ac Hill Moody Theater.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Tom Jones, Cameron.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Parker will turn eighty five next month and he could
still belt out a tune he did. It's not unusual,
and no people did not get up and dance to
Carlton because it was done a little bit differently. He doesn't.
He doesn't have the big brassy section anymore. What he's
got is he had like a regular rock and band.

(02:23):
It was good and so it was kind of done
almost in a Bossa Nova style, but it was good.
He did he did some of his hits. He did Delilah.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
He did do It's not unusual. Uh. He did you
can leave your hat on? He did. He did those.
But but he did some other things.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
He did tunes from Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Dusty Springfield, Prince,
I mean he did. He did several different cats. Stevens
was another one he did. So yeah, and he still
has that great voice. So we had a lot of
fun last night, and I know some other folks went

(02:58):
to as well. And I've had that post hat made
on Facebook. A lot of folks got to that. So anyway,
there was that, and then we could visit a little
more about that later. We do have inconceivable later this hour,
next hour, we'll have a conversation with Bruce Burke, Texas
men's tennis coach. But right now joining us on the

(03:20):
hot line from Georgia, the state of Georgia. Maybe he's
on the drive between say Atlanta and Athens. The voice
of Long Run saw pall Andrew Hayneses on the hot line.
I appreciate the time, Andrew. Are you are you on
site yet? Are you still en route to Athens? Are
you with us there?

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Andrew?

Speaker 4 (03:39):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (03:40):
There you are?

Speaker 5 (03:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (03:42):
I got you?

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Now?

Speaker 4 (03:42):
Got you?

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Now? Are you?

Speaker 4 (03:44):
Are you all right? All right?

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Yeah? Are you in route to Athens?

Speaker 4 (03:49):
I am Yeah.

Speaker 6 (03:49):
We're saying about an hour away from Athens, so it's
a bit of a.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Drive, yick I.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
When Mike White was on with us the other day,
he talked about the being graduation weekend, he said, and
we didn't know about it that at the time things
were booked. But in any event, this is this is
kind of an unusual thing what we've seen so far,
some of the lower lower seeds kind of raising up,
including the opponent, the Longhorns, a team that coach White

(04:16):
told us the other day, you haven't that faced this
season in Ole Miss, So I know it's probably kind
of a fresh look on the one hand, But how
unique is this now in terms of the preparation you
think for Long Worn softball for this Ole Miss team
that they haven't faced this year?

Speaker 6 (04:34):
Yeah, I mean Obviously you're going in assuming Florida being
one of the teams, so one of the top teams
in the country, assuming Florida was going to win that game,
and so hey, you played them three times, we'll go
back to our prep from then. But now you have
to face All Miss and you know they've played a
couple of common opponents. All Miss last weekend lost I
think two or three to Mississippi State and team the

(04:54):
Longhorns took two of three from in Starkville earlier this year,
and so I think it just happened to go back
to the drawing board, especially with only one day. It
was yesterday last night that they won the game, and
so it's a quick all right, let's do some scouting.
And I'm sure they had a little scouting done already,
but just trying to get that information to the players,

(05:14):
and especially with All Missus pitching staff, they have a
lot of different pitchers who have pitched well this year,
so it's probably a little more difficult than normal.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
Happened to adjust on the fly like this.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
I'man curious to ask you something and this and the
reason why I'm asking this particular question because I faced
the exact same question as a broadcast voice coming off
the weekend. We're long worn baseball, which number one in
the country and it not dropped a series to anyone,
either conference or non conference throughout the season. Not only

(05:47):
drops its first conference season, but was swept by Arkansas
Up and Fayetville. So a lot of folks ask me
what happened? What happened? You know, what happened to the
baseball team. And some of it, if we're being completely
honest of it, was pitching. There were thirty one free
passes that Texas pitching allowed during the course of a
three game series sweep loss, twenty two walks, nine hit batters. Yeah, yeah,

(06:10):
that's as Keith Morland likes to say, there's no defense
for the base on balls.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
So there was that. There was a lack of timely hitting.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
There was that, or even a couple of defensive miskips,
not too many. They played pretty well defensively, but anyway,
and then there's one other thing, as that point out,
they played a really good team markets all even went
to number one in a couple of the polls after
the sweep. The number two and a couple other are
a very good team playing in a tough home environment.
The reason why I bring all this up was to

(06:39):
get your rear view mirror view of the series losses
to Tennessee and Oklahoma, which of course was a sweep,
but it looked like the Long Words completely righted the
ship with the sweep of Kentucky. And I think Texas
fans are hoping the baseball team does that against Florida
this weekend and writes the ship on that. But what
was your rear view mirror look back at those two

(07:03):
series before the Long Runes kind of turned it back
around sweeping Kentucky over the past weekend.

Speaker 6 (07:09):
Yeah, you know, I think Tennessee especially was coming off
of honestly a not very difficult schedule up to that point,
and you're facing you know, Carlin Dickens, who this season
has recorded the fastest pitch ever thrown in NCAA softball history,
and you know, the Longhorns hit velocity well, but she
throws a solid four or five six miles an hour

(07:32):
harder regularly than anyone else, and so you just have
to adjust to that. They scored in only one inning
in the game they did win against Tennessee, so I
think just having to face her and it was three
close games. It just happened to adjust from the lesser
Honestly pitching that they had faced up to that point
was a big difference in that one. Oklahoma, you know,

(07:56):
a couple different things. For one, that was at the
end of a stretch which I have mentioned a couple
of times on the broadcast might be the most difficult
stretch faced by any team of the country this season.
They had to face Tennessee LSU, they had a midweek
against Oklahoma State, and then they had three against Oklahoma.
So that's you know, three straight series against top ten

(08:18):
teams with a top fifteen team for a midweek thrown in.
I think Oklahoma, you know, the team was just still
trying to figure out where they were offensively. They struggled
a little bit starting right before the Tennessee series really,
and then against Tennessee they were able to, you know,
get a win. They won two or three against LSU,

(08:38):
but still struggled with the bats, and so I think
against Oklahoma they were still figuring that out. They didn't
start scoring in any game until the fourth thing or later.
One of the big things, of course, was Teaton Cavan
had her maybe two of her three worst games of
her career, and she just something wasn't going right, you know,
she wasn't able to locate a couple of pitches, wasn't

(09:00):
getting some calls, and Oklahoma jumped on the pitches that
she did loky, And so I really think that in
the first game of that series, the Long Horns out
played Oklahoma. Oklahoma scored five of their seven runs in
one inning, and the Longhorns chipped away throughout the game
and they were able to make it force a one
run game, and then in the finale the eight run

(09:20):
comeback was outstanding. So I think I think they really
set the tone at the end of that series, but
they just weren't able to get over the hump. And
what's really disappointing is that where the standings ended up.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
They finished third.

Speaker 6 (09:34):
Had they won one game against Oklahoma, Texas wins the conference.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
Wow, Wow, it was that close as well.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Visiting with Andrew Haynes on his way to call the
Texas quarterfinal game, which we'll have for you live here
on AM thirteen hundred the zone coming up three forty
five as they take on Ole Miss. All right, I
think it's been ten years or somewhere they're abouts when
I got a call. I got to call a long
Horn baseball game where Jake mckinn's he played all nine

(10:02):
positions in one night. Now, that was a Tuesday night
non conference game I think against h U T RGV
at the time. That might have been ut Pan American
at the time.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
That that happened.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
I'd had to go back and dig it up, but
it was somewhere back around that time.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
So I am curious to get your thoughts.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
I asked Mike White about it the other day and
he kind of chuckled about it and said the players
and the and and the assistant coaches were kind of
coming to him and saying, Okay, this is what we're
gonna do with regard to me as Scott playing all
nine positions, I'm curious, uh, as as a broadcaster, did
you know what was coming? And when did you start
to figure out She's going to wind up playing all

(10:39):
nine positions today?

Speaker 6 (10:42):
Yeah? Uh man, that was that was a fun day.
I had no clue.

Speaker 4 (10:47):
I hadn't.

Speaker 6 (10:48):
Apparently Mike didn't even know about it until the first
inning of the game. And uh, you know, so when
I did the pregame interview with him, and asked, Hey,
any defensive changes, any lineup. So he's like, we'll throw
the seniors in there for their starts and Senior Day
and outside of that, you know, nothing really and so
I don't think he really truly had an idea until
they got down to the dugout and got that the

(11:08):
game started. And you know, honestly, four years of doing
minor league baseball, four plus years and nine years of
doing this, never seen a player do that for the
team I'm calling for or for another team.

Speaker 4 (11:20):
So it was it was fun trying.

Speaker 6 (11:22):
To explain all of that throughout the game. After Mia
in the second inning switched over to shortstop, I noted that,
and I think after that half inning, the Longhorns SID
Chris Brown comes over and says, hey, scuttle Bud is
that they're going to play me at all nine positions,
and so I'm like, all right, And you know, by

(11:43):
the time he came over to tell me that they
were up three to nothing, they were about to go
up ten nothing. So hey, you got to get nine
positions in five innings for the run role in softball,
and so I was I was skeptical that they were
going to get her to all nine positions, honestly, but.

Speaker 4 (12:00):
They made it work.

Speaker 6 (12:00):
They did second base and first base in the third inning,
and all three outfield.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
Positions in the fourth, and.

Speaker 6 (12:07):
Man, she showed that she is truly a utility player,
catching and then getting it out in the circle, and
so that was just a ton of fun. I'm certainly
going to dig into it a little bit more with
Mike in the pregame interview before today's game.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
No doubt.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
All right, I want to ask you one other thing,
because I know you've got to get to the ballpark.
You busy, but I want I want to ask you
something else.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Again.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
I'm drawing some comparisons with what's going on with Long
Horn Baseball in Saltpaul, because they're both ranked in the
top five and they're both trying to lock down top
eight national seeds. Do you think the Longhorns have locked
in a top eight national seed regardless of what happens
in Athens or do they need a win or two?

Speaker 4 (12:52):
Yeah, that's tough to say.

Speaker 6 (12:54):
I feel like overall with the resume with being I mean,
the RPI is right around eight. I think they're number
nine coming into today, so that could hurt them just
because of the non.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
Conference strength of schedule.

Speaker 6 (13:07):
But listening to a couple different softball podcasts where some
different people make guesses at the seating, one of them
had Texas's lowest number eight last week, and a couple other.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Had four and five, I think they're okay.

Speaker 6 (13:21):
If things go terribly wrong against Mississippi, it could damage
that chance. But overall, Texas has I think the most
top twenty five wins in the country. They have a
lot of top ten wins. They have no bad losses period,
so I think they are pretty well set up where
the RPI and the non conference strength of schedule isn't

(13:44):
going to hurt that bad because of everything else they've done.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
All right, Andrew Haynes will be on the call as
always for Texas Softball. Loghorns will take on Ole miss
the Rebels three forty five pre games start time four
o'clock with the first pitch. Andrew, I appreciate the time.
Have a great weekend in Athens. Best of luck to
the ball club as well.

Speaker 4 (14:03):
All right, thanks Rady.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
All right, that's Andrew Haynes, and again we'll bring it
to you live at three forty five here on the zone.
Andrew will have the call here on Am thirteen under
the Zone, three forty five, with the pregame start time
and the first pitch scheduled for four o'clock Texas time.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
As.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Texas will be taking on Ole Miss first, unusual in
that it's the first time they'll have faced the Rebels
this season, but they'll they'll look to see and then
and then if they win that game, then there's a
good chance they might wind up playing Texas A and
M in the semis semi finals. And then if they

(14:45):
win that, then there's a pretty decent chance they'll see
Oklahoma and the championship.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
All I mean, with Arkansas going the way that we won't,
who knows on that. We'll keep you. We'll update you
on that coming up.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
We've got some other topics to get to when we
continue here on this Thursday afternoon.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
I'm thirteen under the Zone.

Speaker 7 (15:08):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
All right, thanks again to Andrew Haynes joining us here
for a preview of today's matchup that he will bring
to you. Texas Softball in the SEC Tournament in the
quarterfinal round against Old Miss again. The first pitch coming
up a little over an hour and a half from now,
and it'll be a three forty five pre game start time. Okay,
first thing I want to do is give you a chance,

(15:54):
if you're interested, to win a pair of tickets to
see Al Cooper and Judas Priest. Are you a fan
of either? I for Judas loves them. Really, Your dad is.
He's an interesting dude.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
He is. He is again, he is.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
And you know who else likes real, heavy duty, hard
driving rock and roll. Keith Morland a little bit. Keith
actually did go uh. He tells this great story about
how when he had just signed his major league contract
after Texas had won the nineteen seventy five National Championship

(16:36):
in baseball, Keith is drafted by the Phillies. He winds
up signing with the Phillies and they send him to
I believe it was in the Carolina League, but I
think I'm in fact, I'm pretty sure it was to
play for the Spartanburg Phillies. And they're playing the Winston

(16:58):
Salem Red Sox at Old Ernie shore Field there in
Winston sale And so he's sent there and he arrives
and plays in his first ever professional game minor league game,
gets done with it, plays the game. This is nineteen

(17:19):
seventy five, plays in the game, they get done with
the game, and.

Speaker 1 (17:22):
His teammates kind of welcome him out of that.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
I think he got a hit or two or something
like that, and then his teammates said, all right, you're
coming with us, and they take him to what's I
think you're probably familiar with it, Bowman Gray Stadium, which
was the old NASCAR track. In fact, NASCAR ran a
race there last year, the old NASCAR track there, So
it's kind of like Bristol, about a half mile track

(17:45):
and they play a lot of football there. My high
school played a very important football game and lost my
senior year there at Bowmant Gray Stadium. But they take
him there to see to see see if I can
remember them all now, Marshall tuck Band, I think, zz
Top and Leonard Skinnard. I think I think it was

(18:06):
those three there. And strange how the connections come back
around my two older brothers. Of course, I was going
up in Greensboro. It's up twenty five miles away. My
two older brothers were at that show. That day, that evening,
and they pointed out that the Hell's Angels were there
trying to quote unquote keep the peace as ushers and

(18:26):
there was a big fight broke out and all this
other kind of stuff. So Keith, to answer your question,
does appreciate hard driving rock and roll?

Speaker 7 (18:32):
No?

Speaker 2 (18:32):
The guy I was referring to, he was Ty Harrington,
you know, Okay, you know? And and Ty is going
to join me from the booth tomorrow at UFCU dish
faulk Field to a preview not only of the matchup,
because tis going to be working the telecasts on Saturday
and Sunday on SEC Network Plus of Texas against Florida.

(18:54):
So he will you'll weigh in with that, but we'll
talk about the national college baseball scene as well.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
But right now, I.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Wanted to give somebody an opportunity to win a pair
of tickets to see Alice Cooper and Judas Priest. The
show is in October, October twenty fifth at Jermaia Insurance Amphithea.
That's out thereak Cota, and here's how you can register
to win, have a shot to win. If you don't
already have the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your smartphone. What

(19:27):
are you waiting for? It's free, it's easy, very easy
to do. You just download that. Then what you do
is you search AM thirteen under the zone. There's two
buttons on it. There's a white one that's in the
shape of an arrow, and then there's a red button
with a white microphone in the middle of it. You
tap that button, the one with the red microphone, and
then you just leave us a message because that connects

(19:48):
you to our talk back feature. And you can leave
us a message up to thirty seconds, and it have
to be thirty seconds, to be five seconds, ten seconds, whatever,
up to thirty but you have to mention in there. Hey,
I heard Craig talking about winning tickets to see Alice
Cooper and Judas Priest and here's the keyword. So here's
today's keyword. Nice, nice as in Alice Cooper. No more,

(20:12):
mister nice guy. I'm sure, I'm sure that's what that's
all about. Because you have different ones, you know, So
like yesterday it was school as in schools out by
Alice Cooper. So nice is today's keyboard. So you just
leave us that message and you're automatically entered into the
drawing for the tickets on that. So that's what you

(20:33):
have to do, all right, hockey, you have to be
pumped up. Dallas Stars getting that critical road wind to
open the series against the top seed, the Winnipick Jets.
Not only do they do that, cam they get yet
another hat trick from Miko Ranzenden, another one, a natural
hat trick, No last Why.

Speaker 1 (20:54):
Was he traded twice this year?

Speaker 3 (20:56):
I'm trying to understand why Miko was traded because he's
playing like the best player in hockey right now. I
know you said Austin Matthews from Maple Leafs. I probably
would have sent me Jesus before that, But right.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
Now now Randon's playing better than anybody.

Speaker 3 (21:06):
He has scored or assisted on in the last twelve
goals in the playoffs. That's a record, the second longest
streak Lemieux at eight. So Rantonon is in exclusive history.
Not even the greatest one ever Retzki or the MoU
have ever done, right, So that's incredible.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
It's the first ever natural hat trick.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
And for folks who don't know whether natural hat trick
is not, only is it three goals? I you know
my wife, I love her because she's really into getting
into sports. Being with me, I guess she probably didn't
have much choice, but she's really But we were watching
the other night and I was talking about the hat trick.
She goes, now, what's a hat trick again? And so
you see all those people throwing hats on the ice.

(21:47):
There you go, I said, it goes back an old
hockey lore of people throwing hats on them. It was
kind of like when I was at Tom Jones last night,
women were throwing their underwear on the stake.

Speaker 1 (21:55):
Really, yes, it happened.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
It happened, and had somebody jokingly said, hey, did you
know was it?

Speaker 1 (22:03):
You know? What did Did.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
Women throw their underwear on the stage like they used
to in the late sixties and early seventies, Yes, they did.
The undergarment count was at five. I think there were
four sets of panties and one bra that landed on
the stage. So yeah, that and that was that was
the tradition when people women went to see Tom Jones.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
That happened.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
So but in the NHL hat trick, you throw your
hat onto the ice. A natural hat trick is you
just score three goals in secession. There's nothing else in between.
It there's no other goals in between it, so it's
a natural hat trick one, two, three. It's kind of
like a a what do you call it, a naturally
I don't think natural is the right word, but you

(22:49):
I'll say it for a natural cycle. A sequential cycle
when you have in baseball where the guy hits a single,
then a double, then a triple then a home run.
Cycles are rare enough in baseball, but to get it
in sequence like that is exceeding rare. But in anyway,
in any case, amazing for the Stars to do that

(23:10):
and held on for dear life to get game one
in Winnipeg, So that was important. We were talking yesterday
how they're gonna have to get at least one and
maybe more because of how good the Jets are. But
that's a heck of that. We got home last night
from showing time to watch the third period of it,
and it was high intensity stuff like it usually is

(23:31):
in the NHL.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
Yeah, the last like four minutes of a hockey game
when one team is up and the other team is
just desperate for a goal and they're just you know,
pelting the goalkeeper with shots, which happened last night in
the third period where Winnipeg was throwing everything at Odingser
and I can't believe they did not score. There was
that one sequence where he made like four or five saves,

(23:53):
he lost his stick, he lost his glove and you know,
he could have got maybe his bare hand on it,
which is obviously not ideal, but prevented Winnipeg from equalizing
and Dallas went on the win. So that was an
incredible performance from Addinger last night. One of the best
playoff performances obviously, Ranson and we just read through the
stat Also, back to back games with the hat trick.

(24:14):
We were the first person to do that since Ovechkin,
maybe the greatest, second greatest goal scorer of all times.
Also the first player nearly forty years in the third
ever sorry, first player in Dallas Stars in North Stars
history to produce a natural hat trick and playoffs. I
think already said that before. He's just fantastic. He's been huge.
And again Game two is gonna be tough. You know,

(24:37):
you probably put your your money on Winnipeg, but Dallas
does need a little bit more I think out of
you know, the veteran guys, Jamie Benn obviously Robertson just
coming back so they can get some more production out
of those guys. You feel really good, but it does
end in eight game losing streak. In Game one for
the Dallas Stars got to I finally won a Game.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
One, broke through the glass ceiling on that.

Speaker 2 (24:59):
The My hope still continues of a Dallas Stars Carolina
Hurricane Stanley Cup final. I have hope since the Canes
won Game one on the road of Washington. They have
Game two of that tonight. But even if they win that,
I don't see him beating Toronto. Toronto just looks too
strong in the East. But I'd love to see the

(25:21):
Stars get there as well. Didn't Arkansas sawtball win on
a walk off Grand Slam yesterday?

Speaker 1 (25:30):
They did, Yeah, this.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
Wasn't a walk off, but in the top of the
seventh they got another Grand Slam.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
This time he gets Tennessee.

Speaker 2 (25:37):
They're up six to one on the Lady Vall softball
team as they bat with two outs on the top
of that. Looks like Arkansas, the number five seed, is
going to pull another lower seeded victory in this tournament
and knockout Tennessee, and then we'll see what happens to
get the semifinals in dealing with Oklahoma. Texas of course
comes up just inside a ninety minute. It's from now

(26:01):
Texas and Ole Miss, and we'll have it for you
right here live on the Zone. Andrew Haynes, we'll have
the call up next. We're going to bring you inconceivable.
Let me tell you what is not inconceivable. It is
great service from my friends at Leif Johnson Ford because

(26:22):
they have been providing service for oh close to sixty years.
I've bought vehicles from Leif Johnson. I've been proud to
be an endorser of them. If you are interested in
having me endorse your product or service, you can just
send me an email Craig Way at iHeartMedia dot com.
Inconceivables up next on thirteen hunderd the Zone, second hour

(26:43):
of the program. Here on thirteen hundred of the Zone,
because we're going to bring it to you live. Texas
Softball from the SEC Tournament. The Longhorns, number three seed
taking on the eleven seed the Old Miss Rebels who
knocked out the sixth seed Florida yesterday.

Speaker 1 (27:00):
It'll be interesting.

Speaker 2 (27:02):
As you heard Andrew Haynes talking about in the first
hour of the program. If you were with us right
at the start, right out of the gates, it'll be
the first time they will have faced hole miss This year,
they were not on the schedule, so there's something different
about that. So anyway, that'll be coming up at three
forty five. Now, coming up in a few minutes, conversation

(27:25):
with Bruce Burke, Texas men's tennis coach as they play
in the Sweet sixteen of the NCAA Ternemy. You realize
it's been eleven consecutive years that the Longhorn men's tennis
team has reached at least the sweet sixteen round eleven

(27:45):
straight years. I used to think that like the incredible
record that would probably never be broken when I was
growing up North Carolina and even after I moved to Texas,
was that North Carolina went to thirteen straight sweet sixteen.
But I think Duke has broken that record since then.
I think I'm not one hundred percent certain about that,
but in any event, it's it's it's quite a remarkable accomplishment.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
And they'll they'll be in action to.

Speaker 2 (28:16):
Take on the Tennessee volunteers and so you know, you
never really can get too far away from the sec right,
because Tennessee is pretty good. So anyway, there is.

Speaker 4 (28:30):
That.

Speaker 1 (28:30):
Now.

Speaker 2 (28:31):
We did not get a chance to get into this
in the first hour of the program, but I am
kind of curious to get your thoughts on this camera. Okay,
so your Oaklhom City Thunder, the team you root for,
got even and then some Denver beat them by forty
three points last night, one forty nine to one or six.

(28:52):
And incidentally, for anybody who was superstitious about those Loves
Truck Stop uniforms that were wearing the black ones with
the yellow and the red trim, they had some blue
in there too, but it was mainly the primary colors
were black, yellow and red in that uniform, which is
of course the color of their sponsor, Loves the the
cowls on there. They'll never convince me otherwise that that

(29:13):
wasn't because the Loves Truck stopped. But in any event,
so they that got even with that. I know you
had some concerns as a fan. We always have concerns
about our teams. As a fan.

Speaker 1 (29:23):
You feel better about it now, a lot better.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
That's how okay See should have played in Game one
of this series, A little tight in that first game
and they led by fourteen. They didn't play bad, they
just played They didn't play as aggressive as they usually
had in the regular season, while we saw that last night.
From from tip off to the very end, they just
completely bombasted the Denver Nuggets. And the Nuggets just did
not look like they cared to.

Speaker 1 (29:45):
Be there at all.

Speaker 3 (29:46):
And you know, maybe the wear and tear from the
first round finally caught up to them in Game two.
But I mean, okay, see, what eighty seven points in
the first half a playoff record. They led by over
forty points at times in that game. I mean, sja
was was phenomenal, eleven to thirteen from the floor, thirty
three points, eleven eleven at the free throw stripe, and

(30:09):
no one had a bad game at all for okay see,
and that just attestament to their depth. And on the
Denver side, I mean Jokic, you know, he put up
his numbers, but you know, he was a complete non
factor in the first half. I thought, okayc was was
really aggressive offending him, and Aaron Gordon had some postgame
comments saying that he was getting fouled every play and
the referees weren't calling it and you know in the

(30:30):
first half, you know he true. I would think you
know about five or six fouls. But okay, see just
every possession. You know, understanding the impact that Yokis has
on the game, and if the referees are gonna let
him play little more physical, then you know, credit okc
for playing more physical. And whether or not that's the
reason why Denver lost by forty points, I don't think so.

(30:51):
You lose by forty points, there's other reasons besides the
other team shutting down Yokic.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
Here's the number. I like the thunder out score. This
is funny. I was confident I had it all right.
The Thunder outscored the Nuggets by fifty one point. They
won by forty three. They outscored the Nuggets by fifty
one points in the thirty minutes that Shay Gildess Alexander

(31:18):
played SGA played thirty minutes, and during that time, the
plus minus was a plus fifty one. If you're relatively
new to the plus minus, if you don't know what
that is, I think it's a pretty telling stat and
basketball adopted it starting in the late nineties. Pro basketball
did where it tracks how the team does when you're

(31:43):
on the floor and when you're off the floor, and
it's a plus minus.

Speaker 1 (31:47):
It's as simple as that did it.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
If the team picked up eight total points in the
time you were off the floor, then your plus minus
was a plus eight. If your team dropped four points
in the time you were off the floor, then they
were a minus four. Conversely, if the team was like
minus four while you were on the floor, that's not
so good. If they if they were outscored while you

(32:10):
were on the floor, that's the thing. Well, Sga was
on the floor thirty minutes. Shay Gilders, Alexander Sga is
anyone the Thunder during that time that he was on
the floor outscored the Nuggets by fifty one points. That
is the best plus minus in a playoff game ever,
or at least the best since that statistic began to

(32:34):
be tracked back in the ninety seven to ninety eight seasons,
So since they started tracking that, no man has ever
had a plus minus a plus fifty one, which just
goes to show what it's out.

Speaker 1 (32:46):
I think he's the MVP of the league this year.
I really do.

Speaker 3 (32:48):
He was phenomenal offensively, defensively in the entire game, and
he did it all in basically three quarters, you know,
Okay it I think that the teenth time he's over
thirty points this season, and that might be actually more.
I might have the stat wrong, but that's what he's
done so well this season. And for OKAC to get

(33:10):
to the NBA Championship, they need Shade to the perform
like that every game.

Speaker 1 (33:14):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (33:15):
So that was the result we all expected to happen.
I think anybody who's watched the NBA this year, who's
watched Oklahoma City this year, who's watched the playoffs up
to this point, expected Oka See to play well and
probably win in lopsided fashion. Maybe not by forty three,
but certainly expected them to win in one sided fashion.

(33:41):
What was not expected was that the New York Knicks
would recover again from a twenty point deficit at Boston
to come back and beat the Celtics. Unreal the way
the Knicks turned that around, and of course I didn't
get to see it. It was a made reference to

(34:04):
last Hour of Lyndon. I went to see Tom Jones
and all that, and we talked about that last hour.
But it it's just amazing that the Knicks could turn
that around, down twenty points for a second straight game
and beat Boston in Boston. So now the series shifts

(34:25):
to Madison Square Garden, where, in case you're wondering what
the ticket demand is on this, the cheapest ticket today
ranged anywhere from six hundred twenty six dollars on stub
Hub to seven ninety five on tick Pick. That's to
get in the building. And Cam you've been in the garden,

(34:46):
you know what it's like. Way up top, You're way
up to that's to get those seats. The nose bleeds
at least six hundred and twenty six bucks, all the
way up to eight hundred dollars, that kind of thing.
Can you imagine what it was what it'd be like
to sit down close for that thing, not Spike Lee seats,
but certainly just even in the lower seating bowl on this.
So now it's a frenzy in the Big Apple. They're

(35:09):
they're licking their chops thing. It's going to take out Boston.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
Now the garden's going to be electric for games three
and four. And there was a great conversation on inside
the NBA last night between Shack and Chuck that I
thought was very interesting because now New York's, you know,
up to nothing, They're going back to the Garden. You
kind of feel like, okay, it's a must win for Boston.
But for Shaq and Chuck, their point was actually, no, no, no,

(35:35):
it's a must win for the Knicks. Because you let
Boston win Game three, all of a sudden, the pressure
goes back to New York and the last thing you
want is to go back to Boston.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
Game five and the series tied up too and two.

Speaker 3 (35:46):
And Chuck talked about two different times in his playoff
career where he was up to nothing and he ended
up losing games you know, three and four because of
the pressure after losing Game three, And there was times
where they were down O two to the Lakers and
they won Game three and said, hey, the pressure's on
them and the Lakers now, and they won Game four
and even at the series. So for it's interesting, but

(36:08):
I think it's a great point. Now all the pressures
on Boston. But New York, you know, we have not
seen the Knicks contend like this and have a team
they thought they could actually win the NBA Championship. I
don't think since probably nineteen ninety nine. So I'm excited
to see what the garden will be like. I understand,
I really do. I understand their perspective. I don't know

(36:29):
that I necessarily agree with it. Here's what I'm looking at.
You know what I'm looking at Game six.

Speaker 2 (36:36):
What I think is going to happen is I think
the Celtics are going to come out hair on fire.
They've got to They're going to be SGA pointed out
for Oklahoma City, he said, we were desperate. Clearly, the
Celtics will play desperate, and they're still an incredible team.
We've seen them to do it, and so I don't

(36:58):
see them dropping game three.

Speaker 1 (37:00):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (37:00):
So then you say, well, if you're New York, you
gotta win game four at home.

Speaker 1 (37:04):
I agree with that. You gotta get You got to one.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
Out of two at home, So you're up three to
one going back to Boston, probably not gonna win in
game five. So all roads lead back to Game six
at Madison's Square Garden. If the Knicks are going to
pull this upset off, they need to get two home wins.
It doesn't necessarily have to be games three and four.
It could be four and six or three and six,

(37:26):
but they're gonna have to do that because I think
I think they've spent their chips on getting road wins.

Speaker 1 (37:31):
I got be wrong.

Speaker 2 (37:32):
They've won two in a row in Boston, and what
was it that Jalen Brunson said last We'd rather not
do it that way down twenty points, but they have.

Speaker 1 (37:42):
So that part is just absolutely amazing.

Speaker 2 (37:45):
So tick pick announced today when its lowest get in
price was seven hundred and six dollars, that it was
the most expensive Knicks ticket on record. That's that's how
that is. So, so there is that. Okay, So then
the other two series you've You've got the t Wolves

(38:07):
and the Warriors meeting tonight in Minnesota. Now, I do
think that it probably is must win for Minnesota. You
you drop your first two and home to Golden State.
I don't think they can survive that deal Golden I
think Boston can't. I don't think Minnesota can if they
drop to in a row. Now, some of that's also
going to depend on Steph Curry's health.

Speaker 3 (38:28):
Yeah, and his prognosis is not great right now. He
talked about today, He has no idea when he's going
to come back. Does not want to rush it. It's
a hamstring injury, and for a player like him final
for him to be one hundred percent even at you know,
fifty sixty percent, that's an injury that it's really hard
to play through in to try and plan an elite

(38:48):
level like Steph Curry. So for Minnesota, I don't know
if Golden State will be able to have enough offense
for four quarters to be able to win Game two.
And I can't imagine Minnesota is starting off of shooting
as poorly as they did in Game one. I can't
imagine Anthony Edward's going zero for ten again to start
the game. Could be wrong, but Minnesota for sure has

(39:09):
to take Game two, all right.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
And then of course Cleveland, Indiana pick up again tomorrow,
and Cleveland in the desperate situation having to go to
Indianapolis down to zip all right. Up next, we talk
Texas men's tennis. They're headed for the Sweet sixteen. They're
going to host Tennessee noon Saturday, And at my suggestions,
you go to the tennis match, get up there in
those top roads, then turn around. I'll at Wrigleyfield and

(39:33):
watch the baseball game afterwards. I think that's the best
way to do it. We'll visit with Bruce Burke, the
Longhorn men's tennis coach, coming up next on thirteen Under
the Zone. We continue on this Thursday afternoon, getting you
ready for another weekend, a big weekend of University of
Texas athletics on so many levels, so many fronts, and
that includes the number three Texas men's tennis team in

(39:54):
the NCAA Sweet Sixteen after beating Cornell on Sunday in
the second round of the NCAA tournament at the t
Texas Tennis Center. Eleven consecutive years that long, Warns have
reached at least the round of sixteen, and they're going
to play Tennessee the fourteen seat on Saturday at noon
at the Texas Tennis Center, and it'll be the third

(40:14):
meeting between these teams.

Speaker 1 (40:16):
And say, we'll get to that.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
In a moment, but I want to welcome head coach
Bruce Burk to the program.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
I appreciate the time, Bruce.

Speaker 2 (40:21):
I always hear about how excited the student athletes are,
So I got to put it to you, how excited
do you get? Do you still get really amped up
at this time of year with a Sweet sixteen matchup
at hand?

Speaker 4 (40:35):
I do, for sure.

Speaker 5 (40:36):
I do. I've been doing this for a long time.

Speaker 8 (40:38):
But it's a great part of this job is to
be living through one of the best years of players'
lives and we get to do it over and over again.
So yeah, I share their excitement for sure.

Speaker 2 (40:52):
I know we talked about this before, but I think
it's worth repeating. Just about every coach that I work
with or interview or talk to talks about the importance
of getting the fast start or the quick start or
a positive start.

Speaker 1 (41:08):
And you did that last Sunday.

Speaker 2 (41:10):
You got the six three wins at the three and
one with the doubles point there as well. Is it
also equally important for your group, even though it's extrapolated
out over time and you got to do enough to
get to the four points to win it, but to
get the jump like you did from doubles, how important
is that?

Speaker 5 (41:28):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (41:28):
It is.

Speaker 8 (41:28):
It's a tricky thing because you don't want to say
that if you never want to say to the team
that it's overstressed the importance because then you know inevitably
you're going to lose the doubles point sometime, and then
you know you want the players to feel sense of calm.

Speaker 5 (41:41):
So what I.

Speaker 8 (41:42):
Communicate to them, and I have been doing this for
many years, is that you want to play the doubles
point like it's the thing that matters most in the
world at that time, and you play like it with
a lot of urgency and as if it's very important.
And then when it's done, win or lose, you play
as if it were the least it's important thing in
the world, which is true because it is only one

(42:03):
point out of seven total.

Speaker 5 (42:05):
But we all know that if you win the doubles.

Speaker 8 (42:07):
Point, then all you have to do is split the
six singles matches to win the duels. So it's kind
of I try to walk both sides of the fence
a little bit, but it is true.

Speaker 1 (42:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (42:16):
Well, and then and it usually kind of dovetails when
you have senior leadership and having Pierre e Bay leading
you at you know, along with a really talented freshman
and Sebastian ericson the mixture. West workout really well when
you've got senior leadership and talent along with freshman talent
as well to make for a good combination.

Speaker 5 (42:38):
Yeah, it is. It's a good mix.

Speaker 8 (42:39):
This year, it's a good mix of some younger guys
who are just getting started, some older guys who maybe
haven't done it that much, and then a guy like
Pierre who's been rock solid for four years. And yeah,
I think it's a good group to where you've got
it to put together this year.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
Let me get your thoughts on in review of looking
at the singles matches coming out of that to help
secure the victory, what impressed you most about you guys.

Speaker 8 (43:05):
You know that just continue to do what they've done
all year, which is just stay focused and locked in
on their court and trying to play to the standard
that we're.

Speaker 5 (43:15):
Trying to get to as a team.

Speaker 8 (43:16):
So it's not Yeah, of course the Ultimate were the
most present goals to win the duel match, but they're
also competitive to their own standards and it's about pursuing
excellence and trying to become the best team we can
be at the end of the year. So we do
have a chance to win the Ultimate Prize. But no,
I think our guys played pretty good tennis. We're starting
to get a little more healthy, which is fantastic. We

(43:37):
had Lucas Brown be able to step in and play
singles for the first time in a better month, and
he held up really well and played some good tennis,
so I felt like it was a good step in
the right direction.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
Well, youah addressed one thing I was going to ask
you about Lucas. Then of course we've talked about Temo
Lagu many times and what he does for you, and
he continues to be a real bell weather for you,
doesnty no doubt.

Speaker 5 (43:59):
I mean, he's got to.

Speaker 8 (44:01):
It's got to be one of the best performances by
a freshman in college tennis in the history of college tennis.
He's been He's been arguably the best player in college
tennis all year.

Speaker 5 (44:11):
He's ranked number one in the country.

Speaker 8 (44:13):
And you know, he's he's a little older, so he's
more more mature than the typical freshman. But for him
to do what he's done in his first year of
playing experiences has been really tremendous. And you know, of course,
when you have we had the number one player in
the country for the last two years in las Zieri,

(44:33):
and then Michael Braswell was number two.

Speaker 5 (44:36):
And and for one week it was number one.

Speaker 8 (44:38):
You lose those two guys and you think, man, and
how are you gonna how you're going to replace that?
And here comes Timo who's been every bit as good.

Speaker 5 (44:46):
It's been fortunate for us.

Speaker 2 (44:48):
Well, you mentioned Michael Brass I was going to ask
about the Oether Brass, I was going to ask you
about Jonah because of the mindset of players, and we've
talked about this before the uh what you know when
a guy like Jonah is in him match and drops
the first set and is at two five, they're in
the second and then the course play concluded on that,

(45:08):
how much of a teaching element is that for you
and for him? And looking back at it even though
the match was not concluded because everything had been clinched
by then. Before getting ready for the Sweet sixteen against Tennessee.

Speaker 8 (45:20):
Yeah, you know, Jonah is always giving it as He's
always giving it his best, and he's always going to
take He's always going to take a careful look at
the match and to figure out how what he needs
to do better. The great thing about Jonah is, you
know in tennis, as sets it up and down sports,
there's wins and losses, and there's blown leads and missed
opportunities and great moments of victory. No matter how bad

(45:43):
it would ever get, for Jonah, nothing will shake his confidence.
And I know he'll be back the next time, and
he's he's going to learn from it and then kind
of flush it and be ready for the next one.

Speaker 2 (45:53):
Visiting with Bruce Burg, Texas men's tennis coach. Here for
a couple more minutes here and again It's Saturday at
noon a Texas Tennis Center. There. It should make for
a very exciting Saturday. Okay, here it is Tennessee. And
you could ever, really, I guess, get too far away
from SEC because of the conference and the strength of
the conference and in football and in basketball and in
baseball about every other sport. When we talk about the

(46:15):
third meeting in the first two were split, we always
talk about the term is the rubber match.

Speaker 1 (46:20):
Well, it truly is a rubber match.

Speaker 2 (46:23):
As you and Tennessee had gotten together, Valls took the
match in Knoxville, the last match of the regular season,
and then you turned around in your group one in
the semifinals with the SEC championship. Is this the case
of the devil, you know, because they know your group
and you know their group, and then it kind of

(46:44):
boils down to execution on this thing.

Speaker 8 (46:47):
Yeah, I think so, for sure. There would be a
lot of the same matchups. There might be a couple
of different matchups, but it'll be largely the same.

Speaker 5 (46:54):
They definitely know us.

Speaker 8 (46:55):
We each have video of all the matches, so yeah,
there won't be any surprises.

Speaker 5 (47:00):
We know that. You know, one thing about Tennessee is
they're super.

Speaker 8 (47:03):
Competitive and uh, they're going to fight to the end.
So if we find a way to get through, we're
gonna feel good known that we earned it, because it's
certainly not going to be given to us.

Speaker 2 (47:12):
First, what's your biggest concern about the volunteers and what
they bring into this.

Speaker 8 (47:17):
Well, they're really good at the top of the lineup,
and we are too, but they Tiamos won both matches
against the opponent at number one, but the last match
he had to save match point and the previous one
he was down in the third set. Also, so that
that guy is one of Alex Cosin is one of
the few players that are definitely capable of beating Timo.
So they're good at one and two. Their number two

(47:39):
guy is a very experienced player and he's very talented players.
So they're good at the top. They're good in doubles.
We've lost the doubles point both times against them.

Speaker 5 (47:49):
So far. They're especially good.

Speaker 8 (47:50):
At the top of the lineup in doubles, So I
think they're top the top of the lineup in doubles,
the top of the lineup in singles, and then their
fight throughout.

Speaker 5 (47:58):
That's that's what makes them good.

Speaker 2 (48:00):
Last thing I want to ask you is about that
for folks who don't realize this, and this is again,
this is a topic that we've we've hit on before,
the importance of the boost that your guys get from
an excited home crowd and to be playing on your
home court. Since you haven't played these guys on your

(48:22):
home court. You had to play them in Oxville, and
you had to play them in Columbia, and now you
get them on your home court. How important is it
to have a big turnout of excited Texas fans to
see your group take on a really good Tennessee team
here in the Sweet sixteen.

Speaker 8 (48:37):
Yeah, that's I'm really glad you asked that question, because
we our guys love showcasing their talent and their their
culture and their teamwork, and they just enjoyed playing with
playing in front of Longhorn fans and it would give
us a tremendous boost. This is this is the last
opportunity we have to play home for the season. We've

(48:58):
been undefeated so far, and that's going to be under
serious threat this weekend. We've had several good, big crowds
the last couple of years where the place is literally full,
and we're expecting and hoping for the same kind of
environment this time. I do suggest that people who come
come a little bit early. The match starts at noon,
but I would suggest you get here closer to eleven
thirty or eleven forty five to get a good seat,

(49:21):
because I do think there's a good chance we could
have an overflow crowd this time, especially with all the
people on campus for graduation later that evening. Then, of
course the baseball game that starts at one. I think
a great thing for folks to do would be to
come out and get a taste of the tennis match.

Speaker 5 (49:35):
If they're planning on going.

Speaker 8 (49:36):
To baseball, which starts at noon, watch the Doubles get
into that, and when they feel like it's time to
move on to baseball, they can either go upstairs to
the top and watch the baseball game you get a
clear view of the fields from our stadium, or move
on to the baseball game, but I think to be
there for the beginning of the match, even a little earlier,
especially for the doubles which starts to match, is the

(49:58):
most exciting part of the match.

Speaker 5 (50:01):
That would give our team a massive lift.

Speaker 2 (50:02):
Yeah, that's the beauty of the thing, is I see it, Bruce,
because I remember when you've had some teams hosting big
matches in NCAA tournament play and there was a day
baseball game seeing those fans turn around from the upper
seats and they've got a great bird's eye view. And
with baseball starting an hour later at one o'clock and
your match starting at noon, hey, they can kind of
get the best of both worlds on this deal.

Speaker 8 (50:24):
Yeah. I mean, if you haven't seen it from the
top of tennis to him, it's a great view of
the baseball game, So you could you could easily watch.

Speaker 5 (50:33):
Both for a while.

Speaker 8 (50:34):
But definitely, of course, we'd love people to stay as
long as they can, but if they've committed to watching baseball,
there's a way to do both.

Speaker 5 (50:40):
And I don't think anyone who comes out to watch
this match is going to be disappointed.

Speaker 8 (50:44):
And if you haven't been to a college tennis match,
yet at ut this is the one to come to.

Speaker 1 (50:49):
No doubt about.

Speaker 2 (50:50):
It's Texas against Tennessee NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Again, it's noon
on Saturday at the Texas Tennis Center.

Speaker 1 (50:57):
And again, yeah, if you had plans.

Speaker 2 (50:58):
To take in the baseball game, just get in those
upper seats and turn around and you know, kind of
play it like it's Wriggley feel. It's a it's a
it's a great a great vantage pointing Bruce. As always,
I greatly appreciate the time
