Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Good afternoon, everybody,
welcome to the program. My name is Craig Wait. Glad
to have you with us here on this Wednesday afternoon.
I did the math on it. It is the first
time in twenty eight days that Cameron D. Parker the
D on the birth certificate standing for Dallas as in

(00:21):
his favorite pro football team. That's a training camp right now,
and he had to kind of grit his teeth as
he was slicing and dicing through the Jerry Jones press
conference and Brian Schottenneimer sound. We'll hear some of that
coming up. But it's the first time the D does
stand for Dallas. But back in the studio and we're

(00:44):
in the big, big studio here this afternoon here in
the iHeart Compound.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Twenty eight days now.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
We were around each other for three days in Atlanta
last week at SEC Football Media Days, but the first
time between my vacation and then and then you headed
out to Las Vegas for Round Rock Express Action. Here's
a good luck charm man. You're out there and they
went three and oh what happens? You turn it back
over to Kobra and what happens, boom, they get smacked

(01:14):
around yesterday up in Takoma.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Well, you know, Michael Helman and Josh Young end up
getting called up after that three game sleep of Las Vegas,
and Helman and Young have been a been reason why
the Rangers have kind of turned it around lately. So
what a fun week in Las Vegas. And look out
Craig giving a half back from the playoffs. You know,
I'm starting to get a little bit getting more emotionally

(01:38):
attached out to the Rangers. So good thing, bad thing,
I don't know, we'll see. But yeah, twenty eight days. Wow,
that's twenty eight days. That's a lot longer than last year.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Right, Yeah, it was because the SEC media days and
then you go into Vegas. Yeah, that's what pretty much
tacked on an extra week onto that. So but anyway,
we're back here, we're in the studio. They got a
lot of stuff on tap for you. We're gonna hear
from Jerry Jones, We're gonna hear from Stephen Jones. We're
gonna hear from Brian Schottenheimer. So yes, we will hear

(02:08):
the Cowboys, after all, are in training camp, so we
will hear that. Also today and we'll talk some more
college football about the things going on and also college
basketball because there is off season work going on for
both the Texas men and the Texas women. And toward

(02:30):
that end, we're gonna hear from a couple of the
Texas women's players, as well as from head coach Bick Schaeffer.
I was out at the media availability today. We'll hear
from Jordan Lee, who was smiling as she lugged back
a gold medal having played in that U twenty event
Under twenty national tournament.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
So she and Matty book Are both won gold medals. Yeah,
because the Maddie win for a different team or.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
The same a different one, so they had the Yeah,
they had two different I guess Jordan was the under nine,
that's right, and Maddie under twenty, and they both were
back and they both had gold medals draped around their necks. Today,
we'll hear from Jordan in the two o'clock hour. Coming up,
in the three o'clock hour, we'll hear some from Breonna Preston,

(03:15):
who is transitioning from refreshman and sophomore year. But also
in the three o'clock hour, we began our weekly conversations
with Greg Chapper, to the editor in chief of Dave
Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Now, normally we will have those
conversations on Tuesday afternoons Wednesday this week because we had
the Round Rock Express game yesterday. Also, today is the

(03:37):
day we start giving away copies of the bag. We're
gonna do it for the next couple of weeks. We're
gonna give away some copies of the magazine. Will tell
you how.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
You can be.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
And today is pretty simple, a pretty simple way to
do it. But it is going to involve our talk
back feature, so we'll tell you about that coming up
in the three o'clock hour. In the four o'clock hour,
we'll hear from Vick Shaffer, Texas women's coach. Also, our
good friend Ty Harrington, our resident college baseball analyst, will

(04:12):
join us and we'll get his thoughts on some of
the off season things that are happening. And it was
announced yesterday that the Longhorn baseball team will take part
in the College Classic down in Houston at Dacon Park
and they're going to start off playing their first ever
time against one specific team that played for a national

(04:36):
championship this past June the Chanta Clears of Coastal Carolina
and then they're going to play Baylor and then they're
going to play Ohio State. All of that's in there,
but that's not to open the season. They'll open the
season home, but they they'll have that in there, So anyway,
we'll get his thoughts on that and some other topics.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
At well as well.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
After all, the place where he coached for twenty years,
Texas State is about to embark on its final season
as a member of the Sun Belt Conference and then
they go into the reinvented, newly reconstituted PAC twelve.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
They'll have that coming up.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
So anyway, we'll visit Ty Harrington coming up in the
four o'clock hour about that as well. So a lot
of things to get to and Cowboys training came in.
All right, We're going to hear some sound here from
Jerry Jones, but you've had a chance to hear it,
and even when you're out in Las Vegas, I'm sure

(05:35):
you were keeping tabs on what the Cowboys were up
to with the state of the team address out there,
because even though I know you don't want to watch
them right now on TV, there's always that curiosity.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
That goes into a training.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Camp, especially when you're talking about your favorite pro football team, right,
I mean you had some curiosity about.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
You, Yeah, I think you know.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
July August, when training camp starts for your favorite football
team and your favorite college football team, that's when you're
the most hopeful, Right, You're the most hope because you
know every team is zero and zero at the same record,
So you'll talk yourself into you know, your ex favorite
football team, and then maybe two weeks in the season,
you realize, man, I just got suckered into that, and

(06:17):
this team has no chances. I did not feel that
way with the Cowboys last year with Mike McCarthy. I
felt like that team, the roster in the schedule was
just too tough. But going into this season, the schedule
is really tough. I think when I looked at it
when it first came out, I was thinking somewhere in
between seven and nine wins, and I think I'm still
around that. But based off what I've heard from from

(06:38):
Brian Schottenheimer compared to what Mike McCarthy would say in
these press conferences, it actually seems like Schottenheimer is a
really good football coach, and obviously you know his dad.
What his dad did very accomplished. What Schoanaheimer's done is
very accomplished. I have a little bit more hope for
this Cowboys team under Schottenheimer this season than I did

(06:58):
at any point under Karthy on the last.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
Couple of years. Well that's good, that is hopeful.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Now when you But the thing is, though, I think
I finally figured out, just don't listen to what Jerry says.
Just ignore everything Jerry and Stevens say in this press conference,
because I thought Kevin Clark had a really good point
from ESPN.

Speaker 4 (07:15):
His argument.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
I think it was on first take or get up
right with Kevin Clark, Kevin Clark, Ryan Clark, Kevin Clark
the writer. Oh okay, He said that Jerry Jones wouldn't
trade his three press conferences.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
A year for a Super Bowl ring. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Maybe right.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
And you know, you know, what's something the sound.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
I mean, Jerry has one answer where he goes on
for five, six, seven minutes just talking, and he's just talking,
and I you know, I think Jerry lives for this.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
He loves he loves this press conference stuff.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
I mean, you know, looking at it, you have a
brand new football coach, and out of the first fifteen
questions asked, I mean most of them are going to
Jerry Jones, or most of them.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
Jerry Jones is the talking so he lives for that.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
But once you kind of figure out, all right, I'm
actually just here for the football, and you listen to
what Schottenheimer has to say and what he's trying to
do with this offense and stuff. You know, Aberfloss was
a great defensive coordinator before we became a head coach.
Obviously not a great head coach, but sometimes it doesn't
work out. It's because you're a bad head coach does
not mean you're going to be a bad coordinator. And

(08:16):
so I think Shothamer did a good job with the hires.
I think the roster for what they've done is pretty solid.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
Now.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
I don't think they're gonna win the Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
I think Philadelphia is by far the best team in
the league and in the Eastern Conference. But if you
are a Cowboys fan, I think you do feel attle
little more hope here with Schottenheimer than you did under McCarthy.
At least that's how I feel going into this training camp.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Okay, so on the heels of Cameron saying, don't listen
to Jerry and Steve when you're about to listen to Jerry.
It's great, it's great radio. Let's start right at the
top with this thing. You know, this was I read
this quote the other day. In fact, I saw the
SoundBite when it happened when Tyler Smith got there and
they said, what are the realistic expectations world championship? Then

(09:01):
we should be super Bowl champions That's the deal. Why
not we think we don't? You think we gain? Asked
the media as well. So Jerry was asked what about
Tyler Smith saying, this is a Super Bowl roster of players.

Speaker 6 (09:14):
Tyler's one of the most intelligent guys in the NFL,
and if he's thinking that way, I'll go right along
with him. But I think that we've done We've addressed
many areas that bid us As I look at what

(09:35):
last year was about, y'all are going to ask about
some of those, I'm sure here today, but I think
we've addressed them in a good way that will make
us better. Having Dak under center is a good place
to start to begin with.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Okay, so you have that and remember all the dramas
going into getting Dak Prescott's con Prescott's contract done and
they did.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
It made him very, very highly paid.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
So here's Michael parsons situation just sitting out there right now. Now,
correct me if I'm wrong. Camp Parsons did report to
training camp even though he doesn't have a new deal
done yet.

Speaker 4 (10:15):
Yeah. Yeah, And he had some fivery comments too yesterday.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
Yeah, all right. So here's Jerry asked about.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
If he's expecting Michael Parsons to be a full on
engaged person in practice.

Speaker 6 (10:28):
Well, everybody here is under contract. Everybody, yes, yes, And
so that's that's what that is from the standpoint of
let's say what happens relative to I'm looking at the
entire NFL when I say this, and that's players that
are under contract and teams looking to make it better

(10:55):
for the team and for the player in terms of
that of that that is incumbent. If you're in that
price range, when you're up there in that top ten percent,
so to speak, of the league and that top quartile
of your team, leadership is really big. And leadership exhibits

(11:18):
himself when you're negotiating as well. And so I'm appreciative
of Michael being here. I am, and it's incumbent upon us. All.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
We've got.

Speaker 6 (11:31):
A player that we've a docked him for not being
here during off season workout, as you well know, and
we will find him for that because those parts of
a contract to go directly toward the leadership that he's
is as a player relative to the rest of the

(11:53):
team and certainly obviously to our fans as well. So
I'm big into and nothing not alone either, a big
into showing anything you can do for leadership if you're
going to be one of these guys that are in
the top drawer of all the money.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Okay, by the way, we had our first relative two
of the season. There's that's one of Jerry's pet phrases
is relative two. So we had our first relative two
of the season there to mark.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
We're gonna take a break. We're gonna hear some more
from that.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
We're also, like I said, going to hear from Jordan
Lee from the Texas women's basketball team. We as always
always give you the opportunity to reach us via the
text line. You can text us text the word Texas
follow by your question or comment to eight one five
three zero. So just whatever you text the word Texas

(12:48):
followed by your comment. Like the one guy who said
Cameron has been on load management was the way that
that was.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
I wish I was a load management I wish he's
been working pretty hard.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
So the text that text the word Texas followed by
your question or comment to eight one five three zero
standard messaging and data rates may apply. Well, you're more
from Jerry, and we'll hear some from Steven, and eventually
we'll hear from Brian Shott and.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
There's a lot to get to.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Well, we'll do that and a lot of football to
talk about, and we'll hear from Texas women's sophomore guard
Jordan Lee coming up when we continue on thirteen Under
the Zone here on Wednesday afternoon, and the band is
back together again today, Cameron Parker back in the studio,
Like I said's our first first show in the studios
together in twenty eight days. And we were in Atlanta

(13:42):
together at SEC Media Days. But between my vacation and
then in the SEC Media Days and then Cameron being
off to Las Vegas with the Express, time flies.

Speaker 4 (13:52):
It really does. Time flies.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
Also for the Texas women's basketball team, does seem like
yesterday where they were walking off the floor in Tampa
following their run to the Final Four and coming up short.
They lost to South Carolina in them, but their excitement
about the coming season. It's funny you mentioned South Carolina.

(14:14):
There's a decent chance that the Longhorns could play them
in a non conference game this year. They're playing in
that Legends Era event in Las Vegas. Yeah, and the
other three teams there are UCLA, South Carolina, and Duke.

Speaker 7 (14:34):
Now.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
I think their first game is against UCLA. I believe
is the first one. They haven't released their non conference
full schedule. I don't think in terms of dates and
everything that the opponents are pretty much known. They're like,
they're gonna play Baylor, They're gonna play the Baylor women.
Texas will in Fort Worth at Dickey's Arena. They've got

(14:55):
that going. They have the acc SEC challenge. Are going
to play North Carolina at home at Moody Center this year.
Among the opponents, they have some other in state games
obviously at home. They will also play ut Rio Grand
Valley down in the Valley again this year.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
They'll play UTRGV.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
We'll hear Vick Schaffer talk about some of that coming
up in the four o'clock hour, But most exciting for
where the fact is they've got like five new faces
because between the incoming freshmen and the transfer portal, they
have new faces. Among those who are familiar faces, they've
got sophomores who were freshmen last year learned a lot.

(15:38):
Brianna Preston is one of those. We're going to hear
from her next hour. There's there and then Jordan Lee
is coming off playing for and being part of a
winning national team in the interer nineteen national tournament. So
here was the conversation, a little media event warning there

(16:01):
in the practice gym with the long worn sophomore guard
Jordan leetunities of season.

Speaker 8 (16:06):
So tell us about the experience.

Speaker 9 (16:08):
It was amazing, but very long. It was my first
time traveling that far. But it was awesome to you know,
to represent kind of our country on that stage.

Speaker 10 (16:18):
And the U nineteen is traditionally pretty hard.

Speaker 9 (16:21):
Like I remember talking to Maddie a little bit about
when she played, and you know what the atmosphere was like,
especially because.

Speaker 10 (16:26):
You know, they played Spain and Spain and it was amazing.

Speaker 9 (16:29):
The court was great, you know, just being able to
you know, bond with those girls, and again just representing
your country on that on that stage was amazing.

Speaker 11 (16:38):
Other than coming home with some hardware, I mean, what
was the biggest takeaway or biggest thing you feel like
you've learned.

Speaker 12 (16:42):
From this experience.

Speaker 9 (16:43):
I always like different perspectives, especially being coached by other coaches,
So just learning kind of their terminology and certain things
that they think are important defense, offense, and kind of
how they you know, prepare for games and prepare their
teams for games.

Speaker 10 (16:56):
It's really fun.

Speaker 8 (16:57):
How different was playing for those coaches as opposed.

Speaker 10 (16:59):
To It's honestly not too different.

Speaker 9 (17:02):
I don't feel like coach my three coaches I had
Terry Moore and from Indiana, Neil Ivy from Notre Dame,
and jose Fernanda's from US, and they're all amazing, and
they do things like a little bit differently, especially because
it's just such a short amount of time. They like
divide the responsibilities and so it's like their philosophies for
like defense, for kind of that whole weekend.

Speaker 10 (17:26):
But it's not it's not too different.

Speaker 13 (17:27):
You know.

Speaker 9 (17:27):
Every coach of course has their you know, own sayings,
own ways to communicate things, and own emphasis on both
sides of the ball, and that's probably the only thing.
But I think that's kind of, you know, standard across
the board.

Speaker 13 (17:38):
What coach kind of impresonated with you the most of like, yeah,
because you're like my fellow player.

Speaker 10 (17:42):
I don't know, I don't know.

Speaker 9 (17:45):
Actually I kind of talk to all three because again,
they split their honestly responsibilities pretty pretty evenly. I talked
to coach Terry a little bit more than I did
this year, especially you know, being on the older half
of the group and having that college experience, especially being
at Texas. So I do feel like I got a
little bit closer with her this time around as opposed
to last year, you know, because she did lead us,

(18:07):
lean on us in that leadership way.

Speaker 12 (18:11):
That was their four straight when in the Fever World Games.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
I don't think it's both games, but you know what
I'm talking about.

Speaker 12 (18:19):
What is it that has made that team so good
for such a long time.

Speaker 9 (18:24):
The biggest piece is just the common understanding of you know,
the goal and sacrifice. You know, you're very fortunate to
be on the USA team because you're gonna have three
top three kids from every class, you know, a puffer
of talent and so when people are able to come
together and just understand that they're playing for a common
goal rather than playing for stats, you know, their last name,
it's pretty special and you know you want to carry

(18:45):
on that tradition. You never want to be the ones
coming home on a ten hour flight with you know,
knowing that you lost that streak. So it's definitely a
big sense of pride, and you know you take that
on the court.

Speaker 14 (18:55):
Is there a part of your game that you feel
got better just for these.

Speaker 9 (19:00):
Mm One thing that we did a little bit differently
than we run at Texas is we ran a little
bit more ball screen stuff and so just kind of
you know, iqise learning about different coverages and kind of
how to play out of that. We did that you
know predominantly as part of our offense over there, and
that was probably the biggest one.

Speaker 8 (19:15):
Did you help your teammates with uh pressure defense?

Speaker 13 (19:18):
Oh?

Speaker 9 (19:18):
Absolutely absolutely, you know, defense alway is one of those
things that kind of carries over regardless of you know,
strategies or how intense it is.

Speaker 10 (19:26):
So definitely she didn't make the cut.

Speaker 15 (19:29):
But what was the experience like going with Eleah through
team trials and kind of getting to spend some time
with her out in Colorado and just that experience.

Speaker 9 (19:37):
It's super fun, and especially because like not many teams,
you know, I had two people to be able to
you know, represent their university at trials. So it is
also fun too to get to know her, you know,
before I got here for that a few days and
it's getting to know somebody and kind of one of
the most intense environments that you're going to be in.
So it was great and she represented you know, the
Tech University of Texas absolutely really well.

Speaker 15 (19:59):
So you have to finish the season kind of on
a little tear in the tournament.

Speaker 7 (20:04):
Coming to the sub season, What did you wanna work
on the parts of your games?

Speaker 15 (20:07):
Could you could you wanna improve on the build off
the way you ended your last season?

Speaker 9 (20:11):
Definitely, ball handling and finishing. Those are the biggest two.

Speaker 16 (20:14):
You know.

Speaker 9 (20:14):
Last year I kind of was fifteen feet and out,
and I feel like I could get downhill a little
bit more this year and be able to help bring
the ball up and do different things out of our offense.

Speaker 8 (20:24):
You still doing the whole pre med thing and all that.

Speaker 9 (20:27):
Yes, I am, and honestly it hasn't gotten too serious.
I took you know a few more of like those
core science courses in the second semester last year. And
the most like difficult part of that was just balancing it.
It wasn't necessarily like the course load and the material.
It was kind of you know, strategizing for how much
we were gone, especially you know late March and April,
and just figuring out the right time to study and

(20:49):
get my work done. But summer I had two online Obviously,
it was tough being gone for three weeks.

Speaker 10 (20:53):
So my class holding the summer's not too hard, but foul.

Speaker 9 (20:56):
I'll check back with you and let you know how
that goes.

Speaker 14 (20:59):
Yeah, well, I's gonna ask you, do you during that
summer with the online stuff. Yes, out of all of
that play into what you had to do overseas and
and and playing and practicing, it was.

Speaker 10 (21:09):
Not bad at all.

Speaker 9 (21:11):
The class load was like pretty much divvied up week
by week, and so there wasn't really an opportunity to
even like work ahead or front load or anything like that.
But it kind of made the workload easy. And one
of the things about being you know overseas is kind
of just.

Speaker 10 (21:24):
Eat sleep, basketball.

Speaker 9 (21:25):
So we were, you know, going back to our rooms
that I have played, so time to get work done.

Speaker 7 (21:29):
Yeah, never talking to her in a couple of minutes.

Speaker 15 (21:32):
But what do you see from the offseason and what
do you expect from her that she goes into her
sop ride.

Speaker 10 (21:38):
I'm expecting the world. Honestly.

Speaker 9 (21:40):
We've been talking about kind of our goals and ambitions
for both one another and that we have for you know, ourselves,
and I'm super excited. You know, she puts in the
work and not only does she put in the one
of work, she takes the opportunity. She doesn't wait for
you know, it to come to her. And I think
that mindset, especially with the way we play, is gonna
take her a long way this year.

Speaker 10 (21:59):
So I can't to watch.

Speaker 7 (22:04):
Oh, when you were overseas and you bring all your
energetic stuff.

Speaker 15 (22:07):
On the sidelines, like did you delegate that someone else
or how did that happen?

Speaker 10 (22:11):
I definitely did.

Speaker 9 (22:12):
It wasn't as energetic, you know, I have to scale back,
you know, just see how filling out the coaches and
stuff like that.

Speaker 10 (22:20):
But no, definitely brought that part.

Speaker 9 (22:22):
And it's so funny because there was, like I think
almost every single one of my teammates asked Is that
how I am like in college? And I was like, yes,
it is.

Speaker 4 (22:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
She was referring to and you've seen it cam how
excited she gets on the sideline and repressed and like
say when other players are on the floor and it's
kind of like that waving the towel stuff and jumping
up and down. And so she was doing some of
that with the national team and they were like looking
at her, like do you like regularly do this sort
of thing.

Speaker 4 (22:53):
She's like, yeah, that's what I do.

Speaker 17 (22:55):
They were like, okay, so hey, I guess we're so
used to it because we see it every game, but
I mean like the sideline dancing, yeah, and like we'll
be on the road and stuff, and sometimes you know,
we'll see them cut up you know, game highlights and
tape and their video guy will lead up with like
he'll include clips of them dancing after made buckets and stuff.

Speaker 4 (23:18):
So like Vick Schaeffer loves it.

Speaker 3 (23:20):
In fact, he I think he wants his team and
his bench to be able to have fun on the sellide.
And you know a lot of coaches, we want you
to be able to communicate, right, you know, call out
you know, screens and stuff. But also, we want you
out there celebrating, having fun, picking up your teammates.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
You enjoy yourself, right, exactly, absolutely, Okay, that's Jordan Lee.
Next hour, we're gonna hear from Brehanna Preston. In the
four o'clock hour, we'll hear from Vic Schaeffer as well
as they go through their off season work up. Next
inconceivable here on Wednesday afternoon, right here on AM thirteen
under the Zone. Second hour of the program here on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. Glad to have

(23:57):
you with us. Craig Way alongside the producer, camera and Parker.
In a few minutes. Greg Tepper, to the editor in
chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, will be with us.
So he will. He will join us, and we'll talk
about the brand new edition that is out. It's on
the shelves the places where you would buy your periodicals

(24:17):
and publications.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
It's out there, and Texas fans are gonna love love
who's on the cover.

Speaker 1 (24:22):
Yeah right, no, big, no big shock there. As we
talked about Sark on the cover, my wife Linda said
he looks rather intense there, so well, Sark can be
an intense guy good, but he can also give be
a pretty affable.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
Laid that kind of guy as well.

Speaker 1 (24:41):
Well, we'll get some review from Tepper about that, how
that the cover came out of Mike Craven's story and uh,
and then we're also going to give away the first
three copies of the magazine that we're going to give away.
We give away copies every year, and we're gonna give
away three today. We're going to tell you how that happens.

(25:03):
And uh it's it's actually today going to be simpler
than it is on most days, so or put it
this way, it's going to be uh simpler, but uh
it'll require some quick on the draw kind of stuff. Uh,
so we'll we'll explain that coming up. Also later on

(25:23):
this hour, we'll hear from Breanna Preston, Texas women's basketball
sophomore guard and and get her thoughts on you know,
the off season and getting ready for the coming season
where you have uh that you know, the returning players
as well as the newbies with the new faces, the freshman,

(25:47):
the incoming freshmen, and also those who are coming in
via the transfer portal, because that's always a very interesting thing. Uh,
you know, the dynamic of that. This is the first
time that Cameron and I have been on a show
together in a week, other than when you popped on
from Las Vegas last Prouty for a couple of minutes.

(26:10):
But it's first time we've been on the show together
in a week, so and I haven't had a chance
really to get your feedback on Scotty Scheffer.

Speaker 3 (26:18):
Oh man, I mean everything he's done, and we just
every time he wins, it's just like he's the first
golfer to do this since and it's always Tiger Woods.
And let's get this straight here, there will never be
another Tiger Woods. The amount of things he accomplished. I
mean the no cut streak or the cut streak rather right,

(26:40):
I don't think anyone, not even Scotty Scheffler, will touch that.
And now like with all these events having no cut events,
it's you know, it's a little bit arbitrary and stuff.
But I mean the amount of days it took Scotty
Scheffler to win his fourth major, the same amount of
days as Eldrick Tiger woulds. So you know, he's in
the conversation with him, and I think the fun thing

(27:02):
to look out for is you know, obviously we talk
about this is actually Las Vegas, right, you know, his
press conference and hey, what's neck? Can he win the
US Open and stuff? And I really think, you know,
the way he's at mentally with his golf swing. You know,
he hasn't had any major injuries and stuff. He he
doesn't have. I mean, he has a violent golf swing,

(27:23):
but so did Tiger Woods. But I don't think it's
the point where he's going to be having major health
issues down the road.

Speaker 4 (27:29):
Nor was going to cut his hand cut his hand.

Speaker 3 (27:32):
He's had some weird next stuff, but that, you know,
that just happens with with anybody and everybody. I think
he's in position, Craig to really establish himself as one
of the greatest golfers in this game. I mean, he's
already there with four majors. You know, it's crazy to
think about, but you know, he has more major championships
than Jordan Speed who played befo him. Jordan with three,
Scotty now with four, and well, you know, we'll see

(27:53):
what happens the rest of the year. At the FedEx Cup,
I don't think anybody's really too invested in it now.
I think the Ryder Cup's more interesting. But on the
next year, you know, Shinna Kokills is a great course
set up for him. I'll go back to Augusta where
he can when what does it? It's would be back
to back with his third green jacket, I think. And
then uh Pga is somewhere that no one your words

(28:13):
that next year to make that.

Speaker 2 (28:15):
Would be autside Philly.

Speaker 3 (28:16):
Yeah, that'll be. That's actually a fun golf course. So
but you know a lot I've seen some stuff and
Colin Coward talked about how he's, you know, like a
boring golfer. I don't think he's boring. I think the
thing is with Tiger. What when you think about Tiger Woods,
you think about the fist pumps, right, you know, And
I think Tiger brought a little bit of flashiness to

(28:37):
his game. You don't see Scotty like, you know, club
twirling or letting out big fist pumps and stuff. Even
even when he won eighteen, you know, takes the cap off,
he hugs Ted Scott. You know, it's kind of a
delayed reaction. And then afterwards he turned when he saw
his family, his wife Meredith, and there's that's when he
went like, oh, you know and stuff like that. I
think if if Scotty Scheffler was club twirling and fist

(29:01):
pumping and all this stuff, people would like him just
as much as Tiger Woods, but also Tiger Woods. And
if you guys want to, you know, Jordan'speith had a
really good press conference on Sunday. He was asked about
Scotty Scheffler, and you know, Jordan was like, you know,
Scotty is so content with being who he is. He's
not trying to transcend the game the way Tiger Woods did. Right,
we had never seen a golfer like Tiger Woods before.
We've kind of seen Scotty Scheffler before in the forms

(29:24):
of various other golfers, right. I mean Rory mcroy's golf
career was kind of similar at the beginning too, you know,
Scotty Scheffer right when Rory just kind of dominated the
game from twenty eleven to twenty fourteen, and then of course,
and he went to PGA fl Hall in twenty fourteen,
doesn't win again until he wins out augusta earlier this year.
So we've kind of seen golfers like Scotty before. We
had not seen Tiger Woods before, so I think it's

(29:46):
unfair to really compare those guys, but the same breath,
Scotty Scheffler is accomplishing a lot of things that have
not been done since Tiger Woods. Therefore, we need to
really appreciate him like we did.

Speaker 1 (29:58):
Tiger Woods at his point in his career at this Yeah,
and like you said, Colin Coward calls him boring or
some others might think that that just evokes in my
mind that old thing. I'm not responsible for your opinion
of what you think I am. Yeah, you know, that's
he's just he's just out there doing his job and.

Speaker 2 (30:22):
Called to be.

Speaker 1 (30:24):
Is not only one of the greatest players in the game,
but from what everybody tells me, one of the nicest
guys in the game as well.

Speaker 2 (30:32):
Speaking of nice guys, up next.

Speaker 1 (30:34):
We'll talk to some football Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazines
editor in chief Greg Tepper joins us for the first
of our weekly visits. So they're going to go all
the way through the end of football season. That's next.
I'm thirteen under the Zone. The reason for playing the
Lindsay Buckingham Tooon hears. I don't know if you heard
the news that Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are re

(30:55):
releasing I guess remastering, re releasing their original album that
they did together before they even joined Fleetwood Mac called
Buckingham Nicks and that's coming up, I think on September nineteenth.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
And what it has done is.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
It sparked a flurry of speculation and conversation as to
whether there is going to be a reunion of Fleetwood Mac.

Speaker 2 (31:18):
We'll find out over time. We do know this.

Speaker 1 (31:21):
We have a reunion on deck right now with your
opportunity to win a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
We've been doing this every year since nineteen ninety eight,
and we've done it through different ways. We've been on
site when the late great Dave Campbell himself was with us.
We were out of a Randalls that old Randalls that

(31:41):
used to be right were thirty fifth and thirty eighth
split there over by Seaton Hospital. Bill Schonan and I
were over there doing that all the way back in
nineteen ninety eight, and Dave came out there and sat
out there and just signed magazines for three hours out
there did that. That was the way he was. That's
the way he did that. Here's how we're gonna do

(32:02):
it today. We're gonna give away three copies today and
it's real easy today, just gotta be quick. As we've
told you, we're gonna give these way by way of
our talkback feature. So the way that works is you
download the iHeartRadio app on your phone if you don't
already have it, it's free, it's easy, and all that
you search AM thirteen under the zone and then when

(32:23):
you do that, it comes up.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
There's two buttons.

Speaker 1 (32:24):
There's a white button with a little white triangle and
that's just to listen to us. There's a red button
with a white microphone. You want to tap that button,
and that is our talkback feature, and you leave us
a message. It can be up to thirty seconds, then't
have to be. It can be five to ten seconds,
whatever wants to be. But you leave us a message.
And today, to start it off, the first three who

(32:47):
access us via the talkback feature will win a copy
of the magazine. Our man antone like them will sift
through that and the first three to do it are
gonna win copies of the magazine.

Speaker 4 (32:56):
Day.

Speaker 1 (32:56):
We're gonna give it away in different ways in coming days.
But that's how we're leading it off today, and we're
leading off our new season of Talking Football with Greg Tepper,
the man who now carries the title of editor in
chief as the late great Dave Campbell did at Dave
Campill's Texas Football Magazine. You when you were on with

(33:16):
this a couple of weeks ago, you said, it is
a responsibility you do not take lightly.

Speaker 2 (33:22):
But when you were at Texas High.

Speaker 1 (33:23):
School coaching school over the weekend as we were, and
I saw you down in San Antonio, did you did
you do? You get a lot of questions about that
when you were there at coaching school in the exhibit
hall by people, Oh so you're the EI C. Now
you're the You're the big man in charge. They had Hancho,
the big Geese, all of that.

Speaker 5 (33:40):
Yeah, yeah, there there there was a fair number of
people who who asked me about it, and they said, so, like,
what's different, And I'm like, well, I don't know. You're
still just gonna yell at me about the magazine anyway,
Like that's that's kind of the role it's now.

Speaker 4 (33:53):
It's just like.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
It's a fancier title.

Speaker 5 (33:55):
I suppose, but but yeah, that you know, I think
it's it's it's obviously and honor, but it was I
will say this, and this is a clear, clear difference
between Dave Campbell and I with not one person asked
me to sign a magazine, not one person, and that
that was always that was always the fun part of
coaching school.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
And we would bring mister Campbell.

Speaker 5 (34:16):
Is that like you would see these like big burly
like strength and conditioning coaches turned head coaches who would
walk up to this frail eighty five.

Speaker 2 (34:26):
Year old, you know, eighty eight year old man and be.

Speaker 5 (34:28):
Like, mister Campbell, it would be a great honor if
she signed my magazine. That's never happened to me once
and so and I don't anticipate it will happen.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
I mean at least not for quite some time.

Speaker 4 (34:41):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
I get to tattle on you, and this only because
this has happened to me a lot of times. With
when we were doing the show back in the day,
somebody came up to you when we were at this
was after the Hall of Honor Bank what Saturday night,
I guess it was, and or Sunday whenever it was.
It was Sunday after the panel discussion, somebody came up
to you while I was standard or talking to you

(35:03):
and was giving you grief about about about coverage of
one specific school over another specific school.

Speaker 5 (35:11):
That yeah, it was someone It all runs together now,
but yeah, there, there's definitely yeah, I heard a fair
amount of it. This was like coaching school comes at
a great time because coaches have now had most of
them had their magazines if they're subscribers, and and now
they're they're they're hitting store shelves across the state of Texas,
by the way, so you can go out to your AGV,

(35:31):
your your Brooksire's.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
Your Walmart, your Byrones and Noble and find it or
you can win one right here on the.

Speaker 5 (35:35):
Zone and the But now people have seen it, and
now they know what to be mad at me about.

Speaker 4 (35:42):
It's not a question of if they're going to be mad.

Speaker 5 (35:44):
It's like it's it's like we can dial it in
and we go like, actually, you had a thirtain district
that's disrespectful. Now it's it's it's it's overall received pretty well.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
You've got your fair people. A fair number of people
who are like, why.

Speaker 5 (35:56):
Aren't we hire or more more likely more coaches me
and say, why aren't we lower? Because that's that's what
that's what they want ultimately, is Boltimore material?

Speaker 4 (36:05):
All right?

Speaker 1 (36:06):
Did you get questions about the masthead because you said
that was a big thing for you guys to change
the mask head. It's still has Dave's signature on there,
Dave Campbell's Texas Football, but it's not that ban or
like that you had forever and ever and ever that
Dave started back in nineteen sixty, is it? Did you
Did you get many questions about that?

Speaker 4 (36:23):
We got a few.

Speaker 5 (36:23):
Yeah, few people who noticed it, because I think that's
one of the things that we take for granted around here,
is that, like we got people who've been reading our.

Speaker 2 (36:32):
Magazine in a long time.

Speaker 5 (36:34):
They have reading their magazine in forty fifty years, and
so that.

Speaker 4 (36:37):
Like, when you changed something.

Speaker 5 (36:39):
That is as front and center as the masthead, then
people are going to notice it. Like if you know,
we've we've had we've got changes in the vagacine, you
know what we and sharp eyed viewers will notice it.

Speaker 2 (36:51):
But this is one of the more visible changes we've made.

Speaker 5 (36:53):
And and so we got a few, the fair number
of people who commented on it all positive, all said
that they like it. Most of what we heard was
we like how big Dave's date is, Like, that's one
of the things there's sometimes you look past. And obviously
there was a time before he was you know, our
nineteen sixty one was obviously that Dave Campbell's Texas Football
became that, you know, I want to say sometime in
the seventies, maybe it became Dave Campbell's instead of just

(37:15):
Texas Football. But yeah, people like the idea of his
name being front and center, which was kind of the
whole point.

Speaker 1 (37:23):
So my, my, my lung suffering wife who you know,
Linda loves to cover. She did say, Sark cooks really intense.
The covern that said, well, you can be intense sometimes.
It was a great job by your photography staff in
a tremendous article done by Mike Craven did such a

(37:45):
good job, like he always does on all of the
college pieces that he authored in the magazine.

Speaker 5 (37:51):
Yeah, Craven Craven, we work him to the bone, planning simple,
but he especially shined I think in the Stark feature
where he got he really dug into I think the
core of some of the things about Steve Sarkisian and
his journey back and what makes him kind of an
unlikely guy to be the guy to bring Texas back
quote quote unquote because there were times where it wasn't

(38:13):
gonna happen. I mean, he was getting ready to call
that wild Oklahoma State Western Michigan game that that.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
He was although preparing for it.

Speaker 5 (38:21):
When Dick Saben called, to be honest, aft like they were,
he kind of thought his coaching career might be over.
And now he's got an opportunity. You know, we have
a spoiler alert if you want to flip through the
magazine to our college section. We have Technics ranked number one,
weaving textas going to win ants championship.

Speaker 2 (38:34):
At least they are our early pick.

Speaker 5 (38:36):
And and those are you know, for that kind of
transition is pretty remarkable. And then, by the way, from
Craige's Behalf You, he wrote I think eleven of the
thirteen FBS sections, Carter Yates wrote utep and Sam Houston.

Speaker 2 (38:50):
And and and so it's it's grinding.

Speaker 5 (38:52):
It's getting on the phone with all these coaches and
just making sure you're you're getting the inside scoop as
best you can.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
And and did a remarkable job.

Speaker 5 (38:59):
So we work them to the bone, you know, But
now he gets to interlax a little bit of it.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
All right, So now that the magazine's out, I can
ask you some specific questions that I was holding off
until it hit the shelves. I asked you, even before
it hit the shelves, if you were able to hit
the four hundred number on the four hundred pages or
did you have to go beyond it? And you paused
and you said, we made it to four hundred. How
did you do it? Given what looks to be even

(39:26):
more expansive coverage, certainly of your collegiate section, and I'm
looking at the high school section. It doesn't look any
worse for where in terms of the total coverage, how'd
you pull it off?

Speaker 2 (39:36):
We're throwing to the bone, man.

Speaker 5 (39:37):
I mean, like what you'll notice, honestly that like we're
taking there, we're taking pages from like the index, right,
we're taking pages from like we're squeezed and like state champions,
all that stuff in the back of the end zone,
the a lot of the reference stuff.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
We're trying to.

Speaker 5 (39:53):
Squeeze it out. But I will tell you, like you know,
I'll just break some news here on the zone. We
are reaching it in election point because for example, you
may know.

Speaker 4 (40:03):
Utub's moving to the Mountain West.

Speaker 5 (40:05):
Yeah right, Texas State moving to the PAC twelve is
actually a one for one switch because we can just
turn the sun Belt preview into a PAC twelve preview.
Right for me, when these things happen, this is the
way my brain is broken. I'm thinking, Okay, we don't
have to add a page for that, but we will
have to add in a Mountain West page at some
point and starting next year. And so now I'm thinking

(40:28):
I'm gott to find another page somewhere. You know, we
we're squeezing and squeezed it as best we can. But
like there will there, like ultimately they will come a
point where it's like we're going to have to think
about expanding. But Farida pages is where we're stuck at.
We've found a way to keep everything for the most
part in tact.

Speaker 4 (40:45):
But like for.

Speaker 5 (40:46):
Example, we don't cover the Cowboys and Texans anymore.

Speaker 4 (40:49):
We just we had to dig it because we just
needed the space.

Speaker 5 (40:53):
You know, Sam, if you are looking at the Texans prev,
you can blame Sam Houston. That is actually the trade
off that happened there, So what we'll figure it out.
But it is, it's, it's it's it's a lot of
football to squeeze in Feurigner pages.

Speaker 1 (41:07):
Yeah, and and trust me when I say this, I'm
not complaining about any of it because it looks great.
My suggestion would be, oh, go ahead, expanded to four
to twenty five, put the Cowboys and checks back in,
and put whether the thing I.

Speaker 4 (41:19):
Used to love, dearly love when you would.

Speaker 1 (41:22):
Have that page of the entire Division one college football schedule.
In fact, there was a magazine you had the schedules
of even the Jucos and the fcs and the D
two and the D three. I mean, yeah, you could
throw all that in and roll. It's still out at
four twenty five. We we could, you know that.

Speaker 5 (41:39):
That's like if we were to expand, like there are
some things that I would like to bring back, like
like we used to at the front of the magazine.
You'll notice we have a couple we have a couple
of like full page photo spreads and stuff. And I
really love those pages. We call them double coverage. That's
some great photos and including one house park there. They're
in the Austin area really love those. We've had to

(42:00):
trim those back. We used to do three or four.
Now we just have a room for two. So if
we were to expand, those are the things I'd like
to bring back. Is is the schedules. And I remember
the first year we got rid of the schedules. We
we heard about it from function like where where, Like
I count on.

Speaker 4 (42:14):
This and you know, decisions, decisions have to be made.

Speaker 5 (42:17):
It's kind of like I perhaps I've told the story
before when I first when I first got out of college,
I got a job briefly at the Tulsa World and
I was working on the sports copy desk. And I
remember talking to another one of the copy editors at
some point and they said, the worst day we've ever
had here as far as phone calls, was the day
that we got rid of the bridge column. We got

(42:39):
rid of the bridge column for like one day, and
apparently the phone line's lit up, and everybody was like,
what are you doing with it? Like you're you're ruining
my paper? But you know, But but the bridge column
was back I think two days later.

Speaker 1 (42:52):
So uh, maybe we'll learn our lesson to the people
spoke visiting with Greg Taper, editor in chief Dave campbells
Texas Football magazinuem jump to high school and we'll do
some previews here. Let me let me start with six Ah.
You said it would be hard when we were talking
on back not to pick South Lake Carrol number one
in six A and and by the way, folks need

(43:14):
to know, and I like how you guys do this.
I always have uh since you went this route where
you have UH say, in each of the classifications you
will you will have your your top teams and and
and ranked them at your preseason rankings of those teams.
But in class five A and four A and three

(43:34):
AA and two A and A you have a top
twenty five of Division one and Division two. Six A
of course doesn't go the split into the playoff route
until you get to the postseason.

Speaker 2 (43:45):
Therefore you rank a top fifty.

Speaker 1 (43:47):
And I think that's a that's a good representation of
it on that How about your thoughts? I mean, I
look at this top ten, it's a who's who with
South Lake Carol one, defending state champ in D one,
North Crowley two, Duncanville three, Westlake or north Shore five
Vandgrift the defending state champion. Dee two is six, Allen seven,
KD eight like Travis nine and de Soota ten.

Speaker 2 (44:08):
I mean that's a who's who.

Speaker 5 (44:09):
Really, it is like you don't you really don't get
to a relative party crasher in our rankings until you
get to number twelve at four ben ridgepoint, which is
the team I'm really really high on heading in the
twenty twenty five. But yeah, I mean it's it's it's
a blue blood vest there and it usually is in
six A. And you look at Southlake Carroll. You know,
nineteen starters back from last year's ball club, Angelo Renda

(44:31):
brock Boyd, the Ohio States minute wide receiver.

Speaker 2 (44:32):
They're gonna have some of the best tight end play
in the state or defense.

Speaker 5 (44:35):
I think as an opportunity to take a step forward,
they're the team to be I think in Division two,
and they are going the Division two route by virtue
of being in District four. You put in North Prowley.
Now North Crown is really interesting because they are a
team that I think, I think, pound for pound, I
want to make sure I'm thinking this through as it's
coming up. I think powderful pound, they were the best

(44:56):
team in Texas last year, North Prowley. There's some other
teams that could make weekly acclaimed Gordon I think in
one a Division one probably has the best argument against that.

Speaker 4 (45:04):
But let's just say they were the best team in
Power found the state.

Speaker 5 (45:08):
They got hammered by graduation, especially from a star power perspective.
Star power, you know, Chris Jafferson, Quentin Gibson. I mean,
the guys they lost are you don't just go out
there and replace. But yet I think their defense has
an opportunity to be really really special, And in talking
with Ray Gase, he feels really good about what they're
going to bring back offensively. So I think that that's

(45:30):
a team that we think is the early favorite in
Division one. But of course Duncanville Looms Westlake we think
is going to be right there in the mix as well.
To make it back an RF pick to win Region
four again. Billiana Park Northshore is going to be interesting
because they're making a transition at quarterback, although it's a
guy that we've seen a lot of and killed Maryland.
And then you know, Vandergriff talk with Drew Sanders at

(45:51):
coaching school and he feels great about what they've got
coming back and he should. Miles Tedeki is back at
the quarterback spot, who is such a revelation for them.
There is some reload to do on the defensive side,
but we know Drew Sanders is a defensive guy. They're
going to get up to speed. And then the last
one I'll talk about is Alan. I think I think
we put in the rankings. I think I think I

(46:11):
think the comment we made was their back. If you
if you forgot about Alan and they haven't been in
a title game since twenty seventeen, I think it is
if you forgot about him, They're back. They're going to
be a problem this year. So it's a who's who
they're in six acts.

Speaker 1 (46:31):
If you were to pick and I'm just I'm just
scanning your top fifty, let me give you three names
out of these guys, and you tell me who is
a more realistic dark horse to make a run, to
make a real run in the postseason. The three that
I would throw at you would be side Falls. I

(46:55):
would also say Klan Kane and I would say you're
Alma Mater cop Hill.

Speaker 2 (47:02):
That's rude.

Speaker 5 (47:04):
Yeah, I really like Sci Falls.

Speaker 2 (47:08):
I think that they are in for a breakout.

Speaker 4 (47:10):
Year.

Speaker 5 (47:11):
I think that actually, you know, one of one of
the things I think for those who don't know, sci
Fair ISD splits their teams not just into two districts,
but into two different regions. There's a there's side Fair
teams that are in Region two and District sixteen and
side Fair teams that are in District District seventeen in
Region three. They're on the dirty side of it, and
that they're gonna go to Region three. Although dealing with

(47:32):
north Or versus Duncanville feels like a pig onorn to
the other I love what they're gonna do defensively upfront,
James Harris and Kayden mccordy.

Speaker 4 (47:40):
I think they've got an opportunity to be great. They've
got a.

Speaker 5 (47:42):
Quarterback they really like in Britain, Dervic Knee, that I
think could be that team to break out. But I
like I like Clin Kane as well. This is you know,
one of the things that I've got to get over,
and this is the me issue, right is that they lost.
If you remember, they were a team that lost in
the first round of the playoffs. They ran to cy
Ranch in the first round and it's a tough draw

(48:05):
there in the first round of the playoffs. But I
think that if they can kind of get into in
the mix right. One of the things that I think
that I really like about what they're going to have,
especially is they've got some youngsters. They've been really excited
about this, this sophomore class. I think they're going to
start be able to being able to put out there.
The issue with with Caine, to to talk abut both

(48:26):
sides of my mouth here, is that they'll go D
one and so at some point you're gonna have to
deal with some of the big bullies there. Uh as
far as that inact, I believe all three of them
are going to go D one. Side falls. I think
we have projected to go D one as well, he said, confidently.

Speaker 2 (48:39):
Yeah, D one.

Speaker 5 (48:40):
So this is that's something keeping on Coupel. Coupel is interesting.
Cup Hell is a team that my alma mater very
strong last year. They are losing a quarterback, but in
talking with Antonio Wiley at coaching school this week, he
feels great about the quarter I think they've got a
sophomore quarterback that they think could be the real stinking

(49:00):
So couppels in the mix as much as the Pain's
actually pickle for me to say. I think they're gonna
be pretty although Lando's gonna be pretty good too. She
doesn't have anything, any reason to be upset. Well that's true.

Speaker 1 (49:09):
Okay, final thing here, of these two Central Texas six
A programs, which one is more of a threat both,
you have both of them ranked so so you must
think something of them Dripping Springs or Harker Heights.

Speaker 14 (49:26):
Man.

Speaker 5 (49:27):
So I've been on the Dripping Springs vandwagon for a
while now. I really like what they've they've got coming back,
and especially I think that they like the experience they
have coming back.

Speaker 2 (49:36):
And you just look at again.

Speaker 4 (49:37):
I've may have even said this.

Speaker 2 (49:39):
On this program.

Speaker 5 (49:40):
I think that might be one of the more underrated
programs in six A. Like I think like last year
they went eight and four, but the three previous seasons
they've won ten games, ten plus games. They're gonna be
back in that mix. I like Dripping Springs, but the
answer is gonna be Harker Heights. And the reason why
is Hudson Humble, their quarterback. This guy is a coach's kid,
Mark Humble. And when I tell you that, I don't

(50:03):
know that there was a guy that impressed us more
on the seven on seven circuit than Hudson Humble.

Speaker 2 (50:09):
The quarterback at Harker Heights. They're gonna be loaded.

Speaker 5 (50:13):
And you know, you add in the other advantage that
they have is that they're in Region you know, they're
gonna be in Region two, so they won't have to
deal with Linke.

Speaker 2 (50:21):
Travis and West.

Speaker 4 (50:22):
They won't have to deal with those teams.

Speaker 11 (50:24):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (50:24):
You know at some point that's the deal teams from
from DFW area. But I love what this Marker Heights
team comes back, has coming back and and if they
can find some answers on the defensive side, that offense
is gonna hum.

Speaker 4 (50:36):
I am.

Speaker 2 (50:37):
I'm excited about Harker Heights.

Speaker 5 (50:39):
They're in the Killeen area and and I think that
that the quarterback there is going to be a breakout
star across the state this year.

Speaker 1 (50:48):
Okay, so we're off and running next week, we'll jump
to five A. And and oh, by the way, uh
from the text line one, Uh, you had another vote
for the schedule. Somebody said yes, bring the schedules back play,
So that's there's somebody else added in that column. Yeah,
and then somebody else asking will you ask Greg, when
those Dave Campbell's T shirts are going to come out?

Speaker 4 (51:11):
Are there?

Speaker 5 (51:13):
That's the other thing again, you changed so you changed
the masthead, right, you changed the masthead and suddenly everyone
wants merch.

Speaker 4 (51:20):
Yeah, we're we're working on it.

Speaker 2 (51:23):
I can tell you confidently that we're working on it.

Speaker 5 (51:26):
That is the you have been heard, The demand has
been heard, and we are actively working on getting some
merch out for the people because we know we we
we have heard you loud and clear.

Speaker 2 (51:40):
There's a lot of people who who want it.

Speaker 4 (51:42):
So we uh, we've we we're working on plans.

Speaker 2 (51:44):
I can tell you that that that that is in
process here at the Mothership.

Speaker 1 (51:48):
And the final question here uh, somebody asked if you, uh,
let's kick off the season like normal, Greg, do you
still hate our gyle? I would say, first of all,
it was not George Dundavman Sinity. He's a how Boys
training camp, so wouldn't be George. His son, by the way,
Blake dunb I don't know if you saw him. He's
on the coaching staff at Houston Christian. He really he

(52:08):
is running backs and special teams coach for eight CU. Yeah,
he's moving up to the world the special teams.

Speaker 5 (52:15):
They would be fools not to put him on the
special teams, right, that would have been That's that's the
that's the layup of the years.

Speaker 4 (52:21):
Put him on special teams.

Speaker 5 (52:22):
I mean, his special teams units were always like the
best in Texas. So yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Speaker 2 (52:26):
Oh yeah, Argyll.

Speaker 1 (52:27):
I mean for sure they know they know what they did. Guys,
here's a spoiler art. You've got him ranked number four
in five A D two, so you must not hate
him that much.

Speaker 2 (52:38):
I like Argyll a lot.

Speaker 5 (52:40):
Maguire Gasperson, their quarterback is a big time playmaker, and
they have a receiver whose name is escaping me at
the moment, who is like a real, live, certified blue
shit prospect, and they're gonna they're gonna air it out.
It's gonna be weird because, like, I think, I've made
no bunks, but I think Todd Rodgers is one of
the best coach in the state heart stop and and
one of the things he does so well is that
his teams are always chameleons.

Speaker 2 (53:01):
They're always like, what are we good at? Let's just
do that.

Speaker 5 (53:04):
I mean it's not long ago that that they had
Nick Ralston out there carrying the ball forty five times
in a title.

Speaker 4 (53:09):
Game or something like that.

Speaker 5 (53:10):
Right now, this year, they're gonna air it out. Swim
me get up front, They're gonna air it out. I'm
excited to see what I got on this. So yeah,
I mean that's that's that's as deep the hatred goes. Yeah,
the guy you were thinking of was a Julian Caldwell.

Speaker 2 (53:22):
Julian, Yeah. Yeah, he's a playmaker.

Speaker 4 (53:24):
Yeah yeah. So there it is.

Speaker 1 (53:25):
Greg Tembreeze, the editor in chief Dake Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
We shift to Tuesdays starting next week and all the
way through the end of this football season coming up.

Speaker 2 (53:35):
I appreciate weeks.

Speaker 5 (53:37):
When you brought me on to yacht Rock, I was
really shook because normally it's Texas Tuesday that I come on.

Speaker 2 (53:43):
That's right.

Speaker 5 (53:43):
And I was like, and what I tell you because
for those who don't know coaching school, I was there.
I got there Friday night and I just got back
last night, and it's like a casino, like you forget
what time it is because there's.

Speaker 4 (53:54):
No windows and stuff. That's right.

Speaker 5 (53:56):
So I have been I have I have not known
what day. It is for the last like five days.
And so when I got yacht rock in my ears,
I was like, did I do something wrong?

Speaker 1 (54:04):
So there it is some yacht rock for you there
on the way. You'll be back on Texas Tuesdays next week. Hey,
I appreciate the time, and we'll look forward to our
visit next week.

Speaker 2 (54:17):
All right.

Speaker 4 (54:18):
Thanks.

Speaker 1 (54:18):
That's Greg Tapper, editor in chief Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
and we've already tossed out the invitation to win to
win a copy of the magazine. We're giving away three
today to the first three who responded via the talkback,
and we'll know who those are because those are being
tracked by none other than Antoine Miikamar our man extraordinaire

(54:43):
who I handle it, and he'll let us know and
we'll reveal those names tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (54:46):
All right.

Speaker 2 (54:47):
We have more coming up as we continue on thirteen
under the Zone.

Speaker 1 (54:49):
Hey, before we bring you the interview the media session
with Brianna Preston, here were some breaking news. Show Tommy
has just tied a Dodger franchise record by homering in
his fifth straight game.

Speaker 2 (55:06):
He hit it off.

Speaker 1 (55:09):
Former Cedar Park timberwolf Chris Paddock at that one in
the game. Their Dodger's been struggling lately. They've dropped i
think eleven of fourteen, but lately he's been tearing it up.
So's he's hit a home run now in five straight
games for them. They're early in that one there. All right,

(55:30):
let's jump back over to women's basketball. We'll hear the
conversation the media session with the rising sophomore and pretty
exciting star who had herself quite an NCAA tournament, and
that would be Brionna Press in the guard from Jones
bur Georgia.

Speaker 12 (55:46):
Pretty great.

Speaker 11 (55:47):
I'd say, been in the gym a lot, lifting, put
it almost some muscle. You know, you guys will see
that later this year. But yeah, it's been pretty fun.

Speaker 14 (55:59):
What's the routine like forty like on the day by
day when you're in the gym and stuff in terms
of your scheduling, the conditioning in terms in the.

Speaker 11 (56:06):
Basketball, Yeah, so, uh, depending on what time you know,
waits and workouts are scheduled for. I'd wake up around
like maybe like six or seven am, get to the
gym of like an hour early, get some treatment, get
some breakfast, get something in my stomach, something to hold
on to while I work out. Then we'll go hit
the waits for like an hour, and then we'll come

(56:28):
in workout and stuff like that. If I come in
even earlier, I'll put up shots. But if I don't,
then I'll just wait and stay after practice and then
put some shots up.

Speaker 12 (56:39):
Then after that shower, study haul.

Speaker 11 (56:42):
Gotta hit the bucks, and then after that I just
kind of wind down, like just chill.

Speaker 8 (56:48):
Are you one of those people that can eat an
awful lot in the morning and then not throw.

Speaker 4 (56:51):
It up at I can't.

Speaker 12 (56:52):
I can't eat a lot.

Speaker 11 (56:53):
Like the most I'll eat is like a couple of oatmeal.

Speaker 12 (56:56):
Like I cannot eat a lot. I won't be able
to move. Honestly, you're enjoying her or so close?

Speaker 10 (57:03):
What was it like watching her bring home Bold?

Speaker 12 (57:07):
I just felt like a proud, you know sister for real.

Speaker 11 (57:10):
I was watching all the games, you know, commentating myself
recording a TV.

Speaker 12 (57:15):
I'm like, look at Jordan, like what did she do it?
Like she just turned them all over or something. I'm like,
oh God.

Speaker 11 (57:19):
But then she, you know, made really great plays, uh,
great team players. So I was just really proud of
her and happy for her for sure.

Speaker 13 (57:27):
Both of you and then the pigions he are on
really strong high notes. What are the expetitions they y'all
have for yourselves and each other?

Speaker 7 (57:34):
What always work on for this stuff coming out?

Speaker 11 (57:35):
Oh, just keep our foot on the guys for real,
a lot of confidence.

Speaker 12 (57:40):
Uh, we're in the gym working every day.

Speaker 11 (57:43):
Well she just got back, but she's still in the gym,
uh working out, So just making sure we stay consistent, discipline,
and just work hard.

Speaker 12 (57:53):
Yeah, we're excited though, got some energy, new new dances
and stuff coming for y'all.

Speaker 7 (57:58):
So, yeah, you have an address or surprising to hear.

Speaker 12 (58:03):
I haven't y'all know.

Speaker 15 (58:05):
I come with it, Una say, no, what do you
expect to see from Justice? So she makes a transition
to her sophmore year as well.

Speaker 11 (58:12):
Oh no, we've had plenty of conversations like Justice, Like
she's downed in, locked in. She's ready to like really
step out and you know, just be that person that
we always knew she could be. So I'm not even
worried about that too much. She's uh, she's in the
gym all the time. Like I'll walk in, she's in

(58:32):
here before me. I'm like, ooh, I like that I
I'm like, I like that and just wanna keep pushing her,
like just being in the loop making sure she like
she's good and stuff like that. But yeah, we've gotten
pretty close to while Jordan was gone, but uh Geordan's backbit,
but we're still just all hanging out like our little.

Speaker 12 (58:51):
Freshman trio, like when what's south? Yeah, it's fun.

Speaker 10 (58:54):
Is it kind of hit yet that you guys aren't
the freshman trio anymore?

Speaker 12 (58:57):
That you'll learn a little bit?

Speaker 10 (58:57):
I know, Uh, it's it is.

Speaker 11 (59:00):
It has hit because like you can notice in practice
little certain things like we're like leading drills and just
being a lot more vocal being leaders, so you know,
not little babies anymore. You still underclassmen, but you know
we've grown so much in just one year.

Speaker 15 (59:17):
Well you've may have already had a nicklint that she
was coming back, But when Bory decided she was gonna
come back, how did you kind of react? Because on
one hand, that's about a year with getting a learn
from her, but the other hand, maybe a little bit
less playing type of you.

Speaker 7 (59:28):
How did you kind of handle person?

Speaker 4 (59:30):
How did you come back?

Speaker 11 (59:32):
We talked about it because she brought it to my teams,
like you know, I'm coming back, and I was like, well, like,
of course, I'm happy for you. At the end of
the day, you do what's best for you, like regardless
of what anybody has to say. But like as in
terms of like getting on the court and stuff like that,
you know, we're competing, you know, at the end of
the day. Uh so just you know, getting each other better,

(59:54):
pushing each other, still being a leader for our team,
and do whatever we gotta take, like whatever it takes
to get at the wind.

Speaker 18 (01:00:00):
So yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean I would. I don't.

Speaker 11 (01:00:12):
I don't want to, like lie, So I'm like, uh,
it probably was a thought, but just looking at the
position I'm in, like there was nowhere else that could
kind of give me, uh like maybe a better opportunity,
Like I'm still in a great spot.

Speaker 12 (01:00:29):
So I'm like, I wouldn't.

Speaker 11 (01:00:31):
Just I feel like it would be silly of me
to just up and leave so instantly after just one year.

Speaker 12 (01:00:36):
So I'm like, no, I think this is where I
need to be.

Speaker 7 (01:00:40):
Yeah, people experience last year with this, but do you
think you and her play well together?

Speaker 18 (01:00:44):
Absolutely?

Speaker 11 (01:00:45):
It's a lot of energy, a lot of speed and fire,
Like I enjoyed playing with her like for sure on
the court, and we got that little one guard four
guard lineup and whatever coach you know likes to do sometimes.

Speaker 12 (01:00:57):
So and I think we had a lot of success
with with that group.

Speaker 11 (01:01:02):
So just to be able to just have fun with
each other and just play play fast, so yeah, yeah,
and it also helps being able to you know play
the one and the two, you know, so it's still
more time on the court.

Speaker 12 (01:01:16):
Uh, but so yeah, that's good.

Speaker 11 (01:01:19):
Have y'all had any time to give me like fun
off core activities and any team bonding anything. Uh yeah,
for sure, before uh everybody started going out of town.
You know, everybody still got they lives and stuff. It's
still summer, but yeah, we'd all like go out get
some dinner or something, just you.

Speaker 18 (01:01:35):
Know, chop it up. Because you know, we got like.

Speaker 11 (01:01:37):
Five new transfers, I believe five or sus so we
just you know incorporating them and just getting to know them.
And we've gotten close really fast. A lot of positive
energy from our newbies and returners, so our chemistry will
be great this year.

Speaker 4 (01:01:52):
Yeah, did you make it?

Speaker 12 (01:01:56):
You know, I had to go home see the fam,
but uh, that was so fun.

Speaker 11 (01:01:59):
I really needed that, just seeing them hanging out with
them every day, even if I'm just waiting for them
to come home from work, Like I loved it.

Speaker 12 (01:02:07):
I was just sitting there. Then we you know, get
food or go bowling. Very competitive, We're serious in my household.

Speaker 11 (01:02:13):
Absolutely Yeah, what are you both on a good day
one twenty seven.

Speaker 12 (01:02:20):
I'm like, I'm pretty good. I'm trying to get better.

Speaker 11 (01:02:22):
I think I should just go a little more, you know,
find that perfect touch.

Speaker 12 (01:02:26):
But I'm enjoying it. And yeah.

Speaker 15 (01:02:30):
It's something you lacked and confidence lash year. But how
much confident are you? Not giving your college on you
and you're kind of you? I bet I'm this team.

Speaker 11 (01:02:39):
Very confident, I'd say, just getting those reps in practice,
extra reps outside of practice. Like I feel good, My
body feels good. The little pounds I put on, I
feel good. I'm still able to move, uh just as fast,
so I'm if not you know, faster, but my endurance
stamming up. Like everything's looking pretty good. So I'm like,

(01:03:00):
very confident and you know, how will.

Speaker 4 (01:03:02):
Perform this year?

Speaker 1 (01:03:04):
Yeah? So there it is the very confidence. Brehanna Preston,
who says she's a pretty good bowler. By the way,
Vick Shaffer was standing nearby and we said that, and
then somebody asked Vick how his bowling game was. He said,
believe it or not, he said, I was actually the
bowling I taught bowling. He was the bowling teacher when

(01:03:26):
he was at Sam Houston State. He taught a bowling class.
And I said, oh, so, while did y'all like win
a national championship And he was like, no, no, no,
I taught the pe class.

Speaker 4 (01:03:35):
It was bowling at the bowling alley.

Speaker 1 (01:03:37):
We'll be back to wrap up hour number two on
thirteen hunderd The Zone, third and final hour of the
program here on Sports Radio A and thirteen hundred The Zone.
Craig wait, w at you glad to have you with us,
and also please be joined by the producer Cameron Parker.
A little bit later on this hour, Ty Harrington will
talk from college baseball with us some off season stuff,
so we'll get to that coming up. And here momentarily

(01:04:02):
we will hear from Texas women's basketball coach Vick Schaeffer
talking about the off season work that's that's going on.
On the text line, we had somebody that said talked
about in San Antonio nineteen seventy Christopher Christopher Cross subbed

(01:04:23):
in as the lead guitar for Deep Purple when Richie
Blackmore fell ill. When we were talking about subbing in
on things. And I would be remiss if I didn't
at least make note of the passing of Ozzy Osbourne
at age seventy six, and of course a founding another

(01:04:45):
member of Black Sabbath, and then had the fabulous.

Speaker 4 (01:04:48):
Solo career as well.

Speaker 1 (01:04:51):
And I liked Ozzy's music. It will I wasn't a
huge fan of it, but I didn't dislike it at all.
In fact, concert vending days, I worked shows Black Sabbath
with and without Assi and then and then work some
solo OSSI stuff.

Speaker 4 (01:05:09):
So back in the eighties, So yes, did you did
you like Ozzie? You know, I can't tell you.

Speaker 3 (01:05:18):
I can't go through all of Black Sabbath's discography and
tell you, but I did love, love their first album.
I mean, I don't know if did you watch any
of their back to the beginning their farewell cons Yeah,
that was like two weeks ago. That was you know,
it's now in hindsight looking back at it, it's like, well,
first off. I'm so glad that Ozzie was able to
do that. It kind of feels like, you know, the

(01:05:39):
last thing he wanted to do before he felt like
he was okay with passing away.

Speaker 2 (01:05:43):
And it came full circle.

Speaker 3 (01:05:44):
Yeah, full circle that They only played three songs, but
you know, his voice was still there. Unfortunately, the rest
of his body, you know, with thinking with Hodgkins lymphoma
or no, he had Parkinson Parkinson and it was in
the it was in the process of breaking down.

Speaker 2 (01:05:59):
So he was able to do that and uh, and
that was and that was good.

Speaker 3 (01:06:03):
But they were kind of like not maybe like the
first reality TV family, but I remember as a kid
growing up like the Osborne family.

Speaker 4 (01:06:11):
They were always in commercials.

Speaker 3 (01:06:13):
They were always at the reality TV show I think,
like some of them are on uh, Celebrity Apprentice, right,
the old Donald Trump show that I love growing up,
they were kind of that, you know, that family that
was you know, like I think I probably knew who
the Osborns were, not Marie and Donnie Donnie, although I

(01:06:35):
didn't know they were, but i'd probably Osmond's. Yeah, I
knew more of the Osborne's than I did, probably Black Seven,
as I got older. I listened to you know, to
you know, you know Paranoid and iron Man, of course,
iron Man, you know war Pigs. So yeah, crazy train,
crazy train.

Speaker 4 (01:06:52):
Yeah. I mean you hear that at every sporting event
you go to anyway, That's true, that's true.

Speaker 1 (01:06:58):
All right, let's let's hear from the head coach of
Texas women's basketball Vick Shaffer. He had recently returned from vacation.
Other players have returned from national team play. We heard
from Jordan Lee in the first hour of the programs.
You had done so, as had Madison Booker. And we'll

(01:07:19):
get his thoughts on the team as they're coming together
again to get their first you full time together, because
the full team hasn't really been completely together. He'll explain
that along with scheduling and in il and tournaments and
things like that.

Speaker 4 (01:07:35):
Here's the head coach, Vick Schaeffer.

Speaker 14 (01:07:37):
How different from your notice so far is this particular
group at this time of year, from.

Speaker 4 (01:07:46):
Say a year ago. Yeah, I think they've been great.

Speaker 19 (01:07:49):
I think really you have to look at the kids
that we've added to the team, from Elio Crump to
our kids out of the poor that we added, and
I think our current team is really excited about those kids.

Speaker 4 (01:08:07):
They really appreciate.

Speaker 19 (01:08:12):
How they've been able to come in blending and at
the same time their work ethic matches the work ethic
of our returning players, and so it's been.

Speaker 4 (01:08:23):
You know, it's really really been good to come in
and kids are in early.

Speaker 19 (01:08:28):
If we lifted eight, they're in here at seven point fifteen,
seven thirty getting shots up. And so I think for
me as a head coach, knowing that we have that
kind of work ethic in our in our in our building,
in our locker room this time of year is encouraging.
And I think they're excited about our trip to Toronto.

(01:08:52):
You know, getting to play some high quality competition. It's
not your typical foreign tour where you go over and
beat out a couple of two three teams and you know,
your tour in the country and experiencing a bunch of
different cultures. This will be a pretty competitive event and
we'll play some very good, well coached teams, and so

(01:09:16):
I think they've kind of got that in their mind
as well.

Speaker 4 (01:09:18):
I still don't have still haven't had everybody together yet.

Speaker 19 (01:09:23):
Lavisa left to go be with her team in Sweden
to go play in U twenties, Jordan was gone, Madison
was gone, Leah Crump was gone to trials, and so
it's it's I still haven't had everybody together, but hopefully
here we'll get everybody together before.

Speaker 4 (01:09:41):
We go over there.

Speaker 19 (01:09:43):
Jordan hadn't practiced since she came back from winning her
gold medal.

Speaker 4 (01:09:47):
She'll practice tomorrow. We gave her a few days off.

Speaker 2 (01:09:50):
You have tournaments.

Speaker 12 (01:09:52):
I think it's the players are tournament.

Speaker 10 (01:09:55):
How excited for the competition that agency there?

Speaker 4 (01:09:59):
Well, I don't know excited about that.

Speaker 19 (01:10:01):
That's uh, you know that the opportunity to play that
early against some really good competition is certainly exciting for
our players. You know, they'd rather play good people than
than not good, not good competition. So I think our
kids are excited about it. And certainly when you you

(01:10:22):
go into that event knowing that that U c. L
A in South Carolina and Duker in that event with you,
you know you can you better be ready.

Speaker 4 (01:10:32):
And it's November.

Speaker 19 (01:10:32):
It's early in the season, but it's it's it's fine,
It'll be exciting. And at the same time, we still
have to play North Carolina here. We played Baylor up
in Fort Worth, and then we'll play at South Dakota
State right before Christmas. And so we've got a good
non conference schedule. But the New Era event is really good,

(01:10:53):
really cool in that it obviously the the NIL piece is,
you know, incredible. I'd played the Boston Celtics best out
of seven for you know, a check for our kids,
and this is a pretty significant check for our kids.

Speaker 4 (01:11:09):
And so it's you know, for me.

Speaker 19 (01:11:13):
That that was kind of the thing that was most
important was being able to take care of our players
with the opportunity that the New Era folks are doing
for them within il.

Speaker 14 (01:11:24):
Was it a little bit easier to put the non
conference schedule together this year based on the challenges she
had last year and had to go to James Madison,
had to go to Richmond. You've got return games, plus
the challenge games with some of those bigger opponents.

Speaker 8 (01:11:37):
Was it was it a little easier to put it
together this time around?

Speaker 4 (01:11:40):
Yeah, well, I it's never easy.

Speaker 19 (01:11:43):
We just it's it's it's hard to get people to
come here to Austin and play. I thought coach Lovado
did a great job. She kind of grabbed the bull
by the horns early, so to speak, and got our
schedule done way earlier, but she really worked at it,

(01:12:03):
and you have to do that. And so it's kind
of the first time in a long time that I
remember our schedule was done at a pretty what I
would consider early. This time last year, I was still
looking for three games. So but when you have those
returns like your Richmond, James Madison and those folks, plus

(01:12:25):
you're getting an ACC team here on a return, I'm
still my opinion is we went to Notre Dame last year,
they should have to come here this year.

Speaker 4 (01:12:37):
I obviously don't. They don't have the same opinion in
the Conference office of either the ACC or the SEC,
But to me, that's only fair.

Speaker 19 (01:12:45):
But nonetheless, obviously Notre Dame's not coming here, so we'll
play North Carolina here. But you know, getting that game
here at home was big, and then being able to
play you know, Nicky and Baylor up in Fort Worth
and Dickeye's arena will be good in a matchup that

(01:13:07):
you know, we're an hour and a half from each
other and we're both gonna they're going to drive an
hour and a half, we're gonna drive three hours.

Speaker 4 (01:13:12):
And be able to play.

Speaker 19 (01:13:13):
So that'll be good too, and that's a that's a
TV game and that's also an NIL opportunity for our kids.
So I'm always going to look at those opportunities where
we can enhance our kids within IL.

Speaker 8 (01:13:27):
In fact, also that going back down to the valley.

Speaker 19 (01:13:29):
Again, I do yeah that you know, those folks down
there do such a great job and they get so
excited about having any team from the University of Texas
down there. And I think we set their attendance record
a year ago when we went down there. And I
saw the assistant on the road recruiting here this past
weekend and she said, they're going to try to break

(01:13:50):
the record, you know when we come back down there,
and they think they're going to be, you know, a
lot better, and so it'll be a you know, it'll
be good for us to be able to go back
down there and play as well. We have a lot
of fans down there, and it's a it's a great
experience and we we.

Speaker 4 (01:14:05):
Love going down there. I love going down there and
uh and they take good care of us.

Speaker 15 (01:14:09):
Wet that NL conversation is that gonna where scheduling is going,
Like do you see in the future accepting the invitations
to tournaments that don't write a check or is that
gonna just how do you think those are gonna have?

Speaker 4 (01:14:23):
Yeah, I don't think I think that's where it's going.

Speaker 19 (01:14:29):
I think, uh, you know, I think your basic tournaments
where you go and play two or three.

Speaker 4 (01:14:34):
Games and and.

Speaker 19 (01:14:37):
Hang out for a few days, those are gonna get
fewer and farther between. I think if people are gonna
want to get good teams to come play, they're gonna
have to have an nil component and lots of uh,
there are lots of events.

Speaker 4 (01:14:54):
Now happening that way.

Speaker 19 (01:14:56):
My dilemma is, you know, I've got a fan base
now that we've kind of created that wants to see
us here at home as much as we can be
and so, and they also want me to schedule a
non conference team or two that's really good for the

(01:15:17):
non conference portion. They know we're going to have good
people in here during the conference play. But you know,
it becomes problematic in that I need to you know,
cater to my fan base and my season ticket holders
and play some good folks here. And yet it's hard
for me to turn down significant opportunities for our kids

(01:15:39):
within al And you know, we're locked into that new
era event for the next three years. And they're talking
about going to six teams next year the season after
this season. So and back to three games. We were
originally supposed to play three games this year. We're only
playing two this year, but when they add the fifth
and sixteen, we'll be back to three three games.

Speaker 4 (01:16:01):
So y'all think about that.

Speaker 19 (01:16:03):
I think if we were playing Duke Ucla and South
Carolina boom boom boom.

Speaker 4 (01:16:08):
Back to back to back, like that's a lot.

Speaker 19 (01:16:12):
And but again early in the season place like Vegas,
you know, there's a lot of excitement with that, and.

Speaker 4 (01:16:22):
So we're we're always going to be looking for opportunities
like that.

Speaker 14 (01:16:26):
So do you have to talk to them if they're
adding a third game to pull it forward so you're
back in time for the football game.

Speaker 4 (01:16:31):
With an M. Yeah, so they knew going in that
was really important for us.

Speaker 6 (01:16:38):
It was.

Speaker 4 (01:16:38):
It was one of the drawing cards. It wasn't the
end all.

Speaker 19 (01:16:41):
But this year we're going to play on Wednesday Thursday,
and of course the game's Friday night, and and so
you know, our plans are to be back in time
for that game. I want our kids to experience that
and be a part of it. And so in the future,
playing three games, I'm not sure what that will look like.

(01:17:03):
If the game stays on Friday. I wish they would
have called me out of keep it on Saturday, but
they didn't. But nonetheless, you know, you know, back in
the day, the game is on Thursday, you know, on
Thanksgiving Day, and and so that made it really special
as well.

Speaker 4 (01:17:20):
So but playing three games, I'm sure it'll be. It'll
be it'll be hard for us to get back, but
we'll see.

Speaker 15 (01:17:29):
You often say that you feel kind of the biggest
improvement that any player makes it plain the freshman in
the sophomore years. So what do you expect from your
three Free Jordan and Justice as they kind of transition
into that station.

Speaker 19 (01:17:41):
Well, you know, he asked about this time and what
our team looks like right now compared to maybe years past.
I think all three of those kids look way different,
you know. I think those kids are all confident kids.
Jordan again just wont a gold medal with the unineteen
team and was a starter on that team, played big

(01:18:02):
minutes for him. I know those coaches loved having her
and what she brought to the table.

Speaker 4 (01:18:08):
But I think for me.

Speaker 19 (01:18:10):
You know, probably the one that sticks out the most
is Justice. She's again it's way early, but I'm really
encouraged by her. She's she's really different, looks like the
kid that we were trying to recruit, you know, her
junior year before she got hurt in the summer, and
so she looks really good, has a great attitude. She's

(01:18:36):
just been different, you know, such a really good way.
So I'm excited about about her. And then I heard
Breede up here talking and and you know, she's obviously
her body's changed a little bit and she's put on
some good weight and uh, and yet her explosiveness and
quickness hasn't been affected at all. And and so you know,

(01:18:56):
I think between all three of them, you know, especially
with Jordan and Bury their experience playing last year. Justice
had some experience, but not as much as those others
two did. I think both those all three of those
kids have really improved to this point. Now they got
to go do it next season, but to this point

(01:19:19):
compared to this point in time last year, I think
they're all way different, way different, and so certainly encouraged
by them. And again, those are three great kids, and
they're just they're really good kids, so excited for them
and excited about their opportunities this season.

Speaker 1 (01:19:37):
Yeah, he's got a growing team, a young team that's
getting better. And of course he still has the returning
All Americans. You know, we still has Madison Booker and
Marie Harmon is coming.

Speaker 4 (01:19:47):
Back for one more year. So she got all of
that and well, all right, up next we shift to
college baseball.

Speaker 1 (01:19:54):
We'll talk from college baseball or a good friend in
college baseball analyst Ty Harrington will be with us when
we continue.

Speaker 4 (01:19:58):
I'm thirteen under the zone.

Speaker 1 (01:20:00):
Uh from the greater Waco, USA, and in studio with
us is our own baseball analyst Ty Harrington. What did
we correct to say Woodway or Hewett, which was more
correct about where you actually?

Speaker 4 (01:20:14):
Wood grew up in Woodway?

Speaker 16 (01:20:16):
Yeah, in Woodway, we weren't before Chip and Jojo got
ahold of it way before maybe before Chip and Jojo
were born.

Speaker 20 (01:20:24):
I'm not sure yet, but that's that's debatable. But uh,
yeah it was.

Speaker 16 (01:20:28):
Woodway was a much smaller town then obviously, I think
we were a when we first moved there. My dad
was from Waco, Okay, so he grew up on east
side of Waco on Franklin Washington Street, which is close
to downtown, and.

Speaker 1 (01:20:42):
Of course Woodway is the southwestern that's off the southwestern
edge of Way.

Speaker 20 (01:20:47):
Yeah, and at the time was a little country school.

Speaker 16 (01:20:49):
When we got there, was like a three A school
And by the time I got out of there, we
were four A, which you remember five A was the
biggest YEP at that point in time in the ads.

Speaker 20 (01:20:58):
And uh we were four A school.

Speaker 16 (01:21:00):
And uh obviously now it's a six A school and
just has grown and happens to be the UH state
champion in high school baseball this year. As I was
just texting Eddie corn Bloom, who's the head coach at Midway,
and I've got your.

Speaker 20 (01:21:15):
Uh, people won't I won't be able to describe it right.

Speaker 16 (01:21:18):
Craig Way does such an immaculate job when he keeps
scores of games on the broadcast, well on.

Speaker 20 (01:21:27):
On his If I if one of these stage you
need to put.

Speaker 2 (01:21:30):
You need to we have a camera here.

Speaker 20 (01:21:32):
What it looks like? I mean, it is truly, it
is truly a work of art.

Speaker 16 (01:21:37):
I mean I've worked with a lot of you know,
play by play guys, and it is not this clean
and it is not this graphic, and it is, and
and so everybody knows every game that Craig does has
that type of uh graphics to it, and so that
he can keep scores. The point being Eddie korn Bloom,

(01:21:58):
who's a good friend of mine, the head coach at
Midway High School, that is going to be his souvenir.

Speaker 20 (01:22:05):
Then he's going to put us wall.

Speaker 2 (01:22:07):
Well, I'm honored that he would attack.

Speaker 1 (01:22:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 20 (01:22:09):
No, I mean, look, I just saw him at coaching school.

Speaker 2 (01:22:11):
I was in San Antonio.

Speaker 20 (01:22:11):
You were too.

Speaker 7 (01:22:12):
I was there.

Speaker 16 (01:22:13):
I was there for work for Marsha mcclennan because now
I'm in the public unity space and business insurance. And
went down there to meet with some ads and some
other people and saw Eddie and had a great visit
with him. And so I will go back to Godstown
next week waiting him, and I will go down there
and hand us off to him.

Speaker 20 (01:22:31):
And he is plenty excited about it.

Speaker 4 (01:22:33):
I was saying that my my score book is not
as clean. It's basically what I gathered from that.

Speaker 2 (01:22:37):
That is correct.

Speaker 20 (01:22:39):
Well, hey, got many sugar cuts.

Speaker 1 (01:22:43):
To be fair to both of us, First of all,
to be fair to you, you are in the norm
where people have regular score books.

Speaker 4 (01:22:50):
I have bought his car book. Yeah, a lot of
a lot of broadcasts.

Speaker 2 (01:22:53):
Yeah, so many many have that sort of thing.

Speaker 1 (01:22:57):
Because I, first of all, if Texas played the maximum
amount of games, I think in two thousand and two
they played seventy two games and went fifty seven and fifteen,
And if they played seventy some odd games, even that
is less than half of a minor league season. So

(01:23:21):
I didn't feel like I needed a book. Also because
I missed several games early in the season with basketball conflicts.
So out of let's see in the long Orange finished
thirty above five hundred. Whether the fIF forty three, forty
three and thirteen, I think it was one. I think
they were forty three and thirteen. And last year, yeah,

(01:23:42):
what was the rec forty four and fourteen, forty four
and fourteen? I said forty three thirteen, forty four and fourteen,
all right, so that's fifty eight games.

Speaker 4 (01:23:49):
Out of the fifty eight.

Speaker 1 (01:23:50):
I think I called forty seven of those because we
had early season basketball conflicts, so forty seven, So forty
seven games. I feel like I needed a whole book
for That's what I do. Is my son Andy who
puts together all my football and basketball charts does one
for baseball like that, and I.

Speaker 2 (01:24:09):
Like it because it's pretty vivid.

Speaker 9 (01:24:11):
To me.

Speaker 1 (01:24:11):
It makes for pretty quick recall when I'm calling, say
a fly ball hit to the gap in left center,
and I would see that defensive chart right in front
of me.

Speaker 4 (01:24:18):
Who's trying to.

Speaker 2 (01:24:18):
Get to the ball.

Speaker 4 (01:24:20):
That kind of thing.

Speaker 1 (01:24:20):
So that's the reasoning behind it. It's for ease of broadcasts.
It's just like I tell people other broadcasters when we visit,
when I say things like well, they said, well, can
you take a look at my chart and tell me
I mean, and that's not like I said. Let me
ask you one thing is does this help you in

(01:24:41):
the best way possible describe what you're seeing, what's coming
out of the box.

Speaker 4 (01:24:45):
And they said yes. I said, then you're fine. That's
all you need, you know.

Speaker 1 (01:24:50):
Jeff Hackston does Texas Texas baseball and men's basketball. Years
ago he was doing oral Roberts and Hacks came up
to me during the NCAA Tournament basketball tournament and wanted
to look at my chart, and I showed it to
him and I said, let me see yours.

Speaker 2 (01:25:02):
He says, no, I can't show that, So what are
you talking about?

Speaker 4 (01:25:04):
Let me see.

Speaker 2 (01:25:05):
He goes, it's just a legal pad.

Speaker 1 (01:25:06):
I'm like, so, so he shows me the legal pad
where he's got the stuff down, and I said, does
that help you get it right? So we're people listening
when it's come out of the box.

Speaker 4 (01:25:16):
Sounds right? He said yeah, And this said, then that's
all you need.

Speaker 2 (01:25:19):
It's whatever helps you do the best job.

Speaker 16 (01:25:23):
Let's just say that two things. When Cameron and I
have worked together, I'm not looking over his book to
take two notes. And let's just say when you and
I are working together, you're not exactly looking over your
right shoulder at my book either. And you have and
what people don't know too, is you have a computer

(01:25:47):
in front of you when you're doing the Texas games.

Speaker 20 (01:25:49):
Absolutely that has information on it.

Speaker 2 (01:25:51):
Staff monitors for both of us. We have those, that's correct.

Speaker 16 (01:25:54):
And then you historically will have at least one, maybe
two electronic devices of a laptop and an iPad running
at the same time watching other games. And then along
with that, to our left back left is a TV
screen that is the streaming service.

Speaker 20 (01:26:14):
Now what was Longhorn Network that is showing the game live?

Speaker 1 (01:26:18):
That you're that you're calling, you should come into the
football broadcast boost sometimes because what we've got in there
is there's a TV to our above left immediately there's
another one directly below it. Then I've got the laptop,
I've got the iPad, and then Roger has an iPad there.
So we a lot of times we'll have there'll be

(01:26:40):
six games going on, and people said, well, how do
you concert. You're concentrating on the game you want, but
you're keeping track of other things going on.

Speaker 20 (01:26:49):
So if people are wondering where often you're going, well
down in up in.

Speaker 1 (01:26:52):
Waco, I'm watching it, got it, I've got it on
there as well. Ty hearing is we need a break
when we come back. We talked from college baseball, some
off season stuff coming up when we continue on thirteen.

Speaker 4 (01:27:04):
Under the Zone.

Speaker 1 (01:27:05):
They were an outstanding ban of the early eighties in
the early eighties, was Ty Harrington's.

Speaker 4 (01:27:10):
Uh, that was? That was that was your That was
right your wheelhouse in the eighties.

Speaker 20 (01:27:15):
No, I was, But and you know, Got always reminds
me of summertime. I don't know that I really ever
listened in the wintertime.

Speaker 2 (01:27:22):
You listen to it year round.

Speaker 16 (01:27:23):
I know, but for me it kind of resonate summertime
on like that for your Just so you know, I
made my daughter sit down with me, my middle daughters
sit down with me two weeks ago, and I made
her plow through the making of led Zeppelin.

Speaker 20 (01:27:42):
That she did not.

Speaker 4 (01:27:44):
She did not. She did.

Speaker 20 (01:27:47):
It was not like sitting down with your son watching
a baseball game.

Speaker 4 (01:27:50):
It did not. It did not, didn't take as well,
didn't did not land that way, which she liked.

Speaker 1 (01:27:55):
The What just premier last Friday and part two will
be this Friday on HBO Max.

Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
The documentary on Billy Joel What should be.

Speaker 20 (01:28:05):
Better Chance, Better Chancetance.

Speaker 2 (01:28:07):
There's really really good.

Speaker 1 (01:28:08):
I hadn't had a chance, see because they had to
go to San Antonio last Friday at that point. Yeah,
it's HBO maxis suppose he's gonna do it? Okay, let
me uh get your thoughts on a couple of things.
We talked all the way through up to the National
Championship Series, uh, about the teams that were that were
playing in Omaha and the final analysis when the dust
settles and all that. I don't think much of anybody

(01:28:29):
was really surprised. We we saw Lsu early in the
season knew they were really, really good, and they kind
of went through a little bump and then they kind
of pulled it out and got it back together and
then they were a real force. But you had said,
even back in February, keep an eye on Coastal watch
Coastal Carolina. They they're they're a much more complete team
than folks realize. Because teams that are out of whatever

(01:28:51):
G five as they say, football Group of five, football
ALG six uh are they were deeper than most teams
that would come out of that on a mid major range,
and they obviously proved it by going all the way
to the National Championships.

Speaker 7 (01:29:05):
Here.

Speaker 20 (01:29:05):
They were deep on the mound.

Speaker 16 (01:29:07):
Yeah, and that and that was the piece when you
go back and you watch h or you go back
and look at their statistics even until I think, tell
a story of comprehensive story of what they were able
to accomplish on the mound and in the field, what
they were also able to do.

Speaker 20 (01:29:20):
And this is interesting.

Speaker 16 (01:29:21):
Two weeks ago, I went to Auburn, Alabama with a
buddy mind Early Ingram Ingram ready makes and Kwan Cosby
and I went on a really short day and a
half golf trip.

Speaker 20 (01:29:30):
Well, we got to sit.

Speaker 16 (01:29:31):
Down with Halbard, and then we also got to sit
down with but Thompson, the head coach of Auburn, and
had lunch with them and sat down and talked about baseball.
Was you can imagine the conversations were going back and forth.
The reason why I tell you that is because Coastal
had had to go to Auburn to beat Auburn. And
if you go back and you watch those games, the
two games that they won, their pitching in their defense

(01:29:54):
was unreal.

Speaker 20 (01:29:56):
Yeah, that stellar's right, because stellar means that's it. You
don't get any you don't get any better than what
it was.

Speaker 16 (01:30:01):
And they were able to accomplish that on the road
and a hostile playing in an SEC facility and and
get them to the one place everybody wants to go,
and that was Omaha, and they were able to play
their best game at the biggest moments. And that's why
for me going through there and watching them, they were
so clean on the mound. They didn't create innings with

(01:30:24):
their off the mound, and they did not create innings
in their defensive play. And if you can do that,
then you basically got to score for three and a
half four runs a game to try to win it,
you know, try to win a game or a series.

Speaker 1 (01:30:35):
So how cool is it that for the first time ever,
the Texas Long Runs are going to play the Coastal
Carolina sean To Clears there in the event at they
Can Park in Houston next year.

Speaker 16 (01:30:45):
Yeah, I saw that just yesterday. I guess it got
another shots. I saw an email set out. That's exciting.
I thought, I think UTSA was in there, Ole Miss
was in there. Yep, at Ohio, Ohio State, a very
similar teams with the exception of UTSA to who was
in Arlington last year at one point in time that
played in there, Ohio State, Ole Miss and texts that

(01:31:06):
all had played there before. And so yeah, I think
most coaches would tell you, and you've heard Jim talk
coach Slash and then we talk about this before, if
you can get into tournament play early in the year,
not play on somebody else's ballpark, and if you can
get into a facility where it's seventy two and sunny,
even though in Houston sometimes they turn their heat and
it's colder. It's cold in there sometimes as you know,

(01:31:28):
But in Arrington, anytime you can get into indoor facility,
you know you're gonna play, and you know you're not
gonna play on somebody else's field in their crowd, and
then it's a neutral site. So from an RPI perspective
and or competition perspective, it is ideal.

Speaker 2 (01:31:43):
Yeah, and I think it does make good. Now let
me ask you this.

Speaker 14 (01:31:47):
This is.

Speaker 1 (01:31:48):
I thought about this because of something Vick Schaefer said.
The Texas women are playing an event in Las Vegas
in November Thanksgiving, we called the Legends Era and it's
quite a field of four and it's going to expand
the six next year. But UCLA Duke in South Carolina.
The other teams in Texas will play Ucla first, and

(01:32:10):
they'll play They could wind up playing South Carolina in
a non conference game, so to speak. But a big
component of that is there's an nil component that goes
back to players. Can you see college baseball doing similar one?

Speaker 20 (01:32:26):
Why wouldn't you?

Speaker 16 (01:32:27):
I mean, look, I think all three of us sitting
in here today, and you and I being older than
Cameron obviously has seen where college baseball was and where
college baseball is today from a revenue perspective as well
from a TV rights perspective, there's very few games that
you can't watch on TV now, streaming right, all the above, right,

(01:32:48):
and so it's so big Omaha's this year. You know,
the crowds, the number of people there, the number of people,
the viewership and everything that went with it was unreal.
So why wouldn't it be in My question would be
why wouldn't it be an it's you know you're asking
the questions.

Speaker 20 (01:33:01):
Yeah, I think it's it's it's it's going to happen.
I do, truly do.

Speaker 2 (01:33:05):
Let me get your thoughts on the log warns.

Speaker 1 (01:33:07):
First of all, that decision with the three pitchers choosing
to come back, how big is that? I know it
had to be happy about that. But but but to
hear that a Rugario Ohas is coming back, to hear that,
you know, all three of the guys are coming back,
is a big thing.

Speaker 4 (01:33:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 16 (01:33:25):
Anytime you start in the middle part of your field,
you know that on the mound, it's the biggest place.
We just got through talking about Coastal and their success
and it was created off the Mound and has been
for years at the University of Texas and it's a
great place to start. I'm sure, for for for coach
Slash and his staff the day that all three decided
that they were coming back, that's winning a recruiting battle,

(01:33:46):
you know what I mean in all honesty recruiting. It's
Major League Baseball and the value of why you can
and why you should stay and what you're going to benefit.
And today there is a tremendous benefit to stay in
college baseball because I mean, obviously you can finish your
agree if you hadn't already number two, you can reposition
yourself professionally at number three, you can put money in
your pocket, you know, can increase your value one hundred percent,

(01:34:10):
and and you're comfortable going to school pitching and playing
or whatever it might be, and you still get paid
and going to school. All those things that you know,
used to were so far out of the rem you
couldn't even think about that. And now to to keep
those players here goes back to what we just talked about,
just how far along college baseball is and where it's

(01:34:33):
headed that you can hold that type of quality of
player to stay here and go to school and pitch
for it.

Speaker 20 (01:34:40):
It's university again.

Speaker 1 (01:34:41):
Well, it's another option and the reason why I bring
that up is when I was on vacation, Lynn and
I went to a minor league game. Of course we're
going to go to a baseball game and on vacation,
but she likes it as well. So in my hometown
we went to see the Greensborog Grasshoppers play the Winston
Salem Dash. And the reason I bring that up is
the dash you or a White Sox affiliate had. I'm
sitting there and I'm watching Braid Montgomery Yeah play and

(01:35:04):
braidan was Announcedandy college player, but right now he's it's
a business and he's toiling at the high A level
right now going and so there's you have one more
opportunity to earn some money and increase your value while.

Speaker 2 (01:35:16):
Still staying in school. Like several of these long worn
guys are doing well.

Speaker 16 (01:35:19):
You look, there are guys that professional baseball. You and
I've had this conversation professional baseball. I think ten years ago,
six years ago would never publicly say this, but came out.
So we're gonna dead. Some of these college guys developed
these guys. The programs are good, the coaching is good.
You have the nutrition, strength, conditioning, all these different things

(01:35:42):
that can teach a guy to help a god develop.
So if you sign an eighteen nineteen year old kids
a ten million or four million dollar contract and he
flops because he's not completely ready physically or emotionally, well
let's let's let him go to University of Texas. Let's
see what he looks like in three years when he's twenty.

Speaker 4 (01:35:58):
One and hasn't had to do with fifteen hour bus
ride one.

Speaker 16 (01:36:01):
Hundred percent, and then all of a sudden, your investment
becomes a little bit more. It's never a sure thing, right,
but it becomes, in my opinion, professional baseball's investment becomes
a little bit more secure because they're getting Look, I'm
not just because I was a college coach, but if
you look at the how many people are on the
staff now and their roles and each day they can

(01:36:22):
play to develop a young player is unreal.

Speaker 20 (01:36:25):
And the number of practices we get to have now,
I mean, just to me, it is it is mynor League.

Speaker 1 (01:36:31):
Baseball quick word from you on the passing of John Bible,
who many people knew, great great great umpire. Bob Homolko,
who we knew for years, is greatly ill right now
in Kansas City.

Speaker 4 (01:36:43):
But I know John Bible is a guy you knew
very very well.

Speaker 16 (01:36:47):
I knew really well as a player as a coach,
you know. I don't know if most people know. You know,
his real job was he was a professor at Southwest
Texas State and Texas State. And I saw him more
on the baseball field than I ever saw him in
San Marcus or on campus, but certainly from He's in
the Hall of Fame of college umpires in my mind,

(01:37:08):
and he was a hall of fame guy. And look,
John and I had many of heated discussions, which is
just part of the business of being an unparty coach.
But sorry for everybody's loss, including mine, yours, and everybody
that knew me. He was a tremendous person, a tremendous man,
and a tremendous umpire and a part of the University
of Texas baseball history.

Speaker 4 (01:37:27):
No doubt appreciate you coming by today. I always enjoyed it.

Speaker 1 (01:37:30):
I enjoy seeing you and Cameron first time we were
in the studio together in twenty eight days.

Speaker 4 (01:37:35):
How about that.

Speaker 20 (01:37:36):
Let me tell you what you've got. What's the countdown
to when you really get busy?

Speaker 9 (01:37:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:37:44):
Absolutely, thanks Tiving.

Speaker 2 (01:37:46):
That's Tierge we'll be back to wrap it up on
thirteen under the zone
